Summary

The kingdom of Hálendi is in trouble。 It's losing the war at its borders, and rumors of a new, deadlier threat on the horizon have surfaced。 Princess Jennesara knows her skills on the battlefield would make her an asset and wants to help, but her father has other plans。

As the second-born heir to the throne, Jenna lacks the firstborn's--her brother's--magical abilities, so the king promises her hand in marriage to the prince of neighboring Turia in exchange for resources Hálendi needs。 Jenna must leave behind everything she has ever known if she is to give her people a chance at peace。

Only, on the journey to reach her betrothed and new home, the royal caravan is ambushed, and Jenna realizes the rumors were wrong--the new threat is worse than anyone imagined。 Now Jenna must decide if revealing a dangerous secret is worth the cost before it's too late--for her and for her entire kingdom。

For fans of Sorcery of Thorns and Furyborn comes a thrilling new fantasy about a kingdom ravaged by war, and the princess who might be the key to saving not only those closest to her, but the kingdom itself, if she reveals the very secret that could destroy her。

Honestly this is such a banger。 The world building is well paced and strong, the characters (especially Jenna) are wonderfully fun to follow, and the world feels like one I’d like to explore。 Catch me reading the sequel later this summer。

Each chapter was as exciting as the last and I couldn't help but want more! We've all been victim to incredibly boring sections of novels that just drag and draaaaaag on。。。this book did not have that (okay there was that one part where she was stuck in a forest for a while。。。but don't worry it gets better。。。and at least the forest description was super cool 😂)! I am so excited for the sequel (eek!)the characters: im gonna be honest。。。。im writing this review a week after i finished the book and i have awful memory。。。。so uh i don't really remember my specific feelings on the characters 😅 what i CAN tell you is that they are most definitely wonderful characters (i would've written down notes if i disliked any of them, trust me on that)。 So theyre definitely not bad characters but I don't remember which specific things I liked about each of them, so ahh sorry! 😅romance: IT WAS FREAKING CUTE! ("uh loryn," you may be asking, "how do you know if the romance was cute when you literally just said you don't remember the characters very well"。。。my answer is because that i wrote a whole paragraph on how much i love the "we are betrothed but have never met before but we end up meeting under unlikely circumstances in a situation where we must keep our identities secret from one another, meanwhile we fall in love" trope。 if that doesnt sell it for you, the chemistry was IMPECCABLE and very flirtatious (ooh, ahh) and i loved it!setting: the way the author wrote setting description was immersive and wonderfully engaging! it made even the none-action scenes incredibly enticing! i could picture the setting perfectly in my head, every branch and flower to the smallest detail, and as someone who is NOT a fan of long boring setting passages。。。。the description in this book was。。。dare i say。。。fun to read :o) I honestly felt like I was experiencing the whole thing myself (that being said。。。this book would make a great movie)plot twist/betrayal: it was pretty predictable however i didn't bother me that much because i wasn't SUPER interested in finding out who had betrayed them (other aspects of this book were much more interesting to me)random thoughts: I LOVE ENZO's SISTERS SO MUCH! theyre definitely my favorites characters of this book and i adored every scene with them!anything i disliked? the other POV chapters (of the villians/un-known people) added a lot of mystery to the novel, however it was pretty confusing at the beginning。 it makes more sense later in the book but it was still kind of hard to piece together。 。。。more

This book was amazing。 I won’t sugar coat it but this book did have a very slow start but once it got good, it got good。I want enzos hand in marriage, that’s it。The banter between Ren and Jen is so cute。 Hey that rhymed!! The plot was a bit confusing but it all came together towards the end。 I cannot wait for untethered go read shielded right now if you haven’t!!

Fantasy Adventure (with Romance) at its best! This one was so much fun, I couldn't put it down and read it in one day。 Definitely a pleasant surprise。 Plenty of action and intrigue pretty much right off the bat made this one speed right along。 Plus cool magic (more so in the hands of the villains to start with, our heroes need some time to figure theirs out。。。), swoon-worthy romance, hidden identities, betrayals, and double crosses all made this a fast-paced perfectly rounded fantasy adventure f Fantasy Adventure (with Romance) at its best! Give this book a try! 。。。more

Have you ever read a book where the protagonist is trying to figure out what's going on, and the author shoves the answer in the readers' faces as well as the protagonist themselves? And then proceeds to literally write that the protagonist still has no idea why? And then the protagonist finally realizes the answer after several chapters in a supposedly surprising, ingenious "Aha!" moment? Yeah, this is one of those kinds of books。Not only does it make for frustrating reading for the readers, it Have you ever read a book where the protagonist is trying to figure out what's going on, and the author shoves the answer in the readers' faces as well as the protagonist themselves? And then proceeds to literally write that the protagonist still has no idea why? And then the protagonist finally realizes the answer after several chapters in a supposedly surprising, ingenious "Aha!" moment? Yeah, this is one of those kinds of books。Not only does it make for frustrating reading for the readers, it also comes across as juvenile。 The author seriously underestimates young adults。 This writing style may be okay for some 8-year-olds but clearly not high schoolers, alright? And such writing only makes the protagonist seem。。。not that bright。 ------------------notes while reading:1/4 of the book:can't believe our protagonist, princess Jennasara from Halendi, doesn't know the mages banished to the north are the ones attacking them right now。 It doesn't take a genius to figure it out? Who else would be there in those barren lands? She knows their north is under attack and knows only banished people are in the north (the Ice Deserts) and she's shocked when she's told they are the ones attacking。 I'm like "???"And she doesn't know that her country's purpose is to protect the southern native country of Turia who were there first。 (Since her ancestors brought magic onto the Plateau to be banished up north, her country of people who came overseas have the job to protect the rest of the Plateau = continent from the magic they brought)。 And yet, she has studied the history of the lands since childhood。 How can she miss such a crucial aspect of her country's history? Mind boggling。 The writing is too juvenile。2/3 into the book:I like her main love interest, Enzo, but their cute romance is absolutely ruined by 2 things:1。 She liked Cris from the first chapter, and it seemed that he also likes her。 They seem to have grown up together, with Cris being her brother's best friend, and Cris has been her sparring partner for years。 How can she fall in love with Enzo on first meeting????2。 Their cutesy romance is constantly interrupting the storytelling。 I'm finally getting the chance to read about the mysteries of this world being answered (like the evil mages' history, for example) and it's constantly being interrupted with "his eyes fell on my lips" and "my heart is fluttering" and I'm just like "can't you just stop interrupting the story please?!"And the most annoying thing: it's super important to figure out how to defeat the great old mages because they slaughter entire armies and infiltrate castles like they're invisible。 So shouldn't they be a top priority? So our protagonist goes and looks up about these mages in Turia's big library with lots of magic books to see what useful information there is to defeat them。 Everyone else doesn't know about mages still existing。 But instead of asking the steward librarian who has read everything on magic, she goes and reads that huge collection all by herself。 Her reasoning is that she doesn't know who to trust。 LOLLLLL, if the info you want to find is so secretive, then the dude who's read it already knows all about it so secret information shouldn't be the issue。 You just need to change the way you ask for the information。 I mean, he already knows you're reading up on magic and recommending you which books to read as well。 ARGHHH。And she forgets the whole thing about the hidden magic mage's library and the key as well as secret location, even though she herself brings it up several times。 Ask the librarian about the info on the mage's library, its key, or its location! And she and Enzo has to read the books on magic in their SPARE TIME!!! They have to put other priorities first, like being a guard, or attending balls。 While mages are trying to take over the world。 You've got to be kidding me。 If you're not going to ask the librarian steward for help, then spend every second of your life reading those books instead of dancing! It's so frustrating reading this book。 And reading every other paragraph about how Enzo gazes at her or how their shoulders accidentally touch and makes her heartbeat accelerate definitely does not help。And why does Turia have the biggest collection of books on magic, while Halendi the country that protects the rest of the Plateau from magic evil mages have only half a bookshelf on magic? And how can royalty of Halendi not know so much about the history of the land and magic if they are going to be the protectors of the land? This story just has too many issues。 Hopefully, they will make more sense later on in the series, but I don't have high hopes for that。Aside from that, Enzo is a great male lead, who saves those who robs him (our protagonist) and thinks of the people first。 So it kind of sucks that the storytelling isn't so great in this one。 Most of the writing is mediocre and it brings nothing new to this genre。 What makes it typical? Here's a list:- Jenna's mother died when she was young- Jenna's the special one who holds the opportunity to destroy the evil forces- Her super skilled mentor dies in front of her / protecting her / because of her- A good portion of the book is spent on her running away and surviving in the wild by herself- She almost dies and gets rescued by a peasant family (this one's seen too many times LOL)- the new character we're introduced to as a normal dude and she falls for after the 1st meeting is secretly a prince This story had a lot of potential, so the issues with this book make it disappointing to read。What I liked about it is how she's close with her brother。 Most books of this genre don't do a good job in showing close sibling bonds well。 。。。more
