I have never read any of the other Pendergast books, and now I feel like I should。 I liked the suspense and quirkiness。 I feel like I would be more invested if I had read some of the previous books leading up to this, so I would know the characters a bit more。 Either way it kept me engaged。

Or could it be a creature from the past or future that requires the blood of its victims to stay alive?Without giving away too much of the story, Bloodless was a bit too surreal for me。 The plot flowed nicely like the authors’ other novels, and the characters maintained their quirkiness and eccentricities。 However, the entire premise of the possibility of a parallel universe was a little too bizarre。Bloodless is not Preston and Child’s best novel and unlike their other novels, this one dipped its toes into unknown territory。 Three stars。 Still a positive review in that I liked it, but I wasn’t head over heels with it。I received a digital ARC from Grand Central Publishing through NetGalley。 The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions。 。。。more

Bloodless is an invigorating, fast paced new entry in the Pendergast series and follows on his work with fellow agent Coldmoon and his ward Constance Green in the last book。 Once again, Assistant Director Pickett has delayed each of their returns to their respective destinations to bring them to the scene of a crime deserving specialized attention, a strange killing in Savannah Georgia。 And anyone knows that Pendergast gives the best and most specialized of attention to any case he takes on。 The Bloodless is an invigorating, fast paced new entry in the Pendergast series and follows on his work with fellow agent Coldmoon and his ward Constance Green in the last book。 Once again, Assistant Director Pickett has delayed each of their returns to their respective destinations to bring them to the scene of a crime deserving specialized attention, a strange killing in Savannah Georgia。 And anyone knows that Pendergast gives the best and most specialized of attention to any case he takes on。 There are so many elements of this case to keep it interesting: the manner of death, the presence of a “documentary” film crew trying to make a film about evil specters of Savannah; the election campaign of an obnoxious senator, a somewhat mysterious elderly woman hotel owner, and of course the venerable old city itself。 Putting all of this together, along with a couple of other elements it would be better for the reader to learn through the story, this was one of the most exciting episodes of the series that I’ve read for a while。Highly recommended。 While it’s always better if you have some knowledge of the characters beforehand, I think you could read this book without that history though you might miss some of the inter-character meaning。 Who knows? You might decide to read the series!A copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley in return for an honest review。 。。。more

Bloodless by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child is a very highly recommended investigative thriller and the 20th book in the Pendergast series。Bloodless opens with one of the FBI's most famous unsolved cases occurred on November 24, 1971, when D。 B。 Cooper hijacked Flight 305 from Portland to Seattle。 Cooper, who said he had a bomb, collected a ransom of $200,000, and parachuted off the plane。 He was never found。Fifty years later FBI agents Aloysius X。L。 Pendergast and Armstrong Coldmoon are sent Bloodless by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child is a very highly recommended investigative thriller and the 20th book in the Pendergast series。Bloodless opens with one of the FBI's most famous unsolved cases occurred on November 24, 1971, when D。 B。 Cooper hijacked Flight 305 from Portland to Seattle。 Cooper, who said he had a bomb, collected a ransom of $200,000, and parachuted off the plane。 He was never found。Fifty years later FBI agents Aloysius X。L。 Pendergast and Armstrong Coldmoon are sent to Savannah, Georgia, to investigate two bodies that have been found completely drained of blood。 Accompanying them is Constance Greene。 Behind their case assignment is a U。S。 Senator who wants the case quickly taken care of before the bad press jeopardizes his reelection。 At the same time, a crew arrives in town to film a documentary on haunted Savannah for Netflix and want to tie the bloodless bodies to rumors of the Savannah Vampire。 Pendergast always has a way to find the responsible perpetrator and is always unconventional in how he accomplishes this task。This entertaining installment in the series can be easily read as a stand-alone since it doesn't tie into any previous cases。 And it is a wild weird ride to investigate and solve the case。 The great thing is that you can't guess what the final denouement is going to be as Preston and Child always have a shocking twisty solution in their novels and this time it is even more unpredictable。 Solving the D。B。 Cooper case along side the case of the bloodless bodies is a surprising connection and the ties to the current case is wonderfully unexpected。 When you reach the conclusion it is going to be a breathless, action-packed, shocking surprise。 You'll never anticipate the directions and places this one will go。At this point fans know the characters and won't really need much information beyond that which is provided。 Those new to the series just need to now that Pendergast and Constance are both enigmas as a characters anyway。 Their inscrutability is a constant in most of the novels so any time any unexpected insight is revealed, it is a major development。 Sit back and enjoy the investigation, including Coldmoon's preferred coffee。Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of Grand Central Publishing。http://www。shetreadssoftly。com/2021/0。。。 。。。more

*4-4。5 stars。 A very bizarre plot, reminiscent of the first book in the series, Relic, that I loved。 The story starts out even more strangely with a rehash of D。B。 Cooper's hijacking of a Boeing 727 aircraft in United States airspace between Portland and Seattle on the afternoon of November 24, 1971。 How, you might wonder, does this fit in with a horror story set in Savannah, Georgia in the current day? The answer to that is quite extraordinary。 The plot: Special FBI agents Pendergast and Coldmoon, along with Pendergast's ward, Constance Greene, are supposedly heading home after solving their latest case in Florida when they are unexpectedly rerouted to Savannah where there have been two grisly murders by exsanguination。 The Savannah Vampire at work? Or something even more incredibly evil? The agents and Constance are staying at The Chandler House, an historic hotel on Chatham Square, where the hotel manager was the first victim of the killer。 He and Miss Felicity Winthrop Frost, the elderly and reclusive owner of the hotel who resides on the uppermost floor, had a close relationship but were heard arguing shortly before his demise。 Perhaps Constance can gain the old woman's confidence to learn the reasons why? Also on scene is a team filming a documentary about the haunted places of historic Savannah。 And an author on a mission to debunk all that。 And Satanists dabbling in rites。 And a narcissistic Senator running for reelection, demanding quick answers about the murders as the body count mounts。 The novel is a great addition to this long-running series。 The setting is equally quaint and atmospheric, just dripping with Spanish moss and eerie, foggy mists。 Certain characters are inscrutable, clever and terribly brave; others are amusing and ridiculous。 The ending is quite exciting and movie worthy。 At least one of the last chapters leaves the reader wanting to know more--hopefully answers will be forthcoming in future editions。 Can't wait!I received an arc of this new horror thriller from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 Preston and Child are always entertaining。 。。。more

Pendergast thinks not, but it IS puzzling。 When another similar murder occurs and the timeline is impossible, he and Agent Coldmoon have to start looking elsewhere for answers。The explanation for the first two chapters, which chronicle the hijacking and escape by DB Cooper, back in 1971 soon becomes apparent, and figures into the case。This one goes in so many directions - the Cooper mystery, documentaries about Savannah's hauntings, reclusive old ladies, a feud between two authors - it is sometimes hard to keep up with who is who, but the payoff, as always, is worth it。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 I have to admit, this is not my favorite Pendergast novel and I have read them all。 The scenario of the machine in the basement was just too far fetched for me。 Also, the killing of the innocent animals in their own world was bothersome。 I enjoyed Agent Coldmoon’s reappearance in this book but would really like to see more interaction between Coldmoon and Pendergast。 They are partners but appear to be quite aloof from one another。 Also, why is Constance Green on FBI assignments with t 3。5 stars。 I have to admit, this is not my favorite Pendergast novel and I have read them all。 The scenario of the machine in the basement was just too far fetched for me。 Also, the killing of the innocent animals in their own world was bothersome。 I enjoyed Agent Coldmoon’s reappearance in this book but would really like to see more interaction between Coldmoon and Pendergast。 They are partners but appear to be quite aloof from one another。 Also, why is Constance Green on FBI assignments with them? Good thing she was there when needed for Pendergast in dire circumstances, but Agent Coldmoon could have done the job which would have helped with the bonding between the two partners。 To me, Constance always comes across as cold and snobbish so I am happy with the ending。 Maybe we won’t hear from her for a while! 。。。more

'Bloodless' by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child is the 20th installment in the bestselling series featuring the character of F。B。I。 Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast。 The story starts with a blast from the past, as a man in 1971 is hijacking a plane。 He lets the passengers deplane, gets a ransom payment, then orders the plane to take off with a skeleton crew for freedom, but jumps out of the plane somewhere in the Pacific Northwest。We then fast forward to the present day, as Pendergast, his war 'Bloodless' by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child is the 20th installment in the bestselling series featuring the character of F。B。I。 Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast。 The story starts with a blast from the past, as a man in 1971 is hijacking a plane。 He lets the passengers deplane, gets a ransom payment, then orders the plane to take off with a skeleton crew for freedom, but jumps out of the plane somewhere in the Pacific Northwest。We then fast forward to the present day, as Pendergast, his ward and assistant Constance Green, and his F。B。I。 partner Agent Coldmoon head to Savannah where a strange case has been developing。A man has been found dead, his body drained of all blood。 It's followed by another unrelated body, dead by the same means。With very little clues to go on, the trio immerses themselves in the supernatural legends of Savannah, including the infamous "Savannah Vampire。" Following all the threads will lead Pendergast and crew all over Savannah, as they find the killer may not be of this Earth, and the mystery may also intersect with the legend of D。B。 Cooper。 'Bloodless' progresses along rather slowly, at first, kind of like moving on a hot humid Southern summer day。 There are scenes relevant to the mystery, but a lot of red herrings, and a lot of conversations between Pendergast and Constance that probably make more sense if you've read other books in the series。 I didn't really connect with the story or the characters until later in the book, when the mystery takes an extreme sci-fi turn I definitely didn't see coming。 That part of the story was riveting。 I'm giving 'Bloodless' by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child 3。5 stars out of 5。 Trigger warning for scenes of animal violence and some gruesome kills。 My full review will be on Zengrrl。com on July 23, 2021。 The book is available for pre-order at book retailers, with a release date of August 17, 2021。 。。。more

I've been reading this series from the very beginning, so my opinions are a blend of what I think about this particular book and how I feel it fits into the overall Pendergast world。 I've missed the partnership between Pendergast and D'Agosta, his old friend from New York。 Pendergast needs someone from the "normal" world to play off of and to keep him from going too far off the deep end。 Agent Coldmoon is a good substitute, I think his character adds to the dynamics of the story。 I'm enjoying th I've been reading this series from the very beginning, so my opinions are a blend of what I think about this particular book and how I feel it fits into the overall Pendergast world。 I've missed the partnership between Pendergast and D'Agosta, his old friend from New York。 Pendergast needs someone from the "normal" world to play off of and to keep him from going too far off the deep end。 Agent Coldmoon is a good substitute, I think his character adds to the dynamics of the story。 I'm enjoying the discreet mysteries, there were so many books tied to the arc of Pendergast's past, his wife, that I missed the smaller cases where there was resolution。 That being said, this mystery is a doozy! On Thanksgiving 1971 the infamous DB Cooper hijacking surprised the nation。 On a flight from Portland to Seattle, a man carrying a bomb alerted flight attendants he was hijacking the plane and demanded $200,000。 After collecting his ransom, and instructing the plane the fly to Mexico City, Cooper parachuted from the plane's airlift and has evaded capture ever since。 Half a century later Agents Pendergrast and Coldmoon are called to investigate a string of mysterious murders in the reportedly hau On Thanksgiving 1971 the infamous DB Cooper hijacking surprised the nation。 On a flight from Portland to Seattle, a man carrying a bomb alerted flight attendants he was hijacking the plane and demanded $200,000。 After collecting his ransom, and instructing the plane the fly to Mexico City, Cooper parachuted from the plane's airlift and has evaded capture ever since。 Half a century later Agents Pendergrast and Coldmoon are called to investigate a string of mysterious murders in the reportedly haunted city of Savannah。 Bodies are showing up completely drained of all their blood; rumors are abound that the legendary Savannah Vampire is on the loose and out for blood。 These two cases are intertwined and the final results could be out of this world。 I equally enjoyed and was caught off guard by this book。 This is book 20 in Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child's Pendergast series of novels, but it's the first one I've read。 I was wholly coming into the story believing it was going to be a straight up FBI investigative thriller, and I think the first 2/3s of the book were written that way。 It does have elements of the supernatural with the vampire and ghost hunting aspects, but the last 1/3 of this book is entirely Sci-fi/Fantasy。 I wasn't upset by it, as the story is engaging and kept me invested。 But I will say, I wasn't totally prepared for the sudden switch。 Since this is my first book in the series, I am not sure if that mix of genres is par for the course or just this book alone, but it was a mix that really worked! I also appreciated that this book felt like a stand alone novel。 I didn't feel like I needed to read the previous 19 books in order to understand the backstory or personality of any of the characters。 "Bloodless" is well written and imaginative。 It's plot was engaging, and structurally flowed well。 I enjoyed the characters, and found them all to be distinct and three dimensional。 I wished we could've spent more time with Miss Frost, as I found her delightful, but if that is the only downside of this book then that's pretty good。 I myself am interested in the DB Cooper case, and have done a lot of reading and research about it。 I really enjoyed how Preston and Lincoln put their own spin on explaining the case, and found their reasonings to be plausible。。。well, all but one。I would recommend this book to fans of the Pendergast series and to Preston and Lincoln newbies alike。 Thank you to Grand Central Publishing and NetGalley for giving me an advanced copy。 。。。more

Another wonderful addition to the Pendergast series that starts with an unusual airline hijacking。in 1971。 In present day Pendergast, Constance and Coldmoon, much to his chagrin, are detoured to Savannah after finishing their latest case。 Someone has been killing people by draining all the blood from their bodies, and one of the victims is the manager of an old hotel。 What do these events have in common you might wonder, but all is tied together beautifully, as you’re swept up in yet another qui Another wonderful addition to the Pendergast series that starts with an unusual airline hijacking。in 1971。 In present day Pendergast, Constance and Coldmoon, much to his chagrin, are detoured to Savannah after finishing their latest case。 Someone has been killing people by draining all the blood from their bodies, and one of the victims is the manager of an old hotel。 What do these events have in common you might wonder, but all is tied together beautifully, as you’re swept up in yet another quirky, suspenseful and enjoyable mystery book from Preston and Child。 And from the way it ends I can’t wait to read the next installment。 。。。more

Thank you to Grand Central Publishing and NetGalley for providing this eARC in exchange for an honest review。 This book will release August 17, 2021。“I would think that someone with your appreciation for spirits will find Savannah to be the most shadow-haunted place in all of America。”With this, the twentieth installment in the Pendergast series, Preston & Child have invariably done it again, and better than I recall in recent years。 I won't spend too much time rehashing this (because I don't wa Thank you to Grand Central Publishing and NetGalley for providing this eARC in exchange for an honest review。 This book will release August 17, 2021。“I would think that someone with your appreciation for spirits will find Savannah to be the most shadow-haunted place in all of America。”With this, the twentieth installment in the Pendergast series, Preston & Child have invariably done it again, and better than I recall in recent years。 I won't spend too much time rehashing this (because I don't want to be too negative, and we want to get to the good stuff!), but after the Helen Trilogy, the books just didn't quite strike me like they used to。 And honestly, I think that was bound to happen—they're on BOOK TWENTY, after all, and they've been writing this series since just after I was born—and not everything can be as brilliantly horrifying as the masterpiece that is Still Life With Crows。 However, with their more recent books, this one included, they seem to be sliding back toward their horror-supernatural origins and I couldn't be happier!Bloodless was absolutely packed with elements that I loved。 I was initially struck by the opening scenes because to my recollection, none of the books in the series so far have begun with such a lengthy, fictionalized recreation of a real event: in this case, D。 B。 Cooper's Thanksgiving Eve plane hijacking。 Chalk it up to me being a millennial, but I had never heard of the event。 But as I read on, I was not intrigued so much by that particular mystery, but by how the authors were going to tie it in to murders seemingly perpetrated by a vampire in modern-day Savannah, Georgia—yet tie it in they did, masterfully。 I had several laugh out loud moments, as well as two that caused me to go "Ooooh" out loud, thanks to Pendergast and Constance's assessments of Southern history—that wasn't something I had initially expected to find here, and I kind of appreciated that they were included。 The red herrings even drew me in, especially that one。 Oh, you'll know it when you get there。 While I do miss D'Agosta, I've really grown to like Coldmoon。 He also serves as an excellent foil to Pendergast, and despite his keen desire to get to the Denver field office, I hope he shows up in the next installment。 His attitude is great。 Constance was more fascinating that I recall her being recently, and I found her chapters—especially the ones where she converses with the proprietress of the hotel at which they're staying to be some of the most compelling, which makes sense, as they're truly central to solving the whole mystery。 The reclusive woman herself is also quite a character with an intriguing history, and it could have been neat to see more of that kinship she seemed to have with Constance。 I wasn't quite as interested in the subplots of the documentary crew and the author who had a bone to pick with the director, but they were engaging enough; I just wish they'd had slightly more bearing on the plot than being nuisances and tangentially involved。 This book ends in a spectacular way with a level of strangeness I feel like I haven't seen since Wheel of Darkness。 I have a feeling that the way in which this all ultimately plays out is going to drum up a LOT of conversation among Pendergast fans。 You are truly not going to see the end of this one coming; it may be the wildest thing the authors have ever done。 The fact that I'm not going to be able to chat with fellow fans about it until release is killing me! I can't stop thinking of the implications it holds for future books, and I have two burning questions regarding things I'm not entirely sure about! I may have to reread this again, and soon, just to see if I can give myself satisfactory answers。 But all that aside, I honestly have no idea where the series could possibly go from here。。。 and that's pretty exciting。I'll admit it now: I'll never stop holding out hope that Preston & Child will one day fully return to the creeping-dread-horror and supernatural-science plots that first caused me to fall in love with their books fourteen years ago (FOURTEEN YEARS AGO?!)。 But even without those trappings, they write some damn solid thrillers that I'll never stop reading, either。 。。。more

Thank you to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review。What do D。B。 Cooper, time travel, and haunted house documentaries have in common? Bloodless by Douglas Preston; Lincoln ChildPendergast is at his cryptic finest with a reluctant partner in Coldmoon。 The two FBI agents along with Constance, Pendergast’s ward, are sent to Savanah to solve a murder。 As is normal with Pendergast, there is much more than murder to discover。 This author team always presents the inexplicable in a believable manner。 In this book, they tie in a real unsolved FBI case and solve it, fictionally of course。 The crassness of the politician is sadly accurat Bloodless by Douglas Preston; Lincoln ChildPendergast is at his cryptic finest with a reluctant partner in Coldmoon。 The two FBI agents along with Constance, Pendergast’s ward, are sent to Savanah to solve a murder。 As is normal with Pendergast, there is much more than murder to discover。 This author team always presents the inexplicable in a believable manner。 In this book, they tie in a real unsolved FBI case and solve it, fictionally of course。 The crassness of the politician is sadly accurate in today’s political world。 The plot was intricate and fast moving。 I enjoyed it and recommend it。 。。。more

I always love any book in this series or by these writers and this one did not disappoint。 That said this one is more set in Pendergast's roll as an FBI agent that investigates quirky cases。 Coldmoon, Pendergast and Constance Green are waylaid from their return home to go to Savannah, Georgia to investigate a murder where all the blood has been drained from the victim's body giving rise to an old Savannah Vampire legend。 Upon arrival They encounter not only a bizarre murder scene but also a film I always love any book in this series or by these writers and this one did not disappoint。 That said this one is more set in Pendergast's roll as an FBI agent that investigates quirky cases。 Coldmoon, Pendergast and Constance Green are waylaid from their return home to go to Savannah, Georgia to investigate a murder where all the blood has been drained from the victim's body giving rise to an old Savannah Vampire legend。 Upon arrival They encounter not only a bizarre murder scene but also a film crew doing a documentary on the ghost of Savannah who are thrilled with the idea of a vampire to add to their storyline。 Thing become more and more strange as they research the cause of these murders。 There is an adjacent storyline about the legend of D。B。 Cooper that works into the solution of both cases。 This is a very imaginative storyline that gets a bit fantastic and unbelievable。 It is a fun read and as always I look forward to more from these writers!!!! 。。。more
