Summary

Shocking his stodgy colleagues at the exclusive Reform Club, enigmatic Englishman Phileas Fogg wagers his fortune, undertaking an extraordinary and daring enterprise: to circumnavigate the globe in eighty days。 With his French valet Passepartout in tow, Verne’s hero traverses the far reaches of the earth, all the while tracked by the intrepid Detective Fix, a bounty hunter certain he is on the trail of a notorious bank robber。 Set from the text of George M。 Towle’s original 1873 translation, this Modern Library Paperback Classic of Verne’s adventure novel comes vividly alive, brilliantly reflecting on time, space, and one man’s struggle to reach beyond the bounds of both science and society。

Thrilling and Exciting adventure around the World!!This book is is a fabulous recounting of Phileas Fogg's journey around the world。 It contained wonderful descriptions of attempts to cross the world in the 19th century when this story was set。These are for example by steamer and by train which were available in the 19th century。This book is excellently written and is easy to read。 All its descriptions and prose are not difficult to follow。This book is a fantastic story and is recommended to oth Thrilling and Exciting adventure around the World!!This book is is a fabulous recounting of Phileas Fogg's journey around the world。 It contained wonderful descriptions of attempts to cross the world in the 19th century when this story was set。These are for example by steamer and by train which were available in the 19th century。This book is excellently written and is easy to read。 All its descriptions and prose are not difficult to follow。This book is a fantastic story and is recommended to others to share the great experiences had by Philleas Fogg!!It served to be a brilliant accompaniment to the David Niven movie of the same name。 。。。more

Une belle histoire, un beau voyage qui donne envie de suivre le chemin de ce grand fou !

Very, very geographical, ironic I know!!! The story lost pace a lot because of all the geographical references。 Great detective type character。 Well written ending, just wish the whole story had been like it。。。。

So fun。 First time so I had no idea what to expect。 Read aloud with my seven year old and he loved it too! A classic, but I knocked it down to four stars because some parts were long-winded and/or culturally awkward for today’s reader。 Still, highly enjoyable。 Laugh out loud funny, and eyes-wide surprising。

this was such a cute book。 so wholesome。 very old fashioned, but I loved it。 providing that touch of ~wanderlust~ for a post-COVID-induced-travel-ban world。 very precious, and would recommend。

Still good after all these years。 Well written well edited well designed。 A fun book to reread or listen to with your wife。 The actor performing the voices on this reading was very good and got the accents right in my opinion。

My whole childhood in one book。 I remember the astonishing stories of Jules Verne and the way he knew everything about every part of out world made me speechless。 Jules Vernes was a person, who didn’t travel much, but yet he made these amazing, informative stories for kinds to learn about all continents and parts of our Planted, as well as different cultures。 Truly a lovable author 🗺📖💌

This is a interesting novel。 It consist of only 83 pages and very interesting to read where mr。 fogg will go next。 And it is exciting to know whether he will able to keep his promise of travelling “The World in just 80 Days”It is very interesting and can read in one go。

I had to read this book for school and I absolutely HATED IT! It is so slow and so hard to get through, very boring。 I can usually push through a book but every time we had to read in class I blanked out。 I don’t recommend this book and if you have to read this, I’m sorry。

It’s a good story, but there are definitely some stereotypes of not-British culture that haven’t aged well。

I am convinced Jules Verne looked at some maps and wrote an entire book about them。 While the characters do traverse the globe, it’s less about the journey than it is the destination。 The whole reason Phileas Fogg embarks on the 80-day trip is to settle a bet - and because of that, there is hardly any time to delve into the scenery。 There are more descriptors of his travels through Europe and Asia than in America (a lot of the American part is “from this place to another place is 735 miles of fl I am convinced Jules Verne looked at some maps and wrote an entire book about them。 While the characters do traverse the globe, it’s less about the journey than it is the destination。 The whole reason Phileas Fogg embarks on the 80-day trip is to settle a bet - and because of that, there is hardly any time to delve into the scenery。 There are more descriptors of his travels through Europe and Asia than in America (a lot of the American part is “from this place to another place is 735 miles of flat land - oh and some Indians attacked”), but even then it is rushed because Fogg is trying to make his way around the world in a set amount of time, with no room for tourism, so we as readers don’t get to see all the wonders of the world through the eyes of these characters。Phileas Fogg is an awful main character - though it can be argued that his assistant Passepartout is the actual main character because it is mostly his narrative about Phileas Fogg and their travels together。 Fogg is rude, standoffish, unemotional, and unwavering。 I think it’s supposed to make him mysterious, but it comes off as very boring。The other “main” male characters - Passepartout and Fix - are more well-developed, but barely。 The female character who pops up, Aouda, is basically there to be the damsel in distress and nothing else。Some parts of the book did interest me, like learning about different cultures (although some/most were stereotypes about different cultures, but hey, it was written in the 19th century) and I was mildly interested to see if Fogg would accomplish his mission。 Those are the only saving graces from me giving this book one star。 。。。more

I didn't dislike this piece but it was evidently written for a different era, I was not fond of the writing style, however, it did have merit and I understand how it has been a favourite and classic piece。 This novel was not my cup of tea personally but I will not reproach anyone wishing to read it, it's certainly interesting and doesn't take long。 I didn't dislike this piece but it was evidently written for a different era, I was not fond of the writing style, however, it did have merit and I understand how it has been a favourite and classic piece。 This novel was not my cup of tea personally but I will not reproach anyone wishing to read it, it's certainly interesting and doesn't take long。 。。。more

Wow。 This is quite the adventure! My dad read this aloud to me and my siblings when I was young, and I'm surprised that I remembered almost the whole plot from that reading。But that did not diminish the enjoyment of this reading in the least。~What can I say? Simply brilliant! I'm reading four Jules Verne books。 I thought 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea would be the best。 I was wrong。 Around the World in Eighty Days defeats it in every way。 It had humor, suspense, and fun。 I enjoyed every moment and can't wait to watch the various movies。 I'm especially curious about the Jackie Chan one。 Jules Verne was way ahead of his time with his stories。 I'm glad I finally got around to giving them a chance。 Simply brilliant! A few years ago, I thought it would be a good idea to learn French。 My primary reasoning, at the time, was to be able to read Jules Verne in his native language。 It started when I wanted to read “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” and, after reading some review stumbled upon how wildly different the translations can be。 (See http://www。najvs。org/works/V002_VC。shtml for more info)Well, I didn’t learn to speak or read French and instead decided to look up several versions of “Around the World in A few years ago, I thought it would be a good idea to learn French。 My primary reasoning, at the time, was to be able to read Jules Verne in his native language。 It started when I wanted to read “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” and, after reading some review stumbled upon how wildly different the translations can be。 (See http://www。najvs。org/works/V002_VC。shtml for more info)Well, I didn’t learn to speak or read French and instead decided to look up several versions of “Around the World in 80 Days” before reading it。 I found three, each different enough。 I consulted all three as I read the story over these couple of days。 The story remains great however the words are translated into English。 Several times I consulted the printed book and compared to the e-book I read on my iPad。 Verbs were altered and descriptions were reworked; the iPad’s version said things with far more of an exciting prose。 Certain phrases, including the pinnacle of the story remain unchanged, so I imagine they translate exactly? I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure。 Jules Verne’s work, even translated into English, created a sense of urgency throughout: that race against time is real。 Traveling “around the world” instills a purpose and motivation that is clear and real。 It’s not lost or watered down by simplistic plot vices。 There is, like many of Verne’s work, a great attention to detail and facts。 His facts and figures add to the realism, and his descriptions along the Transcontinental railroad described America’s West quite accurately。 I recommend reading this on an iPad。 It was both fun and educational to follow along using the Apple Maps application。 Also several times, I found myself researching one thing or another。 I also liked keeping a bookmark on page 16 so I could easily refer back to the original plan made at the club。 P。S。 Even if I don’t learn French, I do still very much want to learn how to play whist。 。。。more

I did quite enjoy this book, although the way it was written took some getting used to。 Perhaps it was more 'fluent' in the original French。 Phileas Fogg was an intriguing character, as was Passepartout, and I loved how their interactions developed through the storyline。 They are both very complex characters, as were Inspector Fix and Aouda。 The end came as a bit of a shock。 I should have seen it coming but I didn't expect it。 The constant way that Fogg overcame the obstacles put in his way prov I did quite enjoy this book, although the way it was written took some getting used to。 Perhaps it was more 'fluent' in the original French。 Phileas Fogg was an intriguing character, as was Passepartout, and I loved how their interactions developed through the storyline。 They are both very complex characters, as were Inspector Fix and Aouda。 The end came as a bit of a shock。 I should have seen it coming but I didn't expect it。 The constant way that Fogg overcame the obstacles put in his way provided some comic moments, like the elephant and land sledge。 But it felt as though it was rushed at points。 However, I certainly can't complain that the story slowed down at any point! The story takes place all over the world - in England, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, and America。 In a time where a lot of the world is under lockdown being able to travel around the world in a book is an interesting perception。 。。。more
