Pretty good thematic book。 Some pages are meant to be read more or less as comics, and others are way more detailed and resemble more to a typical book。 Of course it is done for those that are fanatics of the Marvel´s World and especially of Captain America。 As I have said, it is a really detailed book。 If you haven't read any of the comics, like me, you may find somethings a little bit confusing。 I am pretty sure that most people have only seen the movies, that is why you can find some similari Pretty good thematic book。 Some pages are meant to be read more or less as comics, and others are way more detailed and resemble more to a typical book。 Of course it is done for those that are fanatics of the Marvel´s World and especially of Captain America。 As I have said, it is a really detailed book。 If you haven't read any of the comics, like me, you may find somethings a little bit confusing。 I am pretty sure that most people have only seen the movies, that is why you can find some similarities explained in this book with the plot that the movies follow, but most times you get kinda lost because they don't show the same timeline。 In the end, it is a quite good and complete "biography" of Captain´s history and life。 Same, recommended if you are into this world。 。。。more

This was a detailed and comprehensive history of Captain America。 It explained some minor events that I wasn't familiar with and neatly clarified Cap's timeline。 However, some of those details contradicted each other, and some of the information is repeated a few times。 This was a detailed and comprehensive history of Captain America。 It explained some minor events that I wasn't familiar with and neatly clarified Cap's timeline。 However, some of those details contradicted each other, and some of the information is repeated a few times。 。。。more

I’m a big fan of Captain America, I have the entire collection on DVD-ROM and have read them (no minor task mind you) so when I saw that DK was publishing a definitive guide to Cap, I put it immediately on my wish list。 Even better, it was written by Matt Forbeck, a fellow gaming author and comrade in arms。DK has published some awesome books covering comic books。 Their encyclopedias for DC and Marvel are must-haves if you are running a superhero RPG or are just a fan。 This book falls in the same I’m a big fan of Captain America, I have the entire collection on DVD-ROM and have read them (no minor task mind you) so when I saw that DK was publishing a definitive guide to Cap, I put it immediately on my wish list。 Even better, it was written by Matt Forbeck, a fellow gaming author and comrade in arms。DK has published some awesome books covering comic books。 Their encyclopedias for DC and Marvel are must-haves if you are running a superhero RPG or are just a fan。 This book falls in the same category, concentrating on Captain America starting with the WWII era books up to the present。 I hope that DK is planning more of these hero-cetric books having read this one cover-to-cover。The very early material interested me the most – the pre-Marvel days when Captain America was punching out Adolph Hitler。 There was some material there I was not familiar with (these early works are not in my collection)。 Matt did an awesome job of bringing this forward for a new generation。As you read this book you come to grips that Captain America, Bucky, and Red Skull have been rebooted more times than the James Bond franchise。 A lot of people have picked up the shield over the years and I had forgotten that until I dove into this book。 Forbeck does an outstanding job of walking you through all of the incarnations of this fantastic hero。 I love the summery write-ups of key issues as well。From a writer’s perspective, I have to applaud Matt’s work here。 For those of you that have never written a book like this, with lead articles and a number of sidebars, it is a lot of logistical work。 Been there – done that。 Forbeck’s prose is tight and there’s a lot of consistency here which I’ll attribute to him (though I’m sure his editor played a role)。 Writing a tome like this is not an easy undertaking and keeping it organized had to be a big chore。 Of course we all benefited from it。I purchased it as a hard copy book so my grandson Trenton could enjoy it。 He took two nights of reading time to flip through every richly illustrated page。 It passed his muster and mine from a reading perspective。 There’s a lot of material here and the stories are all very interesting。 We get all of Cap’s allies and enemies detailed out, as well as how they have morphed over the decades。I give this five out of five stars if you are a Cap fan。 If not, this will get you up to speed pretty quick。 Pick it up and enjoy! 。。。more

Face front, true believers! DK was kind enough to send me a copy of the new Captain America, The Ultimate Guide to the First Avenger by Matt Forbeck, and this is a beautiful piece of work。I've collected a lot of Marvel Guides over the years, including the Marvel Encyclopedias。 DK always makes great, informative books, so I figured this would be no exception。 They kicked things off right with a great piece of art (the one seen above), and silver gilding on the pages。 I do love feeling of gilded p Face front, true believers! Well done, DK。 Well done, Matt Forbeck。 You've done the Marvel fandom proud。 。。。more

Captain America: The Ultimate Guide to the First Avenger。For the record; I have to be completely honest here。 As a child, I grew up living primarily through the lens of my own vivid imagination。 And, as a scrawny little guy who suffered from an array of physical and mental problems it was no surprise that out of all the various superheroes out there that I would become enamored with one who started out in a similar fashion。 I adored all things military and even strived to enlist only to be deni Captain America: The Ultimate Guide to the First Avenger。For the record; I have to be completely honest here。 As a child, I grew up living primarily through the lens of my own vivid imagination。 And, as a scrawny little guy who suffered from an array of physical and mental problems it was no surprise that out of all the various superheroes out there that I would become enamored with one who started out in a similar fashion。 I adored all things military and even strived to enlist only to be denied due to my health。 All that aside, there was something special at the core of the character that I could see and have held dear ever since。So, when Matt Forbeck reached out for anyone willing to review his latest work I happily volunteered。 Upon discovering it wasn’t one of his typical novels, I didn’t mind as much。 But, the second the words; “Captain America,” were mentioned, I was sold。 And, let me just say; I was not disappointed。Captain America: The Ultimate Guide to the First Avenger is a 200 page hardbound comprehensive guide to the history of one of Marvel’s most iconic figures。 It is written by award-winning author, game-designer, Father of 5 and Marvel expert/fan Matt Forbeck。 The book spans the long running history of Captain America, details many of his foes, friends and highlights note-worthy events/storylines。 While written as a title for young readers (9-12 years old), it manages to be enjoyable to children of all ages。The artwork in this book alone is worth the price on the cover。 Entire pages are devoted to some of the most memorable moments from Cap’s career。 Gorgeous two-page spreads are littered throughout like candy for the eyes。 And, at every turn we are presented with classic panels taken right from the very pages of his exciting exploits。Beginning with both the origins of the character’s creation and his fictional background we are given a foundation of who Steve Rogers is。 And, lets I forget there is one monumental element that must be pointed out; Stan Lee himself wrote the forward for this book。 The book moves on to track (almost) every element of Captain America’s run through the comics up to the present day。 There is so much detail here to delight a fan and interest even a casual reader。 Nothing is presented in such a way to be confusing to a young reader or someone unfamiliar, yet is done so in such a way that it doesn’t feel watered down or cheapened。A whole wealth of information is also to be found, on not just Cap, but also on his many allies, enemies and supporting characters from over the years。 Each character is given a detailed dossier on who they are, how they interacted with Cap and some of the more important story arcs they are a part of。Every decade of Cap’s time is broken down into its own section to highlight key issues and stories that happened – including important developments to Cap both behind the scenes of publication and on the pages。 A comprehensive timeline lists every major event to transpire throughout Cap’s long history in chronological order can be found early on in the book。 Not only is there a contents page to guide you from the beginning but a remarkable index exists in the back of the book to help you painlessly sort through the pages for references to a character or event with key entries highlighted in bold。The book is a gold mine of information that is a joy to simply read through。 Even if you have yet to see the movies or recently watched them there is so much insight to be found by giving this book some time。 You will not regret it, I can guarantee it。Captain America: The Ultimate Guide to the First Avenger scores 5 amazing alternative shields for Cap, out of 5 in my book。 Give it a try and let’s compare notes。 You might just learn something that will change the way you see the character in all his many depictions…*Special, Spoiler-Free Note: There is a lot they have gotten right in the movies that nobody may have noticed, especially recently。 Have Fun! 。。。more
