Summary

Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland, Ohio。 Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring bookshelves, shattered Glans water goblets, and smashed Liripip wardrobes。 Sales are down, security cameras reveal nothing, and store managers are panicking。

To unravel the mystery, three employees volunteer to work a nine-hour dusk-till-dawn shift。 In the dead of the night, they’ll patrol the empty showroom floor, investigate strange sights and sounds, and encounter horrors that defy the imagination。

A traditional haunted house story in a thoroughly contemporary setting, Horrorstör is designed to retain its luster and natural appearance for a lifetime of use。 Pleasingly proportioned with generous French flaps and a softcover binding, Horrorstör delivers the psychological terror you need in the elegant package you deserve。

So at first I kind of was disappointed by this book。 I hated pretty much every character by the time the real horror started happening, found Amy (the main character) to be exhausting, and was just ready for some excitement to begin。 BUT THE TURNING POINT HIT HARD! Like halfway through the book I was enthralled, I was rooting for Amy, and I was terrified Basil was going to die。 I was so close to tears at the funeral descriptions, and I just LOVED the epilogue to death。 This went from: I'm basica So at first I kind of was disappointed by this book。 I hated pretty much every character by the time the real horror started happening, found Amy (the main character) to be exhausting, and was just ready for some excitement to begin。 BUT THE TURNING POINT HIT HARD! Amy, a 24 year old underachiever, is a store 'partner' at Orske, a retail chain store fashioned under the model of Ikea, Macy's, Bloomingdales, etc。 Everything is going poorly for Amy (she quit school, she's behind on her portion of rent, and she hates her job) until her store manager, Basel (whom she doesn't like) asks her and another employee to work an overnight shift due to recent vandalism afterhours。 She accepts。 What follows is a night that Any won't soon forget; ghosts, vandals, torture, Amy, a 24 year old underachiever, is a store 'partner' at Orske, a retail chain store fashioned under the model of Ikea, Macy's, Bloomingdales, etc。 Everything is going poorly for Amy (she quit school, she's behind on her portion of rent, and she hates her job) until her store manager, Basel (whom she doesn't like) asks her and another employee to work an overnight shift due to recent vandalism afterhours。 She accepts。 What follows is a night that Any won't soon forget; ghosts, vandals, torture, and furniture dis-assembly make this retail overnight extremely unnerving for any normal person, let alone poor Amy who just wants to transfer to another store without being labeled a loser。 If you've ever worked in retail, you'll be able to relate。 Four stars for originality, a few surprises, and being that I myself disliked certain parts of retail made this book a fun read。 。。。more

“Pain and fear have a way of making things simple” I’ve read anything Grady Hendrix has published in a matter of 3 months。 Do I need to tell you anything else or are you already buying his books? Was this as good as “my best friend’s exorcism” and “ the southern book club guide to slaying vampires”? Not really。 Nonetheless, even if not close to Hendrix’s best works “Horrorstör” still manages not only to keep you hooked until the very end but also to deliver an extraordinary coming of age story o “Pain and fear have a way of making things simple” I’ve read anything Grady Hendrix has published in a matter of 3 months。 Do I need to tell you anything else or are you already buying his books? I read three Grady Hendrix novels in a row and this was my least favorite。 I thought the Orsk furniture store was an interesting setting for evil and craziness but, I did not like the "land was a former graveyard" idea。 It was a little too Poltergeist like in that aspect。 It was still enjoyable and I liked the different furniture pieces that headed each chapter。 Even though some of them were torture devices, it still made me want to go to Ikea - even if just for lunch and to play in the furnitur I read three Grady Hendrix novels in a row and this was my least favorite。 I thought the Orsk furniture store was an interesting setting for evil and craziness but, I did not like the "land was a former graveyard" idea。 It was a little too Poltergeist like in that aspect。 It was still enjoyable and I liked the different furniture pieces that headed each chapter。 Even though some of them were torture devices, it still made me want to go to Ikea - even if just for lunch and to play in the furniture settings。 。。。more

A bizarre and spooky novel and one of those nice surprises。I had no expectations about this book,Based on its cover I wouldn’t have paid attention。The reason I prioritize this book was because a friend mentioned it and raised my curiosity。And I loved it。What really pleased me was the writing and the concept。 I enjoy that kind of writing that exudes confidence and passion, even on its simplicity。I thought that the premises and the development were very clever。I wouldn’t say that this book is hila A bizarre and spooky novel and one of those nice surprises。I had no expectations about this book,Based on its cover I wouldn’t have paid attention。The reason I prioritize this book was because a friend mentioned it and raised my curiosity。And I loved it。What really pleased me was the writing and the concept。 I enjoy that kind of writing that exudes confidence and passion, even on its simplicity。I thought that the premises and the development were very clever。I wouldn’t say that this book is hilarious, as it’s not my kind of humour, but I thought that the adds for the furnitures at the opening of each chapter were brilliant。I liked the choice of characters and I enjoyed each one。There are plenty of spooky (some are a bit gory) and sometimes confusing moments, like during the flood part, which I thought was a bit too long。It’s an easy and fast read and I wished that the book was longer。 。。。more

Very interesting concept of storyline and how the book was printed。 Not one of my favorites, though。

Entertaining This was a very entertaining read but not as good as I expected。 It starts ver well but then it goes on with a very naive storyline that’s seems like a cheap horror film。 I expected a bit more。

Such a unique and fun idea but lacked the atmosphere I need to make a horror worth investing in。

Hendrix books are fun — plain and simple。 And Horrorstor is no exception。 As usual, he nails the balance between comedy and horror。 This concept sounds extremely goofy on paper: a haunted knock-off IKEA store。 But Hendrix makes it work。 I really appreciate this about him。 His books usually have a gimmick of some sort, but he sticks to his guns and sees his ideas all the way through, injecting just the right balance of charm to go with the horror。 In lesser hands, this idea could have failed mise Hendrix books are fun — plain and simple。 And Horrorstor is no exception。 As usual, he nails the balance between comedy and horror。 This concept sounds extremely goofy on paper: a haunted knock-off IKEA store。 But Hendrix makes it work。 I really appreciate this about him。 His books usually have a gimmick of some sort, but he sticks to his guns and sees his ideas all the way through, injecting just the right balance of charm to go with the horror。 In lesser hands, this idea could have failed miserably。 But it works surprisingly well。 Of course, we have to talk about the presentation。 This book is designed to look like an IKEA catalogue。 In the early chapters, it showcases furniture typical to a store of this type (sofas, storage compartments, beds, etc。)。 As the book progresses, though, and the horror elements come into play, the “furniture” is swapped out for sinister Medieval-looking torture devices, many of which play into the plot。 This was a really cool touch that I truly appreciated。 Hendrix clearly cares about the aesthetics of his books, and always puts careful thought into the design (a big plus!)。 The one big drawback here, for me at least, was the characters。 Most of them are one-dimensional and forgettable (and actually disappear from the plot for large chunks of time)。 Our lead has a somewhat interesting character arc, but even she is not a very compelling character。 Hendrix’s character work is much stronger in the books that follow this one (We Sold Our Souls, and especially My Best Friend’s Exorcism)。Overall, though, this was a nice change of pace from some of the more serious, super dark stuff I’ve been reading lately。 The story did require a suspension of disbelief in some regards (example: why did it take local police all night to find the well-known, massive furniture store in town?), but then again, what do you expect? It’s a book about a haunted IKEA! Recommended for readers new to the genre, readers who have had the “pleasure” of working in a retail store (Hendrix completely nails the whole corporate brainwashed mentality these stores force employees and managers to adopt) or people just looking for something fun with a spooky edge。 3。75 self-assembled stars out of 5。 I read Horrorstor in one day, which is something I rarely if ever do。 That should tell you all you need to know about the fun factor。 。。。more

Horrorstör has such a fascinating concept for its story, with characters who find themselves in a haunted IKEA。 The storyline was just alright though, nothing that really stood out as super scary (just weird, unfortunately) and characters who were unmemorable。 When things turned spooky I found myself pausing and thinking, ‘well that escalated quickly!’ Not giving up on Grady Hendrix just yet though, I’d like it read his book on a Southern book club fighting vampires and the such…

This book is just delightful and pretty terrifying in places。 A great semi-satire of horrorstories and flatpack furniture alike。

So far I have to say this is my favorite Grady Hendrix book to date! Couldnt put it down it was a great horror comedy。

Cool premise and presentation。 That's about it for the positives。 As for the negatives: flat characters, and a just-as-flat story。 It reads like YA and has humor on par with it。 Some pretty shallow and on the nose commentary on corporate exploitation that doesn't go past the very obvious consensus that corporate oppression of workers is not very cash money (or I guess technically it is but you get the point)。 The spooky ghost guy apparently likes to see people work mindlessly because it hardens Cool premise and presentation。 That's about it for the positives。 As for the negatives: flat characters, and a just-as-flat story。 It reads like YA and has humor on par with it。 Some pretty shallow and on the nose commentary on corporate exploitation that doesn't go past the very obvious consensus that corporate oppression of workers is not very cash money (or I guess technically it is but you get the point)。 The spooky ghost guy apparently likes to see people work mindlessly because it hardens the spirit or some such shit and some characters just disappear halfway through to try and service a cliff hanger finale which falls on its face when you realize that it's hard to give a hoot about the characters when they're just walking tropes。About as interesting as that time my parents stuck me in the Ikea daycare while they bought some Swedish furniture。 Two meatballs out of five。 。。。more

Another fun, creepy Grady Hendrix novel—this time set in an IKEA-like store built over a former prison。 The e-book was written really creatively with diagrams of the furniture and then later, diagrams of the prison’s “furniture”。 A bit too gruesome for me to love it, but I loved the main character Amy and the way the book ends。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I finished this book in three hours。 It was a fun, fast read but not too substantial。 I don't buy Any going back in the building to save people she doesn't even like, and I especially don't buy her going back to work at the new building to save coworkers who are most certainly dead。 I loved Hedrix's last book and was a little let down with this one。 It's implied in the PostScript that other Orsk's are haunted as well, so I guess it wasn't just the site being built over a haunted prison。 I finished this book in three hours。 It was a fun, fast read but not too substantial。 I don't buy Any going back in the building to save people she doesn't even like, and I especially don't buy her going back to work at the new building to save coworkers who are most certainly dead。 I loved Hedrix's last book and was a little let down with this one。 It's implied in the PostScript that other Orsk's are haunted as well, so I guess it wasn't just the site being built over a haunted prison。 。。。more

Unfortunately, this book just wasn't for me。 The problem is not the general idea; it's great。 Taking that big monster of a super-store and giving it a chilling past and a few unwanted inhabitants was an interesting approach and I think this was mostly due to the format of the book。 My mother actually did a double take at it a couple of times because it looks so much like an actual IKEA catalogue。 Even the inside is pretty fun, with the articles descriptions before each chapter。Problem is, it doesn't go anywhere。 The plot actually takes a long, long, LONG time to pick up, to the point I was starting to wonder if it was really a horror story。 Even when it does, it never gets that scary, and honestly I'm a huge baby and loses sleep over the tiniest noise in the house, so that says a lot about how frightening this novel actually was。 It just felt really simple and almost childish, in the sense that there's no depth to the horror that's written in the book, even with the backstory that's given。 It just feels shallow and cliché like, "ah, look! mold and rats and lights turning off on their own! boo, ghosts noises, scary!", if you know what I mean。 I think the backstory of the haunting could have been WAY more developped: instead the author just skimmed over it and reduced it to a couple of vague paragraphs and a cartoon-stock villain。Basically, the idea behind this book is great and I admire the originality, but the realization is rather poor。 Like I said, the little descriptions and drawings of the furniture at the beginning of each chapter was interesting, but it didn't serve any purpose until the climax of the story。 I kept reading them closely in hope to find a little eerie sentence hidden in their midst, but the transition between normal ads and horror ones was too abrupt to actually feel a chill slowly rising。 The frightening aspect of the settings could have been used to create a sense of an immense, cold hell-loop, and the beings haunting it could have been turned into something more ethereal and abstract, that could have perhaps conveyed more meaning and depth to the story。 In the same manner, the characters were one-dimensional and barely carried the story on their shoulders。 The ending was rushed and predictable, and felt unsatisfying in the end。So yes, this is not a bad book, in the sense that it's pretty original, but it just lacked too much substance for me to actually enjoy。 The second half of the story is more interesting and more dynamic, but I just felt like so much more could have been done to create a vivid, terrifying story。 It just felt like wasted potential and that's an awful feeling to get when reading a story, isn't it? 。。。more
