YES Edward is a stalker and Bella is a 'not like other girls' girl and it's insufferably cheesy。 BUT when you get past that, this is such a fun book to read! It was a fun nostalgic read that gave a bit more perspective to the story!

when i was younger, i LOVED twilight and would’ve definitely cried while reading it。 don’t get me wrong, i still love the saga - but this book was so hard to finish。 edward’s monologue sometimes was really boring and i had no desire to keep reading it。 although i was still excited to discover the cullens pov of the story, many parts felt a little bit unnecessary (specially because we already know everything that happens。 keeping everything single line of original dialogue was kinda irritating)。 when i was younger, i LOVED twilight and would’ve definitely cried while reading it。 don’t get me wrong, i still love the saga - but this book was so hard to finish。 edward’s monologue sometimes was really boring and i had no desire to keep reading it。 although i was still excited to discover the cullens pov of the story, many parts felt a little bit unnecessary (specially because we already know everything that happens。 keeping everything single line of original dialogue was kinda irritating)。 but the books is still a solid 3 stars, mainly because of the nostalgia lmao 。。。more

I started reading this book simply because I needed something to do while cleaning and it was the first audiobook to come out on YouTube。 The truth is that I had no desire, nor any expectation, I had even heard that it was not worth it and that it was boring, slow and so on。 I did not feel that way, it is repetitive, being the same book told from another point of view, but, if you liked the original story, you will like this one too。 It is not news that twilight is a saga that most of the readers have passed through, it was very fashionable and I think that everyone has read or seen the movies。I personally like the story a lot, maybe because I've literally grown up with it (I think I saw the first movie at 10 or earlier) and because it's usually the kind of stories I enjoy。 The books in general are good, despite the fact that Bella as a character is one of the most exasperating storytellers I have ever read; it is very descriptive, overly dramatic, and, to my expression, inexpressive, so it looks like stale bread。I was pleasantly surprised by this book, since Edward as a narrator is the opposite, he sees in beautiful a super expressive and warm person。 Besides that he has so much devotion for her and at the same time so many mixed feelings, that it is attractive to know the other part of the story, in which he, despite being the perfect vampire, is vulnerable。 The narration is a bit dense, but I enjoyed it mainly because Edward could read everyone's mind, many of the things that happen he sees through the minds of others。 Besides that we got to know the Cullens better as a family and what they did when Bella was gone, what her life was like before her。I feel like Edward thinks a lot, and that made the book a bit long, it almost seemed stream of consciousness, but in general, I liked being able to re-enjoy the story from another point of view, and relive my tastes from the past。 It was a beautiful experience。 I emphasize especially the first chapter where he spends about ten pages describing how he imagines killing Bella, I laughed a lot。If the author did the whole saga from Edward's point of view she would probably read it, but, considering that it took like 8 years to publish this book 。。。 I don't think so。 If you are a fan of twilight, I recommend that you read this book, it has an interesting and much more intense take on the original story, with much more vampires included。 。。。more

Even in the peak of my Twilight obsession in middle school, I didn't really care if we got Midnight Sun or not。 I didn't read the leak as I didn't see the point。 But, there is a point。 The same book from Edward's perspective works since he can read minds。 If he didn't have this ability, it would have made for a far less interesting book。 We not only get Edward's perspective - we get basically every perspective that isn't Bella's。 As a result, we learn a lot about the other characters。 Though it Even in the peak of my Twilight obsession in middle school, I didn't really care if we got Midnight Sun or not。 I didn't read the leak as I didn't see the point。 But, there is a point。 The same book from Edward's perspective works since he can read minds。 If he didn't have this ability, it would have made for a far less interesting book。 We not only get Edward's perspective - we get basically every perspective that isn't Bella's。 As a result, we learn a lot about the other characters。 Though it may seem unlikely, we learn a lot about Bella, too。 Anyone paying close attention to Twilight will understand that Bella is an unreliable narrator when it comes to herself。 People criticized the novel frequently when considering Bella's "plainness," when like most teenagers, the only person in that novel who believes that is Bella herself。 I knew that much, and have been giving Meyer plenty of credit for mastering the art of point of view。 But Edward picks up on a host of other traits which really were right in front of our faces in the regular series, but since Bella didn't name them and we're blinded by her own rationalizing, readers likely wouldn't have picked up on them。 (I didn't, anyway。) I was especially intrigued by his analysis of Rene and her relationship with Bella。 In fact, any of the "shortcomings" I perceived in crafting Bella's character makes more sense now。In some ways, I suppose I could grant Midnight Sun a lesser rating。 It can be quite slow at times。。。 but, that's kind of the thing with Midnight Sun。 It's not a "normal" novel。 It's an indulgence。 It's not something to read if you're not a fan of the first one, because you're just getting the same story with much more detail。 As a fan of the series, it held my interest, but if Twilight is something you don't connect with anymore, it's probably not for you。 I, for one, enjoyed myself。 Edward and his annoying decision-making skills make more sense, and frankly, it's just a fun story。 I'm happy that Meyer gave us a little more of this world that has brought so much joy。 。。。more

I feel like I just read 600 pages of Edward saying “I’m obsessed, but I’m bad for her” over and over again while hardly anything else significant happened。 I guess I like a little more plot in my plots。 I did like seeing how Alice processes her visions and how they shift around。 She and Jasper were the highlights of the book for me。

Wow, Jake Abel really will do anything。 Reaching the final chapter of this felt like coming to the border of an immense desert, before shortly realising that the end was a mirage because I had another HOUR LONG chapter to get through before this little burst of nostalgia finished for me。 Maybe one star is a little harsh because it's not like this was the worst thing I ever put myself in the name of an expansive literary education。 Stephanie Meyer can write (sometimes) and I did find myself enjoy Wow, Jake Abel really will do anything。 Reaching the final chapter of this felt like coming to the border of an immense desert, before shortly realising that the end was a mirage because I had another HOUR LONG chapter to get through before this little burst of nostalgia finished for me。 Maybe one star is a little harsh because it's not like this was the worst thing I ever put myself in the name of an expansive literary education。 Stephanie Meyer can write (sometimes) and I did find myself enjoying parts of Midnight Sun unironically, mostly when the romance got shelved in favour of vampire shit。 But the whole thing was marred by BOREDOM。 While I can forgive stories for being ridiculous, overindulgent, poorly constructed, and two-dimensional, I cannot stand being bored。 The writer priorities as to what we needed to know every detail of and what was glossed over were all wrong for my personal enjoyment。 The best example of how Midnight Sun achieves this lackadaisical feel would be the simple fact that the first kiss chapter was 107 MINUTES LONG while the climax was all of two lines; basically, 'I surprised James and threw him to a side character so I could get back to the unimportant stuff'。 I get that she was limited by what had already happened in Twilight but COME ON。 The absurd length of this book was so unnecessary。 Was she being paid by the word? It felt like for every line of dialogue there was three pages of dissecting。 Also thank you, Midnight Sun, for reminding me how terrible Edward is。 I had started to wonder why I ever did。 Answer; he is a predatory, overprotective, opportunistic incel who ignores almost all of what Bella wants (when he isn't openly laughing at her for them)。 Like seriously, slow down your car and make your girlfriend feel a little safer, ffs。 Also, really tiny think but I really didn't like the retcon that he was responsible for Angela and Ben, the only healthy couple in all of Twilight, getting together。 I don't know why it was included and I hated how crowbarred in it felt。 Maybe to make up for how much time Edward spent invading the privacy of, judging and actively despising these 'children' - his title, not mine。 Didn't miss that they were all the same age as his girlfriend either, but that's another conversation。 Hasn't Stephanie Meyer ever heard the rule of vampire romance? 'Don't mention the age gap'? I mean props to her for breaking the mould but also, ick。 In conclusion, why? Why was this released in the year 2021? Why did I commit 26 hours of my life to it? And why did is my first long-form review in months about a book I actively disliked? I'm glad so many seemed to have a blast with it, but I'm left with only regrets。 And why。 。。。more

Eh。 This was OK。 The audio version was well done。 I did appreciate the insight on to Edwards mind, especially considering he isn’t the most verbose of characters。 Being able to hear his internal processes helped understand some of the moments in the original version of the book。 That said, it was too long and fairly dull。

Okay to be honest the last 200 pages or so of this 756 page monster almost pushed this up to 2 stars so my rating is actually 1。5 stars。 Anyway, where to start with this。。。If this book had of been marketed as something from the eyes of a depraved stalker/serial killer I probably would have given it a higher rating but because I knew it is supposed to be a love story, an honest to god happily ever after sweet love story, I spent most of my time reading this feeling appalled and disgusted at both Okay to be honest the last 200 pages or so of this 756 page monster almost pushed this up to 2 stars so my rating is actually 1。5 stars。 Anyway, where to start with this。。。If this book had of been marketed as something from the eyes of a depraved stalker/serial killer I probably would have given it a higher rating but because I knew it is supposed to be a love story, an honest to god happily ever after sweet love story, I spent most of my time reading this feeling appalled and disgusted at both Edward's thoughts and actions。 At least when you read Twilight you felt like Bella had a choice, that she was choosing Edward。 In Midnight Sun the vibe is more like she is being indoctrinated into some weird cult because she is the perfect match for the only child who does not yet have a partner。 It is real weird, and uncomfortable, and generally just felt icky to read in places。 Edward constantly treats Bella like she doesn't deserve to make choices in her life because her choices would be 'wrong' and is constantly calling her a 'fragile girl' in his head。 Not to mention a good chunk of the first half of the book is dedicated to Edward wanting to kill Bella and providing us with vivid imaginings of exactly how he would do this, only to go on to blame her for him potentially killing her one day??? Way to take victim blaming to a whole new level。 I hated the way every single character outside of Bella's immediate family and the Cullens are made out to be horrible people because Edward can read their thoughts and since they have normal, human thoughts they are all useless idiots - despite the fact that Edward literally acts and thinks the same way as all those people he looks down on for doing the exact same things。 The only people immune to this are Angela, because I guess we need at least one nice human friend for Bella, and Jacob, because god forbid we paint the third part of the upcoming love triangle/future son-in-law as anything but lovely and pure。 The Jacob thing was a huge cop out and so obvious that I couldn't help but roll my eyes every time Edward was close enough to hear Jacob's thoughts。 There are sooooo many gross things about this book and the way it portrays the relationship between Bella and Edward that if I listed them all this review would probably be as long as the book itself。 I get sometimes people want to read trashy romance (I like to sometimes as well) but when people are reading something like this - when the author is writing something like this - and then holding it up as a legitimate, romantic, healthy relationship, I can't help but believe this contributes to why so many people end up in completely messed up relationships and think that it's normal。 There are a ridiculous number of things that Edward does that just scream red flag and we're supposed to just accept it because he tells us he's doing it because he loves her? Ugh, it's just gross。 What I felt was the only redeeming part of this book came in the last fifth of the book and that was when Edward and his family were trying to outsmart James。 This part I actually didn't mind reading because it was something new and it actually felt clever。 There was action, there was high stakes, there was no super problematic behaviour towards Bella except from the man who was supposed to be the bad guy, it was great! Unfortunately that only lasted for about two chapters and then we were back to Edward bemoaning the fact he was going to have to break up with Bella now and lying directly to her face about it for the rest of the book。I started this book as part of a 'bad book bookclub' during the hard lockdowns of 2020 and got about half way through it。 I found it such a drag to read I probably would have never continued it if I hand't already invested so much time into reading that far and wanted to check off another book for my 2021 reading challenge。 I feel like that probably tells you a lot about my feelings towards this book overall if my earlier criticisms didn't。 TL;DR: Mind of a killer book masquerading as a true love romance that makes you feel gross for reading it。 Two or three redeeming chapters when the 'lovers' are are not together and it turns into an an exciting action romp but overall reading from Edward's point of view is repetitive and icky。 1。5 stars。 。。。more

Twilight is 509 pages。 This book is over 650。。。 And it’s all just dumb filler stuff inside Edwards head between the normal scenes we already knew。 I think if I got this book a decade ago I would have been thrilled, but it’s just not worth it。 I’m DNFing at 50% of the way through because it’s just so dull and after 9 months of slowly slogging through it when I felt like it, I just never want to pick it up again。

This book just reinforced my opinion that the Twilight Saga is better than the general public believes it to be, and the movies aren't made for people who haven't read the books and don't understand what is happening in the heads of the characters。All in all a great read, definitely recommend it! I would have enjoyed this right after twilight for a better comparison of the narratives。 (I also just read the rest of the series and understand reading in a different order would only be possible if you started the series now。)
