Incredible book! A must-read for every follower of Christ。

Read slowly over a year - so many good thoughts, can't imagine someone doing a better job of explaining who God has revealed himself as in scripture。 Definitely a must read。 Read slowly over a year - so many good thoughts, can't imagine someone doing a better job of explaining who God has revealed himself as in scripture。 Definitely a must read。 。。。more

This is a wonderful book, full of wisdom。 Packer expertly tackles a great many subjects with expertise and precision。 It well and truly is a "book for travelers"。 As such, Packer, for the most part, keeps any -isms to the margins, and deals with the subject in a way that applies to all Christian's, regardless of denomination。 It presents a high and mighty view of a loving God, and firmly presents the gospel。 Well done。 This is a wonderful book, full of wisdom。 Packer expertly tackles a great many subjects with expertise and precision。 It well and truly is a "book for travelers"。 As such, Packer, for the most part, keeps any -isms to the margins, and deals with the subject in a way that applies to all Christian's, regardless of denomination。 It presents a high and mighty view of a loving God, and firmly presents the gospel。 Well done。 。。。more

This is a truly wonderful book full of some really insightful thoughts。 I really struggled to get through it though, and spent a long time anxiously rereading the same sections and trying to retain what I had learned。 If you’re struggling too, I highly recommend doing this book in a group and using the excellent study guide now available。

I was very steadied by J。 I 。 Packer's work , Knowing God。 I read it over many months and I was nourished by reading about the character of God revealed in Scripture。 I am challenged again with a vision to make knowing God better a primary pursuit。 It seems so important to read right now。 I was very steadied by J。 I 。 Packer's work , Knowing God。 I read it over many months and I was nourished by reading about the character of God revealed in Scripture。 I am challenged again with a vision to make knowing God better a primary pursuit。 It seems so important to read right now。 。。。more

This is definitely a book to keep on the shelf。 As a straight through read it is loaded。 I would like to read it again, but it smaller chunks so that I can really study and understand the depth of the sections。 This would make a great group read。 JI Packer does what few are able to in my opinion - he paints a picture of God that makes me want what he has。

A Christian classic that is oh so worthy of re-visit after re-visit。 It is a re-centering read that reminds you in light of all there is to be read and thought about today in Christian circles that knowing God in Christ is the true priority of every human being。 Grateful for Packer’s life and his contribution through this work。 Also grateful for his deep love of the hymns of the faith that surface in every chapter of this book。

This book emphasizes a kind of overflowing emotional response that Christians should have as a reaction to knowing God。 While I can't dispute that that is the reality Christians should live in, it is not something that comes easily。 Far more familiar are the descriptions of erroneous attitudes and actions that distract modern Christians and dilute our experience。 That probably means I especially need to take lessons from this book, but that also made this a difficult book to read。This is a book This book emphasizes a kind of overflowing emotional response that Christians should have as a reaction to knowing God。 While I can't dispute that that is the reality Christians should live in, it is not something that comes easily。 Far more familiar are the descriptions of erroneous attitudes and actions that distract modern Christians and dilute our experience。 That probably means I especially need to take lessons from this book, but that also made this a difficult book to read。This is a book that can be reread periodically and never exhausted since it exhorts us to an ideal that we will never entirely achieve, so it will always present something more to aspire to。 。。。more

Just finishing this for the third time in the last ten years。 Should be re-read every four or five years。 It continues to equip to navigate doubts and life in a skeptical world。 #knowinggod

I am absolutely loving this so far, particularly the chapter with the illustration of the railroad switchboard。

Excellent。 Timely。 An important work of the 20th Century for Christian literature。

DeepThis is not a book that can be read briskly。 It takes time to read and reread and in doing so some things are still difficult to understand。 This I know, I am a finite creation trying to understand and infinite God who has given his all so that I may know him。 I can never grasp how greatly he loves me but I know he does。

Excellent in so many ways! This is a book that I wouldencourage any Christian to read, wherever they are in their walk with Christ。 It is both challenging and encouraging, and definitely one that can be read again and again。 I especially enjoyed the in-depth chapter on adoption / becoming a child of God。

So I was recommended this book by my mom whose church reading group had read this the year prior。 This is definitely a hard book to read, not something I would have typically picked up and 7 months ago this text wasn’t in my reading “comfort zone”。 Reading this felt like a journey, I read a paragraph or one section each day from Monday through Saturday (with Sundays being church) and it became part of my daily reading routine。 This book taught me numerous things, it was definitely a whole experi So I was recommended this book by my mom whose church reading group had read this the year prior。 This is definitely a hard book to read, not something I would have typically picked up and 7 months ago this text wasn’t in my reading “comfort zone”。 Reading this felt like a journey, I read a paragraph or one section each day from Monday through Saturday (with Sundays being church) and it became part of my daily reading routine。 This book taught me numerous things, it was definitely a whole experience and brought me closer to God。 In the last section of the book, I was reluctant to let this book go because I’ve been reading it for so long and I’ve grown fond of it, both the author’s message along with the detailed way he’s been explaining how to know God。 This was a journey, thank you Mr。 Packer。 。。。more

Fantastic。 A timeless classic, Packer engages the reader from the very first pages。 The chapter on adoption is outstanding。

Reader thoughts: This book got on my nerves for a few reasons。1, it assumed things about ALL Christian believers that I didn't think were true。 He might say something like, "We walk around, feeling guilty for our sin。。。。" and I'm thinking, "I don't。" He only did this once or twice, and I can't remember what it was exactly。2, The book is old。 None of his theological ideas are outdated (that I can remember), but his references were outdated。 Sure, we all know about WWII, but people these days don' Reader thoughts: This book got on my nerves for a few reasons。1, it assumed things about ALL Christian believers that I didn't think were true。 He might say something like, "We walk around, feeling guilty for our sin。。。。" and I'm thinking, "I don't。" He only did this once or twice, and I can't remember what it was exactly。2, The book is old。 None of his theological ideas are outdated (that I can remember), but his references were outdated。 Sure, we all know about WWII, but people these days don't necessary remember the 60s and 70s。 He had very few references。 Some of his wordings and phrasings seemed old。3, The most annoying part was that the book seemed to quote more hymns than it did Bible verses。 Word for word, there were probably more hymn quotes than Bible quotes。 You can't argue stuff about God using a hymn。 No, the only authority on God's character and being is the Bible。 If you can't make your point without a hymn, you don't have a point。 You can use hymns to supplement or support verses, especially if the hymn is based off a verse, but not to replace a verse。4, He needed transitions。 I wasn't sure how he got from one point to another all the time。 Maybe listening to the book made this harder。 Still, at the end of the book, he's like, "So, through these chapters, I showed you x, and y, and z。。。。" I'm thinking, "No, you didn't。 Is that what those chapters were supposed to prove?"The good parts。。。。I really liked the section on adoption: God adopting us as His children。 Packer argues that this act of adoption might be more important than the act of justification, but I'm not sure。 He did convince me that our adoption deserves more attention than it has now。I do think we de-emphasize knowing God in many ways, but we don't completely ignore the idea。 Many Christians have figured out that Christianity has a large relational aspect to it。 We're not just soldiers under orders expected to march and serve。 We are children with a loving Father Who wants us to work together as a family。Writer Listener thoughts: I wonder if transitions are more necessary when we are speaking and listening than when we are reading and writing。 When a pastor has a clear outline for me to follow, I can hear his main points much easier。 When I'm just listening and piecing together the sermon without an outline, it is easier for me to get lost。Then again, I'm a visual learner, and perhaps auditory learners don't need the visual cues。 In that case, do speakers/narrators need to emphasize certain transitions more clearly for listeners? Or should the writer of a speech be aware that the connections between main points need to be clearer and emphasized in the words he/she uses? 。。。more

Many of the books that I read are based upon recommendations given by 9 Marks。 For the last 2 years, I have read every book which they suggested to read。 This year, their recommendations were not as extensive as in the past。 However, Mark Dever did mention that one book he reads every year is "Knowing God。" I decided if Dever reads this book every year, maybe I should read it。When I first began to read this book, I was underwhelmed as I thought it was just another theological book teaching the a Many of the books that I read are based upon recommendations given by 9 Marks。 For the last 2 years, I have read every book which they suggested to read。 This year, their recommendations were not as extensive as in the past。 However, Mark Dever did mention that one book he reads every year is "Knowing God。" I decided if Dever reads this book every year, maybe I should read it。When I first began to read this book, I was underwhelmed as I thought it was just another theological book teaching the attributes of God。 As I continued to read, I understood that Packer was leading the reader down a path。 He leads the reader down the path of the glory of God。 In so doing, Packer also leads the reader to an understanding of his own inadequacy as compared to God。 The reader comes to understand why God is God。 He also realizes why he should know God more intimately。 One chapter in this book is worth the price of the book and the time spent in reading it。 Packer gives great detail in explaining the blessing of being a son of God。 This understanding of the God as our Father leads to a closer relationship with God。 Also, this knowledge causes the reader to consider his prayer life。 The reader is able to understand that prayer is a child coming to his father in search of good things。 Just as an earthly father will address the needs of his children, so too will the heavenly Father address the needs of his sons and daughters。At the conclusion, I think I am going to begin the practice of Mark Dever。 I think "Knowing God" will be included in a list of books which I will read every year。 。。。more

The Christian life in less than 200 pages。 This book is a classic。 Honestly it was one that I had put on my shelf and allowed it to gather dust。 I read other things instead。 I wish that I had read this long ago。 Especially as a baby Christian。 The pursuit of the Christian should be to know God better。 This is not in an academic a know it all sense but this is to find joy in that relationship。 It is to identify with the Psalmist。 I cannot recommend this book enough it may seem elementary but it i The Christian life in less than 200 pages。 This book is a classic。 Honestly it was one that I had put on my shelf and allowed it to gather dust。 I read other things instead。 I wish that I had read this long ago。 Especially as a baby Christian。 The pursuit of the Christian should be to know God better。 This is not in an academic a know it all sense but this is to find joy in that relationship。 It is to identify with the Psalmist。 I cannot recommend this book enough it may seem elementary but it is a reset that will impact how you read the Bible。 。。。more

I have been reading this book for over 40 years and next to the Bible this book has had the greatest impact on my life I love the plain truth backed up by scriptures。 I think very serious student of the Bible and very preacher of the gospel should have a copy。

There is a large difference between knowing about God and Knowing God。 Packer calls us to embrace the reality behind the doctrines of the faith and not to see the Bible as only information but as God speaking and wooing us Need to reread this。

A must read for every believer。 Again and again。

After hearing so many good things about this book, I came away disappointed。 I found it to be dense and wordy; many things that could have been said once were instead dissected to an impressive degree that left me bored。 There were one or two instances where Packer ends a section with a question to the effect of “how could anyone who is not moved by this (whatever he was explaining) claim to know Christ?” I found such questions to be legalistic and unfair。 While I may have been misinterpreting h After hearing so many good things about this book, I came away disappointed。 I found it to be dense and wordy; many things that could have been said once were instead dissected to an impressive degree that left me bored。 There were one or two instances where Packer ends a section with a question to the effect of “how could anyone who is not moved by this (whatever he was explaining) claim to know Christ?” I found such questions to be legalistic and unfair。 While I may have been misinterpreting his intentions, words are important and his tainted my impressions of the rest of the book。 However, due to his excellent treatment of Romans 8 in the final chapter, I would bump this up to 2。5 stars。 。。。more
