Tiffany D。 Jackson did it again! Got me GOOD again!! I just did not see that comingg wtf。 “Like all the other girls, I was scared。 And it’s not like you instantly believe us。 When we say, ‘Hey, I was raped,’ you say, ‘Are you sure?’ Way to make us feel safe, Mr。 Officer。”“It’s just interesting how you assume a girl is crazy rather than believing her the first time she tells you something。”I’m just sad and am crying over the fact that this is too real :(

This book hits hard and does what it sets out to do, highlighting a place where our society falls short。 I will have to agree with some of the other reviews on here, the ending kind of took a turn and felt a little rushed, and the Gabby part was not my favourite。 It felt weird to me that suddenly her and her grandma’s mental health was brought up to such a degree by the other characters (the officers I understood, but her sister and parents and friends?)Other than that though, it was hard to rea This book hits hard and does what it sets out to do, highlighting a place where our society falls short。 I will have to agree with some of the other reviews on here, the ending kind of took a turn and felt a little rushed, and the Gabby part was not my favourite。 It felt weird to me that suddenly her and her grandma’s mental health was brought up to such a degree by the other characters (the officers I understood, but her sister and parents and friends?)Other than that though, it was hard to read because of how raw it is, how real it feels because I know that all of those things Korey did are things that happen daily in abusive relationships, wether they’re with celebrities or not。 。。。more

。。。more

This was my first Tiffany D。 Jackson book and I doubt it will be my last。 Really loved the use of trigger warnings at the start of it which should be read before you dive in。

this was hard to read and there are a lot of triggers in this book which I was shocked about because this is supposed to be YA。 This book was really good and I did like the twist at the end。 I did think some of the dialogue was cheesy/very surface level though so 4/5

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Can't fault this book; what an interesting, heart-wrenching page turner that kept me on the edge of my seat! I immediately bought a copy for my students, because this is an absolute must read for any teenager。 With R。 Kelly's trial having finally just started when I read this book (August 2021), Grown seems extra relevant if I may phrase it that way, not just as a cautionary tale but also as an insight into how the abuse of power by the rich, famous and powerful deeply affects their victims, and Can't fault this book; what an interesting, heart-wrenching page turner that kept me on the edge of my seat! I immediately bought a copy for my students, because this is an absolute must read for any teenager。 With R。 Kelly's trial having finally just started when I read this book (August 2021), Grown seems extra relevant if I may phrase it that way, not just as a cautionary tale but also as an insight into how the abuse of power by the rich, famous and powerful deeply affects their victims, and black young women in particular。 Jackson paints a painfully real picture of how people often blame victims and just assume things without knowing what really happened。 Enchanted, the main character, is likeable, relatable but just happened to have fallen into the hands of a mighty famous singer, a predator。 What happened to her was in no way her fault even though a lot of people wanted to believe it was, but Enchanted kept on fighting and showed real strength in the end。Grown also positively surprised me along the way, because it took turns I didn't expect。 For example, how thrilling it got towards the end when Enchanted tried to clear her name in a race against the clock, and how I almost started to question whether Enchanted was a reliable narrator when her friend Gab's existence was brought into question。 The book is more than just a reflection on what happens to a starstruck underage girl who has fallen for an adult superstar; it's also a whodunit。 The biggest reason why Grown deserves 5 stars in my opinion is because it offers so many interesting elements, themes and insights without being overwhelming or leaving loose ends。 It takes real skill to write a page turner that's emotional, beautifully musical, creepy, powerful, mysterious, thrilling, and relevant。 The way it's written is quite fast-paced and the story switches seamlessly from past to present, so I'm sure a lot of people can enjoy this book。 I'm excited to read something else by Tiffany D。 Jackson!A final thank you to the author and publishing house to provide trigger warnings at the beginning。 Hope this will become common practice for all publishers in the near future。 。。。more

I think this book lands at a solid 3。5 stars but it's bordering on 4。 I really enjoyed reading it。 I had 2 1/2 hours on the way home from RPI to devote to this book and I got about 80% through。 I thought the first half of this book was incredible。 The short, fast-paced chapters and the intermittent time jumps from "now" to "then" made me unable to put the book down。 I loved Jackson's portrayal of Enchanted's thoughts as her relationship with Korey progresses。 While very unsettling, I thought it I think this book lands at a solid 3。5 stars but it's bordering on 4。 I really enjoyed reading it。 I had 2 1/2 hours on the way home from RPI to devote to this book and I got about 80% through。 I thought the first half of this book was incredible。 The short, fast-paced chapters and the intermittent time jumps from "now" to "then" made me unable to put the book down。 I loved Jackson's portrayal of Enchanted's thoughts as her relationship with Korey progresses。 While very unsettling, I thought it was believable and I could almost understand what drew Enchanted in。 That being said, I thought the last half got pretty messy。 It felt like the plot had no direction, especially after the scene on the plane。 I was confused by the whole mental illness "plot point" and I feel like there were a lot of questions that still went unresolved by the end。 I honestly think this book could have been much better if the murder mystery aspect just wasn't there。 I was really into this book until the end where I was jerked back to reality by how cliche the mystery part was。 Overall it was enjoyable to read but after a few days, I can see more of its flaws that made me lower the rating。 。。。more

This is one of the most difficult books to read。 I don’t know if I have tons of commentary on it other than it is so devastating and yet so vital to read。 I wish I could make every person who ever made a victim blaming comment on Twitter or Facebook read this。The idea of also combining it with a thriller made it really gripping, but it did feel a bit weirdly paced because the actual “mystery” element was only the last third or so of the book。 That doesn’t diminish the necessity of having a book This is one of the most difficult books to read。 I don’t know if I have tons of commentary on it other than it is so devastating and yet so vital to read。 I wish I could make every person who ever made a victim blaming comment on Twitter or Facebook read this。The idea of also combining it with a thriller made it really gripping, but it did feel a bit weirdly paced because the actual “mystery” element was only the last third or so of the book。 That doesn’t diminish the necessity of having a book like this, it just felt like A LOT going on at some points。This book is so pertinent but also so devastating。 I just want to protect Enchanted at all costs。 。。。more

Jackson does a phenomenal job depicting the complexities of Black girlhood in America。 Enchanted's early characterization is handled so tenderly, the layers of her life so beautifully blended to capture a deeply loved girl on the precipice of a life shattering encounter, that--knowing what was to come--my heart broke for her before she ever laid eyes on Korey。 Jackson artfully captures the conversation around the imagined complicity of Black girls in their own victimization and takes a definitiv Jackson does a phenomenal job depicting the complexities of Black girlhood in America。 Enchanted's early characterization is handled so tenderly, the layers of her life so beautifully blended to capture a deeply loved girl on the precipice of a life shattering encounter, that--knowing what was to come--my heart broke for her before she ever laid eyes on Korey。 Jackson artfully captures the conversation around the imagined complicity of Black girls in their own victimization and takes a definitive stance on the matter。 Black girls are children who deserve to be children, who deserve to be protected。 It is never ever the child's fault that she is groomed and taken advantage of。 Although Jackson clarifies that Enchanted's story is not about R。 Kelly and although I know that the issues tackled are much bigger than any one monster in disguise, Korey's background and M。O。 feel like a direct mirroring of stories told in the documentary Surviving R。 Kelly。 So, if that was difficult to stomach, I'd proceed with caution。 。。。more

Wow, I need help processing this。 I devoured this book and every page of it was just as powerful as the last。 If you want a hard hitting teenage story then this is the book for you。 So many YA books try to conquer challenging topics and don’t succeed in the same way that Grown does。 I can’t believe I won’t get to experience this book for the first time again。 I’m giving this a huge 5 stars。

This book was a total masterpiece, I didn’t know what I was reading about when I started。 But the meaning behind this book is such an important topic that should not be ignored。

I will be thinking about this book for a long time。 There were a lot of plot holes, but such an important topic to discuss nonetheless。

2。5 well this reads like the R。 Kelly documentary。 In the authors note she says twice that this is not about him and at the end she writes mute R。 Kelly which is a movement。 So it’s really inspired by all of the allegations and since I watched the doc I can say there’s a ton of similarities。 Towards the end things got confusing for a while but then started to come back together。

So we’re going to act like Gabriel isn’t a victim too??Yes Enchanted’s and Korey was clearly wrong but what about Gab?? He started dating her at 15 and he was 18?? That’s an abuse of power too。 Made her dad out to be the bad guy for being not wanting them dating。 ion like dat。

Grown follows a 17 year old girl named Enchanted who dreams of being a singer。 She is discovered at singing competition by R&B star Korey Fields。 Throughout this book we see, from Enchanted's perspective how this 30 year old man grooms her。 I don't want anyone going into this book not realizing what its about。 This is a clear look at the abuse of young black girls by older men and the industries that allow the abuse because the men make them money。 Now I had no plans to ever read this book becau Grown follows a 17 year old girl named Enchanted who dreams of being a singer。 She is discovered at singing competition by R&B star Korey Fields。 Throughout this book we see, from Enchanted's perspective how this 30 year old man grooms her。 I don't want anyone going into this book not realizing what its about。 This is a clear look at the abuse of young black girls by older men and the industries that allow the abuse because the men make them money。 Now I had no plans to ever read this book because I know that I'm not comfortable with the content。 Then it came in a book box, and I've made it a goal to at least try every book that comes in a book box。 If I were to rate this book based on the writing and its ability to get a message across it would be a 5 star。 If I were to rate this based on my enjoyment it would be a 1 star。 So I gave it a 3。This is an extremely powerful story that I believe would be great for teenage girls who think they're adults and easily fall in love。 This would also be good for their parents of those girls。 And all men, so they can understand a prospective that isn't their own。 。。。more

CW for death, drug abuse, physical, psychological and sexual abuse。 This book is phenomenal! It deals with some very heavy topics, that need to be discussed within our society as a whole。 We need to believe young women who come forward and say that they have been abused or raped。 We need to examine systems of power, that ignore the voices of the victims, and make their lives a living hell, long after the abuse has ended。 Read this book。 It's an important one。 CW for death, drug abuse, physical, psychological and sexual abuse。 This book is phenomenal! A difficult but important book to read。 It’s heartbreaking to think that this story could easily be any woman’s story in the music industry。 This book will have you angry and concerned for Enchanted, the protagonist, at every twist and turn。 Tw: sexual assault, trafficking, gaslighting。
