Summary

A hilariously quirky novel that is equal parts murder mystery, rom-com, and a celebration of mothers and daughters as well as a deep dive into Chinese-Indonesian culture, by debut author Jesse Q。 Sutanto。

1 (accidental) murder
2 thousand wedding guests
3 (maybe) cursed generations
4 meddling Asian aunties to the rescue!

When Meddelin Chan ends up accidentally killing her blind date, her meddlesome mother calls for her even more meddlesome aunties to help get rid of the body。 Unfortunately, a dead body proves to be a lot more challenging to dispose of than one might anticipate, especially when it is accidentally shipped in a cake cooler to the over-the-top billionaire wedding Meddy, her Ma, and aunties are working, at an island resort on the California coastline。 It’s the biggest job yet for their family wedding business—“Don’t leave your big day to chance, leave it to the Chans!”—and nothing, not even an unsavory corpse, will get in the way of her auntie’s perfect buttercream cake flowers。

But things go from inconvenient to downright torturous when Meddy’s great college love—and biggest heartbreak—makes a surprise appearance amid the wedding chaos。 Is it possible to escape murder charges, charm her ex back into her life, and pull off a stunning wedding all in one weekend?

Thank you so much @harpercollinsaustralia for the advanced copy。Dial A for Aunties was a hilarious book, about a cursed family that caused all the men to leave。 Maddy is left with her four aunt's and her mum to look out for。 Her family doesn't speak the best English and she finds herself being thrown into a blind date with a guy who her family think is great because he sent eggplant emojis and asked if she was thirsty 🤣Then she accidentally kills him and Maddy only has her aunt's left to turn to Thank you so much @harpercollinsaustralia for the advanced copy。Dial A for Aunties was a hilarious book, about a cursed family that caused all the men to leave。 Maddy is left with her four aunt's and her mum to look out for。 Her family doesn't speak the best English and she finds herself being thrown into a blind date with a guy who her family think is great because he sent eggplant emojis and asked if she was thirsty 🤣Then she accidentally kills him and Maddy only has her aunt's left to turn to。 I had a lot of laugh out loud moments with this book, and enjoyed learning about the Chinese culture but a lot of the little things did go over my head at times。 I would of liked more explanation and a little deeper character development but overall it was a fun read to break up some of the serious books I've been reading lately。I would definitely recommend for someone who wants a light, quick, funny read。 。。。more

This was such a delightful reading。 I loved it to bits with its humour and such a intertaining story。 Love interest wasn't as strong part of it but absolutely sweet。 This was such a delightful reading。 I loved it to bits with its humour and such a intertaining story。 Love interest wasn't as strong part of it but absolutely sweet。 。。。more

I loved this book! Romances aren’t my go to genre but I needed a light read and this was it! It was so funny and had so many twists and turns that were often crazier than the last that kept me wanting more。 It was a beautiful story about family and I can’t wait for the sequel to come out so I can catch up with this witty group of women。

This was SO DANG FUN。 If you're in the mood for pure chaotic hijinks, this is for you。 It's listed as a romance, but I'd say this is first and foremost a chaotic comedy with romance sprinkled in to create even MORE chaos。 This isn't realistic by any means, but this book is a great time and I highly recommend。 This was SO DANG FUN。 If you're in the mood for pure chaotic hijinks, this is for you。 It's listed as a romance, but I'd say this is first and foremost a chaotic comedy with romance sprinkled in to create even MORE chaos。 This isn't realistic by any means, but this book is a great time and I highly recommend。 。。。more

Meddelin Chan's mom calls her aunties when Meddelin accidentally ends up killing her blind date。 They agree to help her get rid of the body, but accidentally put the body in the cake cooler。 The bad news is that the cake cooler is on its way to a wedding that Meddelin, her mom, and her aunties are working! This isn't a genre I usually read and it's rare for me to really like a romance book。。。BUT this one was so entertaining and a nice break from my usual reads! This romance/cozy mystery/comedy might just win my heart yet, but I can't quite get my head around it。 There was a lot happening, and the story rushed by a lot faster than I expected。 And while it was good fun, there was a lot of things in this book that were so ridiculous that I have trouble thinking about them。 This book was across between the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella (zany screwball comedy with a bit of romance) and Weekend at Bernie's (hiding a dead body in plain sight) with some This romance/cozy mystery/comedy might just win my heart yet, but I can't quite get my head around it。 There was a lot happening, and the story rushed by a lot faster than I expected。 And while it was good fun, there was a lot of things in this book that were so ridiculous that I have trouble thinking about them。 This book was across between the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella (zany screwball comedy with a bit of romance) and Weekend at Bernie's (hiding a dead body in plain sight) with some Crazy Rich Asians mixed in (colorful Asian family, swearing in Hokkien and Mandarin)。It was cute though, and a very sweet story of a young woman who is supported by the will and ingenuity of her mother and her aunts。 When Meddy accidentally kills a blind date who seems determined to rape her, her family comes to the rescue, leading to a weekend of chaos and close calls。 In the midst of all this Meddy is unexpectedly reunited with her ex boyfriend。 As stated, there was a lot in this story that seemed so stupid it was hard to stomach。 WHY would you hide a dead body in your bakery???? WHY would you refuse to tell your mother about your amazing boyfriend???? WHY is pretending a dead body is just some drunk guest a brilliant idea???? But if everyone listened to me, we wouldn't have a plot as my husband is fond of saying。 There is enough in this book to keep it going。 The scene with the tea ceremony gifts honestly had me biting my nails in anxiety。 I loved that Meddy had fallen in love with a hot guy from Hong Kong。 I freaking loved her aunts。 I am thrilled there is a Netflix movie in the works, and a sequel coming soon。 Yes, there were moments of stupidity but there was plenty of heart to save this book。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I'm not rating this book as its not fair to the author that I'm not big on cozies and this was closer to cozy than thriller。 It seemed to leap genres (it was funny but there's a dead body and meddling older Asian people and a long lost love?) but I did enjoy the aunties。 it was cute, just not my speed。 I'm not rating this book as its not fair to the author that I'm not big on cozies and this was closer to cozy than thriller。 It seemed to leap genres (it was funny but there's a dead body and meddling older Asian people and a long lost love?) but I did enjoy the aunties。 it was cute, just not my speed。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 For the most part, I very much enjoyed reading this。 If you just go ahead from the start and put your suspension of disbelief at full power and accept the story for what it is, it's absolutely delightful entertainment。The story and its characters are charming and genuinely funny。 Despite the fact that there's murder in the mix, while not exactly fluff, I spent the largest part of the book laughing at the antics *and trust me, antics is entirely accurate, LOL* of this warm, rowdy Indo- 3。5 stars。 For the most part, I very much enjoyed reading this。 If you just go ahead from the start and put your suspension of disbelief at full power and accept the story for what it is, it's absolutely delightful entertainment。The story and its characters are charming and genuinely funny。 Despite the fact that there's murder in the mix, while not exactly fluff, I spent the largest part of the book laughing at the antics *and trust me, antics is entirely accurate, LOL* of this warm, rowdy Indo-Chinese American family。Meddy is in the family business of wedding services provider with her mother and 3 aunties。 Of all the cousins, she is the only child who stayed home with the family。 And not exactly because she wanted to but because she felt the responsibility of family obligation。 She didn't want to disappoint her Ma or her aunties, all of whom she loves and respects。 I positively loved Meddy's family, despite the fact that they really are all in her business。 I mean, that's what family does, like it or not。 Meddy's Ma and all the aunties take it to a whole other level though! 😂😂 All the same, when she comes to them in a serious fix from a blind date gone really, really wrong, her family doesn't hesitate to help Meddy out。 No matter how hilariously wrong this help ends up going, they never question whether they should help or give up。 🥰Those are all the good things。 Unfortunately, the story fell a little flat for me in places, most notably with Meddy herself。 I admit part of that just might be me (view spoiler)[because the "leaving you because it's for your own good" thing never fails to infuriate me。 Even though she also partly didn't want to leave her family, I felt like the real issue was because she thought he might give up the job if he knew。 It makes my head want to explode when MCs don't let their other half make their own damn decisions, ugh。 (hide spoiler)] However, some of the decisions she makes, and the way she unhappily martyrs herself made me extremely impatient with her and hard for me to be sympathetic。 I also was unhappy with how completely Meddy's ex, Nathan, was so instantly ready to fall back back in a relationship with her after not one word of contact for four years。 (view spoiler)[After what Meddy did to him and how she did it, she needed to do some major groveling。 It was completely unrealistic for him to be so okay with everything。 I wanted her to grovel anyway, but I am so not the easily forgiving type, LOL。 (hide spoiler)]But in the scheme of things, these are really minor niggles, as none of them kept me from enjoying the book。 As I said, check that realism at the door and this story is one hell of a lot of fun。 ❤ 。。。more

5 fantastic stars! This book was such a delight。 It was funny and ludicrous and actually heartwarming, even given the fact that it is about hiding a dead body。 I really want Aunties like that in my life! I was also excited to see when I got to the end that there will be another book - I will absolutely buy it!

Dollycas’s ThoughtsOh my, this is satire at its finest。 Jesse Q。 Sutanto sure knows how to bring the funny。Meddelin Chan is part of her family’s wedding business。 She photographs the event from start to finish and with Indonesian – Chinese weddings that entails a lot。 “Big Aunt” makes the luscious cakes, “Aunt 2” is in charge of hair and make-up。 Meddie’s mother takes care of all the flowers and “Aunt 4” sings, providing entertainment。 Together all five of them try to hide a body but wait, I am Dollycas’s ThoughtsOh my, this is satire at its finest。 Jesse Q。 Sutanto sure knows how to bring the funny。Meddelin Chan is part of her family’s wedding business。 She photographs the event from start to finish and with Indonesian – Chinese weddings that entails a lot。 “Big Aunt” makes the luscious cakes, “Aunt 2” is in charge of hair and make-up。 Meddie’s mother takes care of all the flowers and “Aunt 4” sings, providing entertainment。 Together all five of them try to hide a body but wait, I am getting ahead of myself。Meddy’s mother is so worried about her daughter’s love life that with some help from her meddlesome aunts she sets Meddy up on a dating site and pretends to be her。 Meddy finds out when she learns she has a blind date with a man her mother feels is perfect。 Sadly the date doesn’t go well and Meddelin accidentally kills the man and could have killed herself。 But she survives and makes it home with the date in the trunk of the car。 With a huge wedding the next day they try to keep the body on ice until after the event but due to circumstances beyond their control that darn body ends up at the wedding site。 What ensues is a wild ride of a story I could not put down。 Heck, Meddy’s college boyfriend even enters the scene and plays an integral part。Okay, you need to suspend reality while reading this story but you will catch yourself laughing out loud and immersed in a wonderful escape。Meddy is the dutiful daughter and “Ma” and her Aunties are an absolute hoot! The Chans are a close family and there is so much love there。 The Auntie’s get a little snippy with each other but they truly support each other even when it comes to getting rid of a dead body。 These characters practically jump off the page。 The dialogue which includes a little bickering just sings。 I laughed so hard when Meddy and her aunties had to explain to Ma the text messages she had received from the man she set her daughter up with。The story had a few Weekend At Bernie’s movie moments too as we moved to the wedding part of the story。 That poor dead body turned up in some surprising places。But the story isn’t all laughs。 We get a nice look at the traditions and stress of an Indo-Chinese wedding。 I really felt for the bride as certain things came to light。I loved the twist that brought Meddy’s college boyfriend, Nathan Chan back into the story and the little flashbacks to their previous relationship。 Don’t worry Chan is like Smith in the Indo-Chinese world so they are not related。I absolutely loved everything about this story and I was thrilled to read it is going to be adapted into a movie on NetFlix。 It was such a wonderful escape I have to give it my highest – deserves more than 5 stars – Paradise Rating。 Dial A for Aunties is a fantastic story full of delightfully quirky characters that I wish I could meet in person。 Crazy chaos overtakes these pages and will have readers grinning ear to ear。 Fun and entertaining。 A must-read!*Note: The book does include explicit language。 。。。more

This book is pure chaos and hilarity and family and lemme just say, I have seen a few complaints—but for me? This book was a sheer delight, 10/10 would read again and will probably be obsessed with the film when it comes out。

This was hilarious, surprising and refreshing。 You do have to forgive that a dead human was used as a tool for this comedy of errors。 The Aunties steal the show and brought joy to every page。 I hope this becomes a movie and they don’t change a thing。 It should be 5 star for comedic Indo Chinese culture genius, but well。。 it’s still a dead human I felt a little bad。

This really was such a fun reading experience, you know when you find a book that just makes you laugh at all the absurdities well Dial A for Aunties is that book。 It just had all the right elements to make it a loveable, hilarious and gripping read。It’s the kind of story that makes me feel like I want to tell you all the funny bits where I was actually laughing out loud so that we can share in how amusing it was together but, of course, I also don’t want to spoil the book for you either。 What I This really was such a fun reading experience, you know when you find a book that just makes you laugh at all the absurdities well Dial A for Aunties is that book。 It just had all the right elements to make it a loveable, hilarious and gripping read。It’s the kind of story that makes me feel like I want to tell you all the funny bits where I was actually laughing out loud so that we can share in how amusing it was together but, of course, I also don’t want to spoil the book for you either。 What I will say is that even though there is a murder at the heart of this story rest assured it doesn’t take itself too seriously and you will soon be pulled into the antics and misadventure of Meddy, her mum and her aunties。I loved learning about Meddy’s Chinese and Indonesian heritage and how she is constantly juggling who she wants to be against making her family proud。 I can’t say too much about it but her romantic entanglements feel like they are all doomed which makes it quite funny but also makes you really on her side and hoping that she will get through everything kind of unscathed。 The growth that Meddy has as a character is fascinating, she starts out as a kind of unwitting wrong place wrong time character and ends up managing to manipulate situations to her advantage, but in a kind of unlikely way, which makes her even more loveable。Her mum and the aunts were hilarious and I loved their bickering and one-upmanship with each other because at the end of the day the reader knows that they would really do anything for each other。 Even though they were mostly known by their place in the family rather than by name, their personalities really shone through and it always made me smile how unpredictable they would be, they never reacted the way I expected。If you are looking for a funny and unexpected story with loveable characters that find themselves in an outrageous situation then you’ll love Dial A for Aunties。Originally posted on everywhere and nowhere 。。。more

Dial A for Aunties needs to be the book you read for 2021。 This reminded me of an Asian version of the movie, Weekend at Bernie's。 This book was part mayhem, hijinks, love story and family obligations all rolled into one。 Meddelin (Meddy) Chan's mom and aunties are the stars of this book。 Those ladies reminded me so much of my mom and her sisters。 I did not want this book to end。 Page after page was one more outrageous catastrophe after another。 Meddy's mother wanted her to date。 So Mama Chan de Dial A for Aunties needs to be the book you read for 2021。 This reminded me of an Asian version of the movie, Weekend at Bernie's。 This book was part mayhem, hijinks, love story and family obligations all rolled into one。 Meddelin (Meddy) Chan's mom and aunties are the stars of this book。 Those ladies reminded me so much of my mom and her sisters。 I did not want this book to end。 Page after page was one more outrageous catastrophe after another。 Meddy's mother wanted her to date。 So Mama Chan decided to set up a dating profile for Meddy and arranged a date! Meddy went on this date! Now if my mother even tried some mess like this there would have been no date period! The date was awful and Meddy accidentally kills him。 If this isn't horrible enough, she goes home and tells her mother。 Her mother then calls the aunties。 Lord, when Big Auntie, Second Auntie and Fourth Auntie arrive the shenanigans ensue。 Not to mention they operate a wedding business together。 Weddings and dead bodies do not mix。 I definitely need a series with Meddy, her mother and all her aunties。 This was such a fun book!!!!! I need more ASAP。 Thank you Netgalley for this wonderful ARC。 。。。more
