Summary

It is not a peaceful time in the Dells。 In King City, the young King Nash is clinging to the throne, while rebel lords in the north and south build armies to unseat him。 War is coming。 And the mountains and forest are filled with spies and thieves。 This is where Fire lives, a girl whose beauty is impossibly irresistible and who can control the minds of everyone around her。 Exquisitely romantic, this companion to the highly praised Graceling has an entirely new cast of characters, save for one person who plays a pivotal role in both books。 You don't need to have read Graceling to love Fire。 But if you haven't, you'll be dying to read it next。

This edition includes an article by and an interview with Kristin Cashore, as well as a sneak peek at her next book, Bitterblue!

Archer is 20 and Brigan is 22。 And Archer and Fire started sleeping together when Archer was 18 and Fire only 15。 Later in the book, we find out 20 year old Archer also sleeps with a 15 year old guard。 But the audience is led to sympathize with Archer’s actions as a result of his heart-break/rejection by Fire instead of repulsed by his predatory and grooming behavior。 This book felt like a plot line to groom young readers into believing predatory and abusive behavior out of “love” is romantic。 。。。more

It was another good story! I really really have come to appreciate romances where the protagonists actually have some emotional maturity and don't spend half the book not telling each other how they feel or blaming themselves for some crap that they couldn't help。 It's so nice! It was hard for me to understand this book。 I still feel like I missed underlying messages and meanings。 The beginning was slow。There are things I like also。 Different ,realistic depictions of relationships and human nature is some of them。

I really enjoyed the beginning of this book (ignoring the weird, lengthy sentences that sometimes didn't make sense lol) but I felt it got worse as it went along。It starts with a prologue that introduces us to a character that appears later in the book, I was kinda confused though because he didn't show up for quite a bit so I thought that it was like a prologue in all the books and wasn't actually specific to the plot of this story。 Thats not really a problem but I think if you have a character I really enjoyed the beginning of this book (ignoring the weird, lengthy sentences that sometimes didn't make sense lol) but I felt it got worse as it went along。It starts with a prologue that introduces us to a character that appears later in the book, I was kinda confused though because he didn't show up for quite a bit so I thought that it was like a prologue in all the books and wasn't actually specific to the plot of this story。 Thats not really a problem but I think if you have a character deserving of a prologue they should show up before its 75% complete。As I said earlier, there were a lot of weird and long sentences that either were unedited or just weren't very good lol。 I get that it could have been a writing style, but it felt like a lot of unnecessary detail was added and it sort of broke the immersion of the story as I'd have to stop every couple of pages to reread a whole section that didn't make sense。I thought Fire as a character was okay, the rest of them were fine too I guess。 None of them were really special, they all kinda felt 2D instead of like completely separate characters but I didn't really mind。 I am confused about one thing (with the characters at least) is (view spoiler)[why the author decided to kill off Archer (Fires friend)。 He shows up for like 30 pages which doesn't really give you time to actually invest yourself in him as a character which just kinda makes his death pointless。 Maybe he shows up more in the 1st book (apparently you can read the 1st and 2nd interchangeably) but I just didn't really care about him or his death, it felt like a page filler (hide spoiler)]。Overall I thought it was okay, the story wasn't anything particularly special nor were the characters, but it wasn't terrible :) 。。。more

4。2 stars So good omg! Fire was such a great perspective to read from, she felt real and fleshed out。 I really appreciated how emotional she could be but it was never portrayed, or perceived by other characters, as weak or ‘girly’。 The whole story was incredibly feminist but in a subtle way, the character’s feminism wasn’t a plot point or shoved in the readers face。 It was just there, I enjoyed reading that portrayal of feminism。 Fire was bi, there were discussions of men thinking they owned her 4。2 stars So good omg! 'Graceling' is one of my favorite YA fantasy novels of all time, so Fire was a highly anticipated next read。 I was skeptical at first, because Fire is the epitome of the "she's not like other girls" trope: she's a heroine who is objectively deemed the most beautiful woman in the world (and she highly resents this fact), she's desired by every man who meets her, and on top of that, she can control the thoughts and feelings of nearly everyone around her。 I mean, if I were to explain this to someon 'Graceling' is one of my favorite YA fantasy novels of all time, so Fire was a highly anticipated next read。 I was skeptical at first, because Fire is the epitome of the "she's not like other girls" trope: she's a heroine who is objectively deemed the most beautiful woman in the world (and she highly resents this fact), she's desired by every man who meets her, and on top of that, she can control the thoughts and feelings of nearly everyone around her。 I mean, if I were to explain this to someone who hasn't read the book, they'd surely be rolling their eyes, and I can't really blame them, because I certainly felt the same in the beginning。 Fire's beauty is so incredible, it even forces men into uncontrollable animals reduced to their sexual desire several times throughout the story。 It seems an outlandish concept, but Cashore expertly crafted a dynamic, strong character out of it。I couldn't put it down。 Cashore's writing is just so well done that the cliches and tropes are overpowered and something truly beautiful and powerful is created。 Though I didn't enjoy it as much as 'Graceling', I was still hooked to this story and it's characters, and even cried a couple times during the heart-breaking ending。 The world-building was incredible: this was actually one thing I did enjoy more than Graceling。 I loved the beautifully-colored monsters and the way they were both widely feared and loved at the same time, just as Fire is。 I grew to care greatly for the characters, even the ones with obvious flaws like Archer, who is controlling, jealous, and angry, but he also cares for Fire in a way no one else does and has a dedicated and strong devotion to the people he loves。 Fire goes from a woman who hides from the world, afraid of becoming her manipulative, tyrannical father to a confident, powerful heroine who learns to use her beauty and power to improve the lives of others, separating herself from her father's horrible legacy。If Fire and Brigan's romance hadn't fell so flat, I might've given this 5 stars。 I knew it was going to happen but I still found it a bit unbelievable when it did。 Luckily, it wasn't a huge part of Fire's story, but it was still a bit disappointing and I felt the novel would've really went from 4 to 5 stars if Cashore spent more time developing their relationship。 However, I still really loved this book and would recommend it to any fan of 'Graceling'。my favorite quotes: "It seemed to her that it shouldn't be so easy to make a man into a fool""'My life is an apology for the life of my father'""She wondered if a person could be powerful, but inside be broken into pieces, and shaking, all the time""'I think,' she said, 'that sometimes we don't feel the things that we are。 But others can feel them。 I feel your strength。'" 。。。more

Though, this is very much a YA。 You know my smutty heart always wants some spice。 Sigh。 Too bad it wasn’t a New Adult。 But the banter and dialogue and relationship between Fire and Brigan was still quite satisfying。 I gobbled up every word, giddy each scene they had together。 I came to love their quiet moments, and the way they grew towards each other。 The way they grew to understand each other。 It was…sigh…so sweet。I loved the world Cashore built, morphing away from the one we came to understand in Graceling by taking us to a different part of the map。 In the Dells, animals come in vivid bright colors that make them monstrous。 They snare their victims with their minds and beauty。 But none are more dangerous or beautiful than human monsters。 Fire is the last of her kind。 A human monster。 With hair the color of sunsets。 And she carries with her the guilt of having a monstrous father who nearly destroyed the kingdom。 But she is determined to be different from him。 And she carries a secret that most would praise her for。 The plot and presentation of ideas was EXCELLENT! There are quite a few secrets from the past。 We don’t discover them immediately。 They are sprinkled through the story。 And I began to have my suspicions, but was quite impressed with how Cashore handled them。 This was something I greatly appreciated about the writing。 Everything was woven intricately for a YA, with a good level of political intrigue and political history to drive things。As far as YA fantasy goes, this book was a slam dunk。 Whenever I’m rating a book that has 5 star potential, I always consider my experience while reading it。 Was it un-put-down-able? Was it addictive? Was I thinking about it for long periods while going about my day? Yes, yes, yes。 In this case it was all of those things! 𝗠𝗬 𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚: 𝟱/𝟱⭐️ 。。。more

3。5*I really liked being back in this world (the graceling realm??), again, but this book was kinda boring。 (I'm only adding an extra star because I'm a bit biased。)Fire was kinda annoying throughout the majority of the book。 She was quite whiny and childish。The beggining of the book was also boring as well。But other than that the book was great。 3。5*I really liked being back in this world (the graceling realm??), again, but this book was kinda boring。 (I'm only adding an extra star because I'm a bit biased。)Fire was kinda annoying throughout the majority of the book。 She was quite whiny and childish。The beggining of the book was also boring as well。But other than that the book was great。 。。。more
