Summary

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Richard Feynman: physicist 。 。 。 Nobel winner 。 。 。 bestselling author 。 。 。 safe-cracker。

In this substantial graphic novel biography, First Second presents the larger-than-life exploits of Nobel-winning quantum physicist, adventurer, musician, world-class raconteur, and one of the greatest minds of the twentieth century: Richard Feynman。 Written by nonfiction comics mainstay Jim Ottaviani and brilliantly illustrated by First Second author Leland Myrick, Feynman tells the story of the great man's life from his childhood in Long Island to his work on the Manhattan Project and the Challenger disaster。 Ottaviani tackles the bad with the good, leaving the reader delighted by Feynman's exuberant life and staggered at the loss humanity suffered with his death。

Anyone who ever wanted to know more about Richard P。 Feynman, quantum electrodynamics, the fine art of the bongo drums, the outrageously obscure nation of Tuva, or the development and popularization of the field of physics in the United States need look no further than this rich and joyful work。

Such a genius, such a wonderful oddball。

I didn’t understand any of the science stuff, but I liked going along with someone’s life。 It genuinely made me a little sad at the end :(

This graphic novel gives you an overview of Feynman's amazing life。 It's well illustrated but the storytelling keeps making u want for more 。。。Particularly since most scenes aren't completed but just summarized。 But overall if you want to know about Feynman's life。。。This is a good book to start with。 This graphic novel gives you an overview of Feynman's amazing life。 It's well illustrated but the storytelling keeps making u want for more 。。。Particularly since most scenes aren't completed but just summarized。 But overall if you want to know about Feynman's life。。。This is a good book to start with。 。。。more

My kids both love graphic novels/comics and one of them has some interest in physics (while headed towards an art college)。 So I had them read this, and I think it was a relatively successful introduction for Feynman。Certainly this is more of a human interest story than an introduction in Feynman's physics。 I do think in a world where so many people are desperate to speak truth to power, they omit the truth part (or just bypass thinking in general and speak away)。 So some of Feynman's fixations My kids both love graphic novels/comics and one of them has some interest in physics (while headed towards an art college)。 So I had them read this, and I think it was a relatively successful introduction for Feynman。Certainly this is more of a human interest story than an introduction in Feynman's physics。 I do think in a world where so many people are desperate to speak truth to power, they omit the truth part (or just bypass thinking in general and speak away)。 So some of Feynman's fixations on issues (and how he can operate within and admit to his limits。。。。while the rest of us have a lot more limitations in how we understand things), all of that was pretty refreshing。Pragmatic romance too was nicely depicted and not as an oxymoron。 In ways he was a new scientist and an old New Romantic, as sadly much of his amorous actions wound up with sad, and spooky distance。Now will either son watch the physics lectures with me (I'll need them to explain 'em pretty soon) 。。。more

I think every so often you should pick up a nonfiction book about a truly epic person。 Someone whose achievements are just kind of unreasonably excellent- I mean, maybe we can't begin to aspire to have such a life full of knowledge and discovery but reading about it sure is cool。Richard Feynman seems so cool。 I really want to read his books now。 At the end of the book they mention they had over a meter of evidence and stuff about Feynman for the book- Now that's epic。 I love it when we get to re I think every so often you should pick up a nonfiction book about a truly epic person。 Someone whose achievements are just kind of unreasonably excellent- I mean, maybe we can't begin to aspire to have such a life full of knowledge and discovery but reading about it sure is cool。Richard Feynman seems so cool。 I really want to read his books now。 At the end of the book they mention they had over a meter of evidence and stuff about Feynman for the book- Now that's epic。 I love it when we get to read something that's so beloved and researched by the creators。On to the actual book- What illustrations! I loved this art style so much and and am definitely gonna be trying to incorporate parts of it into my own drawings。 The art is also consistently good and stylistically really aesthetically pleasing。 The color palette is。。。 even science-y? It's really good。Overall a pretty good setup too- for a biography/science textbook of a graphic novel, it read really smoothly。 At some parts it got a little dense with page spreads and page spreads of electrons and such, but I literally can't complain because that's the source content。Lastly, I think I learned some good stuff about learning- or at least figuring it out。 There's a part where he figures out hydrogen theory or something。 He talks about how he just gives the idea little pokes。 I don't know why but- that's just really appealing imagery。 I like it。 。。。more

The Well-Read Investor

More fun than a typical biography, Richard Feynman’s quirky verve for life, as well as the highly complex physics he pioneered, are reflected well in this visually rich graphic novel。 Still, and despite the books’ length, we are left with a sense of two dimensional insight into this great thinker rather than a robust rendition of this unique mind。

I hadn't read a graphic novel in ages, and this book made me want to read more of them。 Feynman's life provides many entertaining stories and ideas worth contemplating。 The book manages to describe specific concepts and discoveries in physics in an accessible way and delves into why Feynman did a lot of the great work that he did。 This book strikes a balance between a breezy read and a historically and scientifically relevant bio of a brilliant man。 The illustrations were great as well。 Really e I hadn't read a graphic novel in ages, and this book made me want to read more of them。 Feynman's life provides many entertaining stories and ideas worth contemplating。 The book manages to describe specific concepts and discoveries in physics in an accessible way and delves into why Feynman did a lot of the great work that he did。 This book strikes a balance between a breezy read and a historically and scientifically relevant bio of a brilliant man。 The illustrations were great as well。 Really enjoyed reading this book。 。。。more

Fizikçi Feynman’ın hayatına bir bakış yaptığımız çizgi roman。 Nerede kimlerle neler yapmış öğrenmek güzeldi。 Özellikle ülke ülke gezmesi, kimsenin umursamadığı konularda çok iyi hale gelmesi ve o konulardan daha önemli noktalara sıçraması eğlenceli。

This was cute but a bit disjointed and kept jumping from one storyline to another, but not in an organized way (except somewhat chronologically)。 I am still a bit confused what Feynman got his Nobel prize for (but the point was made in this book that the science behind quantum electrodynamics is very very confusing and hard to explain)。 I don't like that he helped develop the atom bomb (but a point was also made in this book that he did what he thought was right at the time with the information This was cute but a bit disjointed and kept jumping from one storyline to another, but not in an organized way (except somewhat chronologically)。 I am still a bit confused what Feynman got his Nobel prize for (but the point was made in this book that the science behind quantum electrodynamics is very very confusing and hard to explain)。 I don't like that he helped develop the atom bomb (but a point was also made in this book that he did what he thought was right at the time with the information he had at the time, and feeling guilty about it later makes little sense, which makes sense to me)。 The funniest stories in this book I already knew (since my mom is a big fan of his and has already told me about his safe cracking, running through the Vatican), but his humor really came through。 I love that he had so much fun with science and wasn't afraid to do his own thing his own way。 。。。more

Loved the book。 I only disliked (or struggled with?) the structure of the story。。。 it jumps around in time with ineffective transitions which made me disoriented。 There are labeled boxes with a sort of heading and year, but the headings are ambiguous and the story's text and dialog never helps。 Loved the book。 I only disliked (or struggled with?) the structure of the story。。。 it jumps around in time with ineffective transitions which made me disoriented。 There are labeled boxes with a sort of heading and year, but the headings are ambiguous and the story's text and dialog never helps。 。。。more

It was a little confusing to get into at first, and I wish they'd included a more in-depth introduction explaining their methodology (the book is narrated in first-person but obviously not by Dr。 Feynman, who passed away in 1988)。 They've used a respectable amount of sources and it would've helped readers to know going in how they've collaged different sources together to make the biographical narrative。Overall I really enjoyed the book - it was my first introduction to Dr。 Feynman (I'd of cours It was a little confusing to get into at first, and I wish they'd included a more in-depth introduction explaining their methodology (the book is narrated in first-person but obviously not by Dr。 Feynman, who passed away in 1988)。 They've used a respectable amount of sources and it would've helped readers to know going in how they've collaged different sources together to make the biographical narrative。Overall I really enjoyed the book - it was my first introduction to Dr。 Feynman (I'd of course heard of him, which is why I read the book at all, but hadn't actually read or studied anything he's done)。 As a first foray, it was really cool to learn about his life in general and get a sense of how his life unfolded。 I don't know if it's entirely accurate because I have yet to read or watch his lectures/interviews/books so maybe this rating will change。The one thing I will say is that I didn't like how the nuclear bomb was handled in the book - I have the utmost respect for the man and his work but be warned that if you're expecting a hardcore philosophical grappling with the nuclear bomb and its ramifications you won't find it here。 That was off-putting to me while I was reading it and I don't know if it's because of how the author handled it or because that's how Dr。 Feynman actually was。 It was still really cool to read about his role in the Manhatten Project, and I was very emotionally affected by the panel of Bob Wilson, post-nuclear test, taken aback by the horror of what they'd made。 I was surprised that Oppenheimer's post-war position wasn't mentioned even once, but I don't know whether Dr。 Feynman was close to him post-war so that's not a knock against the book, just my own expectations。The section near the end fo the book where Dr。 Feynman explains QED, was super cool。 I am bad at physics (as my high school physics teacher would happily tell you) and I found it understandable。 I also like that it was clearly simplified a LOT but not so much so that it felt juvenile。 It took me a couple read-throughs of some panels but with some tender attention I'm sure a lot fo people could get a lot out of that brief illustrated physics lecture - a really cool feat for a graphic novel to accomplish。 。。。more

Feynman is certainly a lovable character, and sometimes it's hard to actually come to terms with the fact that he isn't fictional。 A man with a curious and humorous nature, and an amazing intelligence, who's personality you perceive develop as the novel goes by。 I found the theorical bits way too hard for me to understand, and the fact that they were in English, which is not my mother language, might've had to do something with it。 Feynman is certainly a lovable character, and sometimes it's hard to actually come to terms with the fact that he isn't fictional。 A man with a curious and humorous nature, and an amazing intelligence, who's personality you perceive develop as the novel goes by。 I found the theorical bits way too hard for me to understand, and the fact that they were in English, which is not my mother language, might've had to do something with it。 。。。more

This graphic novel biography is a lively depiction of the life of renown physicist Richard Feynman (1918-1988)。 Brilliant and full of abounding curiosity, Feynman worked on theories of quantum electrodynamics along with teaching physics in a captivating way to college students as a professor at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) in years 1950-1988。 Winner of a 1965 Nobel Prize in physics (in tandem with two other physicists), Feynman also was one of the scientists at Los Alamos in This graphic novel biography is a lively depiction of the life of renown physicist Richard Feynman (1918-1988)。 Brilliant and full of abounding curiosity, Feynman worked on theories of quantum electrodynamics along with teaching physics in a captivating way to college students as a professor at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) in years 1950-1988。 Winner of a 1965 Nobel Prize in physics (in tandem with two other physicists), Feynman also was one of the scientists at Los Alamos in the 1940s, working on the Manhattan Project, the making of the atomic bomb。This biography also includes Feynman's relationships with his wives and some insights into his immediate family, including his younger sister, Joan, who became an astrophysicist。 Considered an iconoclast among his research and academic peers, Feynman's unique approach to living life with zest and a sense of adventure is captured well in this biography。 Included are sections where Feynman, himself, is "teaching" various theories in physics as if you, the reader, is his student -- a novice at science and especially physics, I found this oddly compelling。 I've always believed that physics was way beyond my scope of know-how and yes, it still is。 Feynman's approach brings some of the basic concepts down to a basic level that tries to get the common person to possibly have some comprehension。 。。。more
