So, I'm still enjoying the series as a whole。 It's an easy, fast-paced read and the creative liberties Meyer's taken with the fairytales are clever and, for the most part, work in her favor。 The story's still a bit predictable though, and while I liked some of the fresh faces Scarlet brought along (mainly Thorne, for his comic value), the others were。。 not so great。 And don't even let me get started on the romance。 If we leave aside the fact that Wolf's, um, animalistic features, kind of make th So, I'm still enjoying the series as a whole。 It's an easy, fast-paced read and the creative liberties Meyer's taken with the fairytales are clever and, for the most part, work in her favor。 The story's still a bit predictable though, and while I liked some of the fresh faces Scarlet brought along (mainly Thorne, for his comic value), the others were。。 not so great。 And don't even let me get started on the romance。 If we leave aside the fact that Wolf's, um, animalistic features, kind of make the whole thing feel like a kink, they'd known each other for all of a week when the term 'mate' was thrown around。 Is that a wolf thing too, or。。? And I feel like there was a moment where Meyer could've turned it around, but instead, we got insta-forgiveness and a boring 'i knew you wouldn't hurt me' speech that did absolutely nothing to redeem Scarlet's poorly developed character, so talk about missed opportunities。 I still like whatever Kai and Cinder's got going on though (mutual forbidden pining and denial, that is) and Cinder's banter with Thorne was highly enjoyable, so I'm hoping for more of that in the next book, especially as Captain 'golden retriever energy', 'not a thought in that head of his' Thorne steps up as the male lead。 。。。more

*4。5-no offense to wolf, but if I saw this man in public, it is literally on sight。 no doubt abt it I will be jumping him。 cinder and kai must have so many injuries from carrying this series though

Ok so I really did like this book but I just didn’t like it as much as the first one。 I just wasn’t as interested in Scarlet and Wolf’s story, especially Wolf because he just didn’t have much of a personality in my opinion。 I did love seeing Cinder in this though because she rocks and I also loved seeing Kai!

i love when classic YA has the angsty betrayal moment, absolutely showstopping

I like Cinder, both the book and the character, much more than Scarlet。 The former is a subtly built up, genuine yet ambitious story, while this one is an action packed series of switching events。 (view spoiler)[I like Cinder as a person more: she's hardworking and realistic, while Scarlet is too impulsive, reckless, hot-tempered。 And when you think about her fiery personality, the rushed romance's not contrived at all。 But of course I like most about Kai and Cinder and how they're struggling to I like Cinder, both the book and the character, much more than Scarlet。 The former is a subtly built up, genuine yet ambitious story, while this one is an action packed series of switching events。 (view spoiler)[I like Cinder as a person more: she's hardworking and realistic, while Scarlet is too impulsive, reckless, hot-tempered。 And when you think about her fiery personality, the rushed romance's not contrived at all。 But of course I like most about Kai and Cinder and how they're struggling to make up their minds about each other! (view spoiler)[The last part of the book , and the way the author increases the death toll and violence, fight scenes is kind of shocking。 I've not really expected it to be so dark all of a sudden。 That's what knocks a star down from my rating。 But I can't stop now -- just have to know how it plays out (don't we all?) A spare thought: I wonder what torture loyal readers go through, the whole year waiting for the next book to come out! SO glad I'm reading this series late enough to skip the waiting days! I didn't quite devour the second installment like the first。 I think that's mostly because I wasn't as interested in Scarlet and her story as I was in Cinder's (I was always very eager for the next Cinder and Thorne section)。That's not to say Scarlet isn't a good character。 She's is prone to piques of emotion, hot-headed, impulsive, and ultimately loyal to a near fault。 Her tentative partnership (and very sudden romance) with Wolf wasn't bad, just not really my cup of tea。 (Wolf, as a character, I didn't quite devour the second installment like the first。 I think that's mostly because I wasn't as interested in Scarlet and her story as I was in Cinder's (I was always very eager for the next Cinder and Thorne section)。That's not to say Scarlet isn't a good character。 She's is prone to piques of emotion, hot-headed, impulsive, and ultimately loyal to a near fault。 Her tentative partnership (and very sudden romance) with Wolf wasn't bad, just not really my cup of tea。 (Wolf, as a character, as pretty interesting。 All the references to him being more animal than human where a nice touch)。Highlights:The plot: reading the two separate stories continue until they ultimately intertwine was very satsifying。The basement scene: Cinder and Thorne uncovering that basement was pretty chilling, great atmosphereThe theater scene: when Scarlet tells her grandma what she'd discovered and how that scene mirrors the original Red Riding Hood tale made me feel all kinds of empathy for Scarlet and delight in how Meyers reformed the fairy tale。 。。。more

I’ve heard such good things about this series, and I’ve finally seen why people praise it so much。 Cinder was fantastic, and Scarlet was no exception because I loved this book as well。 I really enjoy how the retelling isn’t fully wrapped up in its own book, and characters from previous books continue to be followed in later books。 There’s a ton of other reviews on the goodreads platform that more thoroughly explain what this series is about, so I’m not going to do that in my review。 I do have no I’ve heard such good things about this series, and I’ve finally seen why people praise it so much。 Cinder was fantastic, and Scarlet was no exception because I loved this book as well。 I really enjoy how the retelling isn’t fully wrapped up in its own book, and characters from previous books continue to be followed in later books。 There’s a ton of other reviews on the goodreads platform that more thoroughly explain what this series is about, so I’m not going to do that in my review。 I do have nothing but praise for this series so far though! 。。。more

Jennifer

I loved this book just like I loved Cinder。 I’m so glad the author picked up right where the story left off while also introducing some great new characters。 I also really like Scarlet and Wolf’s relationship, and I like how Cinder and Kai’s relationship is still there even though they’re separated - slow burn。

Don’t like the 2 main character at all。 The captain and wolf is okay ig。 The plot is getting more interesting which is good。
