What a wonderful read！Such a lovely book， Leila’s 10 minutes and 38 seconds of ‘Madeline moments’ where beautiful to read， as were the Five friends in the following 24 hours。 And。。。。amidst the sadness and madness of those final pages， I found myself chuckling along with the misfortune the Five faced in their quest ！！！ All this and a vivid toe dip into a culture quite different to my own 。。。。。

This is the 6th novel I've read from Turkish author Elif Shafak。 I like this author very much because each title is different from the other， whether it's the main theme or the writing style。 For this book， the author presents the story as if it's a crime novel， but it really is about the life of the last victim， which flashes through her brain during 10 minutes and 38 seconds before being brain dead。 The last victim was a 40 years old prostitute in Istanbul， but she was born far away in a rural This is the 6th novel I've read from Turkish author Elif Shafak。 I like this author very much because each title is different from the other， whether it's the main theme or the writing style。 For this book， the author presents the story as if it's a crime novel， but it really is about the life of the last victim， which flashes through her brain during 10 minutes and 38 seconds before being brain dead。 The last victim was a 40 years old prostitute in Istanbul， but she was born far away in a rural city in a conservative family。 Due to family lies， tragedies， and traditional way of life， the leading character left her family and hometown to the big city of Istanbul， where she knew nobody and nothing about and fell immediately in prostitution。 However， despite the many setbacks in her life， she kept a good heart making her win several friends， from different horizons， who lived a similar life to her。The novel is about women， who faces countless of tragedies during their childhood and adult lives and cannot find their place in a traditional and conservative society。 。。。more

It took me forever to finish this particular book。This was my first read by Elif Shafak and I enjoyed almost every page of it。There was page that made me feel angry，then there was page making me feel sad and again some page made me think how your friends-THE WATER RELATIONSHIPS can make your not good enough life a bit more tolerable 💕

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 Really enjoyed the majority of this book。 However， once Leila’s friends got together after she died the book seemed to be written by another author， the rhythm changed and the plot became slightly ridiculous。 Don’t let this put you off though as the rest of the book was worth my time - I just felt the ending was a little disrespectful to the reader and to Leila’s story。

مؤلمة قاسية واقعية إنسانية。。。 تأسرك إليف شافاك منذ اللحظات الأولى للرواية، فتجد نفسك مفتونا بها。تجرد إليف و تعري إنسانيتنا، فنحن على إختلاف اجناسنا ألواننا أحجامنا و أطوالنا بالنهاية بشر، نحمل الخير كما نحمل الشر。 لايوجد منا من هو بلا خطيئة فلنتوقف عن راس الآخرين بالحجارة و لنعود لإنسانيتنا و نكون لطفاء أكثر مع الآخرين فلكل همومه و أحزانه。

A strong premise， and sense of place。 The first half I greatly enjoyed， but was less convinced by the second half which degenerated into something like a script for a semi-comedic heist movie。 The characters seemed sketched rather than fully fleshed out， but still a worthwhile read。
