Arkane Studios are masters of their craft。 Absolutely remarkable art design。

The first DISHONORED game received a quasi-artbook in THE DUNWALL ARCHIVES, a collection of in-game texts accompanied by some concept art and suchlike。 For the second game, Arkane Studios abandoned the idea of releasing all the in-game texts like that, and instead released an outright artbook。 This is a much, much richer book than THE DUNWALL ARCHIVES。 Instead of being presented as in in-universe text, it is filled with developer commentary。 Given that the most impressive part of this video game The first DISHONORED game received a quasi-artbook in THE DUNWALL ARCHIVES, a collection of in-game texts accompanied by some concept art and suchlike。 For the second game, Arkane Studios abandoned the idea of releasing all the in-game texts like that, and instead released an outright artbook。 This is a much, much richer book than THE DUNWALL ARCHIVES。 Instead of being presented as in in-universe text, it is filled with developer commentary。 Given that the most impressive part of this video game series is probably the incredible art design, this book plays to all the strengths of the series。 Impeccable art, developers explaining their artistic choices, dives into the genesis of the process, it’s all great stuff。The setting of the second game calls for more originality in design than the first, being an amalgamation of tropical cities like Havana and Barcelona, where Dunwall was very clearly a riff on London。 This tropical setting isn’t used so much in fantasy like this, so the developers clearly felt enlivened and liberated by exploring new artistic concepts。 Seeing their actual workflow for drawing inspiration from places like Cuba is enormously interesting。I’m particularly impressed by how much thought they paid not just to the geography of the fictional city, but the biome itself, the plants, the ways they could make trees and flora larger-than-life。 It really enhances the fantasy of the city。 The design philosophy, as outlined in the book, is very interesting。 There seems to be a real genuine commitment to artistic vision here, and it certainly shows。Harvey Smith, the creative director of the games, has explained how Arkane Studios was (pleasantly!) surprised by the vast female fanbase of the first game, and so he decided that with the second game they should commit to serving that fanbase specifically as well。 The above excerpts show examples of how that philosophy was alive in the artists as well。 They put it very well in saying that diversity, of all kinds, helps make the games richer and more interesting — as well as a greater experience for a greater number of people。The villain of the game being an artist really let the game’s artists themselves explore some great visual concepts。 I love how they specifically had that villain character’s artstyle evolve over the in-universe years。 The level of detail is stunning。 There really is such artistic commitment here。 My favourite object of the game is the timepiece。 What a delightfully evocative design。 The game’s setting (a quasi-1800s) allows for an interesting blend of fantasy designs with burgeoning modern technology。 I appreciate how off-kilter the vehicles look, a melding of fantasy and reality。I remember Josh Sawyer, developer of FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS, talking about how important it was to him to realistically design a setting in terms of where characters get their food, where they get their power, etc。 That commitment to verisimilitude really enhanced player investment in the game’s setting, it made it real, instead of a theme park。 It’s so much easier to get invested in a world (and thus the characters and story within it) when everything just fits together like that, when it all feels real。 The developers of DISHONORED really seem to understand that。 I love that some of the power for Karnaca is drawn from wind turbines; it’s such a great attention to detail per geography。 The wildlife of Karnaca are another great touch。 I love how much thought was put into the dreadful bloodlflies。 So much attention paid to luxury goods。 It really does feel like a lived-in world。 Ultimately this artbook does a great job highlighting the best aspects of the DISHONORED franchise。 If anything, even more developer commentary would have made it better, but the art alone is fantastic。 Three bloodflies, and some candied beetles。 。。。more

My favourite art book for my favourite video-game-I-can’t-play-because-it-gives-me-motion-sickness-but-I-love-it anyway。This is all beautiful paintings and design pics, not a lot of text。 (I would have liked more text, but the images are so good I’ll forgive the lack of written detail)。 Karnaca was an amazing achievement from the Arkane team。A 2020 re-read to reinforce some life goals and remind myself how far I’ve yet to go。 (Illustration-wise, not disposing-empresses-wise)

This is my favourite game so the book with all the art and more is just a plus to be honest。

This art is sooooooo pretty (T▽T)I'm already in love with this franchise for the work and details they put in their story and world building and I am so glad that they put as much an effort into the drawing。you can see all the little details hat make the world that they've built even more believable and lived-in。 This art is sooooooo pretty (T▽T)I'm already in love with this franchise for the work and details they put in their story and world building and I am so glad that they put as much an effort into the drawing。you can see all the little details hat make the world that they've built even more believable and lived-in。 。。。more

This is such a lovely book, especially if you hold Dishonored close to your heart。 I could probably look at the artwork for hours and still find new details, just as it is with the actual game。Thank you so much, Daf, for this book <3

I love this, and I recommend it for anyone who loves the games and wants to learn more about the world and the development of this universe。 It's a little different than The Dunwall Archives, since this one has a lot more concept art and designs, rather than excerpts from short stories, letter s and plays。 I loved it nonetheless。 I love this, and I recommend it for anyone who loves the games and wants to learn more about the world and the development of this universe。 It's a little different than The Dunwall Archives, since this one has a lot more concept art and designs, rather than excerpts from short stories, letter s and plays。 I loved it nonetheless。 。。。more

This is such a great video game art book, as the series Dishonored has such a distinct art style and game design。 The first game was incredible, and the second game is just as good。 Having this art book for it makes the game even more enjoyable, as you can see the concept art that changed over the course of production。Here's my full review along with images from the book。http://gamerssphere。com/the-art-of-di。。。 This is such a great video game art book, as the series Dishonored has such a distinct art style and game design。 The first game was incredible, and the second game is just as good。 Having this art book for it makes the game even more enjoyable, as you can see the concept art that changed over the course of production。Here's my full review along with images from the book。http://gamerssphere。com/the-art-of-di。。。 。。。more
