Summary

Scandal and tragedy erupt against the backdrop of an exclusive Paris hotel in Danielle Steel’s riveting novel。

Known for its luxurious accommodations and bespoke service, the Hotel Louis XVI has been the most lauded boutique hotel in all of Paris for decades, attracting an international clientele of the rich and famous。 Now, after four years of renovations and the death of its legendary and beloved manager, it is set to reopen its doors at last。 An esteemed group of loyal returning guests is set to descend upon the hotel, joined by a number of new faces who have managed to secure coveted bookings in the wake of last-minute cancellations。

Awaiting them all is the Louis XVI’s new manager, Olivier Bateau, an anxious man whose lack of experience leaves him unprepared。 He and his level-headed assistant manager, Yvonne Philippe, both strive to continue the hotel’s tradition of excellence。 But they quickly realize that anything can happen at any moment, and on one cool September evening, everything does。

A successful art consultant arrives at the hotel for the first time since her brutal divorce, and is surprised to find new love—if she is willing to risk her heart again。 A new guest contemplates ending his life, and saves a life instead。 A couple finds their once-in-a-lifetime trip interrupted by a tragic medical emergency, leaving the idyllic future they’ve long waited for hanging in the balance。 And one of the hotel’s most high-profile guests, a French politician and assumed presidential candidate, holds a mysterious meeting in his suite that will threaten his life and legacy。 Rocked by the events of this one fateful night, guests and staff alike brace themselves for the aftershock, as it quickly becomes apparent that more dramas and misfortunes are still in store。

Danielle Steel tells an unforgettable story about a famed hotel, where a few complications quickly escalate into a matter of life and death, changing the lives of everyone who passes through its doors。

I enjoy Danielle Steel books for what they are—escapism and romance。 Sadly this book is schizophrenic—the story of Allaister and Gabrielle is classic Steel and an enjoyable story with pleasant privileged people。 I’d give it 4 stars。 Sadly, the other storyline of Patrick who is a French politician is overtly homophobic and adds nothing to the book。 Ironically, Steel doesn’t fully commit to this storyline either。 So it’s offensive to no good end。 It feels like someone told her to become more topic I enjoy Danielle Steel books for what they are—escapism and romance。 Sadly this book is schizophrenic—the story of Allaister and Gabrielle is classic Steel and an enjoyable story with pleasant privileged people。 I’d give it 4 stars。 Sadly, the other storyline of Patrick who is a French politician is overtly homophobic and adds nothing to the book。 Ironically, Steel doesn’t fully commit to this storyline either。 So it’s offensive to no good end。 It feels like someone told her to become more topical and then didn’t edit her。 As a long time reader this storyline is even more offensive as i don't think she’s ever had a gay character and her first 2 are deplorable humans。 There is an admirable gay character introduced later but it is too little too late。 Skip this one。 。。。more

I just could not get into this book。 the mystery around the drama of the hotel just didn't grab me。 There were too many plot lines that would just disappear for a third of the book then all of a sudden come back。 I've loved the last 3 books I reviewed for Danielle Steel and I'm sure other people loved this one, but for me I just wanted to get it over, and it wasn't even a long book。 She was going for that "valentines day" "What to expect when you're expecting" type plot lines where all the chara I just could not get into this book。 the mystery around the drama of the hotel just didn't grab me。 There were too many plot lines that would just disappear for a third of the book then all of a sudden come back。 I've loved the last 3 books I reviewed for Danielle Steel and I'm sure other people loved this one, but for me I just wanted to get it over, and it wasn't even a long book。 She was going for that "valentines day" "What to expect when you're expecting" type plot lines where all the characters overlap somehow but each have their own stories, and yes it was successful in that, but I just couldn't get up the effort to care about most of them。 I was here for Gabby and Alistair's plot line and relationship and I think she should have just gone down that road and gotten rid of the other side characters。 I didn't feel like the character of the old Hotel manager or the new hotel manager substantial and the side plot of the Patrick the politician to be so strange。 At first I was interested but then towards the end I was just like WHAT THE FUCK?!That being said Steel, write this luxurious and mysterious air so well, and I felt like I could see Paris and London and New York so well。 It made me want to travel so bad。 I want to live like one of her characters in these crazy rich lives。 \Thanks Netgalley for the ARC in return for the honest review 。。。more

Thank you to #NetGalley for this ARC。 I finished it in a matter of one day which is not unusual for her books for me。 I've always enjoyed her books and though they are simple and typical and mostly love stories, I enjoy them, including this one。Complications is the right title for this book since Gabrielle and Alaistair meet at the Louis XVI hotel during which someone has a heart attack (or so they think) and he's an internist。 She's healing from a broken heart when her ex marries a young girl。 Thank you to #NetGalley for this ARC。 I finished it in a matter of one day which is not unusual for her books for me。 I've always enjoyed her books and though they are simple and typical and mostly love stories, I enjoy them, including this one。Complications is the right title for this book since Gabrielle and Alaistair meet at the Louis XVI hotel during which someone has a heart attack (or so they think) and he's an internist。 She's healing from a broken heart when her ex marries a young girl。 She has a successful art business in NY while he's an internist in London with a secret to be told。It goes back and forth from NY to London to Paris throughout the whole book it seems and as usual health plays a part in this book。 As a side story, there's Patrick Martin, a politician who's running for a big political office and he gets into a mess also which started at the hotel also, and that's featured also but not as much as the love story between Gabrielle and Alastair。It ends the way that I thought it would as most of her books。 。。。more

I read through this book in a day。 As a go to author for me I am not surprised by how good it is yet I was just in love with the many ways the characters felt real and the story line is way more than the book blurb! Definitely a tear jerker so get tissues ready! One of my favorite reads this year and I highly recommend this!

Thank you NetGalley, Danielle Steel and Random House Publishing Group for the ARC of Complications。 This is my personal review。This book is based around people who meet at a hotel in Paris。 They are connected in a variety of ways。For me this book was just an OK read。 It had too much going on with too many people that it was all over the place。 I did not connect with any character。 I am looking forward to the next book Danielle Steel has coming out。 This one felt like she rushed。

Initially, I was going to give this two stars, but in all honesty, it was a total waste of my time。 There was just SO much to not like about this book。 In the beginning, it appears to be about five different lives - Gabrielle, newly divorced。 Alastair, a man with a secret。 Patrick, a French politician, and Judythe and Richard, an American couple。 Their lives intersect (sort of) one evening in a hotel in Paris。 But after that night, it really was just a story about Gabrielle and Alastair, with sm Initially, I was going to give this two stars, but in all honesty, it was a total waste of my time。 There was just SO much to not like about this book。 In the beginning, it appears to be about five different lives - Gabrielle, newly divorced。 Alastair, a man with a secret。 Patrick, a French politician, and Judythe and Richard, an American couple。 Their lives intersect (sort of) one evening in a hotel in Paris。 But after that night, it really was just a story about Gabrielle and Alastair, with smatterings of details about the other three characters thrown in randomly。 I hated the way Gabrielle's past was scattered throughout the book (she's the only character that got any sort of back history explained about her)。 I hated that Patrick, Richard and Judythe (stupid way to spell her name) were largely ignored through most of the book; it was a short book - there was plenty of room to develop these characters further。 I was indifferent to the characters since I knew so little about any of them 。 And I'm being petty at this point, but I hated the way the word "complicated" was used over and over (and OVER) again。 There was SO much potential here, not only with the 5 main characters but with a few of the minor characters as well。 It could have been a decent book with some interesting storylines and characters。 But it really just felt like the author had bits and pieces of the book completed, realized that her deadline had come, and threw it all together haphazardly to create a glaringly incomplete book。 I normally enjoy Danielle Steel's books, so this review is really out of character for me。 If you've never read one of her books before, stay away from this one; it's not a good example of her work。 And if you're a fan of hers, please don't bother! Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
