Summary

From Finnish saunas and soppy otters to grief, grandparents and Kellogg's anti-masturbation pants, Slug is a book which holds a mirror lovingly up to the world, past and present, through Hollie's driving, funny, hopeful poetry and prose。 Slug is about the human condition: of birth and death and how we manage the possibilities in-between。

This is one of those rare books that are excellent because the author has managed, somehow, to voice her compassion as much as her rage, her intelligence and her female experience just as much as her frustrations with society and her disappointment in the taboos we are all expected to just not discuss as though they don't affect us。It is extremely affecting and special to read an articulate and reasoned account of why everything you go through is so bloody well worthwhile talking about。 I cried, This is one of those rare books that are excellent because the author has managed, somehow, to voice her compassion as much as her rage, her intelligence and her female experience just as much as her frustrations with society and her disappointment in the taboos we are all expected to just not discuss as though they don't affect us。It is extremely affecting and special to read an articulate and reasoned account of why everything you go through is so bloody well worthwhile talking about。 I cried, I laughed, I felt better for reading it。 It will read it repeatedly。 I wanted to read so much of it to so many people。Mainly, overall, this book was yet another thing in my life that has reminded me how lucky I am to have my Gran in my life。The reason for this is the following list:Things Gran's are known for teaching their Granddaughters that my Gran did teach me:- How to bake a cake- How to do the gardening- The value of fixing things- The value of fully committing to thingsThings my Gran taught me very pointedly that most Gran's aren't known for teaching their Granddaughters:- Swearing at Tinfoil really doesn't help you get it out of the flapjack any easier- swearing in general, whenever you feel it is necessary- if something isn't working for you any more, sling it。 Apply this to plants that don't come back to life as liberally as you do to friendships that seem like too much hard work- Some things just aren't worth keeping。 Treat yourself for the sake of it instead。- test out the things you plan to commit to。 Apply this to cars, recipes and men。- if you want a pint, order a damn pint。- it is hilarious, apparently, to shout 'Granny Bashing!' in public spaces then elbow me going "they think I'm serious Jes"Things my Gran has seen fit to discuss with me because of this:- my sex life- my finances- why the fuck I'm bothering over everything so much instead of having a napThings my Gran is yet to teach me how to do that she does very well:- How she puts tights on without doing a dance - How she can sit and just not do the dusting- play pokerI'm grateful for all these things。 I'm grateful I get to have an adult relationship with my Gran。 One that she ensures doesn't stick within the realms of standard propriety。 I'm so lucky, she set the tone。 I discuss these things in various depths with most of the women in my life and I know that marks quite the divergence from the amount of women my Gran had to talk to about these things at my age。 Our experiences are so enriched if we see this change and keep driving these conversations。That's what this book reminded me, how amazing it is that I don't think twice about so many things that I'm sure my Gran was once told not to discuss。 And how lucky I am she will now make me discuss them with her。Read this book, then come talk to me about it。 。。。more

Even just from the introduction I felt I was sold and knew I would enjoy this book very much。 Everything about it just absolutely engrossed me and had me fully engaged all the way through。 The writing I just thought was brilliant; it moved me, it made me laugh, made me smile and has so many moments where it just sucker punch hit me because it’s just so blunt and knowing。 I just really loved the format, it’s a mixture of poetry (all split into different sections by theme) and part memoir too, with a sprinkling of stories included too。 This book covers themes such as Family, Grief, Friendships, Sex, Self love and life!。 This is the first experience of this authors work and I will absolutely be ordering her other books to enjoy too! Also I have enjoyed watching videos on YouTube and Insta of the poems being read。 This is definitely a 5 ⭐️ read for me。 Loved every single page and cannot wait to read more by this writer。 Beautiful and brilliant。 。。。more

I love Hollie。 Listening to this felt like chatting with a friend。 I felt myself yelling “yes!” at so many times。 I’m going to have to buy a paper copy to shove at my friends。

Absolutely brilliant。 I find myself agreeing with everything she writes! Loved the poems, and the explanation before the poems even more, and the short stories were a surprising treat! Hollie hits the nail on the head in so many topics。 Blood, mirrors and parenting really spoke to me in particular。 I listened to the audio book, absolute best way to enjoy as listening to her poems in her own voice is fantastic 。 Also wish I had a hard copy to admire on my shelf and take to her gigs to get signed。 Absolutely brilliant。 I find myself agreeing with everything she writes!
