Summary

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off meets Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist in this romp through the city that never sleeps from the New York Times bestselling author of Since You’ve Been Gone, Morgan Matson

Two girls。 One night。 Zero phones。

Kat and Stevie—best friends, theater kids, polar opposites—have snuck away from the suburbs to spend a night in New York City。 They have it all planned out。 They’ll see a play, eat at the city’s hottest restaurant, and have the best。 Night。 Ever。 What could go wrong?

Well。 Kind of a lot?

They’re barely off the train before they’re dealing with destroyed phones, family drama, and unexpected Pomeranians。 Over the next few hours, they’ll have to grapple with old flames, terrible theater, and unhelpful cab drivers。 But there are also cute boys to kiss, parties to crash, dry cleaning to deliver (don’t ask), and the world’s best museum to explore。

Over the course of a wild night in the city that never sleeps, both Kat and Stevie will get a wake-up call about their friendship, their choices…and finally discover what they really want for their future。

That is, assuming they can make it to Grand Central before the clock strikes midnight。

4。5 so cute and fun!

Do I feel narcissistic about how much I loved this book about wealthy, white, suburban Connecticut teenagers bopping around the city without smartphones? Absolutely。 It's a fluffy fantasy that might not hit as hard for people not from that precise demo, but I couldn't put it down and had an absolute blast。 Do I feel narcissistic about how much I loved this book about wealthy, white, suburban Connecticut teenagers bopping around the city without smartphones? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 SPOILER ALERT I either absolutely adore Morgan Matson books or I hate them, and I was so sorry to discover that this one wasn’t for me。 Based on the synopsis alone I had high hopes for this book。 Two girls。 NYC。 Friendship。 It all happened one night。 All things I adore in books。 However with a plot that seemed to drag on, and a completely unnecessary side plot, and bad cameos from her other books, this one wasn’t the best! I’m not even sure how she got Teris POV into the book。 You would think an SPOILER ALERT I either absolutely adore Morgan Matson books or I hate them, and I was so sorry to discover that this one wasn’t for me。 Based on the synopsis alone I had high hopes for this book。 Two girls。 NYC。 Friendship。 It all happened one night。 All things I adore in books。 However with a plot that seemed to drag on, and a completely unnecessary side plot, and bad cameos from her other books, this one wasn’t the best! I’m not even sure how she got Teris POV into the book。 You would think an editor would have kicked that out somewhere between drafts! I mean come on it wasn’t even the same genre as the rest of the book! It just took away from the YA coming of age story we were all expecting。 I also CANNOT BELIEVE that Morgan would do this to us! I mean why would Amy and Roger not be TOGETHER!!!!! And if they weren’t supposed to end up together why would she write a YA romance book about it in the first place! This honestly just seemed beyond cruel to her readers, who she made fall in love with them in the first place! We at least deserve an explanation which wasn’t given to us in the book。 If your going to break up an adored YA couple at least give us an explanation as to why! I’m also a little salty about the Beckett cameo。 I mean Stevie and Beckett seemed so cute together! Why did she have to break them up! I was really gunning for them。 Overall this book wasn’t all awful。 I really did enjoy the girls character arcs, no matter how short they were。 I did love Stevie’s family。 Although her issues with her dad I felt were resolved too quickly。 Cary was fun! I liked him! I’m sorry to leave such a negative review, I just needed to get all of my frustrations out。 I do plan to read this again when I’ve calmed down, maybe in audio form, see if I like it better。 I’m just glad we didn’t get to see Emily and Frank, I swear if they don’t end up together, I would have been absolutely heartbroken。 。。。more

4。5 wonderful stars。 Long live theatre kid representation in YA hehe。 In all seriousness, what a delight this was to read。 The storyline asks you to suspend your disbelief, but I regard the somewhat unrealistic plot as if it were a Disney Channel movie (i。e。 lean into it!)。 Definitely recommend -- as I would any other Morgan Matson book :--)

I've been so looking forward to this next installment of Morgan Matson's books。 Not only are they really fun to read, but I love how rounded Matson's characters feel, and the cameos other characters make。 This was such a fun read, and I can't believe how much happened within 1 evening! Reader beware, here there be spoilersSo, after last month when I marathoned all of Matson's previous works for either a first or second time, and most of them ended up even better than I thought they had the first time around, I was extremely excited for this book to come out and started listening to it on audio the day it came out。 And now at the end of it? There's a lot I like about it, one major/minor thing that I didn't, and one thing I'm just kind of okay on。 So I'm going to go through like Reader beware, here there be spoilersSo, after last month when I marathoned all of Matson's previous works for either a first or second time, and most of them ended up even better than I thought they had the first time around, I was extremely excited for this book to come out and started listening to it on audio the day it came out。 And now at the end of it? There's a lot I like about it, one major/minor thing that I didn't, and one thing I'm just kind of okay on。 So I'm going to go through like an itemized list in each category what I thought was the good, the bad, and the just okay。THE GOOD-I think this is Matson's best book with friendship as a main theme, surpassing even TUE and especially SYBG in that regard。 I love Kat and Stevie's friendship and how realistic it felt。 They weren't always on the same side and could and did say some really nasty things to each other, particularly in the first part of the book, even if it was stuff that the other girl needed to hear。 I liked how that friendship was truly tested over the course of the novel and the girls seemed to come out stronger。-I liked Kat and Stevie both as characters and their individual arcs and learning about who they are and what they want and why they were doing the things they were doing。 Between the two, I did like Stevie more, because I related to her story more and we share a lot of similar personality traits。 She had such a compelling story and I think her growth over the course of the book was amazing, and I liked the family element that Matson used Stevie for。 Kat was a good character too, less immediately likable than Stevie in that she was more outwardly selfish, but she does grow and get past that and also becomes a more well rounded character。 We really get to see both of these girls at their best and their worst and I loved that。 It felt very real。-I liked Kat's relationship with Cary, I thought they were cute。 I also just liked Cary as a character, but I thought he and Kat had a good, believable chemistry given the short time they spent together。 They're cute and I have no complaints about Cary as a character or love interest。-The setting! I just love books set in big cities, and New York is just a really good playground for "big city" books。-I love how much theater was stuffed into this and how both Kat and Stevie are theater kids。THE MEH-For fans of SYBG, Beckett Hughes actually has a decently sized role in this book。-There was a lot of plot convenience for stuff that happens in this book, during Kat and Stevie's adventures, yes, but also for the subplot as well。 You're just going to have to suspend your disbelief。 I will say (barring one scene in New York), I never had a problem stretching my belief for the Kat/Stevie segments。 On the other hand。。。-Terri's plot。 While I didn't hate it, it absolutely did not need to be here and lowkey messed with the flow of the book。 Not to mention just how much you have to suspend your disbelief for those segments。 What helped me get through those sections (and really all of the more suspension of disbelief moments) was to look at this like an 80s film or something adjacent to it。 I think it helps the medicine go down a little better。THE BAD-Is it fair to say that the absolute worst part of this book is a cameo that in the grand scheme of how this novel is constructed/told doesn't matter is the worst part of the book? Maybe, maybe not。 But I'm here to do it anyway。 Also, for those of you who care, this is where the spoilers get really bad, so you might want to just skip this section entirely and go to the conclusion。-So I'm just going to rip this bandaid off really quick: Amy and Roger are broken up in the timeline of the Matsonverse by the time TMHT takes place。 So broken up, in fact, she's engaged to someone else。 Who, you ask? Lucien, Roger's ex's brother from A&R's Epic Detour。 And I for the life of me, cannot fathom what brought Matson to this choice。 A&R is one of her most popular books, second only to SYBG and had been published exactly 11 years before TMHT。-Honestly, the more I think about this, the sadder and almost。。。 angrier it makes me? Because one can argue that it's realistic and of course Amy & Roger didn't stay together (or hell, maybe they never even GOT together at the end of their book officially), but I don't read contemporary romance for realism。 I just wanted to know that two characters who I cared about and cared about the relationship of, were still happy and in love。 THAT'S what I wanted。 Not Amy with fucking Lucien。 Roger Sullivan deserved better。 Amy Curry deserved better。 And honestly, the readers and fans of A&R deserved better than that。 And maybe I wouldn't be as bitter about it if it didn't just come out of complete nowhere, because everything in all of Matson's other books make it seem like Amy is with Roger, all of her other cameos are either explicitly with Roger or she's backpacking with him。 So WHY is she just randomly with Lucien all of a sudden? Thanks, I hate it, you can have it back。CONCLUSIONOverall, TMHT is a fun, light, coming of age story between two best friends and how important the bonds we make in high school can impact us and how much we still have to figure out at that age。 Besides some minor suspension of disbelief problems, and a truly horrendous cameo that honestly makes Matson's debut look worse and have less rereadability (bc why would you want to if you know how the story ends), I think Kat and Stevie's story is a wonderful time and fun。 。。。more

this was SO FUN to read。 i loved the pacing, the characters, the little details that MM always weaves into her novels。 kat and stevie were so life-like and i immediately fell in love with their dynamic, personalities and the insane night they had。 i was screaming quite a bit when i got to see beckett (from sybg) and amy (from a&red), two characters that i absolutely love, and it was so incredible to be able to see them grow up。 (also, did not see the big amy change coming, but i genuinely loved this was SO FUN to read。 i loved the pacing, the characters, the little details that MM always weaves into her novels。 kat and stevie were so life-like and i immediately fell in love with their dynamic, personalities and the insane night they had。 i was screaming quite a bit when i got to see beckett (from sybg) and amy (from a&red), two characters that i absolutely love, and it was so incredible to be able to see them grow up。 (also, did not see the big amy change coming, but i genuinely loved it。) 。。。more

Thank you Simon & Schuster and Goodreads for the advanced readers copy and exchange for an honest review。This book gave me major Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist vibes, but set in the 90s。 I loved the idea of taking these 2 high school seniors and removing their main source of communication, their cellphones。 This lack of a device that everyone has become so reliant on helped up the tension and confusion of the crazy scenarios that were about to play out in the rest of the novel。 While many of t Thank you Simon & Schuster and Goodreads for the advanced readers copy and exchange for an honest review。This book gave me major Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist vibes, but set in the 90s。 I loved the idea of taking these 2 high school seniors and removing their main source of communication, their cellphones。 This lack of a device that everyone has become so reliant on helped up the tension and confusion of the crazy scenarios that were about to play out in the rest of the novel。 While many of the escapades Kat, Stevie, and even Teri, face in the novel are completely unrealistic, I still found myself rooting for them to keep pushing through and making it to their destinations (Grand Central Station and Teri's house) without getting caught in the lies they told their parents。As a former theatre kid, I really related to both the struggles of Kat (the theatre diva who feels entitled to the lead roles), Stevie (the unpolished gem who has the skills, but hasn't been able to reach her full potential), and Teri (the girl who so desperately wants to be seen as a competent actress and just make the cast list)。 I have been all of these girls at various points in my acting career and they were fleshed out in a believable way。 Especially, their struggles to determine if acting is something they want to pursue when they graduate and weighting the pros and cons, along with familial pressures to fill certain roles as they move into adulthood。 The friendship between Kat and Stevie was extremely believable and I wish I could've been a part of more of their chats to really feel like I was with them and have a better sense of their interactions together, since for the majority of the novel we see them separated and trying to reconnect。One of the things I struggled the most with while reading the book was how much everyone gave into Mr。 Campbell's god complex。 No director or teacher is perfect and I found it a little suspect that none of the people in the theatre program seemed to notice his glaring flaws until another character, a former student, points out his poor behavior。 That and the fact that this behavior was never brought to the school's attention, floored me。 I know my parents would have raised hell if I had a teacher or director treat students/actors in that way, and that was almost 15 years ago。While Kat and Stevie were captivating and the perfect foil leads for this novel, I desperately would have loved to know more about Teri and all of the shenanigans that occurred while she was wrangled into the babysitting job gone wrong。This was such as easy, fun, and light-hearted read that I think anyone middle school aged or older could fall in love with instantly。 While this may have been my first foray into Morgan Matson's books, I definitely do not think it will be my last。 。。。more

Even when one of them gets caught it's made to be this big deal, but 18 is legally an adult and you can do whatever you want at that age without parental consent。 I get that for the majority of the book the characters couldn't have been aged down but it just didn't make sense to me why the parents would be this big issue。Verdict: it was good, just not anything special。 。。。more

4。5 StarsThis book was so great! I have read a lot of contemporaries, but every time I pick up a Morgan Matson book, I am never disappointed, and Take Me Home Tonight is no exception! It had everything: humor, romance, hijinks, drama, and crime。 Sucks you right in, and keeps it coming until the end!The book starts off normal enough, with two friends, Stevie and Kat, awaiting the casting announcement for their Fall play, King Lear。 But, alas, the norm is disrupted when their Theater teacher says 4。5 StarsThis book was so great! It had everything: humor, romance, hijinks, drama, and crime。 Sucks you right in, and keeps it coming until the end!The book starts off normal enough, with two friends, Stevie and Kat, awaiting the casting announcement for their Fall play, King Lear。 But, alas, the norm is disrupted when their Theater teacher says he "needs more time" on it。 This sends panic through the group, but none more than Kat, who has played up this role as the most important thing for her Senior year。 And of course, she expects her best friend, Stevie, to feel the same。 But Stevie doesn't, and is focused on her own drama in the form of her Dad canceling on her for her 18th birthday dinner。 Typical high school drama, and Matson could've just kept it that way。 But nope, Kat and Stevie are off to magical New York City (being from Connecticut) to try and salvage both Stevie's birthday night and (secretly) Kat's chances at her "once-in-a-senior-year" role。 What could go wrong?Matson focuses on the relationship between Stevie and Kat in such a realistic and beautiful way。 My best friends in high school were my everything, and that is what Kat and Stevie have, as well。 But growing up sometimes means growing apart, and the girls realize this in a very inconvenient, stuck in NYC kind of way。 They have to fall apart to come back together, and the events that plague the girls (some good, some bad, and some outrageous) all add up to develop a deeper friendship than they had before。The supporting cast in this book is a delight, and if you're a Matson fan, you will see some returning characters from her previous books, so keep a sharp eye out for that。 Within these supporting roles, both Kat and Stevie have some really great friends and family, and Matson takes the opportunity to explore, albeit lightly, how love works romantically and familiarly。 But the love one has for their friends is the overarching focus, and each encounter leads, in a way, to Kat and Stevie's relationship。Now, all that makes this book sound very serious, and it is in some parts, but this is a plot filled with crazy, the kind that you always read about happening in NYC, but even more crazy (at least to me) then I think actually happens。 I loved it though; I think that the over-the-top escapades helped highlight the realistic, more grounded instances within the book。 Also, they were just so fun to read about。 And live yourself (I can't be the only person who dreams of the fantasy of NYC, no?)。Fast-paced, twisty, and turney - Kat and Stevie's adventure through one New York night will keep you entertained and glued to the page (oh and their friend Teri has some very crazy stuff happen to her that takes place simultaneously - all I'm going to say)。 Take Me Home Tonight by Morgan Matson is a real winner, and might just be one of my favorite of her books so far。 。。。more

Morgan Matson’s latest work takes readers on a wild ride through Manhattan and elsewhere。 Like Manhattan, the story is busy: it’s visual, constantly in motion。 The bustling scenes happen so quickly and move on to something new, something equally outrageous and entertaining。 Matson has given readers a modern slapstick comedy à la Bringing Up Baby with hilarious characters and witty dialogue that’s so smart and lots of fun。 The incongruous on the road scenes with Teri and the kids are just as extr Morgan Matson’s latest work takes readers on a wild ride through Manhattan and elsewhere。 Like Manhattan, the story is busy: it’s visual, constantly in motion。 The bustling scenes happen so quickly and move on to something new, something equally outrageous and entertaining。 Matson has given readers a modern slapstick comedy à la Bringing Up Baby with hilarious characters and witty dialogue that’s so smart and lots of fun。 The incongruous on the road scenes with Teri and the kids are just as extreme, if not more so。 Readers may wonder how on earth these wildly different storylines could possibly fit together。 But Matson makes it work through her careful, meticulously executed plot。 Matson also manages to weave in characters from her previous stories。 Readers are offered brief glimpses into the lives of Amy, Roger and Lucien from her debut novel, which will whet the appetites of readers who enjoy following her works。 Besides the romps, Matson provides readers with thoughtful insights into fallen idols, self-knowledge, family relationships and friendship。 This is an excellent work, and for readers like me, we’ll be on the lookout for whatever this talented writer produces next。 。。。more

I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Morgan Matson that I heard about through my TLA conference。 This book is Adventures in Babysitting meets Serendipity meets High School Musical。 Having a senior and sophomore in high school very involved with the theater program, so much of this book rang true and it was a delight to read and make connections while reading it。 I loved the three story lines that were woven together and how you became so engrossed in one that you almost forgot about the others, esp I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Morgan Matson that I heard about through my TLA conference。 This book is Adventures in Babysitting meets Serendipity meets High School Musical。 Having a senior and sophomore in high school very involved with the theater program, so much of this book rang true and it was a delight to read and make connections while reading it。 I loved the three story lines that were woven together and how you became so engrossed in one that you almost forgot about the others, especially Teri, until the book switched gears with "meanwhile back in。。。" and you remembered that she was having her own issues。 I think this book is definitely geared toward a certain demographic but when that specific type of reader picks this up, they will love it from the beginning! 。。。more
