Summary

Speak enters the world of Gossip Girl in this modern immigrant story from New York Times bestselling author Kelly Yang about two girls navigating wealth, power, friendship, and trauma。

They’re called parachutes: teenagers dropped off to live in private homes and study in the United States while their wealthy parents remain in Asia。 Claire Wang never thought she’d be one of them, until her parents pluck her from her privileged life in Shanghai and enroll her at a high school in California。

Suddenly she finds herself living in a stranger’s house, with no one to tell her what to do for the first time in her life。 She soon embraces her newfound freedom, especially when the hottest and most eligible parachute, Jay, asks her out。

Dani De La Cruz, Claire’s new host sister, couldn’t be less thrilled that her mom rented out a room to Claire。 An academic and debate team star, Dani is determined to earn her way into Yale, even if it means competing with privileged kids who are buying their way to the top。 But Dani’s game plan veers unexpectedly off course when her debate coach starts working with her privately。

As they steer their own distinct paths, Dani and Claire keep crashing into one another, setting a course that will change their lives forever。

ok for future me reference: there are two parts to this book。 The story of TRIGGER WARNING: SA, xenophobia, bullying and racism and the story of dani, claire and their relationships/friendships。 The former is written cleverly, patiently, and well developed。 The latter isn't。 This book is a lot of things and I think that's where its faults lie: it tries to be too much in too few pages。 But I do like how the author writes each experience, reinstating that they aren't mutually exclusive。 I do think ok for future me reference: there are two parts to this book。 The story of TRIGGER WARNING: SA, xenophobia, bullying and racism and the story of dani, claire and their relationships/friendships。 The former is written cleverly, patiently, and well developed。 The latter isn't。 This book is a lot of things and I think that's where its faults lie: it tries to be too much in too few pages。 But I do like how the author writes each experience, reinstating that they aren't mutually exclusive。 I do think the relationship between dani and claire, claire and her friends, (view spoiler)[: claire and zack (hide spoiler)] were rushed。 I didn't feel anything particularly for them。 BUT I did feel for the characters individually。 Assault is real, terrifying and persistent in academia。 It is violating and persistent and in bred into our culture and I stand with Kelly Yang and her experiences。 3。5 。。。more

While the themes are good, and I think this book covers a subject that isn't often talked about, the execution is lacking。 The pacing and transition between chapters are extremely awkward, and while I think both Dani and Claire's individual stories were told with a very clear voice, their relationships to one another and the other characters they are supposed to be close with feel very inauthentic, and sometimes completely neglected。 I would have loved for Zach to be something more than a barrie While the themes are good, and I think this book covers a subject that isn't often talked about, the execution is lacking。 The pacing and transition between chapters are extremely awkward, and while I think both Dani and Claire's individual stories were told with a very clear voice, their relationships to one another and the other characters they are supposed to be close with feel very inauthentic, and sometimes completely neglected。 I would have loved for Zach to be something more than a barrier between Claire and Dani, and for there to be a little more resolution for the familial problems of either party, but since this book was so busy, there were a lot of loose ends。 My other complaint: Going into my fourth year of competitive debate, I 100% agree with the criticisms Yang has for the elitist culture of debate, between how expensive it is to judge bias to how some kids have the advantage of being able to pay for speeches and private coaching。 Which is why I was surprised to find the author's website (kellyyang。edu。hk) is offering rigorous debate courses, starting at over $700 for 1。5 hours of teaching。 At the end of the day, this won't impact my review of the book because it has nothing to do with the book。 I also don't condemn debate classes or camps as a whole。 I've been to one before, so I know that there are camps out there that require rigorous student prep and practice rather than simply handing over resources like what happens in the book。 But it just seems hypocritical to write a truly inspiring work about the internal issues of debate, and then go back to offering a clear advantage to students who can afford expensive classes。 。。。more

At the end of the day, I still tear up a little on the bus。 Lmao, but no book is perfect and since we're all different people with different opinions, there's always things we like and dislike。 That doesn't make this novel any less good!Anyways, quotes I highlighted:“Sexual crimes are not just a hashtag on Twitter。 They are real。 They can happen to anyone, even the strongest, loudest of us,” I say。 “We need to combat it。 We need to make victims feel safe to come forward。 We need to boycott the work of artists who commit sexual crimes, and remove those in positions of power who use their authority to abuse our trust。 So that new, emerging artists have a chance to thrive。”Please, please, if something is happening to you, TALK to someone, expose the crap out of those abusers, do it safely! And remember you're not alone, never。 There are always going to be people supporting you and wanting to see you safe! 。。。more

This is one of the most relatable stories I've read in a long time。 Both of the main characters (Claire and Dani) are flawed in their own way。 Claire is spoiled but kind-hearted, and Dani acts selfish but is helpful。 A lot of Dani's feelings at the beginning towards Claire are reminiscent of how I used to feel about my homestay。 I know that some of the other topics mentioned in this book also spoke to me as an Asian immigrant。 I don't think I was ever ashamed of my Chinese heritage but I was con This is one of the most relatable stories I've read in a long time。 Both of the main characters (Claire and Dani) are flawed in their own way。 Claire is spoiled but kind-hearted, and Dani acts selfish but is helpful。 A lot of Dani's feelings at the beginning towards Claire are reminiscent of how I used to feel about my homestay。 I know that some of the other topics mentioned in this book also spoke to me as an Asian immigrant。 I don't think I was ever ashamed of my Chinese heritage but I was constantly insecure about some of my physical features。I thought that Parachutes also gave me a lot of perspective into the lives of international students in North America。 I did not consider how lonely and dejected they must feel in a foreign country。 It has taught me to be more tactful towards my homestay and other students。 It really hurts to read from Claire's perspective and how she feels like she is perceived as a possession instead of a daughter。 It reminded me a little of how Asian parents wanted everything to be perfect and in the process, sacrifice their children's wellbeing to achieve their objectives。The topic of sexual assault is important to bring up as well。 I personally experienced sexual harassment and yes, even unwanted touching is considered assault。 None of it is an accident and no girl should feel guilty, ever。 Everyone who has been affected should have the courage to speak out and make sure perpetrators are punished for their poor behaviour。 This book provided an excellent message and gave me a feeling of hope and empowerment。 I hope that it can do the same for others who have been through a similar situation。An excellent debut novel。 I can't wait to see more from Kelly Yang! 。。。more

I really liked it, despite my 3/5 stars rating which is mostly form* than it is about the content。 As someone doing work in sexual violence in academic settings, a lot of the things tackled in the book, hit a little too close to home。 I read Parachutes because I've read Kelly Yang's medium piece about her harrowing experience in dealing with institutional betrayal and acts of retaliation from Harvard Law。 There's really a universal quality to survivors--while our experiences and brushes with sex I really liked it, despite my 3/5 stars rating which is mostly form* than it is about the content。 As someone doing work in sexual violence in academic settings, a lot of the things tackled in the book, hit a little too close to home。 I read Parachutes because I've read Kelly Yang's medium piece about her harrowing experience in dealing with institutional betrayal and acts of retaliation from Harvard Law。 There's really a universal quality to survivors--while our experiences and brushes with sexual violence are inherently different and personal, the structures that shape rape culture, misogyny underpin these experiences。 I'm glad YA books now grapple with these themes, I grew up with books with a lot of problematic tropes in relationships and I wished this was something I thought of more earlier。 On form* I think my main issue was the length it took to reach the peak of the story BUT I have to mention that when the bomb dropped I had to put the book down and just go, "I CAN'T BELIEVE SHE DID THAT!!!!" and it was great haha。 It was very satisfying and I love that for the characters, who I came to love and empathize with。 。。。more

TW: sexual assault, rape, racism, classim, cheating, gas-lightingI don’t usually put trigger warnings in reviews because they feel spoilery to me, but I’m in the process of learning and this one book feels like one that totally needs calling out how triggering it can be。Parachutes is the term used for all those really rich kids that are sent to a foreign country to live alone or with a caretaker, something that really intrigued me but it’s actually the perfect formula for disaster。Claire is a co TW: sexual assault, rape, racism, classim, cheating, gas-lightingI don’t usually put trigger warnings in reviews because they feel spoilery to me, but I’m in the process of learning and this one book feels like one that totally needs calling out how triggering it can be。Parachutes is the term used for all those really rich kids that are sent to a foreign country to live alone or with a caretaker, something that really intrigued me but it’s actually the perfect formula for disaster。Claire is a conceited, Chinese girl not doing as perfectly as she should in school。 Her parents decide the best option for her not to ruin her future is to fly her away to California to get an expensive education abroad。 Claire hates the idea of living alone in the USA, but it ends up being her only option to make her own life choices without the close inspection of her entire family。 She seems to quickly lose focus of her studies when she falls in love with an heir to one of the wealthiest families, and just ignoring all the red flags。Dany is a filipino girl living alone with her mom and trying to make ends meet, they end up accepting to be Claire’s hosts。 Dany is constantly working hard to keep her scholarship and eventually get into Yale。 She suddenly starts getting close to one boy from band and her debate tutor is the first to remind her that that’s the type of distractions that she should be avoiding if she wants to keep being his thundergirl。Our protagonists with such different backgrounds but with similar priorities, they both go into the same school。 But even when this book has all the classic teen drama, it is not happy but quite dark and gritty。Every one of our characters are very human and flawed with different sexualities and backgrounds (even the secondary ones) which kept me actually hooked to the story and wanting to know how they and their relationships evolved。The story is a tangle of problematic events and our protagonists’ responses。 They keep growing further apart even when they could be helping each other, all because of prejudice and miscommunication。 The reality is that they do not grow that much。 Most of them are so selfish and even when they are forced into gruesome situations, the climax and resolution felt a little rushed which does not allow us to see their development。 Their reactions are also flawed and frustrating, but do open the door to consideration and discussion about rape, racism, classism, gas-lighting and so much more。 Not liking the character and their reactions about this matters sets off really complex feelings in a reader。The most important topic of all: institutions covering up sexual assault incidents。 The author’s note at the end is heart-breaking and it did cause in me all the empathy that our protagonists sometimes fail to convey。 In summary, it’s a very interesting read that is important be it only for the discussion it can start。 The execution was a little lacking and chaotic, but overall entertaining。 。。。more
