Summary

Well, that’s one way to have a mid-life crisis I suppose。Sidenote: If I hear the name Huysmans one more time I’m going to break something。

DNF: I couldn't get into this book, quit after a few chapters。 I'm only here to say that, dude, the French have fucked up views of women。 Maybe this book was meant to be a criticism (probably?) but I didn't stick around long enough to find out。 The main character is a total pig, and there's a lot of other books to read that don't have such repulsive protagonists。 DNF: I couldn't get into this book, quit after a few chapters。 I'm only here to say that, dude, the French have fucked up views of women。 Maybe this book was meant to be a criticism (probably?) but I didn't stick around long enough to find out。 The main character is a total pig, and there's a lot of other books to read that don't have such repulsive protagonists。 。。。more

great at times, tedious at others。 this is like if philip roth was a tongue-in-cheek islamaphobe—come for the “west is dead” stuff, stay for religious conversion。 some good food for thought about why and what for a society is organize。i might have given one more star if houllebecq (not going to spell check) could simply have foreseen that notre dame was going to burn down, because there is a scene supposedly set in 2022 where the main character looks out at the cathedral

One of the more thought-provoking books I have ever read, sometimes bitingly satirical and perfectly subtle as a cultural critique。 Reminds us all of the drive for something deeper and the cynicism that permeates Western Society。

Wassup Gamers!Holy moly! This book is good。 I discovered Michel Houellebecq earlier this year and I gotta say wow, dis guy sure knows how to write a book。 I've read this and Serotonin。 I went super speed through both of these。 I couldn't put them down。 It's tough。 I can't define what I love about this book。 It's like fun pessimism! Yeah, that's it! Fun pessimism。 Old Michel tells it how it is。 This happened, then this happened, then this happened。 Bim, bim, bim。 His writing is a contradiction。 I Wassup Gamers!Holy moly! Whoa! What a weird book。 Growing up, I consumed tons of Evangelical media, and as I got older I found that a lot of them were culturally on the defensive: secularism and atheism and liberalism laid obstacles at our feet and we had to passionately and empathetically deal with those obstacles, hoping hoping hoping that they would listen。 That was the main reason I liked Doug Wilson back in the day: he was one of the few guys who did not take the culture that seriously。 Well, few books out there ca Whoa! What a weird book。 Growing up, I consumed tons of Evangelical media, and as I got older I found that a lot of them were culturally on the defensive: secularism and atheism and liberalism laid obstacles at our feet and we had to passionately and empathetically deal with those obstacles, hoping hoping hoping that they would listen。 That was the main reason I liked Doug Wilson back in the day: he was one of the few guys who did not take the culture that seriously。 Well, few books out there can really make you realize how Christianity is positioned to be culturally potent and how dead modern secular culture is。 The author of this book, Michel Houellebecq, is probably a wine-sipping, chain-smoking atheist who doesn't care about God at all。 But he talks。 I feel that he got drunk and disillusioned enough to say what the world is really like in this book, and it's remarkable。 It's full of sexual content, which obviously I would not recommend, even for a college-student。 It's also an odd story, and from here on out, I have to give some spoilers。 (view spoiler)[Well, um, this is the story of an atheistic college professor in France becoming a Muslim and liking it。 If that sounds weird, it reads even weirder。 Houellebecq sets the book in 2022, and presents a situation where Muslims have taken over France's political system。 All the joys of money, of beauty, of sex and wine and academia are shown as sucked of all joy for the modern secularist。 Houellebecq pulls no punches: he says Europeans cannot reproduce themselves, so their culture is weaker。 He even brings in Chesterton's distributivism into the story!!! (Of course, Chesterton has actually played a interesting role in politics by influencing both Gandhi and Michael Collins。) He even says this about atheism: "The argument of the 'watchmaker God,' which Voltaire considered irrefutable, is just as strong today as it was in the eighteenth century。 If anything, it's become even more pertinent as science has drawn closer and closer connections between astrophysics and the motion of particles。 At the end of the day, isn't there something ridiculous about some puny creature, living on an autonomous planet, in a remote spur of an ordinary galaxy, standing up on his hind legs and announcing, 'God does not exist'?" (p。 206)。It's weird too because it makes you kind of think that polygamy sounds cool (it's not, in case anyone is worried about me) and that Islam is a beautiful religion with a healthier vision of the family。The idea of the book, it seems to me, is that Islam is a religion of submission and that human beings are happier when they recognize the constraint of order than when they just do what they like doing。 That's obviously too simple for such a complicated book。 I was going to say that Houellebecq could be motivated by pretty much anything and probably does not really know what he wants, but on reading him, I have to say I am impressed with his honesty: he clearly wants to sound the end of enlightenment philosophy and culture。 He knows this thing has run its course and its time to move on。 We the modern west truly are a drop in the bucket of history。 In some ways, the book reminded me the most of Children of Men, which is also about the failures of liberalism and how it's destroying the family。 No recent book has made me realize this so starkly。 I don't know if I recommend this book, but if you are afraid of the SJWs, just read this book and realize how we've got 'em beat and deep down they know it。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

I have read the Greek translation which - although I do not speak french - I suspect that it is ok。 Nothin extraordinary。 The subject that the book assess is a realistic situation。 However I rate the book high not so much fir the subject as for the writing style。 Generally I consider myself fun of the french literature。 He writes caustic and sarcastic which I really enjoy。 What I love most thought is really the cynicism which I find - strange as it may sound - that I gives a special atmosphere。 I have read the Greek translation which - although I do not speak french - I suspect that it is ok。 Nothin extraordinary。 The subject that the book assess is a realistic situation。 However I rate the book high not so much fir the subject as for the writing style。 Generally I consider myself fun of the french literature。 He writes caustic and sarcastic which I really enjoy。 What I love most thought is really the cynicism which I find - strange as it may sound - that I gives a special atmosphere。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

Still thinking this book over。 As usual, Houellebecq is charming, witty, well-versed, and brilliant。 The book is not a simple polemic against Islam - in fact, one finds oneself on the side of the Muslim Brotherhood quite often throughout the story。 Houellebecq puts us in the shoes (and soul) of a disillusioned Western European - bitterly agnostic, wayward, heart empty and head full。 The country and the Man, then, are perfectly willing to submit to Islam, any alternative to the failure of the Enl Still thinking this book over。 As usual, Houellebecq is charming, witty, well-versed, and brilliant。 The book is not a simple polemic against Islam - in fact, one finds oneself on the side of the Muslim Brotherhood quite often throughout the story。 Houellebecq puts us in the shoes (and soul) of a disillusioned Western European - bitterly agnostic, wayward, heart empty and head full。 The country and the Man, then, are perfectly willing to submit to Islam, any alternative to the failure of the Enlightenment and, with it, modernity。 Houellebecq perhaps wishes to shake us awake through the lens of utter apathy。 Our greatest living author。 。。。more
