Summary

Does the advent of capitalism and, indeed, civilisation cause more violence than it prevents? Is there violence in the simple idea of 'the neighbour'? And could the appropriate form of action against violence simply be to contemplate, to think?

In this passionate plea for awareness, Žižek turns his unflinching gaze on the capitalist democracies we live in。 He explores the bloody totalitarian regimes of the last century and that violence which is named 'divine'。

Drawing on high and low culture, Kant, Lacan, jokes and contemporary cinema, this celebrated academic turned philosophical icon discusses the inherent violence of globalisation, fundamentalism and language in a work that will confirm his standing as one of our most erudite and incendiary modern thinkers。

This is a book poised to set a new agenda for our thinking about violence。

Brillante e sconclusionato - come il suo autore。

Zizek is aggravating, pedantic, mercurial—and at the same time endearing。 I laughed out loud all the time reading this。 He’s funny。 And even tho he gets some things kinda wrong, or he could be more rigorous, or he makes some logical leaps I really cringe at, the take-away is essential。 This is definitely one of the best books I’ve read all year, certainly one that’s going to lurk at the edges of my brain for the rest of my life。

At times, Zizek seems to get lost in his own meandering thoughts, jumping from one provocative thought on cultural theory to the next and bombarding the reader with ideas, questions and observations。 Do not expect neatly laid-out answers to society's biggest problems from this work, nor a thorough philosophical treatise on the concept of Violence。 Instead, this book challenges the reader to think outside of their preconceptions on several topics loosely related to violence。 There is wisdom to be At times, Zizek seems to get lost in his own meandering thoughts, jumping from one provocative thought on cultural theory to the next and bombarding the reader with ideas, questions and observations。 Do not expect neatly laid-out answers to society's biggest problems from this work, nor a thorough philosophical treatise on the concept of Violence。 Instead, this book challenges the reader to think outside of their preconceptions on several topics loosely related to violence。 There is wisdom to be found here, although it is often hidden in overly complicated psychoanalytic jargon and at times repetitive sequences。 。。。more

what a truly superb and insightful book - loved the imagery at the end of the state almost being an insolent child relying on democratic participation of the masses , concluding on inaction being the most violent thing to do! it’s cynical and gives you some proper good thinking points and even makes you laugh !!! creasing 24/7 at this hew

zizek establishes himself as an incredibly well read philosopher with provocative and nuanced views on objective and subjective violences。 he here develops the thesis that violence takes sublime (objective) and real (subjective) forms。 by analyzing six different political events, he draws from the work of Lacan, Hegel, and Benjamin to create a coherent perspective。the examples are outdated, and the prose is lack luster。 in my view, zizek fails to be direct in his articulation。 some tangents are zizek establishes himself as an incredibly well read philosopher with provocative and nuanced views on objective and subjective violences。 he here develops the thesis that violence takes sublime (objective) and real (subjective) forms。 by analyzing six different political events, he draws from the work of Lacan, Hegel, and Benjamin to create a coherent perspective。the examples are outdated, and the prose is lack luster。 in my view, zizek fails to be direct in his articulation。 some tangents are recycled jokes or stories from other works, and in some areas his writing lacks rigor。nonetheless, I believe that an engaged reader with a global perspective on more recent contemporary events can extrapolate the theories here presented, and create a model for understanding violence in the modern global capitalist world。 the provocations are extremely inspiring for any reader。 。。。more

Feels sorta like those rappers who try to fit in as many syllables into a line as they can。 There's style here, but that rhetorical profile is far more unified than the argument/arguments itself。 He doesn't stay on any point long enough to really shake the foundations of what he is questioning, and the case studies don't cohere into anything beyond a set of remarks around the theme。 I'm willing to give him another shot for sure, but I just didn't find this one convincing or even intellectually p Feels sorta like those rappers who try to fit in as many syllables into a line as they can。 There's style here, but that rhetorical profile is far more unified than the argument/arguments itself。 He doesn't stay on any point long enough to really shake the foundations of what he is questioning, and the case studies don't cohere into anything beyond a set of remarks around the theme。 I'm willing to give him another shot for sure, but I just didn't find this one convincing or even intellectually provocative。 。。。more

。。。more

I really enjoyed Slavoj Žižek analysis on Violence。 What it stems from and the types of violence。 The chapter/discussion on religion is something, people, are too afraid to realize。 Interesting take on voting abstention。 While some regard it as your civic duty and not doing so creates a outlet to shame you。 Others might see it as a revolt of the system!
