Summary

A heartfelt, visually stunning picture book from the Caldecott Honor and Sibert Medal Winner illuminates a young girl's day of play and adventure in the lush rain forest of Peru。

Zonia's home is the Amazon rain forest, where it is always green and full of life。 Every morning, the rain forest calls to Zonia, and every morning she answers。 She visits the sloth family, greets the giant anteater, and runs with the speedy jaguar。 But one morning, the rain forest calls to her in a troubled voice。 How will Zonia answer?

Acclaimed author-illustrator Juana Martinez-Neal explores the wonders of the rain forest with Zonia, an Asháninka girl, in her joyful outdoor adventures。 The engaging text emphasizes Zonia’s empowering bond with her home, while the illustrations—created on paper made from banana bark—burst with luxuriant greens and delicate details。 Illuminating back matter includes a translation of the story in Asháninka, information on the Asháninka community, as well as resources on the Amazon rain forest and its wildlife。

Loved this beautiful story about Zonia and her home, the Amazon rainforest。

Zonia is Ashaninka, which is the largest Indigenous group living in the Peruvian Amazon。 Zonia spends her days in the rain forest with all of the inhabitants of the area。 She sees the beauty of the area, and its powerful nature。 On one of her walks home, she notices something she has never seen before, and runs home to tell her mother, who in turn asks Zonia what will she do。 The question lingers for the rest of the world as well。

“Zonia lives with those she loves in the rain forest。”Zonia feels the rain forest calling to her every morning and every morning Zonia goes into the rain forest and greets all of her friends, old and new。 She is one with the animals, playing with some and learning from others。 But as she returns home one day, she sees a frightening sight。 Some of the trees have been burned to the ground。 She runs home to tell her mother what she has seen and her mother challenges her to answer the forest’s call “Zonia lives with those she loves in the rain forest。”Zonia feels the rain forest calling to her every morning and every morning Zonia goes into the rain forest and greets all of her friends, old and new。 She is one with the animals, playing with some and learning from others。 But as she returns home one day, she sees a frightening sight。 Some of the trees have been burned to the ground。 She runs home to tell her mother what she has seen and her mother challenges her to answer the forest’s call for help。 “I will answer as I always do。 We all must answer。”A very thought-provoking picture book。 The illustrations inform the reader of all the different animals of the rain forest, which are then identified in the back of the book。 Also, an author’s note explains that Zonia is Ashaninka, which are indigenous people that live in the Peruvian Amazon rain forest。 It also include information about the Amazon rain forest and threats to the Amazon。 。。。more

Good book, but her unrealistic relationship with many of the animals made the author's argument much less convincing。Also, even if the entire Amazon disappeared, only advanced instruments would notice a decrease in the oxygen levels around the world。 This book parrots misinformation in this regard。Nonetheless, it is a good book and, other than the inaccuracies the author probably doesn't realize are incorrect, has a good message。 Good book, but her unrealistic relationship with many of the animals made the author's argument much less convincing。Also, even if the entire Amazon disappeared, only advanced instruments would notice a decrease in the oxygen levels around the world。 This book parrots misinformation in this regard。Nonetheless, it is a good book and, other than the inaccuracies the author probably doesn't realize are incorrect, has a good message。 。。。more

A book about saving the rain forest through the eyes of a child from just one of the hundreds of indigenous tribes living in the Amazon Rain Forest。 With notes at the end about the Indigenous tribes and the Amazon, as well as a translation of the book in the language of Zonia, this book is important for young eco-fighters。

Zonia's Rain Forest is a sweet picturebook about an Asháninka girl's day of play in the rain forest of Peru with an informative, eye-opening back matter。Juana Martinez-Neal's illustrations, made on handmade banana bark paper, are cute, playful, and colorful, albeit not very realistic (e。g。, Zonia riding a jaguar)。However, the story feels unfinished as it stops abruptly in the most interesting part。 There's some interesting, eye-opening information about the Asháninka people and deforestation of Zonia's Rain Forest is a sweet picturebook about an Asháninka girl's day of play in the rain forest of Peru with an informative, eye-opening back matter。Juana Martinez-Neal's illustrations, made on handmade banana bark paper, are cute, playful, and colorful, albeit not very realistic (e。g。, Zonia riding a jaguar)。However, the story feels unfinished as it stops abruptly in the most interesting part。 There's some interesting, eye-opening information about the Asháninka people and deforestation of the Amazon rain forest in the back matter, but I wish the story itself was more developed。 。。。more

Well this is just great。 Things I loved about it:1) the illustrations! Wow oh wow! I loved them。 (especially the normalization of breast feeding on page 1)2) All the Amazon animals we get to meet throughout the book。3) Zonia's bubbly personality that shines through (I love when she mentions how much she loves her baby brother adorable!)4) the message of helping/protecting the rain forest/environment。 At first, I thought this came out of the blue a bit at the end but the more I thought about it, Well this is just great。 Things I loved about it:1) the illustrations! Beautiful illustrations that show the wonder of the rainforest and the destruction that can come with deforestation。

Just so pretty。 The soft illustrations welcome the reader into Zonia's rain forest, and the colors highlight the animals she meets。 Opportunities to name and count the animals run throughout the book, and in the end, and the reader is drawn right in。 At the end, there is a call to action。 This call is depressing to someone who vividly remembers the same call in her own third grade classroom (shouldn't we have saved the rain forest by now? we managed to tackle the ozone layer, which was the other Just so pretty。 The soft illustrations welcome the reader into Zonia's rain forest, and the colors highlight the animals she meets。 Opportunities to name and count the animals run throughout the book, and in the end, and the reader is drawn right in。 At the end, there is a call to action。 This call is depressing to someone who vividly remembers the same call in her own third grade classroom (shouldn't we have saved the rain forest by now? we managed to tackle the ozone layer, which was the other issue I recall from 1990)。 There are no easy answers, but plenty of additional resources, and the entire story is a reminder that the rain forests are not just home to a host of myriad animals, but to humans as well。Gorgeous, and somehow both light-hearted and packs a serious message。 。。。more
