Summary

The San Magnolia Republic has long been under attack by unmanned weapons from the neighboring Empire。 Against this onslaught, the Republic has also deployed similar weapons, narrowly avoiding great loss of life and impending disaster-or at least that's how it seemed。

The truth is that it has never been possible to have no casualties。 Young men and women drawn from the Republic's supposedly non-existent 86th district are organized into the "86 unit" and then ordered to pilot the "unmanned weapons" before heading to battle。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really honestly didn't think I'd be so exhilarated reading a novel。。。 maybe it's the sort of novels I typically read? or maybe it's the style of writing。 I was completely absorbed and devoured the book in a day。It also dips into introspection and (if am I allowed to call it) philosophy sometimes, which I have a bias to, and so yes, this was absolutely an amazing novel。 Not to mention the godlike art。。。 although the afterword really gave me whiplash。。。 yes, Shirabii's art and garter belts。。。 we I really honestly didn't think I'd be so exhilarated reading a novel。。。 maybe it's the sort of novels I typically read? or maybe it's the style of writing。 I was completely absorbed and devoured the book in a day。It also dips into introspection and (if am I allowed to call it) philosophy sometimes, which I have a bias to, and so yes, this was absolutely an amazing novel。 Not to mention the godlike art。。。 although the afterword really gave me whiplash。。。 yes, Shirabii's art and garter belts。。。 well。。。 Anyway, the drawings of the mechs (I especially liked the design of the Lowe and the Juggernaut) so finely-detailed, really helped flesh out the world for me。 I've always had troubles imagining this sorta thing no matter how elaborate the description, but the art made it so much more imposing for me。The themes explored are neat, and the characters are all distinct and have a strong sense of realism about them, which made whatever trials or interactions they even more poignant。 In particular I liked Raiden and Theo, but the rest were interesting to read about as well。 The dialogues were very interesting; the critiques of democracy and the folly of mankind were I think well-conveyed。 I'm not sure, is it the reliance on dialogue light novels use that make the characters feel a lot more real? I felt emotional when the characters were; in essence, I was quite immersed reading this book。 The things they did and the way they interacted with one another。。。 they were all conveyed skillfully and artistically by the author。It had a believable conclusion and the development of the characters was very enjoyable to read, so I'm satisfied with the entirety of the book。 The fantastical (futuristic。。?) ideas written about in the book were an absolute joy to read and imagine, and Asato's writing helps you really imagine the scene vividly, although I do find it strange that I'm so winded after reading this book。。。 It was a strangely nerve-wrecking experience。 But I'm glad to have finally read it; it was an amazing book that basically checked all of the things I love (unfortunately)。 I can't wait to see these characters again in the next volume。 。。。more

Inspired by real world countries (and while the book is only hinting at which countries, one can figure it out), this takes place in a fictional world which has been plunged into a war versus replicating machines using Artificial Intelligence。The story has elements of humanity's worst aspects。 While still showing humanity's best aspects。 However it's not the "main focus", as the books are a "boy meets girl" story。 Nonetheless, it's a good read, and I'll be reading the rest as well。 It's an inter Inspired by real world countries (and while the book is only hinting at which countries, one can figure it out), this takes place in a fictional world which has been plunged into a war versus replicating machines using Artificial Intelligence。The story has elements of humanity's worst aspects。 While still showing humanity's best aspects。 However it's not the "main focus", as the books are a "boy meets girl" story。 Nonetheless, it's a good read, and I'll be reading the rest as well。 It's an interesting world, with a spin that has me involved。 。。。more

Almost wish it ended here。And that’s not a bad thing or at least I don’t know if it is yet。 It was refreshing to read a story that felt entirely standalone。 There was a beginning, middle, and end。 The End is a perfect ending。 If there was never another entry in the series, I’d be satisfied because that’s how good it was。 Race, war, mechs, politics and v some light romance。 In a medium where everything is isekai or bordering that in order to officially get translated, this was an amazing change o Almost wish it ended here。And that’s not a bad thing or at least I don’t know if it is yet。 It was refreshing to read a story that felt entirely standalone。 There was a beginning, middle, and end。 The End is a perfect ending。 If there was never another entry in the series, I’d be satisfied because that’s how good it was。 Race, war, mechs, politics and v some light romance。 In a medium where everything is isekai or bordering that in order to officially get translated, this was an amazing change of pace。The mech designs are fantastic too。My only complaint with the story is it really could have used a glossary。 The author tosses so many races and terms and nations at you that it is difficult to keep track of。 And early on, because of this terminology, I somehow missed that they’re fighting against an “Evil Empire” that is already dead and I don’t recall finding how they know that or where it was mentioned。 Just suddenly I picked up on they’re fighting AI that was still following their final orders。I’ll fully admit that by the end, I still don’t get the racial politics or the Five Hued Flag or the importance of any of that。 I just know that Alba have silver hair, they invited other cultures in, eventually reduced said cultures to less than people。 It’s a weird disconnect the author failed to properly get across。 。。。more

"Their fate was to die in an unknown corner of a battlefield, discarded like tools that had been used up。。。, without a grave to rest in or a name。。。" The tone is depressing and that feeling never quite goes away。 The novel would be too overwhelming if it was all despair。 It contains all too brief moments of respite too, which serve as good breaks between the action。 Plus it makes the gut punch of the reality of war hit that much harder。 The ones fighting in this war is the Spearhead squadron, the 86, the ones that are forced to do the republics' fighting。 They are oppressed victims of the Republic but they don't act like it。 They don't fight for the nation or lament their position but rather take control of the part of their lives they can change。 "Even if you have no choice but to walk the gallows, you can still choose how you're gonna climb the steps。" That's what makes the 86 endearing。 Lastly is the main character Lena, she's the squadron's handler。 But she's far away from the action, as all officers of the republic are。 She bares no ill feeling towards the 86, and actively wants to make their jobs just a bit easier。 She's a naive idealist, and that mindset of hers is challenged many times。 And while she isn't the person responsible for their oppression, shes still a part of the system that is。 "You're blatantly accepting what's being done to us by sitting there like you're entitled to comfort!" I love the difficult reality of this world and Asato Asato shows there is no easy answers for any of issues going on。 That leads to the world building, which I think the ground work laid is excellent。 From the sci-fi tech involved, to the enemies the squadron has to fight everything has enough detail for those that really want those aspects fleshed out。 Asato leaves plenty of room for expansion in the 86 universe。 In conclusion it's damn good。 And I didnt even mention the plot or the names of any of the other characters or any of the cool action sequences! But this is already turning into an essay。 10/10 I will be reading more 86 in the near future。 Glory to the fucking Spearhead Squadron! 。。。more

I've wanted to put my hands on this series for a long time, but never got the chance to properly buy it until now。 I think that lacked a little regarding character development and character stereotypes, but as an ongoing series I can't say that's a crime。 Inside the general lore and lacks of the manga/anime industry (which the Light Novels are closely related to), it's a really enjoyable experience。 I just ordered the second volume because it has a beautiful ending。 If you're into the anime stuf I've wanted to put my hands on this series for a long time, but never got the chance to properly buy it until now。 I think that lacked a little regarding character development and character stereotypes, but as an ongoing series I can't say that's a crime。 Inside the general lore and lacks of the manga/anime industry (which the Light Novels are closely related to), it's a really enjoyable experience。 I just ordered the second volume because it has a beautiful ending。 If you're into the anime stuff, you'll find this book is a must。 。。。more

I've had this book for a while but hadn't yet read it and now the anime adaptation is starting soon so I wanted to read it before that。 And hooo, I've seen plenty of praise for this and it didn't disappoint! Why do creators think putting quotes from their own characters at the start of a work makes it seem important? You literally wrote the quote, it's not like you're taking themes from a well-known work or person and putting your own spin on it you're just making yourself seem self-important。 So I didn't exactly go into Eighty-Six volume one with high hopes。 And I would like it to be noted that the ideas put forth by the book will not be revolutionary to many people, but it is still ultimately important, especially as discussions of racism are not too common coming from Japanese media, though they are becoming more so for a number of reasons someone more qualified than me (a white, Canadian anime fan who's never even visited japan) are more qualified to discuss。 I do also think that the quote is used better at the end of the story when it's given context rather than as an opener。 So in brief, Volume 1 of Eighty-Six follows two primary "characters" Vladilena (Lena) Milizé (or Mirizé as she's noted in the upcoming anime credits), and The Spearhead squadron who are a group of characters rather than a single PoV。 Lena is an Alba, which is to say she's as white as white can be, right down to her silver hair and eyes。 The Spearhead Squadron is a group of young people (mid to late teens) who are what the book refers to at Colorata, or literally people of color。 Though the color part is a little more literal than real world races, with groups sometimes having fantastical eye and hair colors and being described as more tan than the Alba though real proper dark skinned representation appears to be missing。。。 again someone who isn't as white as the driven snow would be much more equipped to talk about Japan's colorism issues which might be at play for why none of the characters, at least in how they are depicted in the character art or descriptions here, are much darker than "tan" which is nebulous as all hell。 The Spearhead Squadron are a part of what is called the Eighty-Six which is to say former members of the Alban lead Republic of San Magnolia who were removed from polite society and forced to live within the 85 districts outside of the main body of the republic in the 1st district。 All colorata were put there about 10 years ago as of the start of the book, kept in forced labor camps and many of them forced to fight on the front lines against the neighboring Empire's automated drone army。 Stripped of their citizenship and personhood the Republic has dubbed their fight one without casualties。 Lena is a handler, which means she works with an assigned unit of Eighty-Six as they man mechanical drones by resonating with them, allowing her to speak directly into their ears and in extreme situations offers her the ability to directly link all her senses with them。 It is at its core a simple story, and the writing is nothing too impressive, though not too simplistic, like many light novels the target audience is likely teens and the writing is definitely nothing too complex as a result。 Though I struggled with quite a few of the combat scenes as we were introduced to many names of different types of automated drones with little to no proper descriptions of them, I also admit to struggling with highly technical writing which the combat portions sometimes dipped into。 However, I don't feel these are big issues with the book as the core of the story is not about the physical war。 Eighty-Six volume one is ultimately a story about racism and while it doesn't have a particularly nuanced take the book isn't too clumsy or precious about it either。 There is in fact at least one thing it managed to address that surprised me, which is that allyship without acknowledging and facing your own privilege is ultimately worthless。 A notion many people struggle with and one I was not expecting from a book that is otherwise not particularly delicate。 The book does struggle under the weight of some of its concepts and characters, the Spearhead Squadron are an ensemble cast and while Shin is ultimately the focus character within the squadron we get many PoVs from the various members and are thrown many names and concepts that are tough to try and memorize, or justify attempting to memorize as many of them are killed off between chapters and with little to no emotional payoff。 The names that are memorable are all likable in their own way and do grow into their own a bit in the limited space they are given。 Lena and Shin walk out with the clearest image of who they are but I at least can name a few other characters whose basic concepts I managed to retain from start to finish。 Most big moments aren't really given the room they need to breathe to really sink in and a few of the "twists" are obvious from a mile away, that being said I did genuinely want to know what would happen next for our seemingly doomed rag-tag group and Shin's emotional journey while a little rushed is ultimately given a satisfying ending。 Without diving into spoiler territory the ending felt the most rushed of all, alluding to events it would have been more impactful to actually see than to be told about as if from Lena's memory, however taking the second volume's synopsis into account it is possible we may end up getting to see some of the indicated events in the next volume instead。 Or at least I'm hoping。In the end volume one is a fun if a little rushed read that covers a topic not usually seen addressed with such brutal honesty from a Japanese medium, even if many of it's ideas will not be surprising to a lot of western readers (though let's be honest they may still be to a lot of us) and it was a fun ride with a likable protagonist and I'm eager to see where Lena and Shin go from here。 。。。more

There’s definitely an interesting social commentary to be found here even though this first book was a little weak

5 STARS。 THIS WILL PROBABLY BE MY FAVORITE BOOK OF 2020。INITIAL THOUGHTS:I REALLY liked this book。 Aside from a few issues, there were so many good things about it。 The plot, the characters, the vibe, THE ENDING。 All of it, just so good。 It was one of those books nearly impossible to put down。 I won’t go too in depth because I don’t want to spoil, but suffice it to say that this one was super good。 I go now to read the next one!(Personal Note: This book did have a bit of harsh language sometimes 5 STARS。 THIS WILL PROBABLY BE MY FAVORITE BOOK OF 2020。INITIAL THOUGHTS:I REALLY liked this book。 Aside from a few issues, there were so many good things about it。 The plot, the characters, the vibe, THE ENDING。 All of it, just so good。 It was one of those books nearly impossible to put down。 I won’t go too in depth because I don’t want to spoil, but suffice it to say that this one was super good。 I go now to read the next one!(Personal Note: This book did have a bit of harsh language sometimes。)REVIEW:THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING。 I was honestly skeptical because of the subject matter。 It was intriguing, but I was afraid they would just chalk it up to some people just being basic evil people。 This book wasn’t like that。 It’s a complex issue and was treated as such in this book。 It wasn’t just one group that had preconceived ideas and biases。 It was both the Alba and the Eighty-Six。 I also liked the parallels between it and World War II。 Things like the children experimentation and the internment camps。 This stuff was real。 Not just some made up plot。 I really liked the characters as well。 They all were complex and had different views。 And you get it。 All of the perspectives。 Also, it had so many great plot twists。I can’t seem to coherently communicate my thoughts, but basically THIS BOOK WAS REALLY GOOD。 My favorite part was definitely the ending, hands down。 It was pure amazingness。REREAD:Still AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!It’s so good to look at it and see how much these characters have matured so much in the later books。 I still love this book so much。 And I STILL want to scream in excitement at that ending!!!!! 。。。more
