Summary

A previously published edition of ISBN 9781250254368 is here。

For seventeen-year-old Fable, the daughter of the most powerful trader in the Narrows, the sea is the only home she has ever known。 It’s been four years since the night she watched her mother drown during an unforgiving storm。 The next day her father abandoned her on a legendary island filled with thieves and little food。 To survive she must keep to herself, learn to trust no one, and rely on the unique skills her mother taught her。 The only thing that keeps her going is the goal of getting off the island, finding her father, and demanding her rightful place beside him and his crew。 To do so Fable enlists the help of a young trader named West to get her off the island and across the Narrows to her father。

But her father’s rivalries and the dangers of his trading enterprise have only multiplied since she last saw him, and Fable soon finds that West isn't who he seems。 Together, they will have to survive more than the treacherous storms that haunt the Narrows if they're going to stay alive。

Welcome to a world made dangerous by the sea and by those who wish to profit from it。 Where a young girl must find her place and her family while trying to survive in a world built for men。 Fable takes you on a spectacular journey filled with romance, intrigue, and adventure。

I was not a fan of this book。 The plot interested me and I would like to know how the story plays out, however, this was more on the young scale for young adult。 I was not a fan of the world in this book。 Very nautical which is not what I typically venture toward。 There was a lot of set up- too much is needed for this world。 There are too many rules (both in the story line and just in general to make this book work)。 The sea and ship descriptions are very in depth and detailed, which I could hav I was not a fan of this book。 The plot interested me and I would like to know how the story plays out, however, this was more on the young scale for young adult。 I was not a fan of the world in this book。 Very nautical which is not what I typically venture toward。 There was a lot of set up- too much is needed for this world。 There are too many rules (both in the story line and just in general to make this book work)。 The sea and ship descriptions are very in depth and detailed, which I could have done without。 I would give the author another shot but I do not think I’m going to finish this series。 I would not recommend。 。。。more

2。5 starsUnfortunately, after reading the last page I felt deeply disappointed by this book。In my opinion it was always a bit too simple, many problems were solved in few passages and everything worked out too smoothly。 Also, the love story was mostly non-existent。 I understood what was going on only at the end of the novel。At first, the book was just an okay read for me, nothing more and nothing less。 But halfway through the book I felt bored by what was happening。 It didn’t capture me as much 2。5 starsUnfortunately, after reading the last page I felt deeply disappointed by this book。In my opinion it was always a bit too simple, many problems were solved in few passages and everything worked out too smoothly。 Also, the love story was mostly non-existent。 I understood what was going on only at the end of the novel。At first, the book was just an okay read for me, nothing more and nothing less。 But halfway through the book I felt bored by what was happening。 It didn’t capture me as much as I thought it would have。I think I won’t continue reading it, despite the predictable ending。 。。。more

Realistically, I know this isn’t a 5 star book。 The world building was okay and the plot was just interesting enough, though a bit slow。But the characters…。I had to stay up until 5:00 am to make sure that a character wasn’t being tortured to death and if that doesn’t justify my rating, I don’t know what does。 I cared so much about everyone。 The author really has a natural talent for writing relationships, specifically those that develop slowly。 My only qualm with this was all of the sailing term Realistically, I know this isn’t a 5 star book。 The world building was okay and the plot was just interesting enough, though a bit slow。But the characters…。I had to stay up until 5:00 am to make sure that a character wasn’t being tortured to death and if that doesn’t justify my rating, I don’t know what does。 I cared so much about everyone。 The author really has a natural talent for writing relationships, specifically those that develop slowly。 My only qualm with this was all of the sailing terminology, which was to be expected in a book like this but everything was thrown at me with the assumption that I already knew what the book was talking about。 I didn’t。 But that’s probably a me problem。 。。。more

Made it to ch 11 but I can’t see how this book will ever have anything worthwhile to say。 DNFing, and not looking back。 I’m tired of books being overhyped by some subscription service like FairyLoot or BOTM with no one realizing they have no substance。 I’m going to start ignoring reviews that come from these sources。 I no longer trust they’re worth my time。

Epic thrilling fantasy! Fable is greatly enjoyable and easy to get into。 The world building is fantastic and our main character, Fable, stole the show。 She's fierce, independent, and brave but not without faults and is a great character to look up to, especially to young readers。 This is also a fantasy with vivid description and great details and contribute to the incredible world building。 The side characters are great and diverse with their own stories to tell。 And put everything together just Epic thrilling fantasy! So good! Intriguing story, great world-building, and the story hooks you quick。 I was rooting for Fable, she was written with depth- she was not perfect but was very likable to me as a reader。 Even though Saint was frustrating, I wanted to know more about him。 I can’t wait to read the next book in the duology!

The second in a row of ocean-set, pirate books that I've read。 I loved this from page one。 It's so wonderfully written with a beautiful, rich world and setting and a colourful cast of characters。 The characters are really well-crafted and play well off each other, especially Fable and West, whose simmering, slow-burn romance is one of many things I'm looking forward to seeing more of in Namesake。 Fable makes mistakes along the way, as do all of the other characters, but the thing I liked about i The second in a row of ocean-set, pirate books that I've read。 I loved this from page one。 It's so wonderfully written with a beautiful, rich world and setting and a colourful cast of characters。 The characters are really well-crafted and play well off each other, especially Fable and West, whose simmering, slow-burn romance is one of many things I'm looking forward to seeing more of in Namesake。 Fable makes mistakes along the way, as do all of the other characters, but the thing I liked about it was it was realistic and they learned from it。 Adrienne Young's writing pulls you in right away and makes you feel like you're there with the characters on their adventures。 The date started/finished should give you an indicator of how unwilling I was to put this down。 。。。more

I went into this book not knowing if I’d enjoy it or not, I also impulsively bought it。 I’m not mad at all。 It was so good!! AND I read this book all in one day (without skimming) which means a lot as I usually take 3-5 days to read a book。 I’m not very good at reviews but I’m basically saying GO READ THIS BOOK!!

Fable was one of those books that just took me by surprise - not that I didn't expect it to be good, per se, but I just never anticipated liking it as much as I did。 Fable is absolutely bursting at the seams with heart, tenacity, intrigue, and the most enticing romance I've read in YA fantasy in a hot minute。Our main character and narrator, Fable, is exactly the kind of heroine I want to read about - determined, fierce, stubborn, and smart。 She is a scrappy, resourceful survivor, who works hard Fable was one of those books that just took me by surprise - not that I didn't expect it to be good, per se, but I just never anticipated liking it as much as I did。 Fable is absolutely bursting at the seams with heart, tenacity, intrigue, and the most enticing romance I've read in YA fantasy in a hot minute。Our main character and narrator, Fable, is exactly the kind of heroine I want to read about - determined, fierce, stubborn, and smart。 She is a scrappy, resourceful survivor, who works hard to get what she wants - which is to find her father and establish herself within his trading empire。This book has everything I want from a good YA fantasy。 It boasts a truly intriguing and well-developed plot, a unique and exciting world, and a crew that becomes a lovable found family。 The relationships between all the characters felt genuine and very sweet。 West and Fable's slow-burn relationship gave me legitimate butterflies - a challenge, given that this is a YA fantasy and I have been reading a lot of adult romance novels recently! The feelings between them come off as very genuine, and their interactions (even simple lines or minuscule actions) were heart-stoppingly romantic and executed expertly。The writing is also really beautiful and easy to read。 Definitely strikes the right balance between being accessible to young adult readers whilst also being well-written and technically very impressive。 It definitely intrigues me as to Young's other series, which I'll be adding to my (incredibly extensive) TBR!There was really nothing I could fault about this book - maybe besides wanting a little more development or time spent expanding the plot, but only because I think it ended far too quickly for my liking! And with that cliffhanger, I immediately ordered Namesake so I can finish the duology ASAP。 I can't wait to see what comes next in Fable's story! 。。。more

Highly recommend for anybody looking for an amazing young adult fantasy! The plot was amazing, and left me on a cliffhanger that had me reeling! This is safe for younger readers, there is one small fade to black scene that barely hints at sexual relations。

This book has such a great plot with such interesting world building。 I loved the action and adventure, but honestly felt it would have been better off without the romance。 The characters are a little two dimensional and the romance is just completely out of the blue and unexplained。

Tia

Definitely recommend, very similar to “Daughter of the Pirate King” (The romance was rushed and sudden。) I liked the heroine though, she does tend to cry a lot but the concept of the book was pretty cool。

2。5/5 Definitely going against the grain here with this one。 I didn't really like it for a few reasons, but it was interesting and an okay read。 1。 There were a few inconsistencies that snagged my attention。 For example, when they are in the middle of the horrible storm and she has no shoes, beaten and bloody。 She is thrown under ship to stay safe and the next sentence she has boots on? Another example is she hasn't eaten for days, she hasn't really eaten well for 4 years, yet any scene she is o 2。5/5 Definitely going against the grain here with this one。 I didn't really like it for a few reasons, but it was interesting and an okay read。 1。 There were a few inconsistencies that snagged my attention。 For example, when they are in the middle of the horrible storm and she has no shoes, beaten and bloody。 She is thrown under ship to stay safe and the next sentence she has boots on? Another example is she hasn't eaten for days, she hasn't really eaten well for 4 years, yet any scene she is offered food or around food she passes, or she eats small amounts。 Someone who ate kelp to stay alive wouldn't leave food on a table or a plate half empty。 2。 I get really annoyed at the pain for the sake of pain。 She supposedly has a almost unbearable fever, yet all she gets is a little dizzy in once scene where she looks in a mirror, then it's forgotten about。 Fable is constantly beaten and abused yet she is able to work 2/3 days without food and a fever no problemo。 I don't like when you make a character weak and then use pain as a way to build them up。 That's not how it works, especially when you forget what injuries you have caused them。 3。 Flashbacks of the same scene 3。5 times。 I get flashbacks, I get the power and the effect they can have to a story。 Having the same scene, the same flashback and the same story said 3/4 times is too much。 I ended up skipping the second time onwards。 If you want to remind the reader you can remind them, you don't have to say the same 2 pages of flashback each time。 。。。more

Rating: 4。5/5What an absolute gem of a YA Fantasy!!!This was my first experience with Adrienne Young, having yet to read Sky in the Deep, and I could not be more impressed by this story and the sea-faring adventure on which it took me。  When she was just 14, Fable's father abandoned her on an island in the middle of the sea。 Their ship had just sunk, Fable's mother on board, and now Fable was being left behind。 But her father, one of the most powerful traders in the Narrows, made her a deal: If Rating: 4。5/5What an absolute gem of a YA Fantasy!!!This was my first experience with Adrienne Young, having yet to read Sky in the Deep, and I could not be more impressed by this story and the sea-faring adventure on which it took me。  When she was just 14, Fable's father abandoned her on an island in the middle of the sea。 Their ship had just sunk, Fable's mother on board, and now Fable was being left behind。 But her father, one of the most powerful traders in the Narrows, made her a deal: If she made it off the island, she would be given what's hers。Four years later and Fable has grown in the rough atmosphere of Jeval, dredging the waters for pyre that she uses to trade for copper。 She is hoping to soon have enough to barter her way onto a trading ship for passage to the Narrows, where she hopes to confront her Father and take what's owed。 But trouble on Jeval finds her leaving sooner than expected and she finds herself begging for passage on the Marigold, and its helmsmen, West, whom she has been selling pyre too for two years。 The crew is unhappy about her presence, but Fable proves her worth and once she is face-to-face with her father, she realizes that things are going to be more complicated than first imagined。。。I cannot say I fully knew what to expect from this going in, but what I received was a solid, action-packaged, adventure on the seas with intriguing characters, complicated family dynamics, and a smidge of politics, and of course, the villian we have to conquer。 I was immersed in Fable and her journey from the very beginning and found that this was so easily and compulsively readable, while being substantial and well-built, every page having a purpose。 Adrienne Young used her space so well, leaving out the arduous filler and making every scene truly count。Saying this was a "fun" time would be accurate, but I feel that gives an incorrect tone more apt for a story like "Daughter of the Pirate King" by Tricia Levenseller。 This book definitely had far more oomph and heavier implications and it was truly a solid YA fantasy。 I am absolutely going to be continuing with this story, especially after that cliffhanger! 。。。more
