Summary

Londyn, 2019。

Not great。 Took a lot to continue on。 Basic plot line, predictable and didn’t hold much believable evidence of attraction between main characters。 Most compelling character was the betrothed abductor。

Like what about the mother? The wedding? Caroline? Kit and the real reason of his death?Anyway, if there is another book, I’m not planning on reading it。 And if there isn’t。。。 thank God。 。。。more

I like many others read the 50 Shades Trilogy and I liked those books, so when I saw this one (I know its been released for a while, but I just got around to reading it) I thought I would give it a chance and for me。。。。I really couldn't get into this book。 I struggled with it, which surprised me。 I never like to leave a book unfinished but I had to give up half way through it。 I might end up going back to it so that it doesn't bug me that I've left a book unfinished。 But right now it not that ti I like many others read the 50 Shades Trilogy and I liked those books, so when I saw this one (I know its been released for a while, but I just got around to reading it) I thought I would give it a chance and for me。。。。I really couldn't get into this book。 I struggled with it, which surprised me。 I never like to leave a book unfinished but I had to give up half way through it。 I might end up going back to it so that it doesn't bug me that I've left a book unfinished。 But right now it not that time。 My rating may change once I've finished reading it, but we'll see。 。。。more

I started reading it because I was such a 50 shades fan。 In the beginning of the book I did come close to putting this down and not picking it back up because I just couldn't figure out where this book was heading。 (Full disclaimer, when I read this I hadn't gotten into the habit of reading the overview of books, so I really had no idea what I was getting into。) I did end up getting sucked into the story and couldn't get enough。 This was very well written, the story was vivid enough that I was a I started reading it because I was such a 50 shades fan。 In the beginning of the book I did come close to putting this down and not picking it back up because I just couldn't figure out where this book was heading。 (Full disclaimer, when I read this I hadn't gotten into the habit of reading the overview of books, so I really had no idea what I was getting into。) I did end up getting sucked into the story and couldn't get enough。 This was very well written, the story was vivid enough that I was able to visualize it and some of the scenes in my head were movie quality。 However, I'm still waiting for a sequel so I know what happens。 Don't leave us hanging forever。 Definite cliffhanger, so I can't say it has a HEA。 Dual point of view, and I love that。 。。。more

Okay。Also, disclaimer: I love romance, when it’s done well。 Two of my favourite books are Desert of the Heart and Call Me By Your Name。 I think there is a very important place in literature for romantic stories and even erotica, which I feel is unfairly maligned because it’s a predominantly female genre。 So if you think I’ll be judging this unfairly ‘cause of that, think again。 Romance is good, erotica is good。 I’ve written romance, in fact, so don’t think I am unfairly biased against this genre。 I’m not。So let’s begin。Chapter OneSo the book begins with the words “mindless sex”, which … alright。 I’m not particularly impressed by male characters who f**k everything in sight being paired with virginal, completely sexually-naive romantic interests (I don’t know if that’s the case here, but I have an inkling that it probably will be)。 I’m not saying there’s anything particularly wrong with it, it’s just, those two polarities are tired and overdone。 Let’s have a promiscuous female and a virginal male for once, ya know? Our protagonist muses about the many women he has bedded:“Who was it last time? Jojo? Jeanne? Jody? Whatever。 She was some nameless fuck who moaned a great deal both in and out of bed。”OK BUDDY。 We’re what – two sentences in? And already the male protagonist is rubbing me way the fuck wrong。 Sin #1: I’m not sure if he’s calling the woman a “fuck” meaning “an idiot” or meaning “a woman I slept with”。 If it’s the former, that just comes across as really mean-spirited and needlessly cruel。 Boo。 Boo on you。Sin #2: Describing the woman as a moaning harpie … how refreshing and totally not trite。 BOOOOOOO。“This is Caroline, for heaven’s sake, my best friend and my brother’s wife。 Ex-wife。No。 Not ex-wife。 His widow。”*Marge Simpson groaning noise* Alright, look – I’m not one of those people who get peeved if the protagonist is unlikeable。 I don’t feel it makes or breaks a book to have a character people would like to have a coffee with in real life … I mean, Catcher in the Rye is still a fantastic book despite people’s reservations about Holden Caulfield (btw, I don’t hate Holden Caulfield like so many others。 I think he’s adorable)。 But in romance books, I feel you kind of need to have a basic human respect for the characters if you’re going to be invested in the story。 That’s kind of the whole point。 And I am just STRUGGLING to get invested in this man; it’s not like E L is making it easy for me。 Who f*cks their brother’s widow? Why。 Just WHY。Moving on before I have an aneurysm。He bangs Caroline and it’s the next day。 She’s left a note on his pillow:“Dinner tonight with Daddy & the Stepsow?”I hate this book for making the term stepsow a thing。 I’m sorry, we’re only on page two and already the misogyny has leapt out like an unsightly foot wart。 I mean come on, the term “stepSOW” is LITERALLY dehumanizing。 It’s almost like E L James doesn’t particularly like women。The protagonist goes on about how he had always wanted to bang his brother’s wife, but he waited until his brother finally croaked to do the deed。 Charming。“It’s what I do best, fucking some eager, attractive woman into the small hours of the morning。 It’s my favourite recreational activity and gives me something to do-someone to do。”image“Caroline has just lost her husband。Shit。And I’ve lost my big brother, my only guiding light for the last few years。Shit。”OK, maybe it’s just me, but writing the word shit two times doesn’t seem like a good way to express a character’s grief and inner turmoil。 I’m not saying this author lacks the linguistic capacity to illustrate emotions but … she seems to do this a lot。 Her characters have these stupid exclamations in place of actual thoughts and musings – oh my! Gosh! Shit! Fuck! Gee! It’s just, I don’t know, lazy and off putting。The protagonist muses more about how his brother was so great and responsible and hardworking, while he is the black sheep of the family。 He is a trust fund baby who’s never had to work a day in his life。 Then he says he is the executor of Kit (the dead brother’s) will。 Okay。He keeps whining about how conflicted he is about Caroline – he wants her, but she’s his brother’s, but they were together before his brother married her, but he’s dead, but he wants her。 Whatever。 I can’t help but notice that he is “moaning a great deal in and out of bed”。“I remember that Krystyna, my ancient Polish daily, is due later this morning to clean。”So far women have been described as: nameless fucks, moaners, sows and now ancient。 All these pejoratives applied to the female sex and yet no male has been maligned in the slightest。 Hmm … odd, innit? He walks into a law firm to discuss the will。“‘Good afternoon, sir。” The young receptionist beams, a flush staining her olive skin。”Oh here we go。 Rehashing the idea from Fifty Shades that all you need to make your character seem charming is have women endlessly flush around him (something about the word “flush” is getting to be gross to me)。He talks about his title, Lord of Trevethick。 I know nothing about this since I’m not British, but the nice thing is the author stayed true to her origins this time and made a quintessentially British – rather than an American – story, with British characters。 That’s nice to see。Okay, I have to say this about the writing: it’s super choppy。 Like, look at this excerpt:“What was he thinking?Of course, she may challenge it。 And who would blame her?I rub my face。What am I going to do?My phone buzzes。WHERE ARE YOU?”I mean, this is like the world’s worst haiku。 It’s not pleasant to read and it doesn’t flow。 Do better, E。 L。He talks about finding someone else to bang …imageAnd maybe even scoring some blow。 I don’t appreciate the cavalier mention of drugs, but here we are。Suddenly he’s all over some girl named Heather, which is weird because I thought he was in the law office。 I have no idea what’s going on lol。 This fucking book。He bangs Heather and then says this:“My cock stirs at the memory”Honestly I feel like this is how women think men think。 I don’t know, I’m not a man, but I’m pretty sure they don’t personify their genitalia unless they’re being ironic。Then he remembers Caroline。“Three whining texts and several missed calls from Caroline have pissed me off”OK so recap。 Women are: nameless fucks, moaners, sows, ancient and whining。Men are: *Error 404: Insults Not Found*I really, REALLY didn’t intend for this to be a feminist critique, but come on。 I’m not even mad at E L, I’m just sad for her。 To be full of that much hatred for your fellow woman must just be awful。 Maybe this is my lesbianism speaking, but, shit, women are the best。Caroline texts him:“WHERE RU?CALL ME!*POUTING*”I don’t find grown women acting like children charming, but that’s just me。 Gross。Ugh, more choppy writing:“Coward。 The voice of my conscience whispers。 I need to put this right。 Above me the shimmers from the Thames bob and weave, free and easy。 Taunting me。 Reminding me of what I’ve lost。Freedom。And what I have now。Responsibility。Shit。””Why am I picturing this being read by a malfunctioning robot? Just compare this to the charming wit of Rhett Butler from Gone With the Wind, the way he kept Scarlet on her toes with his banter; James’ hero seems like a sputtering idiot in comparison。We find out that our hero can play the piano。 Is this just Christian Grey recycled? Don’t answer that, of course it is。He is also a DJ and a photographer and a model。 Why stop there? Why not make him a super genius, renaissance-style painter who is also a football hero and a wizard? I don’t know, I’m not impressed enough。“Kit’s pale, lifeless face surfaces in my imagination。Shit。”Once again, just writing the word shit instead of expressing actual emotions。 Tiring and lazy。“Fuck you, Kit。 Fuck you for dying。”I kind of like this sentence。 It expresses his mixed emotions quite concisely and nicely – he is angry at his brother, but he also misses him。 It’s direct and illustrates the point quite well。OK, so that’s chapter one。Impressions so far: I don’t like the writing。 The prose is choppy and bland, and the main character is at worst, uninteresting, and at best, a jackass。 And not a charming jackass like Dr。 House, but the kind of jackass whose eye you want to put salt in。 Just, blegh。Maybe it will get better, but as a reader, there’s nothing that’s drawing me in so far。 。。。more

Excellent book with an exceptional characters! It has a great story line full of passion and desire and at the same time engages with serious subject matter (male-female relationships in less developed parts of the world, sex trafficking, women rights, ups and downs on the road to self-discovery and becoming your own person)。 It is true that it leaves the reader breathless to the very last page! #Mindful。 Beautiful。 Fulfilling。 #MustReadBook

Was a little disappointed。 Found the story to be slow moving at points on which I skipped paragraphs at a time。I would continue to read the series as, even if I do not care to much for the story, I like to complete the story and at the end of the book the story was not complete。
