Summary

(From the publisher's website)

Based on the smash-hit audio serial, Bubble is a hilarious high-energy graphic novel with a satirical take on the “gig economy。”

Built and maintained by corporate benevolence, the city of Fairhaven is a literal bubble of safety and order (and amazing coffee) in the midst of the Brush, a harsh alien wilderness ruled by monstrous Imps and rogue bands of humans。 Humans like Morgan, who’s Brush-born and Bubble-raised and fully capable of fending off an Imp attack during her morning jog。 She’s got a great routine going—she has a chill day job, she recreationally kills the occasional Imp, then she takes that Imp home for her roommate and BFF, Annie, to transform into drugs as a side hustle。 But cracks appear in her tidy life when one of those Imps nearly murders a delivery guy in her apartment, accidentally transforming him into a Brush-powered mutant in the process。 And when Morgan’s company launches Huntr, a gig economy app for Imp extermination, she finds herself press-ganged into kicking her stabby side job up to the next level as she battles a parade of monsters and monstrously Brush-turned citizens, from a living hipster beard to a book club hive mind。

I loved this and I also loved the podcast。 Near-future post apocalyptic world with familiar culture with a twist。 People live in a bubble threatened by monsters。 If you are threatened by one, use an app called Huntr to get a hunter。 So hilarious and fun。

I am definitely not one of those people who would be considered part of the "cult of the new。" In fact, I despise overhyped reviews on Goodreads for books before they come out, only for the disappointment to start settling in。 There's so much good stuff out there I want to read, I can't waste my time with mediocre or crappy books! However, when I heard about Bubble in the spring, I thought, "That one sounds like it might be up my alley。" I had not listened to the podcast, and I didn't go digging I am definitely not one of those people who would be considered part of the "cult of the new。" In fact, I despise overhyped reviews on Goodreads for books before they come out, only for the disappointment to start settling in。 There's so much good stuff out there I want to read, I can't waste my time with mediocre or crappy books! However, when I heard about Bubble in the spring, I thought, "That one sounds like it might be up my alley。" I had not listened to the podcast, and I didn't go digging for plot details。 I just thought, "Remember that cover, remember it comes out this summer, and see if the early reviews confirm your suspicions。"This is the 69th book I've read this year and it might be my favorite。 Definitely in the Top 5 easily。 And I've read a lot of great stuff this year。Do yourself a favor and check this one out。 It's clever, fast-paced, and has something to say about the world we live in。。。well, the non-pandemic part at least。 。。。more

This was such a fun read, I'm really starting to grow fond of graphic novels and this one has so much action, monsters, and the art style is great。 This was such a fun read, I'm really starting to grow fond of graphic novels and this one has so much action, monsters, and the art style is great。 。。。more

You can read a book for many reasons but lately, I have just been needing to read something fun to distract me from the constant state of the world and this graphic novel was SO fun to read。 The art style is bright, the characters are ridiculous in the best ways, and the world is very cool。 While there could have been more explanation on Brush's backstory, I don't feel like that hinder my comprehension。 I had no idea that this was a graphic novel adaptation of a podcast! I can't give this anything less than 5 stars with how many times I laughed out loud while reading。 I haven't heard the podcast (though I'm a big fan of its cousin, The Adventure Zone) but I'll have to check it out now。 It has a quirky, self-aware humor, and manages to be decidedly silly, while very human and heartfelt。 Also, a hilarious scathing indictment of capitalism, and the gig economy in particular, as the protagonists join what is essentially an Uber for monster hunters。I also appreciated I can't give this anything less than 5 stars with how many times I laughed out loud while reading。 I haven't heard the podcast (though I'm a big fan of its cousin, The Adventure Zone) but I'll have to check it out now。 It has a quirky, self-aware humor, and manages to be decidedly silly, while very human and heartfelt。 Also, a hilarious scathing indictment of capitalism, and the gig economy in particular, as the protagonists join what is essentially an Uber for monster hunters。I also appreciated how people born outside the titular bubble(s), or people with the Sting, are not particularly othered by the story。 That is to say, they're certainly different from other people and experience unique challenges and benefits, but the story foregoes the "alienated outsider" or "feared freak with superpowers" tropes common in this genre, and is better for it。 Some might find the amount of direct pop culture references tiresome, and that'd be valid, but I think it worked for this particular story and setting very well, and helped keep the wild sci-fi setting familiar。 The art is lovely, expressive, and has an airy quality, as though the characters were crafted out of clouds, while still conveying weight and shape clearly。 The panel progression and lettering are clear and easy to follow, and color is used occasionally in the lineless word bubbles to maintain clarity。Overall I got a huge kick out of this book and would reccomend it to anyone who enjoys funny, referential sci-fi。 。。。more

BUBBLE imagines an (even more) dystopian world in which humanity has moved into weather-controlled domes to escape the wasteland of the outside world, which is prowling with mutant monsters known as “Imps。” However, there are also scrappy bands of humans living in the wilderness outside the domes—called “the Brush”—but are they as awful as they have been made out to be?If all of that sounds pretty serious, it’s not。 This comic is steeped in modern twentysomething culture and is so filled with of BUBBLE imagines an (even more) dystopian world in which humanity has moved into weather-controlled domes to escape the wasteland of the outside world, which is prowling with mutant monsters known as “Imps。” However, there are also scrappy bands of humans living in the wilderness outside the domes—called “the Brush”—but are they as awful as they have been made out to be?If all of that sounds pretty serious, it’s not。 This comic is steeped in modern twentysomething culture and is so filled with of-the-moment jokes and references that they whiz by with the same speed and ferocity as the Imps。 There’s even a reference to Goodreads! (I really hope that in the distant future, we aren’t still obsessing over the pop culture stuff of the early decades of the 21st century。 I also hope we stop needlessly peppering conversations with the word "like," as these characters do。 No doubt those folks will have their own diversions to amuse themselves if they aren’t too busy melting, drowning, or being ravaged by viruses。) I appreciated most the dark humor that skewered the horror that is today’s job market。 The characters struggle mightily to find work that allows them to scrape by and achieve the holy grail that is being able to afford a doctor visit。 Some of the comic’s sharpest wit comes from this area, such as Huntr (a gig that involves on-call Imp slaying) that offers its users a “health care” bonus if they rate the app 5 stars。 There was one section that brought up an intriguing possibility that I wished had been explored further。 A character flashes back to her childhood with her father in the Brush, when she sees a mother Imp caring for her children and has second thoughts about the Imp-hunting mission they are on。 The father explodes with anger and she runs away, and the issue is dropped。 It made me wonder what the story was with the Imps and if the creatures have more nuance than the rest of the comic lets on。 And maybe this is my misophonia talking, but it is NOT a "bad opinion" that there is too much vocal fry in podcasts。 。。。more

A little bit hokey, a whole lot of funny, and some surprisingly good character arcs! Morris and Co have created a fantastic rendition of their story that will suck you in and hold you hostage as you go a long for the ride。 With great characters, timely humor, and a relentless ribbing of the worst that millennials have to offer you will want to read this comic!

I loved this podcast when it came out and was pumped to see that they were making it a graphic novel。 While I think some of the dialogue suffers as a result of all the amazing voice acting on the podcast, the visual art more than makes up for it。 I’m a big fan of Riess’s artwork and I think in general that the story translates super well to graphic novel。 I think this definitely has potential to be a longer series and am crossing my fingers that sequels come out。

Yesterday I finished reading a book by Ernest Hemingway that I'd been working on for months。 Today I read this all in one go。 Bubble was way better。 I guess that means that Jordan Morris, Sarah Morgan, Tony Cliff, and Natalie Riess are all better at books than Ernest Hemingway。 Maybe I should start a podcast about my hot takes and opinions。。。。 Yesterday I finished reading a book by Ernest Hemingway that I'd been working on for months。 Today I read this all in one go。 Bubble was way better。 I guess that means that Jordan Morris, Sarah Morgan, Tony Cliff, and Natalie Riess are all better at books than Ernest Hemingway。 Maybe I should start a podcast about my hot takes and opinions。。。。 。。。more

I couldn't stand reading this to the end and ended up skimming the second half of the book。 I was intrigued by the headline of being based on a "smash-hit podcast" and what could come out of, but I am thoroughly disappointed。 I had picked this book from the Goodread comics ranking section and let's just say that I'll be more caution about using it in the future。There are sexual jokes scattered continuously throughout of the book by a stereotypically male main character and a pansexual female, wh I couldn't stand reading this to the end and ended up skimming the second half of the book。 I was intrigued by the headline of being based on a "smash-hit podcast" and what could come out of, but I am thoroughly disappointed。 I had picked this book from the Goodread comics ranking section and let's just say that I'll be more caution about using it in the future。There are sexual jokes scattered continuously throughout of the book by a stereotypically male main character and a pansexual female, which isn't really my cup of tea, seems forced, and seems to be the only way these random people are friends with each other (that and the illegal drugs in the first scene)。 I also don't find the motivation for the two main characters or why they paired to hunt together to be very believable。 For example the male lead switches his job from working at Postmates to risking his life battling monsters because he spontaneously found out he had superpowers that he had yet to even begin to control。 And as far as I read, I don't know why he got those superpowers or why were they making drugs from the dead monster。The beginning of the story is slow to setup。 The author also leaves us in the dark about the purpose of the stone for a really long time, and for most of the time it has left me having no idea what was going on and what the motivation of the boss was。 This made it both boring and confusing。 In the end, I didn't quite understand its commentary about social media and the gig economy。 。。。more

This book was absolutely delightful。 Funny, witty, tons of little pop culture digs。 Sort of a Buffy the vampire slayer vibe, but also refreshingly new。

Fun and fast read。 I like the world-building, but the story of "milennials vs giant evil corporation" was predictable。 The characters are compelling, and the dialogue is pretty good。 Fun and fast read。 I like the world-building, but the story of "milennials vs giant evil corporation" was predictable。 The characters are compelling, and the dialogue is pretty good。 。。。more
