Summary

A beloved and bestselling classic in Japan, this groundbreaking tale of a dead soul who gets a second chance is now available in English for the very first time。

"Congratulations, you've won the lottery!" shouts the angel Prapura to a formless soul。 The soul hasn't been kicked out of the cycle of rebirth just yet—he's been given a second chance。 He must recall the biggest mistake of his past life while on 'homestay' in the body of fourteen-year-old Makoto Kobayashi, who has just committed suicide。 It looks like Makoto doesn't have a single friend, and his family don't seem to care about him at all。 But as the soul begins to live Makoto's life on his own terms, he grows closer to the family and the people around him, and sees their true colors more clearly, shedding light on Makoto's misunderstandings。

Since its initial release over twenty years ago, Colorful has become a part of the literary canon, not only in Japan—where it has sold over a million copies—but around the world, having been translated into several different languages。 Now, Eto Mori's beloved classic is finally available in English。

The afterworld focuses on how the author wanted to reach out to young people who deal with so many stresses and can't see their way through。 I'm no longer young, but the premise of a do-over without it being clear that is what is in play is tantalizing。 Brava Eto Mori, your international kudos are well-deserved。 The afterworld focuses on how the author wanted to reach out to young people who deal with so many stresses and can't see their way through。 I'm no longer young, but the premise of a do-over without it being clear that is what is in play is tantalizing。 Brava Eto Mori, your international kudos are well-deserved。 。。。more

Loved the twist。 This book’s concept drew me in and kept me engaged the whole way through。

There were times that this book was difficult to read, because it dealt so heavily with suicide, but the message overall is hopeful。 It's about second chances, and not just the main character getting a second chance at life, but also him giving a second chance to people who have disappointed him, such as Makoto's father and mother。 We are slowly introduced to various characters and peel back their layers one at a time to see a fuller more "colorful" picture of them。 They are messy, sometimes con There were times that this book was difficult to read, because it dealt so heavily with suicide, but the message overall is hopeful。 It's about second chances, and not just the main character getting a second chance at life, but also him giving a second chance to people who have disappointed him, such as Makoto's father and mother。 We are slowly introduced to various characters and peel back their layers one at a time to see a fuller more "colorful" picture of them。 They are messy, sometimes contradictory, all struggling through their own issues, but that's what made this book so beautiful, so deeply human to me。A standout quote that encompasses a major theme of the book: "Maybe every single person on this earth was just living their life under false impressions, misunderstanding other people and being misunderstood in turn。" 。。。more

The back cover says that author Eto Mori’s Colorful is “a beloved and bestselling classic in Japan,” and the coming-of-age novel lives up to that hype。 A lost soul gets a do-over at life in the body of a 14-year-old boy, who’s just tried to commit suicide: a heavy premise for an otherwise lovely and heartwarming novel。 What keeps Colorful from being too over-the-top life-affirming is the protagonist’s voice—thanks, in large part, to translator Jocelyne Allen’s work。 Mori captures the droll, bore The back cover says that author Eto Mori’s Colorful is “a beloved and bestselling classic in Japan,” and the coming-of-age novel lives up to that hype。 A lost soul gets a do-over at life in the body of a 14-year-old boy, who’s just tried to commit suicide: a heavy premise for an otherwise lovely and heartwarming novel。 What keeps Colorful from being too over-the-top life-affirming is the protagonist’s voice—thanks, in large part, to translator Jocelyne Allen’s work。 Mori captures the droll, bored and, at times, inappropriate mind of a teenage boy, but makes it worthwhile for an adult reader。I included Colorful in my summer preview for Book and Film Globe: https://bookandfilmglobe。com/fiction/。。。Thanks Counterpoint press for the ARC。 。。。more

“Maybe the world was actually filled to the brim with things it was simply too late for, things we couldn’t take back。”“You need to exist in that world。”Beautiful and honest book。 I read this at a time that I needed a reminder to live slowly and simply exist。 This book has been around for a long time but I feel like I’ll learn something new when I read this again in a couple of years or so。

I enjoyed this novel overall。 It was engaging, relatable, and quite deep, A little cheesy, but also leaves you with a positive message?I think the author's idea for this novel is really great and she executed it pretty well while incorporating the topics she wanted to address。 It was a quick read and although the author intended this to be more for children(middle to young adult or even new adults) I think so many people, young and old, may benefit or gain something from reading this。 I'd say ba I enjoyed this novel overall。 It was engaging, relatable, and quite deep, A little cheesy, but also leaves you with a positive message?I think the author's idea for this novel is really great and she executed it pretty well while incorporating the topics she wanted to address。 It was a quick read and although the author intended this to be more for children(middle to young adult or even new adults) I think so many people, young and old, may benefit or gain something from reading this。 I'd say based on her afterwords, that she accomplished what she intended to with this novel。 With this being a translated work, the writing does appear to be a little choppy, some sentences and dialogues felt a little off and somethings (nuances, other stuff that don't cross over language wise) may have been lost in translation。 Howver, i was still able to get the message that the author was trying to convey, and I think many or all readers would too。 However, it may be hard to focus or read if this bothers you。 As far as characters go, we follow the spirit who is living as Makoto Kobayashi。 I honestly still don't know how I feel him or about any of the characters。 I think they were all just very stereotypically basic? They're there to serve their character's purpose more so than anything。 So, I guess its safe to say I don't feel a strong pull towards any one character。 Although this was a good novel overall, it still felt pretty surface level and I would have loved for the author to dive deeper into some of the topics she brought up or addressed as well as do a little bit more showing than telling。 。。。more

I originally caught wind of this story through the anime movie based on the book, but only recently discovered the source material by stumbling upon it through goodreads。 I never watched the 'Colorful' movie but I thought that the concept sounded cool and I've been wanting to delve into more Japanese novels after reading the original 'Battle Royale' novel。 More Japanese literature moaaaarrr, and I could get a double deal out of the story by watching the movie afterwards。 I've had my eye on the r I originally caught wind of this story through the anime movie based on the book, but only recently discovered the source material by stumbling upon it through goodreads。 I never watched the 'Colorful' movie but I thought that the concept sounded cool and I've been wanting to delve into more Japanese novels after reading the original 'Battle Royale' novel。 More Japanese literature moaaaarrr, and I could get a double deal out of the story by watching the movie afterwards。 I've had my eye on the release date for the english translation of 'Colorful' for a while and due to the raving reviews and status the novel seemed to have I was pretty excited。 When I finally got my hands on the book I finished it in a few nights of reading。 My conclusion after reading it was that。。。 it was okay。 Maybe I was just in a sour mood every night when I was reading it but I didn't find the book to be all that compelling。 I spent most of the novel thinking the main character was an somewhat insufferable jerk, which he kind of is (although there is explanation for it down the line), and all the points that were made throughout the book seemed a little contrived。 The book didn't really show the complex natures of all types of people to make a strong point as much as it just kind of had each supporting character have their turn and in the end the novel kind of beats you over the head with the main themes。 I feel like either I missed something the first time reading it or maybe the book just gets an A for concept but C for the execution。 I enjoyed it, but I don't think it's a masterpiece。 I think I'll give it another read over though and maybe update this review if I see the book through a new lens。 。。。more

Omg are you serious? Omg it makes so much sense now。"I was thus close to giving this book 3 stars but then the ending happened and I was stuned。 I was amazed。 Ofc there was this mystery involved as to what the unkown soul did in its past life。 My mind was constantly gravitating towards it。 At one point I was kinda bored of the narration and just wanted to know what happened。 But thank god I read the whole book slowly absorbing each word because at the end it made so much sense。━━━━━━☆ Characterization ☆━━━━━━━━Colorful’s intriguing, exotic, and riveting set of characters are a perfect surreal personification of any commonplace individual in the real world today。 We all have our own vile and appalling secrets that could dismantle our lives as we know it if uncovered, and our protagonists in Colorful are no different。 ━━━━━━☆ Message ☆━━━━━━━━The book also teaches us that in life there are plenty of good things and bad things and it's our choice if we want to look at the bright side of the things or the not so bright side。 It tells us that happiness is a choice and we should value the precious things and people we have right now cuz life is like prize that'll go away just like a home stay, we should value it when we have it and it's such a beautiful message!━━━━━━☆ Overall ☆━━━━━━━━The story has a cleverly mixed assortment of themes that are prevalent throughout the story。 You’ll find just as much optimism as you will pessimism, the outcome of events and development are erratic yet with a serene overtone theme。 "This world of ours is just so colorful that we can never decide on the right one, we never know which colors are real, which colors are our own。” 。。。more

Great read, especially as it gets right into the plot as soon as you start it。 I didn't think too much of the book until halfway, when you're shown how different each family member is from the persona the narrator created based on their own limited perspectives。 Symbolically parallels the narrator's own struggles while living as 'Makoto。' The twist of who the narrator really was wasn't surprising, but I enjoyed the reveal and the way it echoed the overall themes of the book。 Great read, especially as it gets right into the plot as soon as you start it。 I didn't think too much of the book until halfway, when you're shown how different each family member is from the persona the narrator created based on their own limited perspectives。 Symbolically parallels the narrator's own struggles while living as 'Makoto。' The twist of who the narrator really was wasn't surprising, but I enjoyed the reveal and the way it echoed the overall themes of the book。 。。。more
