Summary

"An inventive plot and incisive character studies elevate MWA Grand Master Grafton's twenty-fourth Kinsey Millhone novel。。。This superior outing will remind readers why this much-loved series will be missed as the end of the alphabet approaches。"--Publishers Weekly (starred review)

X: The number ten。 An unknown quantity。 A mistake。 A cross。 A kiss。。。

Perhaps Sue Grafton's darkest and most chilling novel, X features a remorseless serial killer who leaves no trace of his crimes。 Once again breaking the rules and establishing new paths, Grafton wastes little time identifying this deadly sociopath。 The test is whether private investigator Kinsey Millhone can prove her case against him--before she becomes his next victim。

3。5 stars, Sue Grafton bit off more than she could chew in this book, there are too many storylines with plot holes that needed to be filled in。 The serial killer storyline was missing that element of suspense and really needed a few more details and time spent on it。 I’m wondering if she will continue the storyline in the next book or was planning on completing the capture in the last book which was never finished。 Kinsey still bewilders in her actions that make no common sense when dealing wit 3。5 stars, Sue Grafton bit off more than she could chew in this book, there are too many storylines with plot holes that needed to be filled in。 The serial killer storyline was missing that element of suspense and really needed a few more details and time spent on it。 I’m wondering if she will continue the storyline in the next book or was planning on completing the capture in the last book which was never finished。 Kinsey still bewilders in her actions that make no common sense when dealing with dangerous situations but I guess Grafton doesn’t have the imagination to create scenarios in which Kinsey is in danger not of her own creating。 。。。more

#24 in the Kinsey Millhone series, and one of the best so far。 I could hardly put this book down。 I'd taken a hiatus from this series, and it was a pleasure to pick up the alphabet and immerse myself in #24。 This is a dark book。。。several stories going on at the same time that Kinsey becomes involved in。 Henry is there too, and William and Rosie (although Rosie's cooking seems more mainstream)。 Each of the stories was compelling in their own right。 Put together, they don't intersect at the end bu #24 in the Kinsey Millhone series, and one of the best so far。 I could hardly put this book down。 I'd taken a hiatus from this series, and it was a pleasure to pick up the alphabet and immerse myself in #24。 This is a dark book。。。several stories going on at the same time that Kinsey becomes involved in。 Henry is there too, and William and Rosie (although Rosie's cooking seems more mainstream)。 Each of the stories was compelling in their own right。 Put together, they don't intersect at the end but rather compliment each other。I rarely give 5 star reviews。 I am just so sorry that Kinsey's story ends with #25。 These novels are highly addictive。 。。。more

Rest In Peace Ms。 Grafton。 I loved the book。 My head was spending trying to piece the puzzles together。

Kinsey gets scammed and seeks to find the answers。 Meanwhile Henry is scammed by the new neighbors, who are not as helpless as they want you to believe。Lots of twists and some scary stalked parts

Loved the reader on this book。 She sounded just as I thought Kinsey Milhone would sound! It’s interesting to read these books that take place before technology escalated。 It was distracting to me though because I was constantly thinking about much they needed cell phones and computers to be more efficient。 Suspenseful and interesting storyline and characters。 Very enjoyable as an audiobook。

I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the Kinsey Milhone books and hadn't read the latest ones, so what a pleasure to rediscover them。 The characters are very real, even the minor ones。 I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the Kinsey Milhone books and hadn't read the latest ones, so what a pleasure to rediscover them。 The characters are very real, even the minor ones。 。。。more

There's a trend in this series's later books - the case/mystery described by the publisher is only one of two or three (it seems) covered in the story。 In this latest installment, X, Grafton's woman detective uncovers a serial killer based on a different PI's preliminary work, exposes an art heist, and counterfeit money makes an appearance。 The serial killer storyline is written into the bigger, in my opinion, case Kinsey is working on which is the art heist。 The serial killer part of the book c There's a trend in this series's later books - the case/mystery described by the publisher is only one of two or three (it seems) covered in the story。 In this latest installment, X, Grafton's woman detective uncovers a serial killer based on a different PI's preliminary work, exposes an art heist, and counterfeit money makes an appearance。 The serial killer storyline is written into the bigger, in my opinion, case Kinsey is working on which is the art heist。 The serial killer part of the book concludes the book but it doesn't dominate the book overall。 I looked up "words that start with X" and Grafton was stuck regarding this letter。 It's pretty obvious why she just called the title X and let it lie。 As seems to be the case with this series, I don't have anything new to say about this title。 It was predictable as the series has been and the Millhone character falls into that predictability as well。 。。。more

X is a dated book, using Maps and phone books to look up stuff。 Just so much info。 So many people evolved and with each new person great details of what they are wearing。 I liked the plot but I kept drifting off as I walked an listen because of so much minor details that just didn't have much to do with solving the mystery。 X is a dated book, using Maps and phone books to look up stuff。 Just so much info。 So many people evolved and with each new person great details of what they are wearing。 I liked the plot but I kept drifting off as I walked an listen because of so much minor details that just didn't have much to do with solving the mystery。 。。。more

A nice easy listen after some really long books。 I love the narrator on this series, can't remember the last time I read one。 Sue G is incomparable on her writing style, and the fun of Kinsey Millhone。 A nice easy listen after some really long books。 I love the narrator on this series, can't remember the last time I read one。 Sue G is incomparable on her writing style, and the fun of Kinsey Millhone。 。。。more

I just really enjoy this series! Kinsey is such a tenacious and funny lead and the mystery elements in each story are so varied and interesting。 The cases in this installment were fresh and full of great characters and plot twists。 This is one series I definitely recommend reading in order because I really do believe they keep getting better

“Memory is subject to a filtering process that we don’t always recognize and can’t always control。 We remember what we can bear and we block we cannot” (pg。 256)。 I only read this book because it fit perfectly into my #AToZReadathon21 challenge😂 I’ve never heard of this author or series before。 I usually love thrillers, but this one wasn’t my favorite。 It was all over the place with three different plots。 I expected the plots to somehow be connected at the end, but they weren’t。 I think I would “Memory is subject to a filtering process that we don’t always recognize and can’t always control。 We remember what we can bear and we block we cannot” (pg。 256)。 I only read this book because it fit perfectly into my #AToZReadathon21 challenge😂 I’ve never heard of this author or series before。 I usually love thrillers, but this one wasn’t my favorite。 It was all over the place with three different plots。 I expected the plots to somehow be connected at the end, but they weren’t。 I think I would have enjoyed this much more if it focused on one of the plots, or if all three were tied together at the end。 I did love the main character, Kinsey。 She is a strong, independent, and brilliant private detective。 She is definitely a multidimensional character who developed immensely in this one book, and I’m sure even more throughout the whole series。 Although each book can be read as a stand-alone, maybe I would have appreciated this more if I read the 23 prior books in this series。 If anyone has read Sue Grafton before, let me know your favorites! I did enjoy the writing style, but the holes and back-and-forth plots in the story just weren’t for me。Synopsis: Private Investigator Kinsey Millhone is back at it! She has been contacted by a wealthy & mysterious woman to find her son whom she gave up for adoption over 30 years ago。 Kinsey quickly locates the young man and provides the necessary information to her employer。 However, Kinsey shortly finds out that she was paid with marked bills and the mysterious woman has disappeared。。。In the meantime, Kinsey is trying to finish what one of her late P。I。 friends had started。 Kinsey finds old encrypted documents, and she is determined to decipher them and solve the cold case。。。When Kinsey is not working on cases, she is spending time with her beloved 89-year-old landlord, Henry。 They begin to notice that Henry’s water bills are extremely high, despite all conscience efforts to minimize water usage。 This leads to a strange discovery of who is living next door。。。 How will Kinsey manage all of the mystery, deception, and danger in her life? 。。。more

It’s been many years since I have read a Grafton book。 This one is next to her last as sadly she passed before reaching Z。 Overall a fun read (listen )。 At first I was put off by reader Judy Kaye as she sounded older and more stern then I would imagine Kinsey but I adapted to her style and she gave the different characters good voices。 The plot was maybe a little mundane and drawn out but Milhone’s narrative is always engaging。

Worst of the series。 Bounced all over the place and landed no where。

Love Sue Grafton and forever thankful to her getting me through some long road trips。 This one had 3 different story paths in it and though I felt the build up was good- I didn't get that climax/aha-omg moment I've come to love in reading mystery books with any of the paths。 Love Sue Grafton and forever thankful to her getting me through some long road trips。 This one had 3 different story paths in it and though I felt the build up was good- I didn't get that climax/aha-omg moment I've come to love in reading mystery books with any of the paths。 。。。more

Sue Grafton and Kinsey Millhone always feel like old friends when I return to them。 I’ve been reading this series since high school, and I’m sad that I’ve almost reached the end。 I haven’t enjoyed the last few as much as the earlier ones, but I feel like I have to see them through。 A domestic dispute/art heist, a man named Ned Lowe, and an elderly couple that move in next door are the main plot points this go around。 And this is my complaint。 Too many moving parts and too much time spent on desc Sue Grafton and Kinsey Millhone always feel like old friends when I return to them。 I’ve been reading this series since high school, and I’m sad that I’ve almost reached the end。 I haven’t enjoyed the last few as much as the earlier ones, but I feel like I have to see them through。 A domestic dispute/art heist, a man named Ned Lowe, and an elderly couple that move in next door are the main plot points this go around。 And this is my complaint。 Too many moving parts and too much time spent on describing every little detail。 Grafton’s books end up being 150 pages longer than necessary, and I get bogged down in the extras。 If you have read and liked Sue Grafton’s series, this is a good one, but if you are new to these, wouldn’t recommend until you have read some of the beginning books。 。。。more

Liked this book with its meandering tales involving Kinsey's interactions with ordinary folks who inhabited four parallel stories。 Like all PIs, I guess, she's curious (nosy) and eager to see adequate closure to the interwoven tales of her work。 No hugely irritating histrionics or deliberately getting in harm's way。 Only one brief episode involving her own near-demise at the hands of one of the protagonists (who got away but would surely be apprehended at a later date), and then moving forward, Liked this book with its meandering tales involving Kinsey's interactions with ordinary folks who inhabited four parallel stories。 Like all PIs, I guess, she's curious (nosy) and eager to see adequate closure to the interwoven tales of her work。 No hugely irritating histrionics or deliberately getting in harm's way。 Only one brief episode involving her own near-demise at the hands of one of the protagonists (who got away but would surely be apprehended at a later date), and then moving forward, loose ends of the other subplots tied up in a very satisfactory and satisfying manner。 A calm, almost gentle read rather than a frenetic race against time to get desired results。 Very enjoyable read。 。。。more

Disappointing。 The last two books were so good; I had high hopes for this one。 Three different plots。 The most compelling one builds and builds until the last few pages and it’s not even solved。 And way too much detail about unnecessary stuff。
