Summary

Everyone likes Humaira "Hani" Khan—she’s easy going and one of the most popular girls at school。 But when she comes out to her friends as bisexual, they invalidate her identity, saying she can’t be bi if she’s only dated guys。 Panicked, Hani blurts out that she’s in a relationship…with a girl her friends absolutely hate—Ishita "Ishu" Dey。 Ishu is the complete opposite of Hani。 She’s an academic overachiever who hopes that becoming head girl will set her on the right track for college。 But Ishita agrees to help Hani, if Hani will help her become more popular so that she stands a chance of being elected head girl。

Despite their mutually beneficial pact, they start developing real feelings for each other。 But relationships are complicated, and some people will do anything to stop two Bengali girls from achieving happily ever after。

I really enjoyed all the conversations brought up in this book - the rampant biphobia, racism, prejudice of the school, how can we (not) measure up to our parents' expectations。 Still, it seemed more about two coming of age stories than a romance, thus the little disappointment。 I really enjoyed all the conversations brought up in this book - the rampant biphobia, racism, prejudice of the school, how can we (not) measure up to our parents' expectations。 Still, it seemed more about two coming of age stories than a romance, thus the little disappointment。 。。。more

5/5Gosh, this book。 I cried, I laughed, I rooted for the character's growth throughout the entire book。 Adiba Jaigirdar writing is absolutely beautiful and very believable for the character's ages。 I felt like every character had a purpose, even the minor ones。 If there is ever more to Hani and Ishu's life, I would buy it up in a heartbeat! What a wonderful sapphic story! I loved this bi rep so much and something I wish was there when I was a teenager。 5/5Gosh, this book。 I cried, I laughed, I rooted for the character's growth throughout the entire book。 Adiba Jaigirdar writing is absolutely beautiful and very believable for the character's ages。 I felt like every character had a purpose, even the minor ones。 If there is ever more to Hani and Ishu's life, I would buy it up in a heartbeat!

5⭐️It would have been easy to disappoint me in this book, because my expectations were incredibly high - for a story based around two Bengali girls in Ireland and a fake dating trope。。。it somehow exceeded these expectations。The writing style enabled me to connect with their characters, with the things we related on - and the things I was taught about the struggles of being women of colour in a predominantly white society。The romance。。。well built up? Adorable? Slow burn but not boring? A great book about acceptance and discovering who you are。 It's about struggling to be accepted by your friends due to your religion and sexuality。 Its about about family wanting the best for you but not always listening to what you want。 It's about self discovery。 It's about love。I feel this is a must read。 Perfect read for Pride Month 🌈🏳️‍🌈 A great book about acceptance and discovering who you are。 It's about struggling to be accepted by your friends due to your religion and sexuality。 Its about about family wanting the best for you but not always listening to what you want。 It's about self discovery。 It's about love。I feel this is a must read。 Perfect read for Pride Month 🌈🏳️‍🌈 。。。more

This was an enjoyable, if frustrating, read。Ishu is super smart and driven to succeed in school and make her parents proud of her academic achievements。 Hani is a popular girl who is friendly with everyone。I really liked Ishu。 She was funny and relatable and her narration made me laugh out loud at points。 I also really liked her sister, Nik。 I'm an only child, but if I had a sister I'd want her to be like Nik。 Her parents left a lot to be desired, and the book ended rather abruptly, so I don't k This was an enjoyable, if frustrating, read。Ishu is super smart and driven to succeed in school and make her parents proud of her academic achievements。 Hani is a popular girl who is friendly with everyone。I really liked Ishu。 She was funny and relatable and her narration made me laugh out loud at points。 I also really liked her sister, Nik。 I'm an only child, but if I had a sister I'd want her to be like Nik。 Her parents left a lot to be desired, and the book ended rather abruptly, so I don't know how things played out with them。Hani I didn't relate to at all, and was the source of my frustration。 She was fine in and of herself; it was her relationships with her friends that irritated me。 Aisling and Dee were horrible to her, she even acknowledged they were horrible, yet she continued to hang out with them。 I genuinely don't understand why。 If my friends did what they did I'd wave goodbye to them。 This toxic friendship continued throughout the book and really lessened my enjoyment of Hani's chapters。The whole cheating storyline made zero sense too。 Why on earth would Aisling, a student failing her classes, accuse Ishu, top achiever in the school, of cheating off her? What was she hoping to achieve? The fact that she faced no consequences was also not really believable。 I also didn't like that Hani didn't see through this straight away and take Ishu's side。 It was really frustrating。 Another little thing was the book is set in Ireland yet the characters sometimes said mom。 It was small, but jarring。The Bengali and muslim rep was great, and I enjoyed learning more about the culture。3。5 stars。 。。。more

This is the brown girl rep that I was looking for!I personally love opposites attract and fake dating trope and this book did it in such a good way。Humaira is a sweet, bubbly, friendly girl and Ishita is。。not any of that。 She is direct, practical and a no-nonsense girl。 Other girls at their school expect them to be friends cz "they both are brown"。 In reality, these two cannot be more different than each other。 But crazy expectations from friends and family push them to get into a fake relations This is the brown girl rep that I was looking for!I personally love opposites attract and fake dating trope and this book did it in such a good way。Humaira is a sweet, bubbly, friendly girl and Ishita is。。not any of that。 She is direct, practical and a no-nonsense girl。 Other girls at their school expect them to be friends cz "they both are brown"。 In reality, these two cannot be more different than each other。 But crazy expectations from friends and family push them to get into a fake relationship。 And thats where the fun and sweetness and craziness begins! Hani and Ishu are so precious, I feel like wrapping them up in cotton candy and protecting them forever! (I personally love Ishita more)。We not only see the friendship, and in time, love, blossom between Hani and Ishu, but we also get to see the realities of many relationships。 We see the stressful expectations of Ishu's family and the heartwarming love of Hani's family and the bitterness caused due to prejudices amongst friends。While this book highlights many important topics, the one that affected me the most the message that we should never feel ashamed for standing up for ourselves。 Hani and Ishu both have to face social ostracization on many occasions for no fault of their own。 They are singled out and even directly ridiculed at times for their skin colour, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation。 Its not selfish to speak up against racism and stereotypes, and the author has made this point very nicely in this story。 If someone is repeatedly being unsupportive and forcing you to be/do something you don't want to, then its ok to voice your opinion and state your boundaries。 It's ok to distance ourselves from toxic people in our life。There are in-depth conversations about the various issues faced by immigrants and these discussions were so touching。The author has given clear content warnings in the foreword and I was so impressed by that。 I haven't seen many authors do that and I really appreciated it。On a lighter note, there were references to bollywood in the book and that made desi self so happy! All in all, this is a must read book。 。。。more

This book was phenomenal! This was the first time I’d ever read a book with the Fake Dating trope and I loved it so much more than I had expected and think I definitely want to read more of that trope in the future。 There was also a slight hint of enemies to lovers (my favourite trope) so that made me very happy。 I loved both Hani and Ishu so much and their relationship was so cute and I loved reading about it。 As a bisexual girl myself, reading about Hani’s “friends” being biphobic made me even This book was phenomenal! This is such a cute little wholesome story。 I've never read a YA based around bisexuality and culture, it was so fascinating and gave me a lot of food for thought。 It was also really fun to read about Hani and Ishu walking around Dublin and to actually know the places mentioned in the book。 I'm excited to read more works by this author! I loved these characters so incredibly much!! Such an amazing book, and I highly recommend。 Besides, who doesn’t love a good fake dating trope?

I was expecting this one to be cute, but the romance was overshadowed by the friendship drama。 This made the book realistic in some very heart breaking ways。 I think members of the LGBTQ+ community are always scared that we'd lose friends or family members when we come out, and so this one touched a nerve that I was not expecting。 I was expecting this one to be cute, but the romance was overshadowed by the friendship drama。 This made the book realistic in some very heart breaking ways。 I think members of the LGBTQ+ community are always scared that we'd lose friends or family members when we come out, and so this one touched a nerve that I was not expecting。 。。。more

*3。5 stars* Definitely not my favourite romance of all time, but it was still really cute and I always love the fake dating trope。 There were several times I wanted to throw this book across the room but that is simply because it deals with racism and homophobia which just makes me angry always, nothing to do with how the actual book was written。 I still think it’s really important however, that books include these issues and educate people。 It was also lovely getting to see parts of the Bengali *3。5 stars* Definitely not my favourite romance of all time, but it was still really cute and I always love the fake dating trope。 There were several times I wanted to throw this book across the room but that is simply because it deals with racism and homophobia which just makes me angry always, nothing to do with how the actual book was written。 I still think it’s really important however, that books include these issues and educate people。 It was also lovely getting to see parts of the Bengali culture I haven’t seen before and educating myself, it was beautiful。 。。。more

This is is a very sweet YA book。 Both Hani and Ishu were strong leads for the book。 I enjoyed reading about Hani’s connections with her religion and learning about different cultural aspects of Bangladeshi culture through both of them。 Some of the side characters fell flat for me but Ishu and her sister was probably my favorite relationship to read about。 Would definitely recommend for those that love contemporary YA books。 This book has made me excited for more books (as if Henna Wars didn’t do This is is a very sweet YA book。 Both Hani and Ishu were strong leads for the book。 I enjoyed reading about Hani’s connections with her religion and learning about different cultural aspects of Bangladeshi culture through both of them。 Some of the side characters fell flat for me but Ishu and her sister was probably my favorite relationship to read about。 Would definitely recommend for those that love contemporary YA books。 This book has made me excited for more books (as if Henna Wars didn’t do it all ready) by Adiba Jaigirdar in the future。 。。。more

I’d like to preface this by saying I’ve become obsessed with the fake-dating trope。 This book was a work of art, truly。 NOW:I’m really bad at strategically reviewing books because it’s so hard for me to dislike or hate a book。 This novel, however, was one that I only recently heard about and decided to go into it without knowing too much about it。 I loved this book so much, and I’m really glad the thing that I thought was gonna happen didn’t happen and the main characters are so likeable and ver I’d like to preface this by saying I’ve become obsessed with the fake-dating trope。 This book was a work of art, truly。 NOW:I’m really bad at strategically reviewing books because it’s so hard for me to dislike or hate a book。 This novel, however, was one that I only recently heard about and decided to go into it without knowing too much about it。 I loved this book so much, and I’m really glad the thing that I thought was gonna happen didn’t happen and the main characters are so likeable and very relatable。 If you’re looking for an amazing lgbtq+ book please read this one-it’s so worth it。 I’ll definitely reread this book。 。。。more

Okay, so。。 for starters, I'm not the type of person that writes full reviews, it's usually "omg I love this book!" and then I go beg my friends to read it。 With "Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating' I feel like it might fall under this category, but I promise to try my best, as I liked this book。 So, I started to read this book in the most unpretentious way possible, I knew it was wlw and it had bisexual representation, and that was all, really, I was like "oooh a sapphic book, cool!" and decid Okay, so。。 for starters, I'm not the type of person that writes full reviews, it's usually "omg I love this book!" and then I go beg my friends to read it。 With "Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating' I feel like it might fall under this category, but I promise to try my best, as I liked this book。 So, I started to read this book in the most unpretentious way possible, I knew it was wlw and it had bisexual representation, and that was all, really, I was like "oooh a sapphic book, cool!" and decided to read on Pride Month。 I didn't think I would read the book in 3 days, you know? But I did, because it was really good。 Hani an Ishu are both strong characters, they feel very realistc and also very distinct from one another。 Hani is very popular, she's the kind that will try to conciliate everything in her life, she tries to ignore things that bother her because she doesn't want to make people mad at her, she also values a lot her religion and it was really interesting and inspiring as I'm not very religious。 On the other side, Ishu is more introverted and focused on her studies (I related a lot with her trying her best to make their parents proud but also being conflicted about what she wants for herself) and she also doesn't care at all for peoples opinions。 The only thing they seem to have in common (at the very beginnning) is their culture, they are both bengali, and it's something very important during the book, but what really brings them together is their goals, they just need to make the fake dating thing work。 I'm not a big fan of fake dating, the whole angst of people finding out really makes me pass it most of the times, but it didn't in this one (for reasons I wont talk about because I don't want to spoil it)。 I feel like, this book seems very realistic and warm, the story and it's characters are captivating, you can feel their emotions as you're reading the book and all the time you're chearing for Hani and Ishu to confess that they actually like eachother。 I do like how the conflicts (because a book always has one of these) were solved because honestly they are teenagers, and you will find a lot of really valid emotions on both Hani and Ishu's side。 I know it is kinda cliché but I also feel like, it's what it needs to be, us queer people, we need this kind of stories。 (view spoiler)[ Now I want to talk about two things that really made me enjoy this book, and they are connected to me as a person, it is very personal and I really want to thank the author for。 First of all, Ishu not coming out to her parents and still having her happy ending, it was realistic and made me feel really validated as I'm out to my friends but not to my family。 The second thing was Hani and her relationship with her family, it's just so good to see parents supporting their child and being respectful of their sexuality, it's something i wish for me and all other LGBTQIA+ people。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more
