Summary

A bank robber on the run locks himself in with an over-enthusiastic estate agent, two bitter IKEA-addicts, a pregnant woman, a suicidal multi-millionaire and a rabbit。 In the end the robber gives up and lets everyone go, but when the police storm the apartment it is 。 。 。 empty。

In a series of dysfunctional testimonies after the event, the witnesses all tell their version of what really happened and it's clear we have a classic locked-room mystery on our hands: How did the robber manage to escape? Why is everyone so angry? And: What is WRONG with people these days?

I loved this book。 I expected nothing less of Fredrik Backman。 This was true storytelling, character development and legitimate observations about life rolled into one fantastic book。

This book was very hard for me to follow along with。 I didn’t want to give up on reading it, but it certainly wasn’t a page turner for me。 I did really enjoy the compassion and love the author weaved into the story。 The author’s sarcasm was entertaining, as well。 For me, the ending was the best part。

Backman is the king of quirky, poignant, unusual relationships。 This book is all of those things, and I love his commentary on the human struggle。。。some of the paragraphs resonated so much with me I had to read them aloud to my husband! A good read, with a few twists as well!

Wow。 I have never read a more messy yet so perfectly put together novel。 Amazing!!

You need this book in your life。 It has laugh out loud moments, and a few teary-eye moments。 Seriously, read this book。“。。。most of us remain strangers, we never know what we do to each other, how your life is affected by mine。”

I find Backman's storytelling style quirky which is one of the reason I love it。 He has a number of characters which you come to know through their back stories。 Each one is flawed dealing with life the best way they know how。 I found something to love about each one of them。 A insightful look into the lives of ordinary imperfect people。 The story of a hostage taking incident is definitely NOT the focus of the narrative, it is getting to know the cast of characters。 I find Backman's storytelling style quirky which is one of the reason I love it。 He has a number of characters which you come to know through their back stories。 Each one is flawed dealing with life the best way they know how。 I found something to love about each one of them。 A insightful look into the lives of ordinary imperfect people。 The story of a hostage taking incident is definitely NOT the focus of the narrative, it is getting to know the cast of characters。 。。。more

One of the best books I have read in a long time。 Sincere, funny, emotional, heart-felt, thought-provoking and easy to read。 Lives intertwine in such a beautiful way that makes you realize they do in real life as well。 Just absolutely loved this book。 Highly recommend。

This book was a slow starter for me。 I was initially annoyed by ridiculous dialog and what appeared to be deliberate quirkiness。 The characters did not feel real, and the story felt contrived。 But。 As the book progressed, the oddities began to resolve。 The characters began making sense。 I was drawn in。 And took pleasure in the ending。 Also, this book gave me these words from Swedish poet Bodil Malmsten:Nothing must happen to you No, what I am sayingEverything must happen to youAnd it must be won This book was a slow starter for me。 I was initially annoyed by ridiculous dialog and what appeared to be deliberate quirkiness。 The characters did not feel real, and the story felt contrived。 But。 As the book progressed, the oddities began to resolve。 The characters began making sense。 I was drawn in。 And took pleasure in the ending。 Also, this book gave me these words from Swedish poet Bodil Malmsten:Nothing must happen to you No, what I am sayingEverything must happen to youAnd it must be wonderful I 。。。more

UnexpectedAbsurd and funny, heartfelt and complex。 I loved this book。the story was woven with inside jokes, nods and winks and unexpected sweetness。 All awkward, so much loss, so much disconnection, then repair。 Compelling, humorous, thoughtful。 Well crafted。

Fredrik Backman you are brilliant。 After a slow start and much anxiety over the interviews I grew to love this book。 It was thought provoking, humorous, and sad all at the same time。 A wonderful book for our May book club

I’m not sure what is was about this book, but it got me out of my reading slump。 I wasn’t really sure what to expect。 All I knew was that I’ve seen it all over social media and it happened to be 25% off at my local Shoppers Drug Mart。 But I’m so glad I picked it up。 I found it funny, heartwarming and I found it hit close to home with me。 I saw some other reviews saying they hated all the characters, and I have to admit, I agree。 I don’t really think I was rooting for anyone, but some of the quot I’m not sure what is was about this book, but it got me out of my reading slump。 I wasn’t really sure what to expect。 All I knew was that I’ve seen it all over social media and it happened to be 25% off at my local Shoppers Drug Mart。 But I’m so glad I picked it up。 I found it funny, heartwarming and I found it hit close to home with me。 I saw some other reviews saying they hated all the characters, and I have to admit, I agree。 I don’t really think I was rooting for anyone, but some of the quotes in here just, sang to me, for lack of a better term。 It’s an easy read that speaks to those of us who feel like we spend our days just spinning our wheels and not going anywhere。 I’d read it again for sure and will be recommending this to many people。 。。。more

Actual rating 3。5*I am a massive fan of Backman’s work and again he had me laughing out loud in the first few pages。 I really did enjoy the first chapters but from there, I just found the story so silly - I realise it was meant to be so, but at times, it was annoying to follow。 I didn’t really fully connect with any of the characters (although bless the 90+ year old lady, Estelle)。 And then, after all of that, I liked the ending。 An ending of hope, love and a reflection of the good parts of huma Actual rating 3。5*I am a massive fan of Backman’s work and again he had me laughing out loud in the first few pages。 I really did enjoy the first chapters but from there, I just found the story so silly - I realise it was meant to be so, but at times, it was annoying to follow。 I didn’t really fully connect with any of the characters (although bless the 90+ year old lady, Estelle)。 And then, after all of that, I liked the ending。 An ending of hope, love and a reflection of the good parts of humanity。 My 3* rating comes from my inability to connect with the storyline - ‘an idiots’ hostage situation … Backman’s words, not mine。 My extra half a star comes because I think Backman is a bloody good writer and makes excellent human observations。 If you are going to read this one, I think you should do so whilst in a happy, care free mood :) 。。。more

I really loved this book! An easy read that ends up being deeper than I expected。 A hanging characters, with funny and quirky scenarios。 Backman cleverly misleads the reader, resulting in surprising twists。 My one critique of this book is that young people/millennials aren’t characterized in a very flattering way, but it did not affect my reading nor enjoyment of the novel。

At first you might think - Wth am I reading ? Your head may spin a little like Linda Blair in the Exorcist 。I have these words for you - Don’t Give Up ! It gets better - it’s pretty funny 。 I really laughed once the interviews startedAnd might I add the pooping bunny might just take the cake 。 It also might make you tear up a bit 。Quirky but fun- thumbs up 👍🏻

I’m a little torn about this book。 Parts of it I really enjoyed but the beginning seemed overly sardonic and the end felt like a moral。 Overall a fun read but not my favorite style of writing。

His words wreck me! It took me forever to finish this one。 But that is on me。 I haven’t been able to focus on anything lately。 His words are beautiful。 The characters are so human and so familiar, as if I may have passed them at some omit in my life。 Beautiful!

It's fascinating how Fredrick Backman writes about loss, loneliness and the difficult times people face in a way that is both deeply touching and amusing, but never frivolous。 Carries forward a lot of themes from A Man Called Ove, and packages it into the fun form an investigation。 Loved it !
