Summary

Although King Atháren's sister, Jennesara, saved Hálendi from the Gray Mage, the reprieve came at a steep price--the life of their father。 Now Ren rules over a divided kingdom, with some who want him dead, and a Medallion that warns of worse trouble brewing in the south。

As second born, Princess Chiara is the perfect Turian royal--perfectly invisible。 She longs to help restore peace on the Plateau, but with no magic and no fighting skills, she doesn't stand a chance against a mage。 So when a member of the Turian royal family goes missing and Chiara finds a clue about the rumored resting place of the mages' long-lost artifacts, she decides it's time to be seen。

As Ren's and Chiara's paths cross, they find the depth of the mages' hold on the Plateau is more powerful than anyone suspected, and that they must learn to trust themselves, and each other, before the mages retrieve their artifacts and become too powerful to ever defeat。

For fans of Sorcery of Thorns and Furyborn comes the thrilling sequel to Shielded about a world in a deadly magical war and the newly crowned king and feisty princess who must defeat the deadliest of foes before there's nothing left to save。

I am very honestly giving this three stars even though I am tempted to give it 4, but I really want to be honest with it。 It's good, but not amazing。To people who are wanting to read this book for Jenzo, let me warn you this doesn't have an ounce of them, Jenzo closed the shutter in the last book, for Chiara and Ren in this。 But nope, not the romance between Chiara and Ren, the "chemistry。"But that doesn't mean you should not read this book, it's a sequel and the story will be incomplete, just。。 I am very honestly giving this three stars even though I am tempted to give it 4, but I really want to be honest with it。 It's good, but not amazing。To people who are wanting to read this book for Jenzo, let me warn you this doesn't have an ounce of them, Jenzo closed the shutter in the last book, for Chiara and Ren in this。 But nope, not the romance between Chiara and Ren, the "chemistry。"But that doesn't mean you should not read this book, it's a sequel and the story will be incomplete, just。。。 don't get your hopes up。I really wished the author continued Jenna's pov, I think a lot more people would have liked it better。Also, I do not get why YA authors do this, they make teenagers seem like stubborn babies while eight-year-olds as the smartest kids on the block, PLEASE, get your sense of age maturity right。The first half was tbh really boring, but it sort of picks up pace halfway through but the finale is worth it, so don't be hesitant to read it if you have read Shielded。To sum it up, compared to the first book, this was just okay。 。。。more

Oof。 I liked this book for the first half and then it just。 Kept。 Going。 The characters were so, so slow and just nowhere near as interesting as they’d been in the first book。 I don’t mind Ren and Chiara, but they were both so self-deprecating that it got annoying pretty early on and just never stopped。 The whole villain scenario was somehow both overly complicated and generic feeling at the same time and the end was just… so much。 Too much。 Like, I appreciate characters failing every now and ag Oof。 I liked this book for the first half and then it just。 Kept。 Going。 The characters were so, so slow and just nowhere near as interesting as they’d been in the first book。 I don’t mind Ren and Chiara, but they were both so self-deprecating that it got annoying pretty early on and just never stopped。 The whole villain scenario was somehow both overly complicated and generic feeling at the same time and the end was just… so much。 Too much。 Like, I appreciate characters failing every now and again but when you fail your way to what basically feels like a deus ex machina it just doesn’t work。 Then again I got bored and skimmed the last 100 or so pages of the book so maybe I just missed something good。 。。。more

This sequel is soooo good。 It’s like not better than the first one but it’s not worse ya know? it just sort of has the same excitement and adventure with a sort of whole new story line too so it’s not boring。 i definitely think it could have been better but i still love it 😊

AmazingThis was such a good read! There were so many surprises and so much action that I was always on the edge of my seat。 I am so glad that I got to see the characters and relationships grow! It was such a great story that reflected themes of trust, second chances, and choosing to be who you want to be。 I cried at the end because it was so beautiful。 Ren, Jenna, and the others have the odds against them and face impossible tasks, but they face each task together and overcome the impossible。 I l AmazingThis was such a good read! There were so many surprises and so much action that I was always on the edge of my seat。 I am so glad that I got to see the characters and relationships grow! I love everything about her。 She is constantly the “invisible princess”。 She is the only one who doesn’t have powers, heck even her little sister has some。 She feels useless a lot。 From the moment Ren took her hand to take her to hear the news of her father, I knew he’d be good for her。 Cause unlike others, he saw her。 She was quiet at home, she never was herself, always the prefect princess。 But when she’s on her adventure her true colors show, she’s brave and determined and sassy。 That’s when he falls in love with her, not her mask。I love Ren as well。 In the beginning I was worried about him。 He was so young, he blamed himself for his fathers death, he was trying to rule a kingdom without getting killed, he was lonely, and he didn’t know who to trust。 He constantly misses his sister and father。 He wore the mask of the carefree one, but he was worried, really worried。 But Chiara helps him be himself but also be carefree in a way, she helps him be free and light hearted but not as a mask as it so often is。 After the assignation attempt against him he has post traumatic stress and is constantly on edge。 But he helps save everyone。Erron I was constantly confused about。 I was wondering if he was really on our side or if he was just using them。 In the few chapters in his prospective he seemed nice enough and thought about his little sister a lot, which made him seem better。 But I was still worried。Mari is great! She is brave and every but as head strong as her mom。 I really want a book about her in the future。Just over all a great book。 。。。more

I enjoyed Ren in the first book in this duology and I was hoping he would get his own story! This book is definitely a good one for lovers of adventures and epic quests。 Kaylynn Flanders did a fun job of pulling the pieces together with the mages and the Black Library from the first book。 Ren was definitely a hero that kept me reading and I enjoyed the sweet romance that developed between him and Chiara。 It was a satisfying ending to the series!

I was thrown for a little loop when I started this book, probably my fault for hardly reading the synopsis - but in my defence, I didn't want to spoil anything, but I was surprised when the story we follow is not told from Jennas point of view, like the first book, but her brother Rens。 KayLynn has essentially taken two of the important, albeit undeniably side characters of the first book, and made them the stars here。 I loved the continuation (and conclusion) of the story, and loved the new POV I was thrown for a little loop when I started this book, probably my fault for hardly reading the synopsis - but in my defence, I didn't want to spoil anything, but I was surprised when the story we follow is not told from Jennas point of view, like the first book, but her brother Rens。 KayLynn has essentially taken two of the important, albeit undeniably side characters of the first book, and made them the stars here。 I loved the continuation (and conclusion) of the story, and loved the new POV(s) it was told from。 I would happily dive back into the world without even a second thought。 Such a great series。 。。。more

Untethered was REALLY disappointing。 I struggled to get through it most of the time, and that’s not to say the characters of the book weren’t interesting, but I think the book would’ve benefited from it still being from Jenna’s perspective, and I certainly would’ve enjoyed it more。 I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’m really not a fan of the set of siblings falls in love with another set of siblings trope。 Specifically in this one, Jenna’s brother falls in love with Enzo’s sister, but Jenna and Untethered was REALLY disappointing。 I struggled to get through it most of the time, and that’s not to say the characters of the book weren’t interesting, but I think the book would’ve benefited from it still being from Jenna’s perspective, and I certainly would’ve enjoyed it more。 I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’m really not a fan of the set of siblings falls in love with another set of siblings trope。 Specifically in this one, Jenna’s brother falls in love with Enzo’s sister, but Jenna and Enzo were engaged。 There’s nothing inherently wrong with it, it just always rubs me the wrong way for some reason。 I also didn’t like Chiara that much。 She complained a lot in the book about how people ignored her and she barely got to help with things but then when the time arose, she wasn’t the one to save the day???I just couldn’t get into Untethered like I did Shielded and reading them back to back was a pretty bad idea。 。。。more

While I absolutely adored the first book in this duology, Shielded (in fact, it was one of my favourite books of 2020), its sequel was a bit of a letdown。In Shielded, Jennesara and Enzo truly owned their story and I loved the chemistry between them。 Their story truly fit their characters。In comparison, Chiara and Ren fell utterly flat in Untethered。 They were personality-less and had no chemistry at all。 Plus Chiara was one of those TSTL heroines who makes bad decision after bad decision that on While I absolutely adored the first book in this duology, Shielded (in fact, it was one of my favourite books of 2020), its sequel was a bit of a letdown。In Shielded, Jennesara and Enzo truly owned their story and I loved the chemistry between them。 Their story truly fit their characters。In comparison, Chiara and Ren fell utterly flat in Untethered。 They were personality-less and had no chemistry at all。 Plus Chiara was one of those TSTL heroines who makes bad decision after bad decision that only leads to her putting literally everyone she loves in danger。 It would be like me starting a sword duel。。。I'd be dead before I pulled my sword out of its scabbard。 This is literally what Chiara does for most of the book: tries to duel with no skills。It felt a lot like the author was trying to make the characters fit the story she wanted to tell and it just didn't work here。 We ended up with flat main characters, a messy plot, cliched villains, and info-dumpy and unnatural dialogue。I didn't hate it by any means; I loved the familial relationships and the descriptions of each territory/country, and the author did a great job of establishing the characters' backgrounds to inform the reader of their motivations。 It just wasn't what I expected considering my love for Shielded。 。。。more

Their sexual tensions was (for me) it was like it was hastily inserted into the book just so there's a spark you know? I was waiting for some romance detour to happen for them but nothing (well, there was but I'm not satisfied with it)。 I didn't squealed when they kissed though。 The cloak scene, that I like that and I was hoping that after that cloak scene there'd be more like that, and everytime they're so close to each other I'D SCREAMED 'JUST KISS ALREADY' but they didn't。 So, I'm frustrated with the two of them, really。 Overall。 I STILL LOVE THE UNTETHERED。 I felt a connection to Ren's feelings than that of Chiara's, and her feelings are valid but I felt more drawn to Ren's。 Like I understand what it's like to be the used-to-be-someone's-shoulder-to-cry-on and the hollow feeling that no one cared and loved you anymore。 I just want to have more Jenna's and Ren's moments together as siblings because it warms me, overwhelms me。 Again, overall, Untethered was a roller coaster ride with emotions hanging at the edge, teetering dangerously。 I've said it before and I'll say it again, the actions, adventures, and fights scenes? *Chef's kiss*。 I may have my disappointments in check with this book, the love and care I had for these characters and the story tampered it down。 。。。more

im so sad i didnt enjoy this as much as the first book and i kept trying to figure out why that was。 this sequel also delivers royal teens aiming to save the day, dangerous adventure, and magical enemies。 so whats not to love about that? i think the thing is this just feels very generic when it comes to the common YA fantasy tropes, plot, and writing。 which is fine if you dont mind a ‘what you see is what you get’ kind of story。 but this just feels too basic, too simple for me。 the first book ha im so sad i didnt enjoy this as much as the first book and i kept trying to figure out why that was。 this sequel also delivers royal teens aiming to save the day, dangerous adventure, and magical enemies。 so whats not to love about that? i think the thing is this just feels very generic when it comes to the common YA fantasy tropes, plot, and writing。 which is fine if you dont mind a ‘what you see is what you get’ kind of story。 but this just feels too basic, too simple for me。 the first book has character depth and plot twists, and this just has characters doing exactly what you expect them to do。 nothing more, nothing less。 its very predictable。 i think this would be a decent read for someone who is looking for a reliable YA fantasy, as it checks all the boxes。 but for me, even though it does technically check the boxes, it doesnt expand upon them。 it feels like the bare minimum and that let me down。 :/↠ 3 stars 。。。more
