Summary

'Crime? What crime?。。。My killing a loathsome, harmful louse, a filthy old moneylender woman。。。and you call that a crime?'

Raskolnikov, a destitute and desperate former student, wanders through the slums of St Petersburg and commits a random murder without remorse or regret。 He imagines himself to be a great man, a Napoleon: acting for a higher purpose beyond conventional moral law。 But as he embarks on a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a suspicious police investigator, Raskolnikov is pursued by the growing voice of his conscience and finds the noose of his own guilt tightening around his neck。 Only Sonya, a downtrodden prostitute, can offer the chance of redemption。

This vivid translation by David McDuff has been acclaimed as the most accessible version of Dostoyevsky's great novel, rendering its dialogue with a unique force and naturalism。 This edition also includes a new chronology of Dostoyevsky's life and work。

Too gloomy, I could feel the cold weather and the weathered buildings which supposed to account for a good writing but not necessary a good personal experience with the book。 I felt like evey single character was just miserable, experiencing a different type of nihilism, an unrealized one maybe forced by the living condition at the time and place。 Too detailed you would expect at least a brilliant symbolism backing it up but nope! Not enough。 And the prose is a genius only once in a while to bear with it。 I made it half way through till I felt like I kept reading only for the book reputation。 Raskolnikov is just going in circles for so long till I stopped paying attention to him。 That's right he was too tormented by his lack of actual punishment that it really got to me, I couldn't take it anymore。 Isn't that the merit of the story anyway? 。。。more

The protagonist is complex and the environment within this book really sets the dark tone of this awesome book。

Basically a good one, yet its flaws are obvious。 The biggest problem of it is that the author does not organize the plot well。 The intriguing part is—and only is—the last 1/4 part of this whole big novel! The plot goes so slowly that it is hardly absorbing, and I nearly gave it up。 However, it should be noted that the seemingly boring psychological analysis, which takes up a great proportion in the novel, is not useless; rather, it has become somewhat a style of Dostoyevsky。

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️A little story about little lives in 19th century Russia, that examines how much meaning we can sometimes find in our random and meaningless existence。Three things I learned:1。 When it comes to self-justification of our choices and fate, we all probably consider ourselves special and different。2。 Our inner lives are mostly consumed by the desperation of satisfying fictitious external expectations, equally in 1866 as in 2021。3。 In our worst moment Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️A little story about little lives in 19th century Russia, that examines how much meaning we can sometimes find in our random and meaningless existence。Three things I learned:1。 When it comes to self-justification of our choices and fate, we all probably consider ourselves special and different。2。 Our inner lives are mostly consumed by the desperation of satisfying fictitious external expectations, equally in 1866 as in 2021。3。 In our worst moments of doubt we so easily forget that our present self and our present thoughts may later on seem completely misguided and false。 Humans are terrible self-critics。Who should read it:Anyone frustrated in their place in society, which is probably all of us to some degree。 This book can be cathartic。Favorite quote:“Mere existence had always been too little for him; he had always wanted more。 Perhaps it was just because of the strength of his desires that he had thought himself a man to whom more was permissible than to others。” 。。。more

Querer soportar el sufrimiento, incluso vivir para ello; tanto así, que si no se sufre no se vive, pareciera que no se es merecedor de la vida。 Que crueldad, pero es el eterno castigo del hombre, el eterno crimen que arremete sobre sí mismo。Wanting to endure suffering, even living for it; so much so that if you do not suffer you do not live, it seems that you are not worthy of life。 What cruelty, but it is the eternal punishment of man, the eternal crime that he attacks on himself。

Matt Hall

good story, solid audiobook。
