Woa, he really does cover the whole body。 For me it was a long string of facts。 All interesting but also a ton of information。 I don’t feel like I will retain any of the facts, but I do appreciate the overview。 It is amazing how much we still don’t know about our bodies。

A nonfiction offering from Bryson dealing with human physiology。 The previous Bryson books I've read, i。e。 "A Walk in the Woods", were written for entertainment value。 "The Body" packs a lot of factual material, and Bryson obviously researched it meticulously, with a myriad of first person interviews。 It's a very interesting, well written, and entertaining read。 A nonfiction offering from Bryson dealing with human physiology。 The previous Bryson books I've read, i。e。 "A Walk in the Woods", were written for entertainment value。 "The Body" packs a lot of factual material, and Bryson obviously researched it meticulously, with a myriad of first person interviews。 It's a very interesting, well written, and entertaining read。 。。。more

“And that’s you gone。 But it was good while it lasted, wasn’t it。” Clever and entertaining, informative and well-researched- as Bill Bryson always is。

Such an in-depth and entertaining story of the body。 I listened to the audiobook during my daily commutes and while running errands and it was kind of perfect for that purpose。

What an author! To be able to take such a vast, dry subject like human anatomy and physiology and make it interesting and keep you reading it is truly remarkable! Great job Bill Bryson! You don’t need to be a doctor or medical student to enjoy this book and as a fellow human being, I would highly recommend it to you! 😎

Bill BRYSON can write about anything and make it interesting, so you can imagine what is the result could be when he writes about us as occupants of our bodies。This book not a "scientific" book;it's kinda "let me put it in these words" book Bill BRYSON can write about anything and make it interesting, so you can imagine what is the result could be when he writes about us as occupants of our bodies。This book not a "scientific" book;it's kinda "let me put it in these words" book 。。。more

A must read for anyone who wants a tour of the human body

An entertaining and informative romp through the human body from the head on down! Bill Bryson has such a fun voice, and I appreciated his asides about the history of medicine and the etymology of medical terms alongside his teardown of our bodies’ functional components。

My husband and I listened to this throughout a couple car trips。 It was simple enough that a normal person(me) could understand, yet in depth enough that a medical person (my husband) appreciated it too。 It was very informational but unfortunately quite dry。 There were a few funny anecdotes sprinkled throughout but not near enough to counterbalance the shear amount of statistics, data, and studies mentioned。 This wasn’t up to the standards set by the Bill Bryson stuff we have enjoyed in the past My husband and I listened to this throughout a couple car trips。 It was simple enough that a normal person(me) could understand, yet in depth enough that a medical person (my husband) appreciated it too。 It was very informational but unfortunately quite dry。 There were a few funny anecdotes sprinkled throughout but not near enough to counterbalance the shear amount of statistics, data, and studies mentioned。 This wasn’t up to the standards set by the Bill Bryson stuff we have enjoyed in the past。 。。。more

Certainly an amazing book about our bodies and health! I think everyone should read/listen to this book - the author writes in a very non-scientific language so it is easy to understand for everyone。 The book starts from skin and hair and literally goes deep into our bodies to all internal organs and systems inside us。 There are many stories about the history of various medical discoveries, doctors and treatments, and of course various illnesses and statistics affecting humanity。 I bet even if y Certainly an amazing book about our bodies and health! It was a fascinating book, jam-packed with facts and history of every single thing you can think of in a human body。 I listened to it as an audiobook, but would love to have a paper copy to refer back to。The book clearly shows the way the science works and there is probably a ton of research out there that we know as truth right now only to be disputed in the next decade or so。

Bill Bryson does it again with another fantastic book。 This guy's science writing is second to none (that I've come across)。 He writes about the body with the level of fascination and wonder appropriate to one of the most amazing machines on the planet。 Bill Bryson does it again with another fantastic book。 This guy's science writing is second to none (that I've come across)。 He writes about the body with the level of fascination and wonder appropriate to one of the most amazing machines on the planet。 。。。more

What a terrific book。 Bill Bryson is a first rate writer who has produced a wide variety of interesting books。 You may have read a few。 Just check the titles under his name and note the number of stars his books have earned, too。 He writes in a clear, straight forward manner sometimes with a bit of gentle humor。 The Body: A Guide for Occupants is a serious and well meaning book about the state of our bodies and progress of medical science and technology。 It is not exactly an owner's manual but y What a terrific book。 Bill Bryson is a first rate writer who has produced a wide variety of interesting books。 You may have read a few。 Just check the titles under his name and note the number of stars his books have earned, too。 He writes in a clear, straight forward manner sometimes with a bit of gentle humor。 The Body: A Guide for Occupants is a serious and well meaning book about the state of our bodies and progress of medical science and technology。 It is not exactly an owner's manual but you may find it a handy source of information。 It is all broken down into more than twenty chapters including skin and hair, brain, nerves, immune system, lungs, blood and other vital subjects。 。。。more

First of all, if you say "A Guide," I don't really want a tour of a history of finding out about the body, and even less the history about finding out about the diseases, I'd like a short, interesting tour of the body。 Sigh。 Second, this book was way too "America centric" for me。 I know, that one is on me。 I guess I wasn't the intended target audience for it。 If you're from USA or if small facts about the health & diseases of American people interes you this book will probably be more to your li First of all, if you say "A Guide," I don't really want a tour of a history of finding out about the body, and even less the history about finding out about the diseases, I'd like a short, interesting tour of the body。 Sigh。 Second, this book was way too "America centric" for me。 I know, that one is on me。 I guess I wasn't the intended target audience for it。 If you're from USA or if small facts about the health & diseases of American people interes you this book will probably be more to your liking。And third, what is up with using imperial system of measurement and only sometimes also converting it in metric。 Either just only use imperial from the start so I know right away I'll need internet access while reading so I can convert the units or ALWAYS use both。 Is it too much to ask for consistency? So it's safe to say I didn't enjoy this book as much as I hoped to。 。。。more

Excellent books。 Tells how amazing is our human body, how well crafted it is! Also, we know so little about this amazing system in spite of so much that has been discovered, many of them are accidental。

It took me a while to get into this book, but once you’re invested, you’re fully invested。 This story is great for anyone who wants to learn more about how their body works, it is a well written story, that is even interesting for the most scientifically knowledgeable。

Three Words。。。Amazing! Interesting! Insightful!

Bill Bryson has yet to disappoint。 His ability to intertwine scientific facts with witty humor is unparalleled。 I chuckled aloud a good amount while reading this。The Body: A Guide for Occupants gives the reader a wonderful tour through the miraculous wonder that is the human body。 At any given moment, there are billions of cells working hard to maintain you。 Red blood cells are traveling swiftly through the veins delivering oxygen to your organs and muscles。 Your eyes are rapidly shooting back a Bill Bryson has yet to disappoint。 His ability to intertwine scientific facts with witty humor is unparalleled。 I chuckled aloud a good amount while reading this。The Body: A Guide for Occupants gives the reader a wonderful tour through the miraculous wonder that is the human body。 At any given moment, there are billions of cells working hard to maintain you。 Red blood cells are traveling swiftly through the veins delivering oxygen to your organs and muscles。 Your eyes are rapidly shooting back and forth, scanning the environment and sending those images to your brain, just so you can make sense of the world。 Bacteria in your gut are busy munching away at whatever foodstuff you just devoured。 And you gobbled down that burger because your brain told you it was time to eat, without you having to worry about setting a timer to do so。 All this happens all day every day, without you ever having to think about it。Bryon also introduces us to many different scientists and doctors that are responsible for the medicines and treatments we take for granted today。 These are the unsung heroes。 I find it a bit sad that the average person can name a celebrity but hasn't the slightest clue about who discovered penicillin or antibiotics。It was a joy reading this, and I can't wait to read another book about the body。 My lack of knowledge about the very thing that is keeping me alive and active and aware is sad! My brain is telling me "Go learn more about your body you fool!"Okay brain, I will。 。。。more

The usual Bryson style, although possibly less "jokey" than some of his others, and definitely not the same "wow" factor as A Short History。。。 nevertheless, great layman's guide to the miraculous human body, which so many of us abuse and/or take for granted。。。 I've already made some major healthy changes in the past years, but reading this just reminds us to treat our "homes" more like temples than trash cans!! Superb。 He’s got such a great way of explaining things, always putting things in to context and offering comparisons that help you comprehend。 Very educational, often funny and extremely eye opening。

There is so much interesting and amazing about the human body。 Bryson writes what is an enjoyable school textbook。 There are so many great facts, insights and thoughts。 Surely some will stick and the rest I won’t recall, however the real value in a book like this is the general sense of awe and appreciation of the body and for those who unlock its workings。

The audiobook is narrated very well! The book Itself is super interesting and full of quirky facts。

Absolutely fabulous。 Bill Bryson treats the subject matter with exactly the respect AND disrespect it deserves - funny, tragic, and infinitely "ponderable," it also conveys the folly of taking ourselves too seriously。 Absolutely fabulous。 Bill Bryson treats the subject matter with exactly the respect AND disrespect it deserves - funny, tragic, and infinitely "ponderable," it also conveys the folly of taking ourselves too seriously。 。。。more

The audiobook was very interesting and well done but it got a bit depressing for me part way through in the disease chapter, right until the chapter about death at the end。 These things are a reality so it’s really not the authors fault, but I would definitely not recommend this book for anyone with health anxiety。
