Summary

The hotly anticipated sequel to the instant New York Times bestselling YA fantasy about Tarisai’s quest to change her fate

For the first time, an Empress Redemptor sits on Aritsar's throne。 To appease the sinister spirits of the dead, Tarisai must now anoint a council of her own, coming into her full power as a Raybearer。 She must then descend into the Underworld, a sacrifice to end all future atrocities。

Tarisai is determined to survive。 Or at least, that's what she tells her increasingly distant circle of friends。 Months into her shaky reign as empress, child spirits haunt her, demanding that she pay for past sins of the empire。

With the lives of her loved ones on the line, assassination attempts from unknown quarters, and a handsome new stranger she can't quite trust 。 。 。 Tarisai fears the pressure may consume her。 But in this finale to the Raybearer duology, Tarisai must learn whether to die for justice 。 。 。 or to live for it。

Redemptor is a wonderful and satisfying ending to the Raybearer duology。 I can easily say these two books were two of my favorite reads this year and go-to recommendations。 The world is so unique and special。 I was immediately drawn in by the lore that was used as a baseline for this book and it wasn't confusing at all。 Ifueko is spectacular at creating characters that are real and sympathetic and compelling。 I wasn't able to put down either novel once I started it。 I really hope everyone gets a Redemptor is a wonderful and satisfying ending to the Raybearer duology。 I can easily say these two books were two of my favorite reads this year and go-to recommendations。 The world is so unique and special。 I was immediately drawn in by the lore that was used as a baseline for this book and it wasn't confusing at all。 Ifueko is spectacular at creating characters that are real and sympathetic and compelling。 I wasn't able to put down either novel once I started it。 I really hope everyone gets a chance to read this novel。 。。。more

STUNNING STUNNING STUNNING SEQUEL TO A WONDERFUL BOOK。 Going into this book, I was scared that it would not live up to the love that I have for Raybearer but I did not have to worry at all。 This book is absolutely beautiful in every way, breathtakingly so。 I fell in love all over again with Tarisai, Dayo, Sanjeet, Kirah, Ai Ling and all the other beautifully written characters。 If you like the found family trope, you will love this book。 “You don’t get to choose why people love you。 But what you STUNNING STUNNING STUNNING SEQUEL TO A WONDERFUL BOOK。 Going into this book, I was scared that it would not live up to the love that I have for Raybearer but I did not have to worry at all。 This book is absolutely beautiful in every way, breathtakingly so。 I fell in love all over again with Tarisai, Dayo, Sanjeet, Kirah, Ai Ling and all the other beautifully written characters。 If you like the found family trope, you will love this book。 “You don’t get to choose why people love you。 But what you do with the love you receive 。 。 。 that’s a choice you make every day。” 。。。more

I feel like the audiobook really reduced my overall enjoyment of the story。 I would have preferred having the same narrator as the first book do this one because the pronunciation and accent was soo cringe!! Will revisit later。

Redemptor isn't just a worthy sequel to Raybearer, but a book that carries the same beauty I saw in the first book and brings Tarisai's epic story to an overwhelmingly loving conclusion。 The writing and world building are excellent; they are vivid, and a magical force to be reckoned with, all on their own。 The characters are endearing and vibrant, reaching off the page and warming your heart。 The plot is relentless and the stakes grow to imaginative places only Jordan Ifueko can dream up。 I love Redemptor isn't just a worthy sequel to Raybearer, but a book that carries the same beauty I saw in the first book and brings Tarisai's epic story to an overwhelmingly loving conclusion。 The writing and world building are excellent; they are vivid, and a magical force to be reckoned with, all on their own。 The characters are endearing and vibrant, reaching off the page and warming your heart。 The plot is relentless and the stakes grow to imaginative places only Jordan Ifueko can dream up。 I loved the romance with my whole heart, which doesn't usually happen。。。 like ever。 I was moved and touched by the story in so many ways。 The representation of Tarisai's depression and anxiety was incredibly honest and very meaningful to me。 The themes are incredibly relevant to our lives as justice-demanding-people in the current state of our world: if Raybearer is here to guide us away from ideas meant to sustain systems of oppression while reminding the reader of the power of radical love, Redemptor does the same only instead of focusing on those who abuse power, looking in on those who seek justice, reminding us of our vastness, of our overwhelming capacity for love。 Content Notes: Depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation are all heavily discussed。 Besides that, after reading the first book the content warnings should not come as a surprise。 I did, however, feel that the depiction of disabled people (particularly a girl with a stutter and an amputee artist) felt ableist to me。 The stutter was treated as something that could go away and it was noted as a good thing when it went away, which is a message that is harmful。 I hope someday people with stutters can feel radical love when they get the representation they deserve, until then, do not let that stop you from picking up this book。 The amputee was see as a source of inspiration, which reduces disabled people's humanity by depicting them as valuable to abled people as a source of inspiration, while upholding the very systems that seek to devalue disabled people。 。。。more

5 StarsI preferred the first book just that little bit more, but this was still easily a 5* read! The discussion around justice and sacrifice and getting the balance right between looking after yourself and caring for your society was **chef's kiss**。 5 StarsI preferred the first book just that little bit more, but this was still easily a 5* read! I had the normal problems of sequels to good books with this one, namely being disappointed at first because my expectations were too high and that made every small complaint stand out more, but overall I enjoyed it a lot。 It did a good job putting a lot of material into one satisfying book。

Thank you to Abrams Kids and Netgalley for the ARC of this book。 All opinions are my own! HOLY WOW。 JORDAN HAS DONE IT AGAIN! I hate that I haven't had time to just sit and read this from cover to cover because I absolutely would've。 It was so dang good。 I can't handle it。 I'm not sure how she continues to be able to lure you in from just the first sentence until you finish, but Jordan does it with ease。 She has easily become a must buy author for me。 Redemptor was no exception。 I fell in love w Thank you to Abrams Kids and Netgalley for the ARC of this book。 All opinions are my own! You won't regret it! 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It's impossible to write a sequel to actual PERFECTION (ie: Raybearer #1) but this almost came close。 I knew I probably wouldn't love it with all my heart like I loved the first one and I was right。 However, this world is so rich, so enthralling, I could stay in it for 5 more books。 Two is enough, though - just like Raybearers。I wish we had more Sanjeet moments - I was glued to the pages every time he showed up and I still felt like he was barely there in this book, which makes it impossible for It's impossible to write a sequel to actual PERFECTION (ie: Raybearer #1) but this almost came close。 I knew I probably wouldn't love it with all my heart like I loved the first one and I was right。 However, this world is so rich, so enthralling, I could stay in it for 5 more books。 Two is enough, though - just like Raybearers。I wish we had more Sanjeet moments - I was glued to the pages every time he showed up and I still felt like he was barely there in this book, which makes it impossible for me to give it 5 stars。 It's just how things work, I don't make the rules。I was also disappointed by Tarisai but I get iiiitt, she's flaaaaawed and whatever。 I don't care, sorry, do not DARE TO EVEN GET CLOSE TO ANOTHER GUY THAT'S NOT SANJEET, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU, WOMAN。Anyway, Redemptor lived up to my expectations and that's more than I could ask for。 I might go and re-read Raybearer now so I can have more Sanjeet in my life。 。。。more

As with all sequels that follow my favorite books, I was nervous starting Redemptor。 Could Ifueko maintain the incredible story that she started with Raybearer? Would the world-building hold up? Absolutely not。Many thanks to NetGalley, Abrams Kids, and Amulet Books for providing me with an advance reading copy in exchange for my honest review。 Highly recommend this book to any reader with a love of fantasy, strong "chosen family" stories, and well-written characters and plots。 。。。more

I read Raybearer last year and really enjoyed it。 The YA high fantasy genre isn’t normally in my wheelhouse, but the story and the writing transcended both the intended age group and the genre。 With this in mind I opened to the first page of Redemptor with high expectations。 This never bodes well for me, and this case was no different。 The pacing of this sequel was varied and choppy, moving fast at times and slow at others。 The writing was just as gorgeous as the first, but the story did not kee I read Raybearer last year and really enjoyed it。 The YA high fantasy genre isn’t normally in my wheelhouse, but the story and the writing transcended both the intended age group and the genre。 With this in mind I opened to the first page of Redemptor with high expectations。 This never bodes well for me, and this case was no different。 The pacing of this sequel was varied and choppy, moving fast at times and slow at others。 The writing was just as gorgeous as the first, but the story did not keep me engaged and the new characters were not as interesting as those from Raybearer。 Perhaps I was too attached to the original cast and this was why I was disappointed。 I really hoped to spend more time with a few of the main characters than what was written into this plot line, and the characters were why I came back!I’m still a big fan of the author and her style- I’ll keep looking out for new stuff from her。 。。。more

I can say that I enjoyed this book, just not as much as Raybearer。 I did like how the author didn't do a big recap and picked up immediately where Raybearer left off—saying that, I did expect more action。 If you've read Raybearer, you know that part of the agreement was for Tarisai to build her council members before going into the Underworld。 I feel the majority of the book was spent convincing leaders to join her council, along with her processing feelings about the current state of the Amrits I can say that I enjoyed this book, just not as much as Raybearer。 I did like how the author didn't do a big recap and picked up immediately where Raybearer left off—saying that, I did expect more action。 If you've read Raybearer, you know that part of the agreement was for Tarisai to build her council members before going into the Underworld。 I feel the majority of the book was spent convincing leaders to join her council, along with her processing feelings about the current state of the Amritsar and what she wanted to change。 She doesn't even go into the Underworld until the last 50 pages of the book。 I expected more action。 That being said, this was not a bad read。 I was happy that I got to know some characters more such as Ae Ri (although she was introduced in Raybearer) and Ai Ling, and I also favored one of the new ones, the Crocodile。 I do feel that this book was well written。 As with Raybear, I was drawn into the story。 The descriptions were great, and I was able to get a clear picture of everything in my head。 I didn't find myself getting bored while reading, although I was impatient with the action。 I would have liked it if Tarisai spent more time in the Underworld。 I feel like there was such a build-up of how difficult it would be to make it out and how so many people suffer while there, but it was over so quickly。 。。。more

3。5Tarisai going on a self-destructive spiral through sleep deprivation hit a little close to home。。。Overall, this was a pretty good conclusion, even though I found I couldn't really remember what happened in book 1 (which is entirely my fault)。 The trip to the Underworld was kind of anticlimactic, but still a vital turning point。 This was a very good representation of mental illness and how it affects people, and the ojiji were a good metaphor for that。 This also had a great mix of characters, 3。5Tarisai going on a self-destructive spiral through sleep deprivation hit a little close to home。。。Overall, this was a pretty good conclusion, even though I found I couldn't really remember what happened in book 1 (which is entirely my fault)。 The trip to the Underworld was kind of anticlimactic, but still a vital turning point。 This was a very good representation of mental illness and how it affects people, and the ojiji were a good metaphor for that。 This also had a great mix of characters, and even the ones that didn't appear for long were very well-developed。 I couldn't really connect emotionally, but was still fairly invested and could often relate to some character aspects。And, again: ACE MEN REP!!!!! 。。。more

SO GOOD。 It’s so good。 This was one of my most highly anticipated reads of the year, and it DID NOT disappoint。 I’m just grateful that Ms。 Ifueko blessed us with this book so soon after the first one。 And in a PANGEA。Sequels are difficult, but Redemptor kept all of the grit, the soul, and the emotion that made Raybearer shine。 Tarisai, in the wake of claiming her status as Empress and becoming the last Redemptor, is struggling to live up to these names。 She’s plagued by spirits who echo what she SO GOOD。 It’s so good。 This was one of my most highly anticipated reads of the year, and it DID NOT disappoint。 I’m just grateful that Ms。 Ifueko blessed us with this book so soon after the first one。 And in a PANGEA。Sequels are difficult, but Redemptor kept all of the grit, the soul, and the emotion that made Raybearer shine。 Tarisai, in the wake of claiming her status as Empress and becoming the last Redemptor, is struggling to live up to these names。 She’s plagued by spirits who echo what she believes about herself: that she’s not good enough, that she’s unlovable, that she’s alone。 If you’ve struggled with mental illness, this is an all too haunting depiction。 So we watch Tar grapple with these intrusive thoughts that she feels burdened with and unfortunately, believes she deserves。 Not only is she adjusting to a world that does not (seemingly) want her, but all of the imposter syndrome that usually follows。 Despite being a little over 300 pages, this book feels like it is packed full in a way that some 400+ page books do not。 We’re constantly immersed in action and storytelling, and yet I rarely felt like it was rushed。 Even knowing how much ground there was to cover (after all, the book was meant to cover two years of Tar’s life, including her journey through the Underworld)。 This book also delved further into Dayo’s identity as ace, and showing that he still has many intimate and fulfilling relationships。 I loved seeing that representation further explored。 And speaking of—we also got Min Ja and Da Seo, and what a blessing。 I love them 😍 A powerful and masterfully crafted sequel with beautiful themes about justice and balance and power and a dozen other things—all well-explored。 I’ll probably say more, once I’ve sat with it even longer。 。。。more

This was an interesting return to Arit, and Tarisai, who is now Empress。 She’s got a frightening, no, terrifying task looming over her, as she needs to honour her agreement with the demons: to walk willingly into the underworld in place of the children originally destined to go。 Her fellow council members are terrified for her, particularly Dayo, Sanjeet and Kirah。 At the same time, Tarisai is threatened and harried constantly by the spirits of dead children, who are urging her to work ever hard This was an interesting return to Arit, and Tarisai, who is now Empress。 She’s got a frightening, no, terrifying task looming over her, as she needs to honour her agreement with the demons: to walk willingly into the underworld in place of the children originally destined to go。 Her fellow council members are terrified for her, particularly Dayo, Sanjeet and Kirah。 At the same time, Tarisai is threatened and harried constantly by the spirits of dead children, who are urging her to work ever harder everyday to gain them justice, as well as right several existing injustices in Arit。 To do this, she must also gain not just the support of Arit’s vassals rulers, but she must meld them into her own council。 So, easy peasy, right?I was worried that this book would not be as good as book one。 No worries。 Jordan Ifueko has Tarisai wrestle with a number of things, driving herself incredibly hard, often with her council siblings not grasping why she is so determined to right so many wrongs, especially as they either don’t see the problems in the realm, or feel any urgency about them。Ifueko deals with big issues here, of how -how should one wield power while staying true to oneself and being compassionate to others?-how do you gain equity for those without?-how far do you go and how much do you give of yourself to others when trying to right wrongs? So, Tarisai goes through the wringer multiple times in this book as she keeps trying to do what she feels will gain people around Arit safety, equality and opportunities, while also trying to be kind and balanced in her rulings。 It’s a difficult thing to achieve, and this wonderful young woman refuses to settle for adequate, while also gaining valuable insight when gaining the trust of her vassal rulers。I feel like the book ended on a high, while also leaving me wanting more stories in this world。 Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for this ARC in exchange for a review。 。。。more
