Summary

A classic romcom with a Regency-era twist, for fans of Mean Girls and Bridgerton。

Abandoned by her parents in favour of a sea view, middle class Georgiana Ellers has moved to a new town to live with her dreary aunt and uncle。 At a particularly dull dinner party, she meets the enigmatic Frances Campbell, a wealthy socialite and enchanting member of the in-crowd。

Through Frances and her friends, Georgiana is introduced to a new world of wild parties, drunken debauchery, mysterious young men with strangely alluring hands, and the sparkling upper echelons of Regency society。

But high society isn't all it's cracked up to be, and the price of entry might be more than Georgiana is willing to pay 。 。 。

Full of lavish parties, handsome men on horseback and laugh-out-loud humour, this is the summer read everyone's talking about。

I really enjoyed most of this book。 It is not as ridiculous/funny as you might think from the blurb on the back, after about a hundred pages, the more serious topics really come through。 The main characters are well-fleshed out, interesting people, maybe a bit less so the main love interest。 They're not extremely likeable people, but in my opinion a character does not have to be likeable as a person to be a good character。 I thought the story was nice to follow, though the important plot points I really enjoyed most of this book。 It is not as ridiculous/funny as you might think from the blurb on the back, after about a hundred pages, the more serious topics really come through。 The main characters are well-fleshed out, interesting people, maybe a bit less so the main love interest。 They're not extremely likeable people, but in my opinion a character does not have to be likeable as a person to be a good character。 I thought the story was nice to follow, though the important plot points were often quite predictable, I liked the humor and while I'm aware that it is probably not a hundred percent historically accurate book, I like how it still "felt" regency era while discussing topics you wouldn't find mentioned so openly in books from that time, like same sex attraction and consent。Imma talk about triggers here for a second - sexual assault and victim blaming。 (Also spoilers)(view spoiler)[So this book touches on some heavy topics, like very dubious consent, attempted rape and victim blaming and they were not easy for me to read about。 I was really happy that there were people who even while disagreeing with some of Georgiana's actions, did not for one second blame her for the sexual assault she suffered。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Brilliant - way better than I expected from the label of Bridgerton meets Fleabag! If you like either Jane Austen or Mean Girls you will love this!

4。5 stars!! I loved this book。 It is such a skill to write something set in a different time period and still have it be modern and relevant。 This book was hilarious and I absolutely loved it。 Will happily read anything else Lex Croucher ever writes。

Couldn’t put it down! Loved the characters and the witty humour。 A light-hearted, fun, easy read。 Highly recommend!

Neatly playing with classic romance tropes and a strong Jane Austin vibe, it also raises important points about toxic friendship, drinking culture, consent and respect。 A smart, sassy and very funny read about being yourself。

It’s very cute and there is a lot to the characters, especially Georgiana & Frances, Thomas as well。 Frances’ posse is literally that。 A lot of enabling friendships that serve no one, which is all too common in any society where reputation and rank outweighs personal principles and morals。 It’s very Regency 90210 and some rep for queer and black and Indian rep in regency society- not too heavy but 2 main characters r POC。 Hopefully this will encourage more authors to speak more and address the t It’s very cute and there is a lot to the characters, especially Georgiana & Frances, Thomas as well。 Frances’ posse is literally that。 A lot of enabling friendships that serve no one, which is all too common in any society where reputation and rank outweighs personal principles and morals。 It’s very Regency 90210 and some rep for queer and black and Indian rep in regency society- not too heavy but 2 main characters r POC。 Hopefully this will encourage more authors to speak more and address the true multicultural and racist society of regency England。 Reputation means different things to each of the MC’s and it’s interesting to see them influenced by the same thing in a different way。 Must admit, none of the characters are truly likeable except Betty & Thomas but then again not all characters have to be。 Still feel Georgiana could’ve had more of an epiphany that was not triggered by things happening to her; but of her own volition (she is also rather rude but once again characters are not often fully likeable)。 Language is rather modern as if being transported from NYC to regency England but still cute。 Also I def wanna see a deeper dive of black and Indian culture in regency england From more authors Finished 3/4 of it in one sitting ❤️❤️❤️ 。。。more

Ngl I’m a little iffy on this one。。。 but it still sounds like something I might enjoy。 Idk, I’m very particular about the period dramas I read, so we’ll see。 I love the concept, I just hope it’s done in a tasteful fashion 😅

Reputation shows a different side to Regency life。 Instead of polite ladies and quiet drawing rooms, it’s wild parties and debauchery。Georgiana is a well-brought up middle-class lady。 Moving to town ti stay with her aunt and uncle she is hoping for adventure and glamour。 Unfortunately, she has neither the status or budget for her aspirations。Until she meets Frances Campbell。Francess and her friends have staggering wealth and a level of freedom that Georgiana can only dream of。 Every weeks there Reputation shows a different side to Regency life。 Instead of polite ladies and quiet drawing rooms, it’s wild parties and debauchery。Georgiana is a well-brought up middle-class lady。 Moving to town ti stay with her aunt and uncle she is hoping for adventure and glamour。 Unfortunately, she has neither the status or budget for her aspirations。Until she meets Frances Campbell。Francess and her friends have staggering wealth and a level of freedom that Georgiana can only dream of。 Every weeks there are parties, weekends away, drink and drugs。 Protected by their wealth, they have little care for the consequences of their actions and their reputations。Georgiana is drawn into a world that she both criticises and finds alluring。 She is both horrified and shocked by their behaviour and desperate to join in。 Despite her doubts there are times when she puts her better judgement aside and joins in the fun, even if means hurting people cares about。Frances is a character you can live and loathe。 She is charismatic and friendly, generous and charming she can also be selfish and demanding。 She expects loyalty and friendship is on her terms。 Georgiana begins by blindly idolising Frances and her friends but she soon sees the darkness lurking behind the smiles。In contrast to Frances, Georgiana also becomes friends with Betty Walters。 Polite and eager to please, she is a fantastic character。 Georgiana finds her irritating when compared to her sophisticated new friends。 But as the summer advances she starts to see that Betty could actually be a great friend。I really enjoyed this book – it is fun and romantic and witty。 The dialogue is fizzy and there are some very funny scenes。 The book addresses issues if consent that are often missing from traditional Regency romances。Georgiana really develops as a character。 She sees both the good and bad of high society and discovers the qualities she truly admires in people。This is a fun, very modern twist on a historical romance。 A great read。 。。。more

this was the perfect book to pick up the day we went back into lockdown

This wasn’t for me, the first half was slow and dreary and too many of the characters were just unpleasant。

Anna

This was light and far from perfect, but I quite enjoyed it。 A few words out of place, and some genuinely good sentences。 I may also have a soft spot for the author and their sense of humour。 Cheers。

The comparisons to Bridgerton are apt! One day read; I clearly enjoyed it。

Suspense of disbelieve is needed, as well as some patience to get through the first bit, which is a bit slow。 Otherwise a very entertaining and lovely book about growing up and friendship。 Would especially recommend to teenagers, but still fun for those of us in their early twenties!

I loved this book。 I have… very few words, but I listened to the audiobook so I couldn’t race through it the way I desperately wanted to。 I would read like 25 more books in this world。 (I spent 2 weeks I had off over Christmas reading 17 Julia Quinn novels, I am very much That Bitch when it comes to falling into a hole of regency romance novels)。 I’m currently in a weeks long COVID lockdown, and this book was like a soothing balm on my anxious, cabin-fever mind。 I cannot wait to see what Lex doe I loved this book。 I have… very few words, but I listened to the audiobook so I couldn’t race through it the way I desperately wanted to。 I would read like 25 more books in this world。 (I spent 2 weeks I had off over Christmas reading 17 Julia Quinn novels, I am very much That Bitch when it comes to falling into a hole of regency romance novels)。 I’m currently in a weeks long COVID lockdown, and this book was like a soothing balm on my anxious, cabin-fever mind。 I cannot wait to see what Lex does next, because this book was fantastic。 。。。more

A satisfied 3。5 stars。What Bridgerton could have been had it been written by someone with actual talent and sense of humor (and also, incidentally but not unimportantly, by someone who is not an apologist for rape)。Definitely not a fluffy rom-com, but still a solid romance novel。 Nothing sweeps me of my feet lately so I can’t penalize it too much for not pulling me in that much, but the Mean Girls references made me chuckle more than once。

I received this digital copy in exchange for an honest review, thanks Zaffre Books。Trigger Warnings: drug use, sexual assault, off-page rapeI could picture myself devouring Reputation lying on a sunbed in Greece, but instead I finished this sitting in my usual butt-shaped dent on the sofa。 For me, this book encapsulates the beach read with its fast pace and effortless storyline, it’s mean girls repackaged as a regency drama and I’m not ashamed to say I loved it。Reputation is just plain fun but d I received this digital copy in exchange for an honest review, thanks Zaffre Books。Trigger Warnings: drug use, sexual assault, off-page rapeI could picture myself devouring Reputation lying on a sunbed in Greece, but instead I finished this sitting in my usual butt-shaped dent on the sofa。 For me, this book encapsulates the beach read with its fast pace and effortless storyline, it’s mean girls repackaged as a regency drama and I’m not ashamed to say I loved it。Reputation is just plain fun but definitely doesn’t follow your usual regency era rules, the girls move around unchaperoned and face a surprising lack of consequences for their actions。 The plot also has undeniable similarities to Mean Girls and Bridgeton, (knowing how long it takes to get a book down the publishing pipeline this was likely finished before the TV show emerged), but I’ll admit that these similarities played to my taste。 The plot, rather than revolving around school, follows the social events that Georgiana, Frances, and their friends attend so due to this they do spend most of the book inebriated。 It probably won’t be the soft period romance your expecting to come from writing about this time period, but I have to say I loved the slightly darker twists and the way Croucher dealt with them。Georgiana is just interesting enough as a character to pull the plot along, but the romance pales in comparison to her chemistry with her charismatic new friend Frances。 I honestly found myself pausing at points to try and figure out if they were both going to run away together, but instead our protagonist falls for a man。 Honestly, despite being described as a rom-com it really didn’t feel like it was the focus of the plot, instead we explore Georgiana’s obsessive and rather toxic friendship with Frances and the dynamics within their social circle。 Reputation feels more like a coming of age story about a girl finding her footing in the world, and about how she comes to challenge the world around her to change。My one gripe I suppose, and it is a rather large one, is that none of the other characters get any substantial backstory or development。 Georgiana’s love interest Thomas especially fell victim to this and he ends up feeling rather bland, but if I’m being honest all the characters apart from Georgiana and Frances feel a bit like props。 All of them have a backstory that’s hinted at or some sort of personality trait that’s mentioned but never explored, and it’s shame as the social dynamics between that friendship group could have been more impactful with three-dimensional side characters。 The time period actually suffers from this issue too! Every once in a while the characters will mention the King or they’ll all be piling into a carriage, but you could lift them out of the regency era and pop them into the modern-day and it would be difficult to tell the difference。All in all, this book is a whole lot of fun but if you’re looking for your typical regency romance don’t look here。 It tackles some hard-hitting topics with sensitivity and compassion but really only scratches the surface of its own potential。Recommend: If you’re looking for a fun and easy read, but don’t mind an author playing fast and loose with historical accuracy then this should be perfect。 。。。more
