"This is a story about a bank robbery, an apartment viewing, and a hostage drama。 But even more it’s a story about idiots。。。"Without a doubt one of my favorite books of all time。 This story is so emotionally rich but also perfectly balanced with humor and absurdity。 A quick and easy read, would definitely recommend to any and everyone。 "This is a story about a bank robbery, an apartment viewing, and a hostage drama。 But even more it’s a story about idiots。。。"Without a doubt one of my favorite books of all time。 This story is so emotionally rich but also perfectly balanced with humor and absurdity。 A quick and easy read, would definitely recommend to any and everyone。 。。。more

A lovely book。 Like a mystery without being a thriller and instead being a heartfelt comedy。

This story is about a lot of things, but mostly about idiots。 So it needs saying from the outset that it’s always very easy to declare that other people are idiots, but only if you forget how idiotically difficult being human is。A person, at the end of their rope, decides that the way they are going to move forward is to rob a bank。 But not for a lot of money。 Just a little bit! Just enough to cover rent on an apartment for a month。 They'll pay it back! Just enough to cover rent on an apartment for a month。 They'll pay it back! But things go awry, and instead of walking away with their rent money, they find themselves with an apartment full of hostages and the cops outside the door。 Now what?My only previous experience with Backman was Beartown, so I was really surprised to find that this is written in such a different, light-hearted style。 A different tone could have made this feel like a completely different story。 Never did I feel like any of the hostages were in real danger, though they easily could have been。 In fact, the tension in the book is less about the hostage situation and more about the relationships between the characters and what is happening in their lives。 People are connected in ways you don't expect。 Everyone has their own set of anxieties, their own set of secrets, their own struggles。 Backman does a great job of weaving everything together without giving you the full story until you need it。 You think you know what's going on, and who did what, but you're probably wrong。Is the scenario realistic? No, not really。 But it's not about the hostage situation, it's about this hodge-podge group of people and the way their lives change in a single afternoon。 I'm looking forward to reading more from Backman。 。。。more

4。5 stars would be a more accurate rating。 As someone who works with anxiety and people in general, this was phenomenal。 Everyone is just trying to do their best。

Sammi

I laughed, I cried (really, I did)。 Good characters, poignant thoughts on parenthood, partner-hood, making mistakes, etc

I tried and tried and the storyline was too scattered for me。 Same with the script style of writing just drove me bonkers。 I couldn't finish。 I tried and tried and the storyline was too scattered for me。 Same with the script style of writing just drove me bonkers。 I couldn't finish。 。。。more

What a fantastic read! If you liked A Man Called Ove, this book is for you。 I loved the character development and there were surprises all throughout the story - one of his best!

I'd wondered what Fredrik Backman would do to follow up on "A Man Called Ove"。。。。well, this is it and he's outdone himself。 It is simply a wonderful story。 Weaving together an interesting cast of characters who initially seem to have little to nothing in common but end up, in a certain way, family was done with great grace。 I'd wondered what Fredrik Backman would do to follow up on "A Man Called Ove"。。。。well, this is it and he's outdone himself。 It is simply a wonderful story。 Weaving together an interesting cast of characters who initially seem to have little to nothing in common but end up, in a certain way, family was done with great grace。 。。。more

This book was okay…There were some characters I really didn’t care for。 This book took me a while, I wanted to give up on this book a couple of times but kept reading it for some reason。 The only characters I liked was Zara, Nadia, and Jack tbh…。but yeah 3/5

AUDIOBOOK*BOOK CLUB*I honestly had some mixed feelings about this one at the beginning, but by the end I did enjoy it。 I don't know if it is the audiobook narrator, but the tone of the beginning of the book just rubbed me the wrong way。。。similar to Bear Town/Us Against Them (same author, same audiobook narrator) it was just a darker feel/tone than a lot of Backman's previous books。 But as the story developed and connected, i connected with it more, and did enjoy it in the end。 In Backman style, AUDIOBOOK*BOOK CLUB*I honestly had some mixed feelings about this one at the beginning, but by the end I did enjoy it。 I don't know if it is the audiobook narrator, but the tone of the beginning of the book just rubbed me the wrong way。。。similar to Bear Town/Us Against Them (same author, same audiobook narrator) it was just a darker feel/tone than a lot of Backman's previous books。 But as the story developed and connected, i connected with it more, and did enjoy it in the end。 In Backman style, he does not shy away from hard topics, and sheds light and ideas on many taboo subjects people don't openly talk about。 。。。more

Laughed and cried!!! Loved it!!! Fantastically written!

I’m obsessed with this book。 It is the perfect paradox of believable and absurd。 The characters are incredibly difficult and obnoxious, but through Bachman’s portrayal of them, we can humanize them, if not see ourselves and our own crazy in each of them。 This ingenious and fictitious story addresses the complexities of the human condition: mental illness, love, friendship, loneliness, empathy, and most importantly, redemption。 Read this book。

It's humorous, and compassionate book! Each of the characters carries a lifetime of grievances, hurts, secrets, and passions。 This book tell about anxiety, and the type of it。 I can assure you that。 It's really relatable topic, because who doesn't has anxieties these days? However, it is too complicated story for me。 Every chapter is quite confused me。 Well, might be challenging to be read, tho, I hardly flip the book to see the ending because there are lots of story in 1 book。 😢Further, I love ho It's humorous, and compassionate book! Each of the characters carries a lifetime of grievances, hurts, secrets, and passions。 This book tell about anxiety, and the type of it。 I can assure you that。 It's really relatable topic, because who doesn't has anxieties these days? However, it is too complicated story for me。 Every chapter is quite confused me。 Well, might be challenging to be read, tho, I hardly flip the book to see the ending because there are lots of story in 1 book。 😢Further, I love how the book give me the lesson about the power of friendship and family, forgiveness, and hope during the anxieties journey。 Lastly, don't forget to take a deep breath every time the anxiety attacks and remember there are lots of people and things that worth a gratitude in our life。 。。。more

Quirky, Scandinavian bank robbing caper that is both life affirming and genuinely heart wrenching。 It's subtle and low key, but at the same time sheds some light on the human condition。 The characterisation is beautifully executed and I loved the illustrations inside the cover。 Quirky, Scandinavian bank robbing caper that is both life affirming and genuinely heart wrenching。 It's subtle and low key, but at the same time sheds some light on the human condition。 The characterisation is beautifully executed and I loved the illustrations inside the cover。 。。。more

I loved this book。 Most of it was a very fun read, and the rest made me feel feelings。 I loved getting to know each of the characters as the plot was gradually revealed。 After finishing, I immediately went back to reread a few sections。 I'll be checking out this author's other books for sure。 I loved this book。 Most of it was a very fun read, and the rest made me feel feelings。 I loved getting to know each of the characters as the plot was gradually revealed。 After finishing, I immediately went back to reread a few sections。 I'll be checking out this author's other books for sure。 。。。more

Initially, I was a little annoyed by the structure, but it grew on me。 Then all the characters grew on me and I was rooting for them all。 Very satisfying to close a book with zero loose threads, even if it made the ending drag on a bit。 Some parts were distractingly corny, usually all the wacky narration。 Like referencing how difficult how challenging it is to insert a USB。。。 multiple times。 But ultimately it was very sweet and hopeful and that turned out to be just the thing this week。

I really enjoyed this; there is a little bit of a mystery to figure out as we know a bank robbery and hostabge situation has occured but quickly learn that the bank robber has either escaped or is hiding somewhere。 But truly this is about slowly getting to know all of the hostages/ main characters who are CHARACTERS (all of them made me chuckle)。 I was laughing a lot while reading this and felt it was a good balance of heartwarming and funny but felt like all the connections at the end didn't re I really enjoyed this; there is a little bit of a mystery to figure out as we know a bank robbery and hostabge situation has occured but quickly learn that the bank robber has either escaped or is hiding somewhere。 But truly this is about slowly getting to know all of the hostages/ main characters who are CHARACTERS (all of them made me chuckle)。 I was laughing a lot while reading this and felt it was a good balance of heartwarming and funny but felt like all the connections at the end didn't really come together as neatly (like i definitely still had some questions)? 。。。more

Mark Twain said about War and Peace, "Tolstoy carelessly neglects to include a boat race。" In Anxious People it seems Backman carelessly neglects to include race。 He manages to serve us trite platitudes on mental health, homosexuality, and among other things how banking (really?) is the scourge of the nation, but includes nothing on racism? I'll bet in his first draft he had some pithy comments on race, but felt it may hurt sales, so edited it out。 What Backman has is a sense of what will sell, Mark Twain said about War and Peace, "Tolstoy carelessly neglects to include a boat race。" In Anxious People it seems Backman carelessly neglects to include race。 He manages to serve us trite platitudes on mental health, homosexuality, and among other things how banking (really?) is the scourge of the nation, but includes nothing on racism? I'll bet in his first draft he had some pithy comments on race, but felt it may hurt sales, so edited it out。 What Backman has is a sense of what will sell, and he has that in spades。 His timing is perfect – when the US is obsessed with discussions about mental health and anxiety, when over 40 million people have been on some sort of anti-depressants or anxiety medication over the last year – and his marketing ability is genius。 Write a story where nearly every reader will identify with one of the issues his silly, undeveloped characters portrays, and you have a best-seller。 Never mind that the characters are as thin as the paper in the book, or that he has nothing new or interesting to say about any of the issues he enlightens us on in the book。 The one issue he does stick his neck out on several times is the moral hazard created in the banking industry and how banks prey on the underprivileged (I think that’s what he’s saying, but it’s so misconstrued that I’m not positive。) Maybe banking in Sweden is like PayDay Loans in the US (um, no way), but the moral hazard with banking failures does not screw the borrowers or even the lenders。 When JP Morgan Chase, AIG, Bear Sterns, etc。 failed, lenders and creditors got all their money back。 It was the owners (usually rich stock owners – and definitely not the underprivileged) that were screwed。 The government bailed out the depositors at the expense of the owners。 So, the moral hazard was that the banking industry had no incentive to change because the lenders (bond owners and depositors) didn’t care – they were made whole。 But I digress。 Suffice it to say Backman should stick with writing about how gay people are really just normal people, with issues, like you and me and keep out of economics。 But, back to the review…In a New York Times article Backman calls himself “a storyteller and not an author”。 If nothing else, you can give him credit for self-assessment。 There are no deep thoughts here, no perceptive writing that will make you pause, or sentences you want to reread and enjoy his ability to create poetic paragraphs (although, this could be more of a problem with the translation – but I doubt it)。 Halfway into the book I wondered if this is a case of an author who has so much success early in his career that he truly believes in his greatness and feels that he should enlighten the world on his thoughts about social issues through another wonderful book。 Or, if this is simply a man that knows how to market and strike while the iron is blazing hot。 To Backman’s credit, I’m going with the latter。 He writes “the truth is this is a story about idiots。" I’m afraid he knows the idiots are the people that buy this book and lap up his sloppy writing and contrived story。Finally, why 2 stars and not 1? I liked Ove, and really want to believe I wasn't simply hoodwinked by that book, and Backman has (or did) have some merit as an author。 。。。more

WOW。 Okay I haven’t read a lot of funny but this is the funniest book yet。 I was literally laughing out loud。 But it’s not just funny it’s also very sad。 It’s just so emotional sometimes。 This is a fun and light read but it still marks you in some manner。 When I say I read self-help books because fiction teaches me enough, this is the type of fiction I’m referring to。 It’s so impactful。 Also, there are character-driven books and there are plot-driven books but this is both。 The story had me hook WOW。 Okay I haven’t read a lot of funny but this is the funniest book yet。 I was literally laughing out loud。 But it’s not just funny it’s also very sad。 It’s just so emotional sometimes。 This is a fun and light read but it still marks you in some manner。 When I say I read self-help books because fiction teaches me enough, this is the type of fiction I’m referring to。 It’s so impactful。 Also, there are character-driven books and there are plot-driven books but this is both。 The story had me hooked。 And every character is such an idiot but so interesting。 I’d do anything to meet them T-T <3 。。。more
