This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 Alex Rider goes up against "Nightshade"， who we met briefly at the end of the last novel。 We also learn more about Mrs。 Jones' past which has been hinted at in the past。 Alex goes to Gibraltar prison as Julius Grief （call back to Pont Blanc， which was nice） and befriends Freddy （Number Nine） and helps him to escape。 Number Nine leads him back to Nightshade HQ in Greece and there Alex learns about "Leap of Faith"， a terrorist attack to be launched on London with a deadly nerve agent。 Alex manages Alex Rider goes up against "Nightshade"， who we met briefly at the end of the last novel。 We also learn more about Mrs。 Jones' past which has been hinted at in the past。 Alex goes to Gibraltar prison as Julius Grief （call back to Pont Blanc， which was nice） and befriends Freddy （Number Nine） and helps him to escape。 Number Nine leads him back to Nightshade HQ in Greece and there Alex learns about "Leap of Faith"， a terrorist attack to be launched on London with a deadly nerve agent。 Alex manages to get through to Number Nine's brainwashing with a memento from his past and eventually saves the day。The permanent undersecretary Royce is revealed to have orchestrated the entire scheme to wipe clean the high echelons of the British parliament to have a clean slate to begin building anew， as he believed that the present politicians were too focused on their personal gains and not those of the world and country。 While this sounds like a sympathetic goal， the thousands of civilians caught in the midst would simply have been collateral damage to Royce。 。。。more

Started this 12th book with some trepidation; how can Horowitz sustain my interest in this series for over 20 years？ However he does it again in this teen version， reminiscent of Forsyth’s “Day of the Jackal” and even leaves me hankering for the next book in the series！ A solid good read， so long you aren’t too concerned with the timeline discrepancies…by now if you’re really fastidious， Alex Rider would have taken down one international crime syndicate for every month of him being 15 years old。

After being pretty underwhelmed at the previous entry to the series I read this one mostly because I was under the impression that it was the last book in the series and I was curious about how Horowitz would wrap things up （I was correct but missing the detail that it is the last book in the series so far）。 The book took a while to get going （and as it was doing so Horowitz dropped some astonishingly incorrect 'factoids' that had me speechless）。 Like I understand that Horowitz was never a Girl After being pretty underwhelmed at the previous entry to the series I read this one mostly because I was under the impression that it was the last book in the series and I was curious about how Horowitz would wrap things up （I was correct but missing the detail that it is the last book in the series so far）。 The book took a while to get going （and as it was doing so Horowitz dropped some astonishingly incorrect 'factoids' that had me speechless）。 Like I understand that Horowitz was never a Girl Guide but while it is one organisation it operates differently in different countries and what he described was American Guides in England！ He also calls a slip knot a reef knot， which come on those are like the two most basic knots （besides tying your shoelaces） and they are verydifferent！ There is also an offhand remark about there being no Adidas sold in Brazil which is just so out there I don't know how to deal with it。 Does this man not know how popular football is in Brazil？ Does he think it's just solid Favellas？？ I would like to remind Mr Horowitz that having a highly detailed writing style means you have to ensure the details you put in are correct or maybe don't write like that？ Small but glaring inaccuracies aside， once Alex became involved in the story things became pretty fun！ This book is much less flashy than other entries in the series with Alex cut off from his usual wacky gadgets as well as any outside help so it was interesting to see him only able to rely on himself。 There is one particular situation Alex gets landed in that was extremely tense and exciting。 The villains introduced in this book are effectively a Scorpia replacement - but possibly more ominous - and I enjoyed the unusual cult angle taken （as opposed to the 'be careful who you bully in school - they might become famous and then try to kill every child in the country decades later in retaliation' type motives that the series is more accustomed to。 It was nice to have a villain that was just nasty with no attempts at moralising and I really felt for the Nightshade operatives and wondered what was to become of them。 。。。more

Having very little time to recover from the last mission， Alex Rider is sent by MI6 Special Operations to infiltrate a new and sinister organisation known only as Nightshade。 Alex is on his own， with the fate of thousands of people resting in his hands。—This book definitely felt like a step up from the previous books in this series， there was development of all the characters and the ending wasn’t as rushed as some that had come before。 Unlike other books which have several things going on at on Having very little time to recover from the last mission， Alex Rider is sent by MI6 Special Operations to infiltrate a new and sinister organisation known only as Nightshade。 Alex is on his own， with the fate of thousands of people resting in his hands。—This book definitely felt like a step up from the previous books in this series， there was development of all the characters and the ending wasn’t as rushed as some that had come before。 Unlike other books which have several things going on at once， Nightshade had one storyline and a start and finishing point。 It made it feel like the author had taken their time to develop this book。 They also take on a more mature feel to them， which I noticed in this and the last book。 It covers themes of religion， child manipulation and abuse of power。 The complexity of the characters， morally， elevated the book。 I loved that there was the return of Tom - Alex’s best friend - who actually joined him on the mission and it made them both feel more dimensional。 However， my main issue is with Alex himself。 At this point in the series， he hasn’t aged at all。 He’s still 15 and while I understand that’s a big part of the storyline and why the missions are successful， I would love a long break between this and the potential next book for Alex to age a few years and to see the effects of what’s happened to him， take place。 The teenage spy who no-one would guess is a spy because he’s 15 is kind of done for me， now， and I’d like to see where he could be taken。 。。。more

I always adored the Alex Rider series and this book was just as good as the other adventures。 Horowitz introduced me to the reluctant hero and it was one of the few books which had a male main character for young readers， among those Harry Potter， Percy Jackson， and Eragon feature， but I don't recall many other characters who were male and the main story leads when I was younger。Alex Rider is recruited again for a deadly mission and he is the only one who can pull it off。 Freddy Gray was close t I always adored the Alex Rider series and this book was just as good as the other adventures。 Horowitz introduced me to the reluctant hero and it was one of the few books which had a male main character for young readers， among those Harry Potter， Percy Jackson， and Eragon feature， but I don't recall many other characters who were male and the main story leads when I was younger。Alex Rider is recruited again for a deadly mission and he is the only one who can pull it off。 Freddy Gray was close to a foil or perhaps a warped mirror of who Alex is， but placing the two of them together could only spell trouble。 The weaving of Julius Grief into the story was well done， giving means and a fitting twist。 If you're no stranger to the Alex Rider series， then you'll be able to pick up on who the leak is and piece together the plan with Alex along the way。Would highly recommend for adventurers and spy lovers。 。。。more

3。5 Stars - not a bad story as story goes， unrealistic escapism， but the series is getting old， not a lot of change from each book。 Will read next one in series （if it comes out）， but no rush。。。
