DEFY THE NIGHT was an exciting and very promising start to an entire new trilogy, characters, and a world that we get to fall in love with thanks to the brilliant mind of Brigid Kemmerer。 A word of warning: This book is not ACSDAL, and readers looking for ACSDAL will not find it here。 That's not a bad thing, nor was it something I was looking for as I read。 DEFY THE NIGHT follows the apothecary Tessa, who finds herself with the attention of the King and the King's Justice, the cruel Prince Corri DEFY THE NIGHT was an exciting and very promising start to an entire new trilogy, characters, and a world that we get to fall in love with thanks to the brilliant mind of Brigid Kemmerer。 A word of warning: This book is not ACSDAL, and readers looking for ACSDAL will not find it here。 That's not a bad thing, nor was it something I was looking for as I read。 DEFY THE NIGHT follows the apothecary Tessa, who finds herself with the attention of the King and the King's Justice, the cruel Prince Corrick。 Secrets come to life that shakes everything Tessa knows to the core, and she soon finds herself embroiled in rebellion and dastardly plots to rob Kandala of the medicine her people need。 I really liked the twist that occured between Corrick and Tessa early on in the novel, and I won't spoil it。 I thought it was a clever plot twist and really provided some good old fashioned conflict and obstacles in her way that worked to deepen the main OTP of the novel。 I really enjoyed all of the political intrigue and the power structures in the kingdom of Kandala。 Once again, Kemmerer writes characters that the reader can't help but adore, with the resourceful and passionate Tessa and the very swoony Corrick and Harriston。 The pacing in this novel strikes a good balance of slower heartfelt moments and breakneck action。 DEFY THE NIGHT is a story about how difficult it can be to do the right thing in a world where everyone views their own courses of action as what is right, and how there are some who will sacrifice what is right for many to do what they think is right for themselves and how people can suffer as a result。 。。。more

How does Brigid Kemmerer keep writing characters that I can't help but fall in love with!? This book is action packed, filled with rebellion and betrayal and a beautifully building romance。 I love Tessa with all my heart - she is so unfalteringly good at heart, only seeking to help people, and that made me fall in love with her。 Then there's the other side - Corrick。 The King's Justice, the swift dealer of punishment to those who wrong the crown。 But really, he's just a man trying to do the best How does Brigid Kemmerer keep writing characters that I can't help but fall in love with!? Enjoyed this one! I didn't really care for A Curse So Dark and Lonely, so I was pleasantly surprised that this proved to be a fast, enjoyable read for me。 I loved the two main characters, and while it did take a while for the story to get going, past a certain point it really picks up。 Loved the romance as well! Kemmerer does a great job at creating a new world and making it not tedious to read while world building。 The book is told through two point of views, Tessa and Prince Corrick, the King's brother。 We get to see the inner workings of the palace through Corrick and we follow Tessa along on her mission in making Moonflower accessible to all。 I don't know how Kemmerer makes courtly discussion so interesting, but she really does! The discord between the court's members was never dull and helped to move the story along。 I didn't realize it until I read the author's acknowledgements that Defy the Night was inspired by the fairy tale of Robin Hood, stealing from the rich to help the poor。 Defy the Night is packed with action, a little romance and a few surprises。 I enjoyed it all and will definitely be recommending this to fellow readers。 。。。more

Right and wrong, outlaw or not should be straightforward determinations but that is not always the case as Tessa learns。 Finding out someone you love is actually also someone you hate is confusing。 Navigating all this during an epidemic and revolution makes it overwhelming。

Kemmerer has written another winning fantasy-like book with characters that are complex and memorable。 Two narrators tell their side of events in this stunning story。 Tessa Cade is a young girl whose parents were murdered for the very thing she continues to do。 Her homeland of Kandala suffers from a mysterious illness that can kill, unless people have access to a particular medicinal plant that is not plentiful。 That means that the poor are doomed to suffer the most from lack of the needed medic Kemmerer has written another winning fantasy-like book with characters that are complex and memorable。 Two narrators tell their side of events in this stunning story。 Tessa Cade is a young girl whose parents were murdered for the very thing she continues to do。 Her homeland of Kandala suffers from a mysterious illness that can kill, unless people have access to a particular medicinal plant that is not plentiful。 That means that the poor are doomed to suffer the most from lack of the needed medicine。 Like the famous hero Robin Hood, Tessa steals the plants from the wealthy to give to the poor。 Her accomplice is Wes, a masked co-conspirator who joins her in her nightly adventures。 She and Wes have developed a close bond over the years that they have worked together。 King Harristan is the ruler of Kandala and he, and his brother Prince Corrick, rule with an iron fist。 Their parents were kind rulers who were murdered and now Harriston and Corrick are determined to survive through a reign of fear。 But will their manner of rule be any safer than the kingdom of their parents? As with most kingdoms, there’s unrest among the gentry as well as the poor。 The question is, can Corrick keep his brother safe from all the threats? Secondly, how great a toll does being the enforcer (of all the harsh rules and laws) exert on the younger brother? He is the second narrator and his tortured soul is on full display。One can’t help but be fascinated by the repartee between Wes and Tessa。 They are adorable, but their actions put both of their lives at risk。 Corrick has a complicated persona and his story will appeal to lovers of Holly Black and Leah Bardugo。 Though there are no fantastical elements, the story reads like a fantasy and readers will be wrapped up in the interplay of the characters and the challenge of ruling fairly and maintaining control。 。。。more

Okay, so Brigid Kemmerer is one of my all time favourite authors so it is completely unsurprising that I loved Defy The Night。 Maybe not as much as I adore The Curse So Dark and Lonely, but that’s a pretty high standard of adoration to live up to and Defy The Night does not disappoint in any way - it’s just extremely stressful。Tessa risks everything every night, sneaking into the Royal Sector to steal Moonflowers to make the only medicine that will keep the deadly illness at bay。 In the Wilds th Okay, so Brigid Kemmerer is one of my all time favourite authors so it is completely unsurprising that I loved Defy The Night。 Maybe not as much as I adore The Curse So Dark and Lonely, but that’s a pretty high standard of adoration to live up to and Defy The Night does not disappoint in any way - it’s just extremely stressful。Tessa risks everything every night, sneaking into the Royal Sector to steal Moonflowers to make the only medicine that will keep the deadly illness at bay。 In the Wilds there is never enough medicine or coins to go around but she and Wes, a fellow outlaw, do what they can。 In the palace, Prince Corrick does what he can to keep his brother, the king, safe and barter for enough moonflowers。 But being the King’s Justice is a bloody and endless job and it seems even his best efforts may not be enough to prevent a rebellion。I do love retellings and Defy the Night draws loosely on Robin Hood。 It’s a Brigid Kemmerer book, so there is no questioning the writing and scintillating romance。 I adore Brigid’s writing。 She is able to so quickly capture my attention and draw me into the story。 Duel perspectives and chapter’s that switch between Corrick and Tessa give the reader insight into the two very different worlds they come from。 Oh Corrick。 Dear, broken hearted, sweet and deadly Corrick。 What a fine and so very flawed character you make。 I think Brigid is setting a bit of a trend with her main characters who we love but who do some very bad things (cough, Rhen, cough cough。)。 So, if you like genuinely nice girls falling for guys who have had to do some terrible things and help them see past that to the nice guys hiding within, then you’ll enjoy Defy The Night。The romance was a surprise and takes an interesting journey。 Hard to say much without spoiling the surprise, but I loved how complicated and conflicted the romance is and how hard it is for Tessa, and yet how strong she is to stand up for both what she knows is right but to also find understanding and compassion。 Some might say she is weak for falling for such a guy, but only see her strength in balancing what needs to be done with kindness。I thought I knew what the twist would be fairly early in and then I talked myself out of it, so I was surprised when the reveal is made。 Can I also say, that I love how soon in the story this twist is revealed, as it makes it more believable and so much more fun knowing the truth。 I think it’s important to mention that Brigid says in her author’s note that this book, about a deadly illness, was conceived before Corona Virus hit the world。 It was edited during lockdowns, so there have been some changes, but I think it comes across as a very relatable experience, without it being too similar。This is the first book in a new series which promises to be just as thrilling and agonising as Kemmerer’s other fantasy series。 Can’t wait for the next book。The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes。 All opinions are my own。Find more reviews, reading age guides, content advisory, and recommendations on my blog Madison's Library 。。。more

I thoroughly enjoyed this read。 It was a little bit slower paced at the beginning but just enough to do some world-building and establish the characters and then it picked right up and didn't slow down。 Tessa was really well-developed and I loved Corrick and his complexity。 He was the most interesting character in this book。 I wish Harristan had a little bit more development because he felt just a bit flat for playing such a big role。 But it does seem like he'll have the opportunity to develop more in book 2。 Overall, this was well-written, exciting, and relatable。 。。。more

A great new world created by Kemmerer。 This is well-written with complex characters and motivations。 A wonderful addition for prior fans。 。。。more
