Summary

When Addie La Rue makes a pact with the devil, she trades her soul for immortality。 But there’s always a price – the devil takes away her place in the world, cursing her to be forgotten by everyone。

Addie flees her tiny home town in 18th-Century France, beginning a journey that takes her across the world, learning to live a life where no one remembers her and everything she owns is lost and broken。 Existing only as a muse for artists throughout history, she learns to fall in love anew every single day。

Her only companion on this journey is her dark devil with hypnotic green eyes, who visits her each year on the anniversary of their deal。 Alone in the world, Addie has no choice but to confront him, to understand him, maybe to beat him。

Until one day, in a second hand bookshop in Manhattan, Addie meets someone who remembers her。 Suddenly thrust back into a real, normal life, Addie realises she can’t escape her fate forever。

In the book Addie Larue makes a deal with a Satan-like character in which she lives forever but none remembers her。 The premise was great, the plot was great, the characters were rich and the writing was stellar。 That's my review。 If you want to know more, read it! Side note: This book is not high action。 It is more focused on the characters and their development, changes over time and relationships。 If you are looking for an action packed book this won't be it。 In the book Addie Larue makes a deal with a Satan-like character in which she lives forever but none remembers her。 The premise was great, the plot was great, the characters were rich and the writing was stellar。 That's my review。 If you want to know more, read it! Really interesting set-up and a great ending。 My only issue is that I just couldn't really care about the main character all that much。 Really interesting set-up and a great ending。 My only issue is that I just couldn't really care about the main character all that much。 。。。more

A unique tale with an ending I had not anticipated!

This is one of the most amazing pieces of literature I have yet to read this year。 Never before have I so openly sobbed over a book while still turning page after page。 Know going into it that it is a slow read but when it picks up it doesn’t stop。 I’ll remember this story forever, and more importantly, I’ll remember you Addie。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book is more of a 2。5 but I'm rounding down。 I HATED BOTH THE MC'S。 If I have to hear the words "seven freckles" ever again I quit。 I wanted to like this book, I really did。 But it was a bore until the last quarter。 I was rooting for Luc the whole time TBH, he was more correct than Addie was。 ALSO, BOTH ADDIE AND HENRY HAD SO MUCH PRIVILEGE?? Like the plot sounded interesting, but the book didn't reach my expectations。 This book is more of a 2。5 but I'm rounding down。 I HATED BOTH THE MC'S。 If I have to hear the words "seven freckles" ever again I quit。 I wanted to like this book, I really did。 But it was a bore until the last quarter。 I was rooting for Luc the whole time TBH, he was more correct than Addie was。 ALSO, BOTH ADDIE AND HENRY HAD SO MUCH PRIVILEGE?? For the sake of this review, I am going to pretend that I did not just drop the homemade fettuccini alfredo I slaved over last night onto the hair-riddled kitchen floor。 This book is beautifully written。 The concept behind the story is very interesting。 Although, It took me a while to get through the first third of the book, it did pick up for the rest of the story。 There was a part of the ending that I thought was a bit cliché, but I ultimately enjoyed this book。

Good story, got a bit slow and repetitive with the details。 I get it。。。 the shadow god smells like the woods。

I really liked the storyline of this book。 It reminded me of an old fairy tale。 However, I guess lately I'm just not into really long books。 The audio book is 17 hours。 The writing was very beautiful at times but I felt like it was just too detailed。 If you are up for a long book and would like to read something that you can find messages about women and life in general woven within the story then this book could be for you。 I really liked the storyline of this book。 It reminded me of an old fairy tale。 However, I guess lately I'm just not into really long books。 The audio book is 17 hours。 The writing was very beautiful at times but I felt like it was just too detailed。 If you are up for a long book and would like to read something that you can find messages about women and life in general woven within the story then this book could be for you。 。。。more

4。25 stars, rounded down to 4。This was a weird one for me。 Not because I didn't like it, because I did。 But because I felt like, at times, it just dragged on。I opened to listen to it and I really enjoyed the narration by Julia Whelan。 It is the first book by V。E。 Schwab that I've read。 I've always enjoyed magical realism。 But I stop short of fantasy most of the time。 This one teeters a bit。It reminded me at times of The Time Travelers Wife, and at others of The Book Thief。 I thoroughly enjoyed t 4。25 stars, rounded down to 4。This was a weird one for me。 Not because I didn't like it, because I did。 But because I felt like, at times, it just dragged on。I opened to listen to it and I really enjoyed the narration by Julia Whelan。 It is the first book by V。E。 Schwab that I've read。 I've always enjoyed magical realism。 But I stop short of fantasy most of the time。 This one teeters a bit。It reminded me at times of The Time Travelers Wife, and at others of The Book Thief。 I thoroughly enjoyed the premise- Addie LaRue was a young girl in rural France in the early 1700s when her parents decided to marry her to a widower in the village。 In a desperate move to avoid her circumstances, she prays to the "old gods that answer after dark", and winds up making a deal for her soul。 She is given "time" in exchange。 However, the catch is that as soon as people leave her sight, they immediately forget her。 She spends over 300 years in a battle of wills with "Luc" (Lucifer?), exploring the edges of her curse。In 2014, she meets Henry Strauss, a young American bookseller who sees her and remembers her。 And everything changes。I'd definitely recommend this one。For lots of reasons。But the quote at the end about Goodbyes being an ellipses and not a period struck me with such force。 Especially in this season of goodbyes in the expat world。 。。。more

4 stars in the truest sense, not in a inflated rating system。 The plot expertly weaves elements of the fantastical with the historical and the stakes of a battle for the soul with the triviality of your typical “boy meets girl” story。 The book jumps back and forth between separate timelines rather well, which gives the story a feeling of complexity without sacrificing ease of understanding (and allows for some clever use of foreshadowing)。 Equally paradoxically, I found the story of Addie equal 4 stars in the truest sense, not in a inflated rating system。 The plot expertly weaves elements of the fantastical with the historical and the stakes of a battle for the soul with the triviality of your typical “boy meets girl” story。 The book jumps back and forth between separate timelines rather well, which gives the story a feeling of complexity without sacrificing ease of understanding (and allows for some clever use of foreshadowing)。 Equally paradoxically, I found the story of Addie equal measures riveting and laborious。 Several chapters would fly by with no patience for finding out what happens next, then the tale would slump into a streak of inconsequential short stories that inspired a strong “let’s get on with it” impression。 The writing style was never boring or stale, there were just too many sections where I failed to see the worthwhile addition to the story。 If you’re in the market for a longer read with a female protagonist that is strong and resourceful while retaining her realistic humanity, or if you are a fan of exploring the ramifications of Faustian deals in the “real” world, then this is a great book for you。 If, however, a light page-turner is your preferred fare, I’d keep looking。 The story lends itself to a limited series adaption quite well, so maybe you’ll get to see it on HBO someday anyway。Side note: I experienced this on audiobook (Julia Whelan narration), and it was refreshing hearing the French accents and correct (I assume?) pronunciations of the French words。 Highly recommend the audiobook if you’re going to pick up this story。 。。。more

This was such a beautiful and addictive read that I had trouble putting it down。 The writing was gorgeous and the characters so well developed, that I actually got pretty emotional at the ending - which may be one of the most satisfying I’ve ever read。 I loved how the story shifted between the past and present and really made you feel the pain Addie felt for living so long being constantly forgotten by everyone。 Highly recommend!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Quizás, debido a las altas expectativas que tenía, el libro me ha parecido mucho más decepcionante de lo que podría haber sido。 Al principio me parecía muy lento pero continuaba pensando que era solo por ser la introducción。 Pero cuando llegue a las 350 páginas y vi que todavía no había pasado nada relevante ya estaba cansada del libro。 Las últimas 100 hojas no están mal aunque tampoco son de 10。A pesar de tener tantas hojas no ha logrado empatizar con los personajes。 A Addie al final es la que Quizás, debido a las altas expectativas que tenía, el libro me ha parecido mucho más decepcionante de lo que podría haber sido。 Al principio me parecía muy lento pero continuaba pensando que era solo por ser la introducción。 Pero cuando llegue a las 350 páginas y vi que todavía no había pasado nada relevante ya estaba cansada del libro。 Las últimas 100 hojas no están mal aunque tampoco son de 10。A pesar de tener tantas hojas no ha logrado empatizar con los personajes。 A Addie al final es la que más conoces, pero Henry no me cayó bien y Luc solo lo empezamos a conocer bien en las últimas 100 hojas。Lo que más me apena y me hace ponerle una nota tan baja al libro es que es una historia a la que veo muchísimo potencial y sin cambiar aspectos relevantes de la trama, sino simplemente sacando partido de las situaciones y personajes históricos que conoce Addie en vez de darles dos líneas, desarrollando desde el principio la historia de Luc y Addie en vez de deprisa y corriendo al final y no haciendo tantos cambios de tiempo a cada capítulo。 Los capítulos del "presente" de Henry y Addie se me hacían larguísimos, en realidad no pasa nada relevante entre ellos a parte de que se conocen y a mi parecer no pegan como pareja, la mayoría acabé leyéndomelos por encima。En definitiva, una historia con potencial, mal estructurada y desarrollada。 No entiendo por qué tiene tanto hype el libro。 Quizás, con menos expectativas, lo hubiera disfrutado algo más, aunque no se si hubiera podido aguantar 350 hojas sin que pasara gran cosa。。。 。。。more

This book has reminded me to relish the life I am given。 What an easy, heart-felt, yet heart-wrenching, read—the kind I stayed up until 4 am to read about the life of Addie LaRue。 My favorite book I have read in a long time!

I absolutely loved this book! The book goes back and forth between past and present (seems to be the trend for so many books lately), however, it fit the story and was done well so that there wasn’t any confusion, nor did it didn’t come across as just a distraction。 This book covered so many different topics: loneliness, societal expectations, self doubt/insecurities, personal identity, sexual exploration, faith, (I know I’m missing some)。 Why I really rave about this book though, is the imagery I absolutely loved this book! 3。5* I really had a hard time getting through this。 With all the hype of this book I really expected this to really WOW me and it fell short。

It kept my attention for the first 1/3 of the book。 After that, it became quite predictable and then just flat out boring。 To live 300 years and be such a dull person。。。 such a waste!

A warm hug。 That’s what this book is。 A beautiful, timeless piece。 I loved every second of it。 Quotes: “March is such a fickle month。 It is the seam between winter and spring—though seam suggests an even hem, and March is more like a rough line of stitches sewn by an unsteady hand, swinging wildly between January gusts and June greens。 You don’t know what you’ll find, until you step outside。”“A story is an idea, wild as a weed, springing up wherever it is planted。”“You can have my life when I am A warm hug。 That’s what this book is。 A beautiful, timeless piece。 I loved every second of it。 Quotes: “March is such a fickle month。 It is the seam between winter and spring—though seam suggests an even hem, and March is more like a rough line of stitches sewn by an unsteady hand, swinging wildly between January gusts and June greens。 You don’t know what you’ll find, until you step outside。”“A story is an idea, wild as a weed, springing up wherever it is planted。”“You can have my life when I am done with it。 You can have my soul when I don’t want it anymore。”“When she carved the terms of her new deal, when she traded her soul for herself, she did not say forever, but as long as you want me by your side。 And those are not the same at all。”“After all, life seems very long sometimes, but he knows it will go so fast, and he doesn’t want to miss a moment。”“She peels back the cover, turns past the title to the dedication。 Three small words rest in the center of the page。 I remember you。”“She does not know if it was love, or simply a reprieve。 If contentment can compete with passion, if warmth will ever be as strong as heat。 But it was a gift。” 。。。more

this is my favorite book of all time and i’ve seen a lot of people call it boring but the thing is that it’s not supposed to be an action packed and eventful plot, it’s the tales of a 300 year old girl who can’t be remembered by anyone and all of the people she loved who couldn’t love her back。 this book has the most beautiful writing style i’ve ever seen in my life i’m so jealous!!!!!!!! it’s definitely not for everyone and it’s a very long read but if you can appreciate really really gorgeous this is my favorite book of all time and i’ve seen a lot of people call it boring but the thing is that it’s not supposed to be an action packed and eventful plot, it’s the tales of a 300 year old girl who can’t be remembered by anyone and all of the people she loved who couldn’t love her back。 this book has the most beautiful writing style i’ve ever seen in my life i’m so jealous!!!!!!!! it’s definitely not for everyone and it’s a very long read but if you can appreciate really really gorgeous writing i recommend this book <3333 。。。more

Im just not getting into such a story right now。 The premise? 1600s Girl doesn’t want to marry so she makes a “pact” with a female devil? She gets her freedom but in exchange nobody will ever remember her。 Of yeah, she lives forever。 DNF
