If you love fantasy - you'll love the Mistborn series。 Brandon Sanderson is a master at creating magic systems that are both logical and interesting。 There are great characters, exciting storylines, and a fascinating setting。 I've really enjoyed his books, and out of all of his series, the first Mistborn series is my favorite。 If you love fantasy - you'll love the Mistborn series。 Brandon Sanderson is a master at creating magic systems that are both logical and interesting。 There are great characters, exciting storylines, and a fascinating setting。 I've really enjoyed his books, and out of all of his series, the first Mistborn series is my favorite。 。。。more

A little, but again the McNuggets metaphor。Pros: dope magic system, cool plot, fun action sequences Cons: characters aren’t memorable, simply written, long and only the first in a trilogy。 Last one isn’t a con if you aren’t a slowish reader like ya boi 。。。more

It has some really good things, like its rhyme and it keeps your interest with a story with some feep and interesting themes。Its magical system is really interesting and you can be satisfied with only this book without reading further into the trilogy which is a plus。

It's clear that Sanderson can only write one type of book, but for what it is, it was quite enjoyable。 The magic system is basically exactly the same as the one in the Stormlight Archive, which was kind of funny。 None of the characters are that well developed and are essentially variations on archetypes he has used in other books。 He really excels at sustaining large coalescing plot lines (even if they are all kind of rooted in the same ideas) and to some extent interesting world building (even It's clear that Sanderson can only write one type of book, but for what it is, it was quite enjoyable。 The magic system is basically exactly the same as the one in the Stormlight Archive, which was kind of funny。 None of the characters are that well developed and are essentially variations on archetypes he has used in other books。 He really excels at sustaining large coalescing plot lines (even if they are all kind of rooted in the same ideas) and to some extent interesting world building (even if the exposition can be painfully heavy handed)。 Also the action and fight sequences are pretty fun to read。 Dialogue, characterization, and writing style, could use some work though。Final note - how did his editor let him use the word maladroitly so many times。 。。。more

The type of story that makes you sad you’ll never experience it for the first time again。 The ending was a wild ride; the reveals just kept coming! Loved the pacing that intentionally developed the characters, world building, political plot, and magic system。 In terms of the writing style, I appreciated the lack of flowery prose, but I prefer a more ‘show rather than tell’ style and a little more depth。 The characters were also trope-heavy, but I felt that they were done well enough。 Although th The type of story that makes you sad you’ll never experience it for the first time again。 The ending was a wild ride; the reveals just kept coming! This first book was the best in the series。 I'm a long-time Sanderson fan。 But overall with this series, I found myself bored, and losing attention。 I never expect a Sanderson story to be predictable, but many times this one was。 And the battle scenes just seemed to go on forever in minute detail, and were so repetitive (every push and pull on every metal became tiresome and redundant)。 So I'll give it a mediocre "like。" This first book was the best in the series。 I'm a long-time Sanderson fan。 But overall with this series, I found myself bored, and losing attention。 I never expect a Sanderson story to be predictable, but many times this one was。 And the battle scenes just seemed to go on forever in minute detail, and were so repetitive (every push and pull on every metal became tiresome and redundant)。 So I'll give it a mediocre "like。" 。。。more

4。5 rounded up to 5。 This was a hard book for me to rate。 The prologue had me gripped instantly and I was desperate to read more。 The book lulled for a little then as Sanderson built up the world and the magic system。 I enjoyed it, but I wasn't as gripped as I had been by the prologue。 I think for me, the heist plot wasn't as strong as I would have liked。 I love the idea of taking down the empire in a heist themed way, but unfortunately for me I think the plans felt a little flimsy and meanderin 4。5 rounded up to 5。 This was a hard book for me to rate。 The prologue had me gripped instantly and I was desperate to read more。 The book lulled for a little then as Sanderson built up the world and the magic system。 I enjoyed it, but I wasn't as gripped as I had been by the prologue。 I think for me, the heist plot wasn't as strong as I would have liked。 I love the idea of taking down the empire in a heist themed way, but unfortunately for me I think the plans felt a little flimsy and meandering。 I struggled to believe that pulling those plans off, would actually result in what they wanted。 I also found myself more and more throughout the book wanting to only read about Vin。 I think that it would have been stronger if we didn't get any scenes from Kelsier's POV。 He was interesting, and a great character, but part of the suspense was wondering about his plan and whether or not he was doing the right thing or becoming like the Lord Ruler。 Having glimpses into his head somewhat ruined this for me。The last third or so though was excellent。 Sanderson writes action scenes extremely well and I was hooked throughout this part of the book - I couldn't put it down! All in all, I have to ask myself if I am excited to read the next instalment and my answer is an irrefutable YES! 。。。more

If you're here you likely don't need me to tell you that this is a good book。 I read it because I heard the same refrains countless times, that it is a stunning piece of fantasy fiction, well written and engaging。 You've likely heard the same, and it probably won't shock you to learn that it's all quite true。 Sanderson is an absolute master of writing, and it is evident here。 With Mistborn, he has created a world unlike any other I've read or known, something that is both terrifying and beautifu If you're here you likely don't need me to tell you that this is a good book。 I read it because I heard the same refrains countless times, that it is a stunning piece of fantasy fiction, well written and engaging。 You've likely heard the same, and it probably won't shock you to learn that it's all quite true。 Sanderson is an absolute master of writing, and it is evident here。 With Mistborn, he has created a world unlike any other I've read or known, something that is both terrifying and beautiful, interesting and almost painful to behold。 The characters he writes feel real and alive at every turn。 They make mistakes, they have passions, they have goals, and they don't always do what's smart, good, or even logical。 But they do feel correct。 They feel like people, through and through。 The world itself is yet another grand character, full of twists and turns and uncertainties, each of which makes you keep reading。 And at the core of it all a system of magic with rules that are well defined and structured。 Unique, gripping, and fascinating this book has just about everything, and is itself a complete story, even with two sequels waiting behind it。 You will come to love and understand many of the characters, and you will want nothing more than to protect them, as they protect and save each other。 You will worry, you will cheer, you will gasp in shock and you will be afraid。 And it will all be glorious。 If you are looking for a fantasy book to read, I don't think I can recommend this one highly enough。 It will keep you guessing right up to the final pages, and I for one can't wait to get my hands on the rest of them。 And do remember, there is always another secret。 。。。more

This book was definitely a little slow, perhaps methodical is a better word, in the set up which honestly seems to be a trend for Sanderson (I'm looking at you Elantris)。 But as with his other books, the world building is impeccable。 The story and characters drag you in and stick their little hooks in you so that by the middle of the book, things are moving along at a good clip and by the end you are on the edge of your seat。 It feels a bit like watching someone set up a really elaborate picture This book was definitely a little slow, perhaps methodical is a better word, in the set up which honestly seems to be a trend for Sanderson (I'm looking at you Elantris)。 But as with his other books, the world building is impeccable。 The story and characters drag you in and stick their little hooks in you so that by the middle of the book, things are moving along at a good clip and by the end you are on the edge of your seat。 It feels a bit like watching someone set up a really elaborate picture with dominos, but the satisfaction of the cascade effect is usually enough to make up for the agonizing beginning。 I feel like Vin didn't really start coming into her own as a character until she started going out as Valette。 That's where the story really picked up interest for me。 Also, and I can't quite put my finger on why, but she doesn't feel distinctly female in any sense。 It works in the story, it isn't a huge detractor or anything, I just found it interesting/curious。 Sure, technically the story has a 'Strong female protagonist' but it definitely doesn't give off the same vibes as other books or series that hit that same category。 I'd be interested if anyone else felt the same so hit me up with your thoughts。 The gritty setting bothered me much more the first time I started reading it a couple years ago (didn't really get past the first hundred pages) but by the second time I picked it up I was more resigned to it and it didn't bring me down as much。 There's not really that much of a romantic love interest in this book, but I appreciate the small scraps tossed my way even if it does feel a bit underdeveloped。 Maybe we'll see more in the next few books。 I guess I can finally return by two weeks over due copy to the library and pick up the next one instead! Hopefully it will take me less time to get into。One last note: Can we talk about cover art? The one illustrated cover is very busy and confusing but not in a good way。 The other with Vin on the cover gives off a very early 2000s vibe and isn't really how I picture her at all。 I'd love to see some updated covers for this series。 。。。more

There wouldn't be sufficient words to describe the beauty and the genius this first instalment in the Mistborn trilogy is so charmingly infused with。If, at first sight, Sanderson seems to be clearly indebted to the greatest, timeless and inescapable fantasy tropes which made this genre so unique and successful, after a deeper read it couldn't be denied to what extent he chooses to take his own road and give life to a story, a worldbuilding which is capable of shining with its own personality; wi There wouldn't be sufficient words to describe the beauty and the genius this first instalment in the Mistborn trilogy is so charmingly infused with。If, at first sight, Sanderson seems to be clearly indebted to the greatest, timeless and inescapable fantasy tropes which made this genre so unique and successful, after a deeper read it couldn't be denied to what extent he chooses to take his own road and give life to a story, a worldbuilding which is capable of shining with its own personality; with a captivating hard magic system which, over time, has become one of Sanderson's workhorses。Sanderson depicts a very peculiar, bleak, mournful world where ashes fall and the mists are so thick that they blur and distort your vision and your heart。 It is a world where tyranny prevails, where the hierarchy of a "feudal-like" system is so cumbersome and oppressive。It is a world where being logic, rational and scheming is almost to be preferred to being more sympathetic and heartful。This is why Sanderson's "outsiders" (those refusing the ones in power) are such fascinating, complex and well-developped characters: they fight for what they truly are, yet they go through an incredible evolution in terms of discovery of their powers, their limits and the ability to organise in minute details。Sanderson's magic system is so peculiar: the fact of using metals to gain one's strength and power, and to control emotions is second to no one。 He's so accurate in describing in details these powers and all their lights and shades。Last but not least, Sanderson's meditation on the effects of tyranny and bad governance of the usurper and the trickster, opposed the thin line separating it from an alleged good and righteous governance of the valiant and rightful sovereign is so dear to Tolkien's vision: there's no knowing whether the legitimate and better ruler, when drawn into the game, would fall prey to corruption or remain pure。The Final Empire proves itself to be a perfect atmospheric forerunner for a trilogy so rich in great premises。 Yet, the rhythm of this first novel is so intense, eventful and full of twists and deep moments。 It is a story of courage, difficult choices, political intrigue, meditations on the ties that bind and power abuse。 It is a story in which fight and executions scenes are memorable, gruesome, brutal, yet so rich in epicity。In the ages to come, Mistborn will certainly become one of the cornerstones of modern fantasy。 。。。more
