Summary

A gorgeously illustrated, modern retelling of the classic The Little Engine That Could, sharing the timely message that everyone's journey is different, and that sometimes, success comes from a helping hand。

Graduation day is finally here! The Little Blue Engine, the Yellow Passenger Engine, and the Red Freight Engine are excited to take their final test of Engine School: making their first solo trip over the mountain。 But each engine encounters different challenges and obstacles on their journey。 Gorgeous illustrations by Lou Fancher and Steve Johnson combine with a poignant story told by Bob McKinnon to remind a new generation of readers to think they can。

I first read a review of this book in Fast Company, which isn't where one normally sees articles about children's books。 The magazine often questions the values favored by organizations and institutions however, including the idea of meritocracy, which I readily admit I have pushed, to my students and my own children。 ("Do well in school and your success/hard work/perfect grades will be rewarded financially and socially," which has its dark side: "Fail and it's on you/your bad attitude/your lazi I first read a review of this book in Fast Company, which isn't where one normally sees articles about children's books。 The magazine often questions the values favored by organizations and institutions however, including the idea of meritocracy, which I readily admit I have pushed, to my students and my own children。 ("Do well in school and your success/hard work/perfect grades will be rewarded financially and socially," which has its dark side: "Fail and it's on you/your bad attitude/your laziness/[pick a personal weakness]。") So I was intrigued by Three Little Engines, which uses the story of the Little Engine That Could to teach empathy for those who try but don't always "win," at least in the traditional sense。 An old veteran engine, the Little Blue Engine's teacher, leads her through a Socratic reflection on why she succeeded in clearing the mountainous track while her classmates did not。 It might come off as heavy-handed to some readers, but I thought the lessons were delivered in a way that children can understand。 I knocked a star off for the illustrations, which I sometimes found cluttered and overly busy。 (There's a reason why the illustrations by George and Doris Hauman in the original edition are considered classic: they're sweet, colorful and memorable for their simplicity, which isn't to say they are 'simple。' My childhood copy of the book got read to shreds, mainly because I loved the pictures so much。) 。。。more

I liked the concept and the energy here, but not the execution。 The message of helping others, especially those who may have a harder path to success is obviously a good one - but it came across heavy-handed and meh。 Art was meh as well。Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for this eARC in exchange for my honest review。
