Summary

Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river。 But the corrupted wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life。

Her people rely on the cold, ambitious wizard, known only as the Dragon, to keep the wood's powers at bay。 But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman must be handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as being lost to the wood。

The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid。 She knows - everyone knows - that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia - all the things Agnieszka isn't - and her dearest friend in the world。 And there is no way to save her。

But no one can predict how or why the Dragon chooses a girl。 And when he comes, it is not Kasia he will take with him。

From the author of the Temeraire series comes this hugely imaginative, engrossing and vivid fantasy novel, inspired by folk and fairy tales。 It is perfect reading for fans of Robin Hobb and Trudi Canavan。

A well executed fantasy novel that is basically an interpretation of a fairy tale written into a novel。 I like that idea and it made a good and entertaining book。 Except it feels like the story would work even better as a short fairy tale and it felt a bit dragged out at times in a form of a novel。

I like not enough fantasy/fairy-tale genre/style to want to read it。I do find a few gems reading the genre from time to time, like Chime, A Curse Dark as Gold, Sorcery & Cecelia: or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot, Keturah and Lord Death, Ella Enchanted, Enchanted (and of course the classics like 'Harry Potter', 'Winnie the Pooh', 'Alice in Wonderland', 'The Little Prince')。But I rather don't appreciate created fantasy world。 Perhaps I am too old, or just simply it is not my cup of tea。 For me, magi I like not enough fantasy/fairy-tale genre/style to want to read it。I do find a few gems reading the genre from time to time, like Chime, A Curse Dark as Gold, Sorcery & Cecelia: or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot, Keturah and Lord Death, Ella Enchanted, Enchanted (and of course the classics like 'Harry Potter', 'Winnie the Pooh', 'Alice in Wonderland', 'The Little Prince')。But I rather don't appreciate created fantasy world。 Perhaps I am too old, or just simply it is not my cup of tea。 For me, magic is a kind of metaphor or just something to add a bit of spark/flavor。 When I have to understand how the whole world works, or about their politics, etc。, I often lose interest。 And such was with this book。I started to like the Dragon - it was hard not to like the character。 I can see also that Naomi Novik had something to tell - I am just not in the mood to go through the whole book to find out what it was。 Perhaps another time。 。。。more

This was excellent, very good in lots of ways, at portraying women, at portraying being a peasant in a medieval society, a feeling of place, and (presumably) hommage to a specific culture。 I loved a lot of this and somehow kept putting it down and not picking it up again。 No fault of its own, just my own personal quirks that I found this a lot grimmer, darker, more full of gory battle scenes than what I was in the mood for (usually am, the older I get the more bored I am by long long battle scen This was excellent, very good in lots of ways, at portraying women, at portraying being a peasant in a medieval society, a feeling of place, and (presumably) hommage to a specific culture。 I loved a lot of this and somehow kept putting it down and not picking it up again。 No fault of its own, just my own personal quirks that I found this a lot grimmer, darker, more full of gory battle scenes than what I was in the mood for (usually am, the older I get the more bored I am by long long battle scenes)。 Still very worth it, just my own personal quirk。 。。。more

MS Novik needs a good editor, or it could be as a former software engineer I exhibit "obsessive-compulsive behavior"。 I do not consider it a “disorder”。 None the less there were too many simple errors that were missed。I also believed it to be too long。 The story was interesting but repetitive。 MS Novik needs a good editor, or it could be as a former software engineer I exhibit "obsessive-compulsive behavior"。 I do not consider it a “disorder”。 None the less there were too many simple errors that were missed。I also believed it to be too long。 The story was interesting but repetitive。 。。。more

Who she feels fondly towards????? There was also a line in the book that likened her descendants to being "tea diluted with milk" which felt icky to me。 All of this coming from a white author just really felt uncomfortable to me, in a way that made me knock the rating down a couple stars。Con: I had issues with the "villain"。 Initially the premise of the villain being an unconscious, primordial entity like "the Woods" was super compelling。 But the reveal of who the root villain was was just really underwhelming in comparison。 Like, we're really going for a "woman scorned" as the big bad? Really?? Like, yeah that's accurate for fairytales, but I was expecting a writer as skilled as Novik to subvert it somehow, but I guess not lmao。Con: Following on from the last point, the ending wrapped up was too quickly, and with too much of a lack of clarity for my taste。 For such a threatening and destructive battle, for the resolution to be the way it was felt really underwhelming。Pro: Kasia was iconic and I love her。 She honestly carried the second half of the book on her broad wooden shoulders and she did not get the flowers she deserved。 That's all。Overall, would I recommend this book? Even after writing this novel of a review, I honestly don't know。 Weigh up the pros and cons for yourself lmao I'm not your mum, do what you want xx 。。。more

Wow。 The Polish/Russian mythology is gorgeous here。 The writing is vivid and alive。 The world is tangible。 The characters are loveable, and the relationships, especially between Kasia and Nieshka, are lovely。 The Wood is perfectly horrifying, and the ending is totally justified and perfect。 A couple of chapters were pretty violent, mostly creature-on-human, though there is a bloody war near the end。 I wish the graphic violence had been dialed back some, but that's my biggest complaint。 Definitel Wow。 The Polish/Russian mythology is gorgeous here。 The writing is vivid and alive。 The world is tangible。 The characters are loveable, and the relationships, especially between Kasia and Nieshka, are lovely。 The Wood is perfectly horrifying, and the ending is totally justified and perfect。 A couple of chapters were pretty violent, mostly creature-on-human, though there is a bloody war near the end。 I wish the graphic violence had been dialed back some, but that's my biggest complaint。 Definitely belongs in the adult section at the library! Two obnoxious, unecessary sex scenes, one decently mild, one I had to skip two pages completely for。 The main character is a bit Mary Sue, but really likeable, so I didn't mind the trope the vast majority of the time。 Sometimes she was just a bit too powerful with no real explanation as to why。 Calm down, sis。I also wish the Dragon hadn't been so verbally abusive before all the romance starts。 Not okay。 Grow as a human first, THEN get the girl, not the other way around。 Altogether, though, I devoured this novel。 I love Russian folklore, so this was right up my alley。 What a ride! 。。。more

No, he was still cool and stiff up to the very end (not that strict but he's still who he was before) which I totally LOVED。The characters are very lovable and their personality is not overly blown up so it still feels closer to reality。 Even the villain in this story is very likable, which is actually a first for me。 (view spoiler)[The Wood Queen for me actually relates a bit to the world we currently live in and that's what makes it lovable。 It's always not pretty and easy, sometimes we've just got to release that inner demon, and damn everyone, lolz。 🤣 (hide spoiler)]All in all, the originality and creativity of the story, the well-thought-out characters, and the surprising twists and turns made this novel a five-star for me。 It's now on top of my list of books to reread again and again。Lastly, I just really don't know how I could express the LOVE I have for this book more than I'm able to。 I just freakishly LOVE it!!!! ❤️❤️❤️ 。。。more

Cons:I really did not like the beginning and found the main characters very unlikable。 The writing style was not my favorite and some of the dialogue just seemed odd in the first few chapters。 Pros:I loved the story overall once it picked up。 Characters became more likeable and the story was really hashed out by the end。
