Summary

It took me a lot of time to realise that this book was supposed to be of contemporary times and not the 80s :-0Quite a few dont-read-at-night-moments but not enough。。。

Loved this - great to see he's still writing excellent books at this late stage in his career。Gripping and endearing from start to finish。 (the last 3 or 4 pages were an odd end, but that didn't really make a difference to the experience) Loved this - great to see he's still writing excellent books at this late stage in his career。Gripping and endearing from start to finish。 (the last 3 or 4 pages were an odd end, but that didn't really make a difference to the experience) 。。。more

Fun lil King book。 Spooky, but not his best or even close。

Jamie sees dead people! This was a cracking little read, that was good to read in front of the window listening to the rain。 Would quite like a little follow up someday, just to see how things play out when he whistles。

This book got in my head, and I could not stop thinking about it。 Excellent characterization, as always。 Classic King。

These days you never know what you're going to get with a Stephen King book。 Except that there will likely be some sort of supernatural element。 I've read all but one of his books, and I can't really decide where this one would rank。 It takes an interesting idea but doesn't take it as far as I'd like。 His writing always grabs me and pulls me along at a quick pace, but as I've heard others say, he doesn't always stick the ending, which feels almost rushed, and I guessed the last big twist。 I woul These days you never know what you're going to get with a Stephen King book。 Except that there will likely be some sort of supernatural element。 I've read all but one of his books, and I can't really decide where this one would rank。 It takes an interesting idea but doesn't take it as far as I'd like。 His writing always grabs me and pulls me along at a quick pace, but as I've heard others say, he doesn't always stick the ending, which feels almost rushed, and I guessed the last big twist。 I would have read more about the main character, and I'm assuming there will be more stories in the future, as he's written similar continuing stories recently。 Overall I enjoyed it a lot, but I miss the days of the giant epics like The Stand and It。 。。。more

The master storyteller has done it again with this entertaining crime drama with a leading character with a “sixth sense。” Great fun, with a score or two of explatives。 3。5 stars。

I know this puts me in the minority。 I enjoyed the old feel good King Lines but I really didn’t care for the story line too much, maybe it needed some better characters? something more suspenseful? This book was lacking something。 It might be just me。

Fool me once, shame on youFool me twice, shame on meFool me thrice。。。 and shame turns into pleasureA pleasure, or some kind of Schadenfreude, is what I feel when reading the drivel the ghost-writers disguised as "Stephen King" shit out nowadays。 Like a train-wreck where you can't seem to look away。 "What has "Stephen King" written now?" keeps resounding in my head, more and more often, because it seems as though "he" publishes a new one every few months。 Some days, it's all I ever think about。 I Fool me once, shame on youFool me twice, shame on meFool me thrice。。。 and shame turns into pleasureA pleasure, or some kind of Schadenfreude, is what I feel when reading the drivel the ghost-writers disguised as "Stephen King" shit out nowadays。 Like a train-wreck where you can't seem to look away。 "What has "Stephen King" written now?" keeps resounding in my head, more and more often, because it seems as though "he" publishes a new one every few months。 Some days, it's all I ever think about。 I'm like a sniffing dog trained to drool when there's a bomb around, a Pavlovian masterpiece unable to escape its certain doom。 Well not doom of course, but wasting time on something disappointing comes close。 I've done the math。 If "King" writes 2 novels in a year, let's say each taking me 5 hours to read, this means that if I live to be 80, I will have wasted 24 days of my life。 Imagine what I could do in those 3 weeks。 Take up writing, I guess。 And before you point out I can't calculate for shit: are you SURE "King" will die? Cause I'm not so sure。 Who says he hasn't already? Or at least he is enjoying his well-earned retirement。 His ghost writers seem to do the trick just fine to the untrained eye and the conzoomers (heh I made that one up myself)。 Just like Marvel keeps shitting out worse and worse Avenger movies and Disney shits on the old Star Wars fans but keeps raking in millions and millions。 I guess nobody cares。 And if nobody cares, nobody notices。But I do。 I still do。 It's like when you buy your favorite candy bar and it has a brand-new packaging that screams NEW IMPROVED RECIPE and they've gone and replaced sugar with glucose syrup, butter with palm oil, and hazelnuts with artificial hazelnut flavoring。 I read the premise and think "well that actually sounds interesting, Sixth Sense meets Dr。 Sleep, I can dig this", I read the book and think "what an absolute horseshit of flimsy, paper-thin drivel that goes nowhere, has a shitty antagonist (a boring druggy dirty cop who -here comes the first pop culture reference- hates BLM。 Shocking!), not counting the deadlight monster that doesn't get nearly enough stage time), has a shitty protagonist (yet another wise beyond his years "cool" kid that says things like "correctamundo", "maximo depressing" and "heckerino"* and actually nowhere in the novel sounds genuinely like a kid), another carbon copy of Wendy Torrance, and the same bunch of side characters who are more like see-through set objects, furthering the progress of the story and enabling Jamie and us to get to the end smoothly。 Oh and look, here come the pop culture references! Haha Nancy Pelosi! Haha Fringe! Haha, internet trolls! Haha Uber!** Yes please America, give it to me in bite-size pieces so I can conzoome some more! Gross。"I can go on for hours because Later is a treasure chest of the same old rehashed ingredients the ghost writers have been using to sound like King。 It's like a Bingo game, or like Where's Waldo。 Can you point out the dishonest nostalgia? Can you point out the random flashing of a classic King novel? Can you point out the desperate attempt to appeal to the zoomer audience? But there are 2 more things I want to mention, because they stuck out more in this novel than in "King's" other recent ones, and felt fresh to me。 One, is that at one point Jamie tells his old neighbor about the evil ghost。 What follows is so far-fetched that it stuck out like a sore thumb on a leper's hand。 Even though Jamie's neighbor doesn't believe him at first, he still goes along with the story, and more disbelievingly, guesses all the right things for Jamie to do anyway。 It's this neighbor that immediately guesses that the evil spirit is not really the ghost of Mr。 Therriault, but some sort of demon, and that Jamie has to do a Ritual of Chüd (a shameless reference back to when Stephen King could write) to conquer it。 Right。。。 On the off chance that this neighbor is an old character from before whom I didn't recognize, and secretly does know about ghosts and demons I apologize。 But I'm willing to bet he isn't。Another mayor gripe I have with Later is that the narrator, Jamie, is so goddamn repetitive。 At first it's funny, him apologizing he is going to say "later" a lot in the novel - but damn, that doesn't justify him saying it on every odd page! Whether Jamie says it, or the ghost writer writes it, it's still bad writing。 And when Jamie has to remind us every 20 pages or so that this is "like I said before, a horror story" then it's not really a horror story anymore, isn't it?Before I conclude this review I want to address certain people that have been saying I'm a (presumably they think dumb) conspiracy believer for believing the last 5 novels or so haven't actually been written by King。 This latest novel puts SO much stress on a side-story about how Jamie's mom ends up ghost-writing the last novel of Regis Thomas, a dead writer, and how everyone praises this novel as "being the best saved for last" and "typical Regis" (a whole page is dedicated to these reviews, which adds nothing to the story)。 And it doesn't stop there。 When trying to convince his neighbor, Jamie confesses his mother wrote the last novel and succeeded because he was able to interrogate the ghost of R。 Thomas。 Burkett (the neighbor) then goes to investigate this and finds a few reviews that DO notice something odd about the final novel, or rather, they should have, because they say the prose appears fresh where it used to be dull, and the sex scenes appear lively, where they used to appear cliche。 Again, these reviews take up another full page。 I am seeing a pattern here。 Or rather, a clue。 It's the ghost of King trying to warn us that this really isn't his work。 And, as this novel taught me, ghosts can't lie。*this one is actually not true, but it could have。 I just forgot what other dumb slang Jamie spouts/the ghost writer uses to make Jamie a Real Human Bean。**wanna know the most unbelievable part of this novel? All those pop culture references and NOT ONE person mentions the Sixth Sense because Jamie can talk to ghosts。 。。。more

Later could best be compared to the movie The Sixth Sense, as the young teen Jamie can see dead people, but that would do it a disservice as this book is more than that。 Jamie has always had the ability to see and speak to dead people, but only his single mother knows, who wisely tells him to keep his abilities to himself。 Sadly, she does not follow her own advice and tells her cop girlfriend, who then uses Jamie's abilities to her own ends。 The first time she does so, a demon attaches to him wi Later could best be compared to the movie The Sixth Sense, as the young teen Jamie can see dead people, but that would do it a disservice as this book is more than that。 Jamie has always had the ability to see and speak to dead people, but only his single mother knows, who wisely tells him to keep his abilities to himself。 Sadly, she does not follow her own advice and tells her cop girlfriend, who then uses Jamie's abilities to her own ends。 The first time she does so, a demon attaches to him with dire consequences。 Told from Jamie's perspective, this is more a slice-of-life story with supernatural underpinnings, rather than the horror story it claims to be。 This short book gave me a Pet Sematary vibe, and other reviewers said it reminded them of It, but I never finished that book as it was much too long (I much prefer his smaller books and short stories)。 The ending tied up some loose ends, and it didn't quite end on a cliffhanger, yet the narrative could definitely be picked up for more stories in the future。 If so, I am ready for more adventures with Jamie! Why are you like this? Why even have that at all? It is completely needless。 I enjoyed it, but I've read better。 I did read this one to my husband while driving/porch sitting and he gave it 4 stars, but was really annoyed (but not surprised, as we've read a lot of King together) with the incest。 。。。more

A coming of age tale that centers around Jamie Conklin who just so happens to be able to see dead people。 We follow him from about 6 yrs of age until he's 22 and writing this (his) story for us。 I enjoyed this for the most part。 I especially liked Jamie as a character and I enjoyed his close relationship with his mother Tia。 It wasn't scary at all but I was intrigued with it。 That ending though??? Not a fan。 Bizarre and gross are the only ways I can describe it。 🤮 3 stars!

This book was amazing。 I didn't know what to expect, but it's the perfect bite-sized story from Stephen King。 I enjoyed it as much as I did Carrie。 King's voice of a growing kid who can see ghosts is outstanding, and the use of first-person narration is just icing on the cake。 I finished this book in a couple days, and once I got to page 100-ish, I really had trouble putting it down to finish all the other chores that come with normal life。 This book was amazing。 I didn't know what to expect, but it's the perfect bite-sized story from Stephen King。 I enjoyed it as much as I did Carrie。 King's voice of a growing kid who can see ghosts is outstanding, and the use of first-person narration is just icing on the cake。 I finished this book in a couple days, and once I got to page 100-ish, I really had trouble putting it down to finish all the other chores that come with normal life。 。。。more
