Summary

Eric is the Discworld's only demonology hacker。 The trouble is, he's not very good at it。 All he wants is the usual three wishes: to be immortal, rule the world and have the most beautiful woman fall madly in love with him。 The usual stuff。

But what he gets is Rincewind, the Disc's most incompetent wizard, and Rincewind's Luggage (the world's most dangerous travel accessory) into the bargain。

Terry Pratchett's hilarious take on the Faust legend stars many of the Discworld's most popular characters in an outrageous adventure that will leave Eric wishing once more - this time, quite fervently, that he'd never been born。

A short but sweet story about the further misadventures of one Rinsewind the wizard!

I was once gifted a Terry Pratchett book that I enjoyed quite a bit so I thought I'd dive into another。 But I found Eric to be pretty underwhelming - this is maybe more of an indication of personal preference than the writing itself, but I found I didn't really care about anything that was happening。Pratchett writes in a nice lighthearted comedic style, and that's pleasant for about 10 pages, but then gets a little dull。 I think I'd enjoy this as maybe a weekly newspaper column or something, but I was once gifted a Terry Pratchett book that I enjoyed quite a bit so I thought I'd dive into another。 But I found Eric to be pretty underwhelming - this is maybe more of an indication of personal preference than the writing itself, but I found I didn't really care about anything that was happening。Pratchett writes in a nice lighthearted comedic style, and that's pleasant for about 10 pages, but then gets a little dull。 I think I'd enjoy this as maybe a weekly newspaper column or something, but it felt a bit much for a whole novel。 It was low stakes all the way, and the jokes got a little repetitive。 Also, perhaps I started with the wrong book because it felt like there were a lot of 'inside jokes' that I wasn't a party to。 。。。more

Short and enjoyableWhile I think this is far from His best work, Terry has never the less managed to perfectly capture certain aspects and traits of teenagers and there are some very funny moments。

I enjoyed this book Eric was a very interesting character and Rincewind his usual chaotic self。 There was an unusual portrayal of Hell which all made the book more enjoyable and I will look forward to the further pursuance of Rincewind's adventures in the next books in that series。 I enjoyed this book Eric was a very interesting character and Rincewind his usual chaotic self。 There was an unusual portrayal of Hell which all made the book more enjoyable and I will look forward to the further pursuance of Rincewind's adventures in the next books in that series。 。。。more

Even the weakest Discworld is a great Discworld。

Another odd, not exactly memorable entry in Discworld。 This one involves Rincewind, again, and his books tend to be more tedious。 This is also one long chapter, as far as I can tell。 The first half of the book/chapter is vaguely confusing; the second half moves more quickly and wrap things up。 Fortunately, it's a short book。 Entertaining, zany, full of the usual Pratchett language mastery, but not among my favorites。 Another odd, not exactly memorable entry in Discworld。 This one involves Rincewind, again, and his books tend to be more tedious。 This is also one long chapter, as far as I can tell。 The first half of the book/chapter is vaguely confusing; the second half moves more quickly and wrap things up。 Fortunately, it's a short book。 Entertaining, zany, full of the usual Pratchett language mastery, but not among my favorites。 。。。more

Discworld episodes featuring Rincewind are always lots of fun! Spotty incel teenager conjures up a demon。。。er, Rincewind, and hopes to fulfill his wildest wet dreams。 Doesn't work out quite like that, even with Rincewind and the luggage trying their best to set the lad straight。For me, this is 17th out of 41。。。 so lots more episodes to go! Hell。。。。。I was really excited to realize that this was the 1st book in my endeavor to read the entire series that I have not read before。 Is it tells us in the end that we all have to end up somewhere and it's not always someplace nice, but sometimes。 In this book we have to see the return of one of my favorite characters throughout the series。 I like that we get a because perspective on to some of the history of the Discworld and the universe。 The newest characters in this one are actually a lo Hell。。。。。I was really excited to realize that this was the 1st book in my endeavor to read the entire series that I have not read before。 Is it tells us in the end that we all have to end up somewhere and it's not always someplace nice, but sometimes。 In this book we have to see the return of one of my favorite characters throughout the series。 I like that we get a because perspective on to some of the history of the Discworld and the universe。 The newest characters in this one are actually a lot of fun and in one case so much feathered。 。。。more

This was good。 It might be the book with the best Rincewind moments and quotes。 At least the moments and quotes I remember and left an impression。 Since the story is short and quick it does not drag。 It does end rather abruptly and jarringly。 Give it just 4。5 stars rounded up。

4 stars。 This book was quite funny, especially in the excellent first half, where the characters played off each other very well in amusing situations。 The second half was less funny, particularly when the characters were in hell, but it was still decent。 Overall, the plot felt pretty random, but the writing was so engaging it didn’t matter。

Classic Discworld and classic Rincewind, need I say more? This is definitely a solid entry in the series, but I wouldn't recommend it as an intro to the series。 Rincewind can come off as abrasive and somewhat unlikeable (if you were him, you'd be grumpy too), but once you learn to love him, especially when read in his chronological order, Eric serves as a hilarious and thoughtful tome。 The humour is amazing and hilarious, but nothing absolutely astounding other than (view spoiler)[ the stuff tha Classic Discworld and classic Rincewind, need I say more?

(review in English follows)Ano, tohle přesně jsem si slibovala, že dostanu, když jsem se rozhodla přečíst si další knihu od T。 Pratchetta。 Toužila jsem po česky psané (byť přeložené, já vím), hbité, nápadité a ne moc dlouhé knize (unavená četbou té předchozí, úžasné, ale náročné včetně složité angličtiny)。 Bylo by divné, kdyby se Pratchett nechopil takového tématu jako je Faust。 Čtu Zeměplochu podle témat a postav, ne postupně, a zkrátka mě zajímalo, co se stalo s Mrakoplašem po Magickém prazdro (review in English follows)Ano, tohle přesně jsem si slibovala, že dostanu, když jsem se rozhodla přečíst si další knihu od T。 Pratchetta。 Toužila jsem po česky psané (byť přeložené, já vím), hbité, nápadité a ne moc dlouhé knize (unavená četbou té předchozí, úžasné, ale náročné včetně složité angličtiny)。 Bylo by divné, kdyby se Pratchett nechopil takového tématu jako je Faust。 Čtu Zeměplochu podle témat a postav, ne postupně, a zkrátka mě zajímalo, co se stalo s Mrakoplašem po Magickém prazdroji。 Kromě typických nápadů a postav, průletu historií Mayů, Trójanů a nápadu použít nudu jako nejvyšší formu pekelného mučení mě potěšila postava Stvořitele a myšlenka, že tam někde na začátku figuruje jeden nepovedený obložený chlebíček。Oh yes, I had hoped to get exactly this kind of book when deciding to read another part of the Discworld series。 I wanted something imaginative, well written, witty - and in Czech (having been tired by reading the previous book by Mr。 Warner- ingenious, but difficult to read not only due to the story itself, but also to the language used)。 Mr。 Kantůrek´s translation of the Mr。 Pratchett´s great original has given me just that。 The Faust theme really did not surprised me - it would have been strange if Mr。 Pratchett had passed such a great opportunity。 As I have said before somewhere, I do not read the Discworld in the order it was written, but rather choose the themes (Death, the witches, the University etc。)。 So I have started to read this particular story simply because I was really curious about the Rincewind´s fate after the Sourcery。 This book is quite short, it is a little uneven in places as if the author did not know how to put all the ideas in one place at once。 Nevertheless, as well as whirling past the history of Mayans, visiting the Troy War and using the boredom as a highest form of torture in hell I really liked the character of the Creator and the idea that somewhere at the beginning of it all there was one somewhat unappealing sandwich。。 。。。more

I always enjoy a good Discworld novel, this one was super fun but left me wanting more for the plot。 Of course, Terry Pratchett always has great social commentary and manages to make me laugh even with some of the more complex philosophical questions。 In this novel we have Rincewind be involved in some time traveling with a teenager who likes to summon demons who can grant him wishes。 Of course, most of the book is spent running away from things and simply trying to get back to some kind of "nor I always enjoy a good Discworld novel, this one was super fun but left me wanting more for the plot。 Of course, Terry Pratchett always has great social commentary and manages to make me laugh even with some of the more complex philosophical questions。 In this novel we have Rincewind be involved in some time traveling with a teenager who likes to summon demons who can grant him wishes。 Of course, most of the book is spent running away from things and simply trying to get back to some kind of "normal" place (tough luck there!)。 I definitely recommend it as a great escape from our current reality。 The ending left me wanting more of a conclusion but I'm sure Rincewind will have more trouble ahead in the next book to keep me entertained。 。。。more

A surprisingly good Discworld read。 I say 'surprisingly', even though I have liked all the Discworld books I have read so far, because I had heard a lot of negativity about this one。 Maybe because of that, I had lower expectations and was pleased to see them exceeded, but, regardless, I really enjoyed Eric。 The plot, a subversion of Faust (three wishes, deals with the devil), is well done and, perversely, I liked the fact that the book just peters out at the end。 It might sound counter-intuitive A surprisingly good Discworld read。 I say 'surprisingly', even though I have liked all the Discworld books I have read so far, because I had heard a lot of negativity about this one。 Maybe because of that, I had lower expectations and was pleased to see them exceeded, but, regardless, I really enjoyed Eric。 The plot, a subversion of Faust (three wishes, deals with the devil), is well done and, perversely, I liked the fact that the book just peters out at the end。 It might sound counter-intuitive, but its understated that'll-do-for-now vibe makes a change from the magical extravaganzas of Discworld adventures past。Furthermore, Eric's other running jokes have legs; the ironic re-framing of the Trojan War (or, rather, its Discworld equivalent) was very funny and the quietly-building Fountain of Youth joke has a good pay-off。 Most enjoyable of all was the re-casting of Hell (the literal Hell) as a place of boredom and human resources and progress reports and business-speak rather than fire-and-brimstone, stabbed-with-pitchforks torture。 Just take, as an example, the subversion of the myth of Sisyphus, who Rincewind and Eric encounter whilst trying to escape Hell:"At the bottom of the hill there was a round rock。 Beside the rock sat a manacled man, his despairing head buried in his hands。 A squat green demon stood beside him, almost buckling under the weight of an enormous book。"I've heard of this one," said Eric。 "Man who went and defied the gods or something。 Got to keep pushing that rock up the hill even though it rolls back all the time –"The demon looked up。"But first," it trilled, "he must listen to the Unhealthy and Unsafety Regulations governing the Lifting and Moving of Large Objects。" (pp132-3)I like Rincewind; the sort of adventures he is likely to get mixed up in are perfect for Pratchett's style and worldview。 And, in defiance of the aggregate of reviews, I really liked Eric。 Perhaps it's because I just like dipping into the books from time to time, as opposed to being a Discworld aficionado。 And Eric, the shortest book yet, cannot outstay its welcome as Discworld books, with their unrelenting zany inventiveness and meandering plots, sometimes can。 It's just a short, sharp dose of what I like about Pratchett: endearing silliness, boundless inventiveness and cleverness whilst wearing its learning lightly。 。。。more
