Summary

Author of the international bestsellers The Diabetes Code and The Obesity Code Dr。 Jason Fung returns with an eye-opening biography of cancer in which he offers a radical new paradigm for understanding cancerand issues a call to action for reducing risk moving forward。

Our understanding of cancer is slowly undergoing a revolution, allowing for the development of more effective treatments。 For the first time ever, the death rate from cancer is showing a steady decline 。 。 。 but the “War on Cancer” has hardly been won。

In The Cancer Code, Dr。 Jason Fung offers a revolutionary new understanding of this invasive, often fatal disease—what it is, how it manifests, and why it is so challenging to treat。 In this rousing narrative, Dr。 Fung identifies the medical community’s many missteps in cancer research—in particular, its focus on genetics, or what he terms the “seed” of cancer, at the expense of examining the “soil,” or the conditions under which cancer flourishes。 Dr。 Fung—whose groundbreaking work in the treatment of obesity and diabetes has won him international acclaim—suggests that the primary disease pathway of cancer is caused by the dysregulation of insulin。 In fact, obesity and type 2 diabetes significantly increase an individual’s risk of cancer。

In this accessible read, Dr。 Fung provides a new paradigm for dealing with cancer, with recommendations for what we can do to create a hostile soil for this dangerous seed。 One such strategy is intermittent fasting, which reduces blood glucose, lowering insulin levels。 Another, eliminating intake of insulin-stimulating foods, such as sugar and refined carbohydrates。

For hundreds of years, cancer has been portrayed as a foreign invader we’ve been powerless to stop。 By reshaping our view of cancer as an internal uprising of our own healthy cells, we can begin to take back control。 The seed of cancer may exist in all of us, but the power to change the soil is in our hands。

It took me three months to get through this book。 It will take me some time to go through and look again at all the flags。 All。 the。 flags。 Why, oh why, did I take the minimum required biology in high school (and none beyond that)?? Back with thoughts someday。

Best explanation of the root causes and mechanism of cancer。 And implicitly how to prevent it。 It does not have any miracle cures because there are none at present。 But by understanding the causes and mechanism, you can change your lifestyle to prevent cancer as much as possible

Excellent book! It takes a medical subject, and tells a story about it to a layman without dumbing it down。 Jason Fung has the ability to truly think clearly。 As a cherry on top, he doesn't claim to have clear solutions to a problem which is obviously so complicated。As a layman, the book was educating in so many regards。 First, it explained in clear language what cancer is。 Then it went on to discuss why we have been so poor at fighting it, even as billions have been poured into research to beat Excellent book! I was intrigued reading about the different cancer paradigms from a genetic standpoint and medical nutrition。 After reading this and the Obesity Code, I truly believe that cancer therapies would benefit from ketogenic diets and intermittent fasting。 What I like about it is that it goes through a much more indepth look at cancer historically - from the different theories, etiology, medical treatments created by different providers and scientists - in addition to talking about the physiology of ca I was intrigued reading about the different cancer paradigms from a genetic standpoint and medical nutrition。 After reading this and the Obesity Code, I truly believe that cancer therapies would benefit from ketogenic diets and intermittent fasting。 What I like about it is that it goes through a much more indepth look at cancer historically - from the different theories, etiology, medical treatments created by different providers and scientists - in addition to talking about the physiology of cancer, and preventative measures (vaccines, screening practices and recommendations) currently in place with sources provided。 Main Takeaways (I may edit to add more overtime): 1。 Cancer cells seem to thrive in acidic environments which makes sense when you think about what effects hyperglycemia has on the bloodstream (think about how diabetes is)。 This takes into account endocrine, metabolic processes and the soil theory。 2。 Cancer is an atavism, backwards evolution, towards the unicellular organism from our evolutionary past。3。 Green tea is the most widely studied natural food for chemoprevention and contains much higher concentrations of catechins (30%) than black teas。 Research in Japan showed that high consumption of green tea delayed the average age of cancer by 7。3 years。 4。 Diseases of growth are disease of metabolism; hence cell ecology will be just as important to take into consideration because when nutrients are not available, cells don't multiply and grow。5。 The most important nutrient-sensing pathways in humans are insulin, mTOR and AMPK。 Insulin increases in response to carbs (and protein although not as high as carbs according to the book)。 mTOR responds to dietary protein over 18-30h。 AMPK responds to overall celullar energy from all 3 macronutrients。 6。 Fasting simultaneously reduces all the human nutrient sensors and most of the growth pathways P13K, mTOR, and IGF-1。 Fasting during chemotherapy may also reduce the side effects of treatment while increasing efficacy and protects normal cells by putting them in a quiescent state which cancer cells dislike。 7。 However, reducing glucose is only modestly helpful because advanced cancers can break down other tissues to free glucose as it needs -- leading to cachexia。 。。。more

Exceptionally clear and original take on the subject。 The author looks on the cancer systematically on system level。 It was fascinating to me。 The only issue I can think about is that Fung tends to repeat a bit too much his bottom line and over explain。 This writing can annoy some readers or help other readers to understand。 Overall a very clear and approachable book on cancer。 Highly recommended!

Dr。 Fung holds no punches and is not afraid to throw a few upper-cuts in the direction of the cancer and research industries for their myopia and bias。 This is needed。 With all of the hoopla of the covid pandemic and the media's overwhelming support that 1。 the science is settled and 2。 we should always believe the experts supported by the media, this was a refreshing read as Fung establishes that decades of mistakes have been made, research dollars spent ineffectually, and that all costs truly Dr。 Fung holds no punches and is not afraid to throw a few upper-cuts in the direction of the cancer and research industries for their myopia and bias。 This is needed。 With all of the hoopla of the covid pandemic and the media's overwhelming support that 1。 the science is settled and 2。 we should always believe the experts supported by the media, this was a refreshing read as Fung establishes that decades of mistakes have been made, research dollars spent ineffectually, and that all costs truly should be considered。 Scientific myopia is huge。 Revolutions in medicine mostly occur when someone goes against the settled science。 This isn't the point of the book, yet this is what needs to be echoed through the research institutions, hospitals, and media。 As an example, routine mammograms and PSA screenings do not actually increase survival and cost people quality of life and their overall health through subsequent diagnossesses and agressive treatment。 As men age, most develop non-aggressive cancers in the prostate。 At what cost are these treated when there is no difference in survivability between those diagnosed and those undiagnosed? My 85 year-old grandfather was given hormone treatment for prostate cancer。 Already suffering from dementia, my grandfather went through horrible side effects just to shrink a non-threatening tumor。 It was shameful。 Fung wrote this for those interested in understanding the science and the limitations to the current understandings, not for the quick fix adherrents。 Cancer is an insidious opponent, to be sure, but it is ultimately rational。 Like all life, it wants to survive。 He also honestly discusses the root causes of cancer including lifestyle, genetics, and environment。 For those interesting in casting off dogma and looking honestly at data, this is an excellent and informative read。 。。。more

This book is largely fantastic and I have little to say in complaint。 Dr。 Fung provides an easy-to-understand analysis of three paradigms of cancer。 He goes beneath the surface just far enough to provide a deeper understanding of cancer as a disease, without ending up in the weeds where he would lose a reader without an MD at the end of their name。He claims to offer a new way of seeing the origins of cancer。 The foundations for such are based in evolutionary biology and make a lot of sense。 I th This book is largely fantastic and I have little to say in complaint。 Dr。 Fung provides an easy-to-understand analysis of three paradigms of cancer。 He goes beneath the surface just far enough to provide a deeper understanding of cancer as a disease, without ending up in the weeds where he would lose a reader without an MD at the end of their name。He claims to offer a new way of seeing the origins of cancer。 The foundations for such are based in evolutionary biology and make a lot of sense。 I think a similar perspective has been around for a while, but largely ignored。 Fung highlights it and embraces it as the key to the next phase in cancer research progress。 tI learned a lot of new things from this book, most of them terrifying。 Even a small amount of weight gain increases your risk of cancer。 Many vitamins and supplements increase your risk。 Cancer can hide out in your body for decades undetected and one day just start doing serious damage。 Many cancer screenings may be more harmful than beneficial。 tHis ultimate conclusions were thought-provoking, but left me without the optimism I’d have hoped for。 Fung is short on big solutions to win a fight against cancer in general。 This isn’t really a criticism because it’s hard not to come away with the idea that maybe there isn’t a big solution。 He proffers immunotherapy as possibly the next big thing, but offers scant proof to support any real “big picture” excitement。tHis section on dietary concerns was pretty weak。 He essentially says maybe green tea could help prevent cancer, but that’s about it。 The research supports far more than that and, at a minimum, there should have been more food (pun intended) for thought provided。 tHe made an impression though。 I started intermittent fasting again today。 。。。more

Dr。 Fung is an iconoclast and the Isaac Asimov of our time。 Using science and logic he has taken on the major health issues of our time: obesity, type II diabetes and now cancer。 In each case he began with the accepted status quo and shown them to be false and incomplete。 Then, using facts and data, he builds the case for a new vision of hope in a calm and non-accusatory voice/writing style。 Dr。 Fung is a gift to this generation。
