Summary

A dark subject and a hard read。 This emotional story tells of abuse we rarely hear about but exists - male victims of sexual abuse。 The story cover family and relationships and is extremely well told。

This was really good。 It would have been a 5 star but nothing too wow or crazy happened as I anticipated or would have liked。 Fast paced， short chapters， multiple POVs， two timelines。 I really liked the writing style and the story overall。 No filler nonsense， everything pertained to the main plot and wrapped up nicely。

2。5 rounded to 3I wanted to love it， I really did。 I’m not even entirely sure exactly what made me pause 60% through & not pick it up for 3 weeks。 （Note: This reading rut may have been due in part to my mental state for the past month; I do believe it affects how I feel about a novel， in which case this may just be ‘the wrong book at the wrong time’ situation。） However， because I have never attempted to write a novel， & therefore I am aware that any negative commentary I make about a finished wo 2。5 rounded to 3I wanted to love it， I really did。 I’m not even entirely sure exactly what made me pause 60% through & not pick it up for 3 weeks。 （Note: This reading rut may have been due in part to my mental state for the past month; I do believe it affects how I feel about a novel， in which case this may just be ‘the wrong book at the wrong time’ situation。） However， because I have never attempted to write a novel， & therefore I am aware that any negative commentary I make about a finished work makes me a chump， I must say that I commend the author’s execution on a debut novel。 For a first-time novelist， this truly isn’t terrible: it has an airtight plot， & she was sneaky & methodical about the reveals。 I didn’t have the exact ending predicted until the author wanted me to know。 So， it is quite well done in many ways， but not enough ways that I would call it “compelling” or “thrilling”。 Around 200 pages the actual mystery had finally shown itself。 The last 180 pages were much better paced than the first 200。 I hope this writer continues to work on the craft so that I can continue to be a chump reader who comments on it。 。。。more

I can’t believe this is a debut novel！ This book made me feel so many emotions。 The ending left me angry and I’m still not sure how I felt about it but I loved all the legal/criminal defense talk throughout the book。 Can’t wait to read more from Caitlin in the future

Very good story about a family。 Julia and Tony are married and Tony has a brother Nick。 Also Julia and Tony have 2 kids。 It takes one horrible event to throw the whole family into conflict on what to do and how to behave。 It also looks into how abuse as a child makes you a certain kind of person as you get older。 It looks at the dynamics of a marriage also。 I flew through this one and it is told by 4 different points of view which really brings the story a lot more depth。 Very good！！！

This was a good family drama， but I think I was expecting more of a mystery when I first picked it up so I was a little disappointed that I didn’t get that。 Overall I enjoyed the characters and their development and there were even some jaw dropping moments。 Definitely a good debut novel and would consider reading more。 3。5 ⭐️

For various reasons I’ve turned to much more than my usual one crappy summer read this year。 A few have surprised me， some have been unreadable， and some， like this one， I rip through like pulling off a bandaid。 Readable， just。 This could maybe be a solid three star read in more capable hands， with some major tweaks。 But alas， I need more depth of character and more astute descriptions of emotions。 Here you will find many chests feeling tight and inexplicable moves。 Just not for me。

You’re guaranteed to guess the twist but it’s still a fun journey getting there。 Plus the victim’s story is really interesting。 The fight against feeling like a victim when something unthinkable happens to you。
