Summary

In this unforgettable seventh book in the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling Keeper of the Lost Cities series, Sophie must let the past and present blur together, because the deadliest secrets are always the ones that get erased。

Sophie Foster doesn’t know what—or whom—to believe。 And in a game with this many players, the worst mistake can be focusing on the wrong threat。

But when the Neverseen prove that Sophie’s far more vulnerable than she ever imagined, she realizes it’s time to change the rules。 Her powerful abilities can only protect her so far。 To face down ruthless enemies, she must learn to fight。

Unfortunately, battle training can’t help a beloved friend who’s facing a whole different danger—where the only solution involves one of the biggest risks Sophie and her friends have ever taken。 And the distraction might be exactly what the villains have been waiting for。

My new, hot take on this series is that it was a really good idea, but it wasn’t written the greatest。 I know a large part of that is the publishing company, deadlines, new writer, etc。 It’s just a little bit sad knowing that this story didn’t quite live up to its potential, in my observation。 A lotta drama in this book; emotional craziness, weird explanations, wildly spinning multiple plot points。 New characters, more insane world-building。 (also, sidenote, I WA 850+ pages of what exactly lol?? Okay I really hate this all cognate no secrets thing between fitz and Sophie。 And before I thought it was because I wanted her to be special or something but I just realized it’s because that seems like a toxic, abusive relationship。 He constantly demands that she should share everything with him and makes her feel guilty for not doing so。 And that’s kind of excused in the book as oh secrets hurt the cognate relationship。 But if she’s not comfortable enough to share them on her own then they sho Okay I really hate this all cognate no secrets thing between fitz and Sophie。 And before I thought it was because I wanted her to be special or something but I just realized it’s because that seems like a toxic, abusive relationship。 He constantly demands that she should share everything with him and makes her feel guilty for not doing so。 And that’s kind of excused in the book as oh secrets hurt the cognate relationship。 But if she’s not comfortable enough to share them on her own then they shouldn’t be cognates at all。 And especially not after he keeps bugging her about it。 I don’t like Fitz on his own either。 He’s too angry and lashes out at Sophie any time he gets hurt and always portrayed as the “perfect boy” when he’s not。 He does stuff for her like baking or whatever he did in book 6 making her feel like oh he cares so much about me。 That just feels like manipulation to make her feel obligated to him。 Keefe is kinda better now but before he also had all those issues where he’d just dump stuff on her and not trust her and just go off and do whatever he wanted。 Or whatever he felt was right without considering her。 Dex was the only nice option (presented in the book - I’d actually like to see something with Biana or Tam or Linh) and I hate that he was eliminated。 And seriously what’s up with Sophie and fitz calling on silveny when they want something from her and then forgetting about her the rest of the time。Spoiler:Hahahah nice, really great ending。 I truly hate Fitzphie and I hope it burns to ashes 。。。more

SO many things happened in this book, so many changes and endings。 We finally got an end to the Sophie and Fitz storyline (or maybe a beginning ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ), we found out about Alvar, and the shadow echos。 We also got a lot of beginnings, Tam, Marella and Fintan, e。t。c One thing that I particularly like is the ending, it ends on a comparatively un-important role, but Shannon makes it feel just at devastating。

*3。5 stars ⭐️ This installment was extremely long despite the fact that nothing really happened。 It had it’s moments that were pretty good, but overall it’s a pretty weak installment。 I’m also rooting for a different ship to sail so that’s probably another reason why I found it underwhelming。

Wow。 I could write an essay about this book and I think I might just let’s start with Fitz。 Why is he so obsessed with getting a good match the elvin world as he knows it is crumbling so he must realize that having a good match isn’t as important as he thought it was。 He’s pressuring Sophie into something she doesn’t even want and for what? Just so people don’t judge him? People are going to judge him just because he’s a Vacker and their legacy is ruined now。 Then there’s Keefe。 Wow I mean readi Wow。 I could write an essay about this book and I think I might just let’s start with Fitz。 Why is he so obsessed with getting a good match the elvin world as he knows it is crumbling so he must realize that having a good match isn’t as important as he thought it was。 He’s pressuring Sophie into something she doesn’t even want and for what? Just so people don’t judge him? People are going to judge him just because he’s a Vacker and their legacy is ruined now。 Then there’s Keefe。 Wow I mean reading the chapter from his point of view was so illuminating。 I wasn’t 100% sure that he was into Sophie until he said he would wait for her and hope that things pan out for them but now that he said that I’m 10000% back on the Foster-Keefe Team!!! I don’t get why Lady Gisela wants Tam to kill Keefe though。。。 makes no sense to me。 So then Tam! Of all characters I hate him less but most of the time I just wish I knew what he was thinking。。。 he’s really mysterious which is a good character trait but I never understand him and why he acts the way he does。 Then Linh。 I hate her sm。 I think she should have been killed off right after she and Sophie and Keefe saved Atlantis(which was iconic btw)。 Also we get that Linh and Wylie are together but they’re such a bad couple。 Then there’s Dex。 I feel like he was barely a part of this book which was annoying bc I liked his character but after Sophie kissed him I guess that was to be expected。。。 Then there’s Biana and I like her as a side character but I feel like we don’t know enough about her character。 She’s convenient in fights because she’s a vanisher but other than that what’s the purpose of her character? Now Marella is just the bane of my existence。 She does nothing and she’s so self righteous but she has nothing to be proud of and she’s ALWAYS salty towards Sophie but for no reason and when she was like ‘i wanna fight’ I was fuming she doesn’t need to learn to defend herself because nobody cares enough about her to actually attack her。 She just likes feeling important and like she’s part of the group and yeah I just hate her。 Ro is obviously still my favorite body guard and her dynamic with Keefe is just AMAZING。 The Neverseen always seems to know exaclty what Sophie is transmitting to her friends and this just pisses me off so bad。 Like how are they so far ahead of the Black Swan。 Now Sophie has made some pretty bad decisions in this book。 First of all she knocked out Sandor, Fitz and Grizel with her inflicting just because she didn’t think to open her eyes to see what was actually happening。 Then the majority of the book took place in Elwin’s healing center and while I love Elwin and how he doesn’t understand what Fitzphie is and all the jokes about it, the healing center scenes were still a bit slow。 I mean when Keefe was teaching Sophie skills that was useful and actually interesting but then basically after Fitz woke up it was just mushy Fitzphie stuff which i’m not here for at all! What really annoys me is how little the Black swan does。 Like they set up security whenever they think something bad is going to happen but that’s all they do。 They leave everything else up to a bunch of teenagers which is just stupid。 I mean they’re teenagers for heavens sakes。 More importantly, the Neverseen always says that the Black Swan is predictable but the Neverseen is SOO much more predictable。 You KNOW that if there’s one big thing going on there’s at least two side things going on and you know they’re going to show up with Ruy and probably Umber。 The only reason that the Neverseen is winning is because when Sophie inflicts they see that and prepare for it next time but the Black Swan only prepares for things they think might happen not things they know will happen like RUY TRAPPING EVERYONE IN A FORCE FIELD!!! Also I hope Sophie has another power because right now all her powers suck。 Her telepathy is basically no good without Fitz and even with him they can barely read anyone’s mind。 Her inflicting is sloppy at best and she uses it at the worst possible times tol。 Her enhancing only helps other and does nothing for herself and her polyglot ability barely ever comes in handy。 She could have had water or fire powers?? I’d even be okay with her being a vanisher or a shade but she’s the main character! Give us something good。 Even tho I was very harshly critical of this book I cannot wait to read the next one!!! 。。。more

The first in the series that really fell flat for me。 The romance plot line of these is really picking up which usually I’m all for。 The characters have gotten older so it makes sense they’re thinking more about dating each other as all giant friend groups are destined to do, but I didn’t like it here。 I would’ve liked to see them spend more time saving the world than hearing Sophie’s interior monologue about her love triangle。 With that being said there have been some good romance lines and I t The first in the series that really fell flat for me。 The romance plot line of these is really picking up which usually I’m all for。 The characters have gotten older so it makes sense they’re thinking more about dating each other as all giant friend groups are destined to do, but I didn’t like it here。 I would’ve liked to see them spend more time saving the world than hearing Sophie’s interior monologue about her love triangle。 With that being said there have been some good romance lines and I think Keefe should still be her pick but let’s see。 Also my favorite character is no longer Keefe but rather the Pegasus unicorn combo。 Mind you that horse’s favorite character is Keefe so I haven’t strayed too far。 This book really gets the 3 star because it was just kind of boring。 Early on they get into a big battle and are severely injured。 We then spend I don’t even know how many chapters just in the school clinic watching them recover。 It was boring and allowed way too much time to ruminate on the love triangle。 At what age should kids start reading books with love triangles? Twilight is the first standout for me and I think that was about 11。 For some reason that now feels too young to me which is hypocritical maybe? Rating - 3。5。 This is the 7th book in Keeper of the Lost Cities and I don't have much to say about this book。 The plot was little to the good side。 This book is about how Sophie and her friends try to thwart the plans of their enemies - because we can't let the villain win, right? not really。 there’s some stuff that happens, but sophie doesn’t *do* anything, really。 she has no agency, which i really really hate in most protagonists and sophie is not an exception。basically the horse is ready to give birth。 it doesn’t go well because she has twins and so to save the horse babies sophie agrees to the troll alliance。 and said troll alliance goes nowhere for the rest of the book。then we get to the climax, sort of, where they fight at everglen and big troll secret and the “Vacker legacy” is exposed。。。one of the Vackers lied a lot。 is that it? like is that what caused Alvar to join the neverseen? i’m confused man because that very underwhelmingalso, tam unwillingly joins the neverseen at the very end out of literally nowhere, fitz and sophie get together (not at the end and not really) and because we love ending on cliffhangers, here’s the final line:Sophie Elizabeth Foster is Unmatchable。 yes。 yes。 really?i cannot express in this review just how。。。boring, underwhelming, generally lame this book is。 like, every other page there’s some big, dramatic statement。 here, example: Fitz had almost kissed her。 And he’d told her he wanted to find her name on his match lists。 And she’d told him she’d liked him forever。 And he’d been so helpful and amazing ever since。 But 。 。 。 none of that actually meant they were dating。 and: Showering had always been a way to center herself。 A way to regroup and start again。 “They didn’t break me,” she said again。 “They’ll never break me。” She wasn’t the weak, predictable girl the Neverseen thought she was。 She was Sophie Foster。 She was the moonlark。 And starting tomorrow, she was learning to fight back。 i highlighted about 50 of these, but i definitely missed a great deal of them。 so。it’s just。。。like, everything is so drawn out and this book could’ve been like 200 or 300 pages shorter。my biggest problem with this book is that i feel that there was no point to it。 - did anything happen? i mean, technically yes, but it certainly doesn’t feel that way。 - did anything change? sure, tam is part of the neverseen now, but he has been so minor a character that it doesn’t really matter。 fitz and sophie know each other’s feelings, but it doesn’t matter because it doesn’t go anywhere。 other than that。。。there are so many characters at this point that if character relationships change it’s barely noticeable and though sophie is technically allied with the trolls it feels so small and irrelevant (having been barely dealt with in the story) that it is irrelevant。 - basically while i guess things did change it doesn’t feel like anything changed in any important ways。 and not because the changes were subtle and clever。 because they were delivered badly and/or irrelevantso。。。why did i give this book 2 stars? well, because i did laugh at that one line。 so, i mean。(that one line): “You do,” Magnate Leto agreed。 “And I found an entire room filled with recordings of speeches from the Ancient Councillors that I think you’ll find particularly enjoyable。” Ro grabbed Keefe’s arm and hauled him toward the door。 “We’re going to your session, and you’re acing that test and taking lots of notes or I will hang a banner in the middle of this campus—and we both know what I will have that banner say!” “Bo and Ro 4 Eva?” Keefe guessed, because he clearly had a death wish。 sorry for the long and rambling review thank you[END REVIEW (finally)] 。。。more

Yes, that was a little disappointing but since we got the small snippet of Keefe talking with Alden before the beginning part of Flashback, I am not THAT unhappy。 We're gonna start of with the easiest thing to talk about and save the best for last。 The begging, wow! Thats a way to start out, and I'm fairly impressed, it was a good way to get a wake up call。 I do have to say the Neverseen are very calculated and have amazing plans and that's probably why its sorta impossible to beat them。 Silveny's baby almost died。 Yeah that happened as well as。。。 Twins! I gotta say I'm exited for that, and the big fight at the end with the weird creature things in the spooky out house, alright then。 I will say Fitz is getting very serial-killerish。 I mean what? You're telling me that Sophie is not scared of him by the end。 I mean look at Keefe, do you see how gentle and amazing he is with Sophie, He genuinely cares for her and is so careful and safe with her。 Fitz is not it。 He was willing to MURDER HIS BROTHER!!!! and then afterward traps in in some boiling hot, drowning goo and he goes "Yeah that was, fun, glad I did that!" Like seriously? He is so toxic and kinda manipulative, if you see close enough。 Yeah, Sophie didn't sit next to him at lunch, and then he goes out acting all sad and pouty because she didn't, really? And then she wants to talk to Keefe alone, and he goes off, isn't that a Bright red flag。 Trust me I could go on and on about how Fitz is cranky, selfish has anger issues and is toxic。 I REALLY can't see Sophie having a good happy relationship with him。 Also I gotta say Sophie is kinda blind when it comes to literally seeing that KEEFE HAS FEELINGS FOR HER!!!!! But maybe Fitz will turn away because she is unmatchable and Keefe will come comfort her and then the rest will be history, I don't know, we'll see, we'll hope。 Until next time。。 。。。more

To begin with, the writing was engaging as always。 It flowed nicely and had the perfect little edge of sarcasm。 The dialogue is so realistic that it kinda gives author-me chills。 I was definitely firmly engaged throughout the entire book and had to force myself (it took LOTS of effort, trust me) to actually sleep at night instead of speed-reading to see how it ended (and jsyk it ended frustratingly - but that's normal。 Cliffhangers。 Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha) I digress。 The plot was solid and Messenger did a wonderful job of not giving me enough clues to figure out what was happening。 That made me veeery happy。 (and also really mad) The character development stayed consistent with previous books and was pretty impressive, actually。 I know Sophie and her friends way better after reading this book than I did before。 All of that praise given, there were just a few cons that I should mention because obviously this is supposed to be a book review and not a rave party。 They weren't enough to lower the rating, but they're also important。 The first one was that less happened。 The book is the same length as all the others, but I felt like we spent much more time in one place with no answers instead of moving around with no answers。 Which was maddening。 And the other is much more significant to me: that is the idea put forth vaguely in this book that darkness is somehow stronger than light。 What with references to Shadowflux and "embrace the darkness" and "the darkness is better than the light," I was thoroughly nauseated by the end。 Now I know those things were coming from the enemy side, but still。 It definitely bothered me, especially since I'm a Christian and worship the Creator of light。。。 Other than those two cons, though, I was very impressed with this seventh installment of the KOTLC series! PS: Kudos to you if you actually read all that - sorry it was so long! 🥴 。。。more
