Summary

Profiler Roy Hazelwood is the world's leading expert on the strangest and most dangerous of all aberrant offenders--the sexual criminal。 In Dark Dreams he reveals the twisted motives and perverse thinking that go into the most reprehensible crimes。 He also catalogs the innovative and remarkably effective techniques--techniques that he helped pioneer at the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit--that allow Law Enforcement agents to construct psychological profiles of the offenders who comit them。

Hazelwood has helped track down some of the most violent and well known criminals in modern history; in Dark Dreams he takes readers into his world--a sinister world inhabited by scores of dangerous offenders for every Roy Hazelwood who would put them behind bars。 These are sexual sadists, serial rapists, child molesters, and serial killers。 The cases he describes are as shocking as they are perplexing; their resolutions are as fascinating as they are innovative:

* A young woman disappears from the convenience store where she works。 Her body is later found in a field, strapped to a makeshift St。 Andrew's Cross and mutilated beyond description。 Who committed this heinous crime? And why?

* A teenager's corpse is found hanging in a storm sewer。 His clothes are neatly folded by the entrance and a stopwatch lies in the grime beneath him。 Is he the victim of a bizarre, ritualistic murder 。 。 。 or an elaborate masturbatory fantasy gone awry?

* A married couple, driving with their toddler in the back seat, pick up a female hitchhiker。 They kidnap her and for seven years keep her in a box under their bed as a sexual slave。 The wife had agreed to this inhuman arrangement in exchange for a second child。 Who was to blame?

But as gruesome as the crimes are and as unsettling as the odds seem, Hazelwood, writing with veteran journalsit Stephen Michaud, proves that the right amounts of determination and logic can bring even the most cunning and devious criminals to justice。

Dark Dreams is a 2002 Edgar Award Nominee for Best Fact Crime。

I am a huge fan of the show Mindhunter on Netflix and this book is essentially that show in print。 Hazelwood was an FBI profiler and he talks about some of the most memorable cases and more interestingly details what questions he asked and what conclusions he came to and why he came to them in detail。 Fascinating。 I much preferred this to John Douglas's writing on the same topics as Hazelwood has none of the arrogance of Douglas and ensures the focus of his writing is the analysis technique rath I am a huge fan of the show Mindhunter on Netflix and this book is essentially that show in print。 Hazelwood was an FBI profiler and he talks about some of the most memorable cases and more interestingly details what questions he asked and what conclusions he came to and why he came to them in detail。 Fascinating。 I much preferred this to John Douglas's writing on the same topics as Hazelwood has none of the arrogance of Douglas and ensures the focus of his writing is the analysis technique rather than himself。An interesting if dark and sometimes tragic read。 。。。more

An incredible, if macabre, look into the pathology of murderers as well as the sexually motivated criminal。I love reading books written by the founders of the BSU/BAU。 Not only did they help write the guidelines that law enforcement use today, but they pioneered the way for criminal profiling to become acceptable to law enforcement。 Of course that’s primarily due to the fact that profiling works in many cases。 I did like how Roy Hazelwood makes caveats that no profile is perfect and it should be An incredible, if macabre, look into the pathology of murderers as well as the sexually motivated criminal。I love reading books written by the founders of the BSU/BAU。 Not only did they help write the guidelines that law enforcement use today, but they pioneered the way for criminal profiling to become acceptable to law enforcement。 Of course that’s primarily due to the fact that profiling works in many cases。 I did like how Roy Hazelwood makes caveats that no profile is perfect and it should be used as a tool to solve the case vs a document that will all but give them the name and address of the unsub。 Something else I was glad to see stressed in every reference, is that auto-erotic asphyxiation is dangerous。 I also liked that he made sure to point out the difference between sexual bondage vs just restraining a victim for expediency。 He makes this same distinction between any number of other consensual vs criminal behaviors。Overall this book is full of fantastic information for anyone interested in knowing more about profiling of murders and sexual criminals。 The cases can be disturbing, but I felt the descriptions were worded as inoffensively as possible while still giving the needed details for whatever point is being proven by that case。 Highly recommended! 。。。more

I could do with out the moral proselyting。 but otherwise a well-researched book。

This was an insightful true crime book, although at times it read like a psychology textbook。 Hazelwood is not as talented a storyteller as his colleague John Douglass, but like Douglass, his long experience in the FBI's BSU has given him a unique and well informed perspective on the subject。 Each chapter examines a topic, and Hazelwood uses cases he worked on to illustrate his points。 As the title suggests, his focus is on violent sexual crimes, and he avoids more famous criminals and crimes (w This was an insightful true crime book, although at times it read like a psychology textbook。 Hazelwood is not as talented a storyteller as his colleague John Douglass, but like Douglass, his long experience in the FBI's BSU has given him a unique and well informed perspective on the subject。 Each chapter examines a topic, and Hazelwood uses cases he worked on to illustrate his points。 As the title suggests, his focus is on violent sexual crimes, and he avoids more famous criminals and crimes (with the exception of his analysis of Jack the Ripper)。 He outlines how he methodically examined all the evidence in the case, and formed his profiles after extensive and exhaustive research。 Though I did not find him as engaging as Douglass, I have high respect for him, and for all the other people who pioneered modern criminal profiling。 。。。more

The narcissist demands constant admiration。 He does not hesitate to take advantage of others to achieve his goals, and he is indifferent to their feelings and needs。 Essentially, he believes that he is the only one whose satisfaction counts in this world。 Everyone else is just a prop in his background scenery。

First of all if you are getting into this book for criminal mind 101, i would not suggest it。 It is not a book for everyone。 There is no light thievery in this book。 It is about sexual crimes and, particularly, murders that involve at least one sexual element。 It is explicit and goes into graphic detail in a lot of cases。 I read The Evil That Men Do years ago so I knew to a certain extent what I got。 I want you to keep in mind that this book was published in 2001 and some cases are from 60 years First of all if you are getting into this book for criminal mind 101, i would not suggest it。 It is not a book for everyone。 There is no light thievery in this book。 It is about sexual crimes and, particularly, murders that involve at least one sexual element。 It is explicit and goes into graphic detail in a lot of cases。 I read The Evil That Men Do years ago so I knew to a certain extent what I got。 I want you to keep in mind that this book was published in 2001 and some cases are from 60 years ago so certain terms or ideas he wrote are no longer used or agreed upon but his insight shaped the behavior science unit and influenced criminal investigations all over the world so what he said is important。 。。。more

True cases of weird and interesting human (criminal) behaviour。 Not as page turning as Hazelwood’s colleague John Douglas’ ‘Mindhunting’ novels but still a good read

A great study guideRoy Hazelwood uses many examples of violent crime from his distinguished career with the FBI's BAU (and a few point-proving hypotheticals) to explain what behavioral profiling is, what it contains, and how profiles are constructed。 It has been an invaluable tool for my understanding of violent offenders and how the FBI Profilers help law enforcement to catch them。 A great study guideRoy Hazelwood uses many examples of violent crime from his distinguished career with the FBI's BAU (and a few point-proving hypotheticals) to explain what behavioral profiling is, what it contains, and how profiles are constructed。 It has been an invaluable tool for my understanding of violent offenders and how the FBI Profilers help law enforcement to catch them。 。。。more

very good, i would say its somewhat an entry level book。 author goes into details, sometimes trying to write like a novel so you can picture it。 you can double the enjoyment of this book by first watching any homicide related show i。e Dexter or hannibal。 this book is focused on sexual predatory/sadism。

Interesting, if intensely disturbing。 Not the best writing in existence, but you know。 The writer isn't a writer。 It was, at least, clear and concise。What bothers me is that these people are everywhere。 I recognized behaviors in this book that I've seen in people that I know personally。 Terrifying。Glad I read it, but no reason to reread。3 stars。 Interesting, if intensely disturbing。 Not the best writing in existence, but you know。 The writer isn't a writer。 It was, at least, clear and concise。What bothers me is that these people are everywhere。 I recognized behaviors in this book that I've seen in people that I know personally。 Terrifying。Glad I read it, but no reason to reread。3 stars。 。。。more

I have read a lot of later works on this topic, and I think that in light of more modern research this book fall rather flat。 It’s not totally bunk, but there’s a healthy dose of Judeo Christian values coloring what the author describes as pathology。 Sometimes he comes uncomfortably close to implying all homosexuals, all those that like porn, and anyone dabbling in bdsm are on a slippery slope to being in the same category as Ted Bundy。 Broadly, his technique uses statistics and logic to create I have read a lot of later works on this topic, and I think that in light of more modern research this book fall rather flat。 It’s not totally bunk, but there’s a healthy dose of Judeo Christian values coloring what the author describes as pathology。 Sometimes he comes uncomfortably close to implying all homosexuals, all those that like porn, and anyone dabbling in bdsm are on a slippery slope to being in the same category as Ted Bundy。 Broadly, his technique uses statistics and logic to create a helpful profile that when used correctly helps put the right people in prison。 It’s an interesting book, and there’s no replacement for firsthand accounts by profilers if you want to understand their methods。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book! Imagining the dark depraved goings on of the mind of a sexual sadist is a routine thing for a crime writer such as myself。 In fiction, you can't be too real, you can't tell the stories like they happen in real life。 Because if you did, you would be telling the stories found here, in Roy Hazelwood's experience as a profiler and hunter of the depraved。 Yet another in a line of the FBI's elite Behavioral Sciences unit, I found Roy and Steve's work expounded in a clear cut and disturbing vision into Imagining the dark depraved goings on of the mind of a sexual sadist is a routine thing for a crime writer such as myself。 In fiction, you can't be too real, you can't tell the stories like they happen in real life。 Because if you did, you would be telling the stories found here, in Roy Hazelwood's experience as a profiler and hunter of the depraved。 Yet another in a line of the FBI's elite Behavioral Sciences unit, I found Roy and Steve's work expounded in a clear cut and disturbing vision into the realities of these brutal predators。 Hazelwood and Michaud strike a balance between the Douglas and Ressler narratives, and focus more on the crimes here than the other profiler bookers。 I still find value in those other tomes, but Dark Dreams has cut away all the grand standing to focus on the issue at hand。 The worst of the worst, and to explain, as best we can, the workings of these tortured minds。 Gritty, compelling, and narrative, this book will not let you sleep easy anymore。 And you shouldn't, once you know what's out there。 A must read for any true crime follower, or crime writer, period。 。。。more

Broadly valuable insights into behavioral psychology and aberrant criminal behavior。 Roy Hazelwood is one of the giants of the criminal profiling world and the book follows a pretty readable format for the most part。 In every chapter, Hazelwood will present a thesis (for example, an analytical framework for understanding paraphillic desires) and then provide case by case examples of how this can be applied and learned from。 These cases are never gratuitously presented like in other true crime bo Broadly valuable insights into behavioral psychology and aberrant criminal behavior。 Roy Hazelwood is one of the giants of the criminal profiling world and the book follows a pretty readable format for the most part。 In every chapter, Hazelwood will present a thesis (for example, an analytical framework for understanding paraphillic desires) and then provide case by case examples of how this can be applied and learned from。 These cases are never gratuitously presented like in other true crime books。 Hazelwood keeps it factual, to the point, yet still profoundly disturbing (as these things are)。 One of my main problems with the book is his 20th century view of sexual bondage and BDSM culture at large。 He seems to place a strong causal relationship between the very act of sexual bondage and criminal sexual deviancy and I didn't personally feel he approached this relationship very scientifically and his personal conservatism shone through。 There is also a bit of the moralistic "violence and porn on the TV is making the kids crazy" but he is more measured with his view with respect to pornography。Overall an educational and thoroughly readable book。 Clean and neat prose makes it quick to get through。 。。。more
