I noticed on the back cover of this volume, many of the raves pointed out the quality of the art。 I can see why。 The artwork is quite well done and David Finch deserves some credit for his talent。 His writing ability? It's not。 It merely tells a story, that isn't terrible, which highlights Finch's considerable artistic skills。 So expect nothing deep。 But it is a fun little jaunt, some good fights and great art。 。。。more

Set during the New 52 Universe, this volume contains a multi-part story by Jenkins and Finch。 Can't really give away the plot without revealing the end, but it's a little bit of a mystery, but overall just "meh"。 There is a new "villain", White Rabbit and I really hate her design。 It's so ridiculously pandering to the adolescent boys, her "costume" is right up there with Emma Frost's original design: simply lingerie。There's also a single issue that's a little more straightforward featuring the M Set during the New 52 Universe, this volume contains a multi-part story by Jenkins and Finch。 Can't really give away the plot without revealing the end, but it's a little bit of a mystery, but overall just "meh"。 There is a new "villain", White Rabbit and I really hate her design。 It's so ridiculously pandering to the adolescent boys, her "costume" is right up there with Emma Frost's original design: simply lingerie。There's also a single issue that's a little more straightforward featuring the Mad Hatter, followed by another single issue tie-in to Night of the Owls, giving at least a partial origin to Talon。The biggest attraction is that the Jenkins story is drawn by Finch。 His splash pages and particularly Batman are fantastic, but sometimes his "regular people", especially their faces look a little weird。Just barely makes it to 3 stars。 。。。more

The theme of fear was clear from the opening。 Having Batman's rogues escape without a good plot explanation was cyclical, but luckily there wasn't too much focus on it, instead on the new empowering formula they were taking。 Some issues: the new villain White Bunny a) could've been explored with more depth considering the whole descent into madness thing and b) definitely should have had more clothes on。 The other villains all seemed to be reading Bruce's monologue as well because they started t The theme of fear was clear from the opening。 Having Batman's rogues escape without a good plot explanation was cyclical, but luckily there wasn't too much focus on it, instead on the new empowering formula they were taking。 Some issues: the new villain White Bunny a) could've been explored with more depth considering the whole descent into madness thing and b) definitely should have had more clothes on。 The other villains all seemed to be reading Bruce's monologue as well because they started talking about fear for no real reason。 Also, Batman took a LOT of hits and I was left at times scratching my head at his superhuman nature。 Everything else was good though, with some typical fights and clean simple art。 。。。more

Gorgeous artwork, just stunning, this collection is just sublime。 The story got a little convoluted at times in Knight Terrors, however。 It was about a fear toxin that gets lost in the underbelly of Gotham and Batman has to take them down basically。 The dialogue between Batman and the Joker *cough* Clayface *cough* is hilarious and oh man, the White Rabbit, where can I get lingerie like that? Not the most enjoyable of the Batman lines that I've read, but it wasn't horrible。 I have to think about if I want to continue reading the whole series or not (I mean there's only 4 volumes so it wouldn't be too hard)。 Like the story was there, but it just felt kind of flat and the characters didn't feel as fleshed out。 Not the most enjoyable of the Batman lines that I've read, but it wasn't horrible。 I have to think about if I want to continue reading the whole series or not (I mean there's only 4 volumes so it wouldn't be too hard)。 Like the story was there, but it just felt kind of flat and the characters didn't feel as fleshed out。 。。。more

I'm very picky with my comics, DC/Marvel especially, so this was actually surprisingly good given how many New 52 story lines I've been disappointed by。 The first 8 comics were great, and built the story。 And then the ninth went off on a tangent about the Court of Owls。 I happened to have read (and regret doing so) the first volume of that comic line and Nightwing, so I'm vaguely aware of what's going on in this situation。 But they really should have capped this volume with 8 comics instead of 9 I'm very picky with my comics, DC/Marvel especially, so this was actually surprisingly good given how many New 52 story lines I've been disappointed by。 The first 8 comics were great, and built the story。 And then the ninth went off on a tangent about the Court of Owls。 I happened to have read (and regret doing so) the first volume of that comic line and Nightwing, so I'm vaguely aware of what's going on in this situation。 But they really should have capped this volume with 8 comics instead of 9。 It feels like the main storyline gets dropped entirely because the timelines between the different comics dictates that the Court of Owls events have to happen at that time, and for people who haven't read any other New 52 or are reading them out of order, this last comic is going to make no sense to them。 Even to me, I'm wondering how--or even if--it actually ties in with the plot Finch is building in the first 8 comics of the volume。 The idea of a toxin that makes super villains even worse than they are by inhibiting fear is a really neat one。 It even has some effect on Batman。 White Rabbit could have been a little less BDSM fan-service-y, but so many women in super hero comics are sexualized like that I'm not even surprised, honestly。 Each comic has a different suspect in sight about who caused the toxin。 Technically the answer is provided in the last comic, but I don't know if the villain's motive is fully explained as to why he gave these other villains the toxin。 I'd like to see more on that front than stuff with the Owls。 。。。more

Well this is a big sloppy pile of nonsense。 I find it pretty hard to believe Paul Jenkins did all of the writing on this terribly-plotted straight-line of fight scenes and deux ex machinae。 This 100% feels like the writing of an artist like David Finch who's basically just trying to move things along so he can draw a cool new bad guy。And hey, he does that well。 His designs for juiced-up, freaked-out versions of pretty much every villain Batman has ever fought are the exact right amount of distur Well this is a big sloppy pile of nonsense。 I find it pretty hard to believe Paul Jenkins did all of the writing on this terribly-plotted straight-line of fight scenes and deux ex machinae。 This 100% feels like the writing of an artist like David Finch who's basically just trying to move things along so he can draw a cool new bad guy。And hey, he does that well。 His designs for juiced-up, freaked-out versions of pretty much every villain Batman has ever fought are the exact right amount of disturbing, and the detail he adds to scenes is just a couple levels down from Michael Turner (which is high praise)。 But that can't save this story from feeling like a boring parade of villains, none of which have any real goals or stakes attached。There's nothing in here that feels like a twist or a revelation。 Things just kind of progress, with new villains suddenly showing up out of absolutely nowhere。 They will literally just jump into a fight from off screen。 Same goes for heroes like The Flash and Superman, who make appearances here that do nothing to service the plot。 They're seemingly just around so Finch can draw them。 In fact, we don't even see any real consequences for anything that happens in this book。 It's just a bunch of fighting and yelling。Oh, and we can't forget Bodacious Babes。 There are two women in this book, both of which were fabricated for this story, and they're both drawn from the Maliest Male perspective this side of a 1980s Playboy。 One of them, a woman who is legit dressed like a sexy bunny, is in full-on lingerie everywhere she goes。 Just, out and about, scheming up schemes in her corset and nothing else。 I thought for sure we'd moved past this kind of junk by now, but I guess not。In any case, I'm glad to see Gregg Hurwitz takes over with the next volume。 Hopefully a new, seasoned writer taking over will mean stronger stories to go with the great art。 I'll give it a shot for that reason, but if it's anything like this, I'm not excited。 。。。more

There seems to be something at play here but either it spreads in other bat-titles or it's simply awkward。 Gordon also seems a bit too much weepy to be true。There's a Playboy Bunny running around and for the love of me I can't find any reason to her presence but to show some ass。 I'm past fantasizing over comic book character so it actually bored me more than anything else。 Her link to someone else is pretty obvious and shows once again a lack of subtlety。Artwise it's some good Finch- the Arkham inmates are really creepy and the babes gorgeous- with a touch of fumbles。 Some compositions are as awkward as some proportions but it can easily be overcome。 One was notably ridiculous though: there's a scene where the Playboy Bunny teases Batman before running away。 Anyone running so leaned forward would just simply fall flat on the ground。 It's called the law of gravity。 。。。more
