Summary

Dante can swim。 Ari can't。 Dante is articulate and self-assured。 Ari has a hard time with words and suffers from self-doubt。 Dante gets lost in poetry and art。 Ari gets lost in thoughts of his older brother who is in prison。 Dante is fair skinned。 Ari's features are much darker。 It seems that a boy like Dante, with his open and unique perspective on life, would be the last person to break down the walls that Ari has built around himself。

But against all odds, when Ari and Dante meet, they develop a special bond that will teach them the most important truths of their lives, and help define the people they want to be。 But there are big hurdles in their way, and only by believing in each other―and the power of their friendship―can Ari and Dante emerge stronger on the other side。

SPOILER ALERT- do not read this- cause this is more of reaction cause I just finished the book and I want to scream!!Oh my God the frustration and mental agony I went through reading this book!!!!!! Initially I was like it’s fine。。 It’s still beautiful if it’s about a solid AF friendship between a gay boy and a straight boy。But God, towards the very end I got really frustrated and annoyed with Ari and the writer for putting me through all of that。。。 cause I really wanted it to happen and thought SPOILER ALERT- do not read this- cause this is more of reaction cause I just finished the book and I want to scream!!Oh my God the frustration and mental agony I went through reading this book!!!!!! I was so annoyed at Ari for not loving Dante back! I was like WHY!!!!Then the ENDING HAPPENED!!! THANK YOU!! Cause now I can sleep in peace。 I would’ve been so upset and distressed if it didn’t end that way lmaoLove it。 Honestly。 It was perfect。 Except for the Ari’s brothers drama and constant obsession Ari had with him。 It was really annoying。 Everything else was perfect ♥️ I need a tv series!!! Please!!!!! Why isn’t this a movie yet!!??!! 。。。more

This book tore my heart out and then put it back inside。 If I were asked to prove that love is real, I'd offer this book as solid evidence。 This book tore my heart out and then put it back inside。 If I were asked to prove that love is real, I'd offer this book as solid evidence。 。。。more

why was this so short?? well it wasn’t really short, but i read it too fast and now i want more :( this was really good, such a beautiful story。 the writing isn’t anything special, but i think it’s more the story that matters than anything。 some of the things it said, and the way ari felt about life and the universe in general is something that i think everyone can relate to。 or maybe it’s just me。such a beautiful story, i loved aristole and dante’s friendship, as well as how they felt about eac why was this so short?? well it wasn’t really short, but i read it too fast and now i want more :( this was really good, such a beautiful story。 the writing isn’t anything special, but i think it’s more the story that matters than anything。 some of the things it said, and the way ari felt about life and the universe in general is something that i think everyone can relate to。 or maybe it’s just me。such a beautiful story, i loved aristole and dante’s friendship, as well as how they felt about each other。 i’m going to miss this, it’s a easy read, no big words, simple to read and simply written。 but the story behind it and the plot was everything。 a beautiful coming of age story, probably my favorite coming of age story。:) loved it! and it totally deserves the amount of awards it has。 。。。more

"Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe," by Benjamin Alire Saenz, follows the story of two boys, Ari and Dante, as they progressively discover their sexuality。 Ari is confused and frustrated about who he is and his family and is trying to make sense of the world。 His father is silent and hides his past of the Vietnam War, and his brother, Bernardo, has been in prison since he was a little boy, and his parents are unwilling to discuss it。 He meets Dante at the pool, and they im "Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe," by Benjamin Alire Saenz, follows the story of two boys, Ari and Dante, as they progressively discover their sexuality。 Ari is confused and frustrated about who he is and his family and is trying to make sense of the world。 His father is silent and hides his past of the Vietnam War, and his brother, Bernardo, has been in prison since he was a little boy, and his parents are unwilling to discuss it。 He meets Dante at the pool, and they immediately become friends。 Dante immediate seems surer of himself。 He is an artist, loves poetry, animals (especially birds), and all around is an intellectual。 Dante reveals to Ari that he likes kissing boys more than he likes kissing girls, but he is afraid to tell his parents。 Later, Ari makes Dante promise not to kiss him and he promises not to leave him when he is made fun of for being friends with a gay guy。 Ari spends the entirety of the novel fighting against his feelings for Dante and refusing to acknowledge his sexuality。 On two separate occasions, each of them ends up in the hospital for different reasons。 The first time creating a small rift between Dante and Ari, while the second time bringing them even more close together。 I imagine that this story is an accurate representation of high school kids who come out as gay。 Even in today's world, where the LGBTQ+ community is more widely accepted, it's still hard to go against familial, personal, and societal expectations of what a man/ boy is supposed to be。 The fear of disappointment can often cloud rational judgement。 Dante shares this fear with Ari, saying, "The thing is I love my dad。 My mom too。 And I keep wondering what they’re going to say when I tell them that someday I want to marry a boy。 I wonder how that’s going to go over? I’m the only son。 What’s going to happen with the grandchildren thing? I hate that I’m going to disappoint them, Ari。 I know I’ve disappointed you too" (Saenz 227)。 This book is relatable, and not only for LGBTQ+ youth, for everyone。 Fear of disappointment is universal, but the pain from not loving and being oneself is worse。 Great read! 。。。more

DNF - I wanted to love this so much。 I listened to it and read。 I made it to 37% - It felt like I had been listening and reading forever and I was only 1/3 of the way through。。。 WHAT? I wanted to know why everyone loved it so much and it won all of these awards, but I just could not tell where the story was going。 I gave up。 sorry!

A coming of age book with a sensitive portrayal of parent-child relationship。 Also exploring what home means。 Definitely worth a read

5 stars is an understatement for such a phenomenal book。 This is worth listening to as an audiobook as Lin Manuel Miranda narrates。 There were such complex life lessons presented in a way that made me fall in love with every single character。 I feel confident that Ari, in particular, will stay with me my entire life。
