Summary

They say that the Thorn of Camorr can beat anyone in a fight。 They say he steals from the rich and gives to the poor。 They say he's part man, part myth, and mostly street-corner rumor。 And they are wrong on every count。

Only averagely tall, slender, and god-awful with a sword, Locke Lamora is the fabled Thorn, and the greatest weapons at his disposal are his wit and cunning。 He steals from the rich - they're the only ones worth stealing from - but the poor can go steal for themselves。 What Locke cons, wheedles and tricks into his possession is strictly for him and his band of fellow con-artists and thieves: the Gentleman Bastards。

Together their domain is the city of Camorr。 Built of Elderglass by a race no-one remembers, it's a city of shifting revels, filthy canals, baroque palaces and crowded cemeteries。 Home to Dons, merchants, soldiers, beggars, cripples, and feral children。 And to Capa Barsavi, the criminal mastermind who runs the city。

But there are whispers of a challenge to the Capa's power。 A challenge from a man no one has ever seen, a man no blade can touch。 The Grey King is coming。

A man would be well advised not to be caught between Capa Barsavi and The Grey King。 Even such a master of the sword as the Thorn of Camorr。 As for Locke Lamora 。。。

“To us — richer and cleverer than everyone else!”Actual rating: 4。5/5 starsThe Lies of Locke Lamora has been one of my most sought-out fantasy novels to read after it being highly recommended by a handful of friends - and I am so glad they were right, and I did enjoy myself greatly while reading this。 This has also been a very beloved book within the fantasy community, and as the author's first published work, I am very impressed。 This book follows the tale of a small con-artist group named “To us — richer and cleverer than everyone else!”Actual rating: 4。5/5 starsThe Lies of Locke Lamora has been one of my most sought-out fantasy novels to read after it being highly recommended by a handful of friends - and I am so glad they were right, and I did enjoy myself greatly while reading this。 This has also been a very beloved book within the fantasy community, and as the author's first published work, I am very impressed。 This book follows the tale of a small con-artist group named The Gentleman Bastards spearheaded by the genius Locke Lamora who operate in huge schemes targeting the noblemen in an Venetian-inspired island called Camorr。 Story-wise, the book started off a bit slow for me, especially with how things and events were being introduced。 But after 100 pages or so, everything was already so easily placed and understandable that it had been an easy-paced read already with very smooth transitions, and even bigger and wilder twists along the way。 While the slight "old school" type of prose and dialogue may hinder some readers, it eventually gets better and it just makes sense in the over-all scheme of the book。 One of the things about the way the book was written was how the two timelines of the story (the main one and the interludes) were so out of place at first, but they all suddenly made sense towards the end。 To have those events finally explain (and even hint at) what was going on with the book was so satisfying, and everything just makes so much more sense。 Even the schemes and tricks Locke and the other Gentleman Bastards were doing just fell into place with ease, and it was super fun to watch it all unfold。 The world-building and atmosphere in this book was phenomenal。 Everything was described really well - even down to the food and trinkets mentioned。 It also helped me lot that this book has a heavy Venetian culture inspiration, so imagining things weren't that difficult。 If you want a very immersive book in terms of its setting, this one is probably for you。 It never shied away from both the opulence and luxury of the upper-class locations and the grunge and filth of those in the lower class sectors。 But of course my absolute most favorite thing about this book were the characters and their dynamics。 The small troop that is the Gentleman Bastards have immediately caught my attention and heart the moment they were first plotting out their plans from the very first page。 They're just all so charismatic, smart, funny, and quirky that it is not hard to like them。 While Locke Lamora's brains and skills were put to the centerstage and I adored him as a character, the other members of the gang were just as equally charming with their own set of talents and skills。 The relationship dynamics in the group is just so spot-on for me, and I really enjoyed them more as a group than alone。 Even their dynamics with their peers, enemies, and victims were just as equally enjoyable to read。 Over-all, I was so satisfied with this book, and I am already eager to get on with the next book to see what the Gentleman Bastards have in store。 。。。more

"The Lies of Locke Lamora" follows the adventures of a young man called Locke Lamora & his group of friends。 They are a gang of thieves in the fantastical setting of Camorr。From the get go, this is a beautifully written book; Lynch built a very vivid and pintoresque world (I fell in love with his descriptions of the Elderglass and how it's used in the city) while also showing us very ugly and gritty parts of it。 It can get overtly descriptive, as fantasy books tend to do, and it was a particular "The Lies of Locke Lamora" follows the adventures of a young man called Locke Lamora & his group of friends。 They are a gang of thieves in the fantastical setting of Camorr。From the get go, this is a beautifully written book; Lynch built a very vivid and pintoresque world (I fell in love with his descriptions of the Elderglass and how it's used in the city) while also showing us very ugly and gritty parts of it。 It can get overtly descriptive, as fantasy books tend to do, and it was a particular struggle for me, being that English is not my first language, so I had to pause and googl a lot of words all the time (lots of boat vocabulary too fellas!), but those two are my main complaints, which have nothing to do with the story itself。 Lynch's prose is beautiful, I have to say that。 The dialogue was witty & funny, very enjoyable, and the writing just sucks you into their world, it's very vivid。 The story itself is very fast-paced, Locke just keeps getting into more & more shit。。。 I wanna discuss (spoilers from here on!!!) how similar locke & the gray king are in their morality。 If Locke's friends had been slain in a similar fashion to how TGK's family was, he would've plotted against the Camorri nobles as well; hell, he likes to play them just for the sake of it。 The difference is that idt Locke would kill people who had nothing to do with it, but let us not forget that TGK had 20+ years for his hatred to ripen。。。 who knows what would happen to locke in that situation。。。 idk I thought it was neat, I always like when the bad guy is a twisted reflection of the hero, it just feeds my soul <3 & i mean locke did went berserk after his fellow gentlemen were murdered (that was so sad :( calo & galdo。。。 and BUG 3) but yeaaaa i think there's def tons of similarities btw TGK & locke :-)Another thing I loved was the dynamic between the GB, particularly btw Jean & Locke。 It's such a wholesome friendship, they cherish each other so much, would literally die for each other, my sweet children! i love them! Jean's character was so good too, big buff guy whose very name invokes fear & makes grown mess piss their pants but he carries his romance novels around。。。 I love him。 In general, the found-family trope was very well developed and implemented, (view spoiler)[it was tough to see the Sanzas and Bug die (hide spoiler)]。Lotssss of things remain a mystery (Chains (I wanna know more about him, maybe we're not meant to but I do。。。), SABETHA) & the epilogue sets up lotsa interesing stuff, I will try to read it this month! In general, I would 100% recommend any and all fantasy fans to give this book a try, it's absolutely worth it。 Locke, you bastard, you stole my heart as well。 。。。more

An excellent bit of truly unique fantasy worldbuilding with a cast of utterly lovable roguish scamps。 The villains plot ends up being much less complex than I thought, based on the books penchant for convoluted cons。 But that provided a nice contrast to the way our heroes operate。 I immediately want to read this one again。 It consistently surprised me and is one of the more vivid fantasy worlds I've encountered since Name of the Wind。 An excellent bit of truly unique fantasy worldbuilding with a cast of utterly lovable roguish scamps。 The villains plot ends up being much less complex than I thought, based on the books penchant for convoluted cons。 But that provided a nice contrast to the way our heroes operate。 I immediately want to read this one again。 It consistently surprised me and is one of the more vivid fantasy worlds I've encountered since Name of the Wind。 。。。more

I started this book years ago and never finished it because I had to turn it back into the library。 It wasn’t the books fault at all。 I knew I would get back to it when I had the chance。 And I knew I would love it when I did。 Without spoiling, the end of this book had me hooting and hollering over a callback。

Kind of atmosphere, but I never really cared。 To read a book about a character and his schemes without ever experiencing his scheming made for a very dull experience and made it more difficult to relate to the main character。Something else that is obvious from the Beginning。 All of the characters sound the same。 Whether they're food or bad, they are have the same personality。i think this also contributed to the story being dull。 And lastly the book employees a writing technique that involves interjecting the chapters with interludes that take place before the events of the book。 So you're jumping back between the present and the past。 I've experienced books written in this format before without any problem but in this book I think he would have been better off putting all the interludes at the beginning of the book because it only served to slow down the plot of the story and caused me to lose interest。 I think it goes without saying that I won't be continuing this series。 。。。more

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch is some of the best written and most fun fantasy I've read。 Lynch knows how to write a hook, and it's no surprise to me that a publisher bought his unfinished manuscript on the strength of the first chapter alone。 After that, the pacing is simply excellent。 Every page and chapter draws you further into the conniving plans of the characters, and Lynch manages to milk a few relatively simple plot arcs for many surprising twists and turns such that you finish The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch is some of the best written and most fun fantasy I've read。 Lynch knows how to write a hook, and it's no surprise to me that a publisher bought his unfinished manuscript on the strength of the first chapter alone。 After that, the pacing is simply excellent。 Every page and chapter draws you further into the conniving plans of the characters, and Lynch manages to milk a few relatively simple plot arcs for many surprising twists and turns such that you finish the book both exactly where you expected and somewhere different entirely。 What really makes this journey work, though, is the characters。 Locke, Jean, Calo, Galdo, and Bug are FUN。 Their interactions are an endearing blend of immature dysfunction and too-smart-for-their-own-good wit。 Secondary characters like Capa Barsavi, the Grey King, the Berangias Sisters, and Father Chains are also well-conceived and add to the world in their own fun ways。 (Shark fighting sisters? Hell yeah!) Other highlights of this book include the dialogue — which contains several truly laugh out loud lines — and the descriptions, which are so evocative of the setting。 As much a pleasure the second time through as the first。 Will read again。 。。。more

I nearly bounced off of this book, but I'm glad I stuck with it。 Initially the chapters swap between an in progress scam and Locke's childhood, with faint connections between the two。 As the action progresses, these slightly disorienting jumps turn into something closer to flashbacks in a hesit film with clear and strong connections to the ongoing action。 As that change occurs, the book really got its claws into me and I found myself going from picking it up out of obligation to the story, to no I nearly bounced off of this book, but I'm glad I stuck with it。 Initially the chapters swap between an in progress scam and Locke's childhood, with faint connections between the two。 As the action progresses, these slightly disorienting jumps turn into something closer to flashbacks in a hesit film with clear and strong connections to the ongoing action。 As that change occurs, the book really got its claws into me and I found myself going from picking it up out of obligation to the story, to not wanting to put it down。 。。。more

This was an all-right book - I'd probably give it 3。5 stars。 Pretty well-written, decent plot, pretty good characters, extensive worldbuilding。 It didn't grab me too hard, though。 For whatever reason, I didn't connect super well with Locke and Jean; not sure if that's me or the author or some combination of both。 Their characters felt a bit shallow to me, despite the extensive flashbacks showing their origins and development。 Plus it would have been nice to have a little more focus on the ins an This was an all-right book - I'd probably give it 3。5 stars。 Pretty well-written, decent plot, pretty good characters, extensive worldbuilding。 It didn't grab me too hard, though。 For whatever reason, I didn't connect super well with Locke and Jean; not sure if that's me or the author or some combination of both。 Their characters felt a bit shallow to me, despite the extensive flashbacks showing their origins and development。 Plus it would have been nice to have a little more focus on the ins and outs of their relationship, since it's so fundamental to them both - and so crucial to the plot。Also, Lynch has a really interesting thing he does with female characters - there are zero women MCs, but lots of women in side roles or as scenery, and he makes a point of showing that those women are smart and competent and badass。 Which I liked! But I would have liked it more if they hadn't been hardcore sidelined, compared to the male characters。 It would have been nice if there had been a woman in the Gentlemen Bastards (other than the one who's a thousand miles away for the entire book including flashbacks!)。 The last part of the book did a bit better, with Sofia and Vorchenza, but I would've liked them to have larger roles, and maybe be more fleshed out as people。Also, no gay people in this world, which was a shame; there was plenty of room for it。 。。。more

This book had a lot of things that made me enjoy it。 It has great world building, likeable characters, funny dialogue, exciting fast paced plot, unexpected twists, and a sense that the characters elaborate heists will all come crashing down。 For me the limited magic in the story was a nice change of pace。 I enjoyed the flashback interludes that built the world and the characters back stories, but some people find it can take away from the main plot。 I've seen this book described as the Ocean's 1 This book had a lot of things that made me enjoy it。 It has great world building, likeable characters, funny dialogue, exciting fast paced plot, unexpected twists, and a sense that the characters elaborate heists will all come crashing down。 For me the limited magic in the story was a nice change of pace。 I enjoyed the flashback interludes that built the world and the characters back stories, but some people find it can take away from the main plot。 I've seen this book described as the Ocean's 11 of modern fantasy, and I think that is fairly accurate。 。。。more

I can't believe I held off reading this for so long。 It's the most stunning, strongly voiced fantasy novel I've read。。。 maybe ever。I tore through this book at a rate of knots。 Beautiful characterisation drives everything in this story and I loved it from start to finish。If you like thieves, heists, magnificent bastards and grimy low magic worlds - this book is 100% for you。 I can't believe I held off reading this for so long。 It's the most stunning, strongly voiced fantasy novel I've read。。。 maybe ever。I tore through this book at a rate of knots。 Beautiful characterisation drives everything in this story and I loved it from start to finish。If you like thieves, heists, magnificent bastards and grimy low magic worlds - this book is 100% for you。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 On an objective level, the writing quality of this is quite solid。 The characters are quirky and all have definitive personalities and world views。 The prose is excellent, the metaphors enjoyable。 The world building is just enough to keep you interested while still leaving enough a mystery。 The plot twists were great。 So on an objective level, this would be like 4。5 / 5。But for me personally, I just 。。。 can't like Locke。 He is a thief, a con artist, and an unapologetic one。 He has some boundarie On an objective level, the writing quality of this is quite solid。 The characters are quirky and all have definitive personalities and world views。 The prose is excellent, the metaphors enjoyable。 The world building is just enough to keep you interested while still leaving enough a mystery。 The plot twists were great。 So on an objective level, this would be like 4。5 / 5。But for me personally, I just 。。。 can't like Locke。 He is a thief, a con artist, and an unapologetic one。 He has some boundaries he won't cross, but not many。 So to me he is more a likable villain, fighting an unlikable villain。 For instance, the scene where he mutilates the Bondsmage。 So it's a bit hard to root for the protagonist, from my perspective。 I am sympathetic given the horrible hand he was dealt with in life, and I appreciate some shades of grey。 But it's hard for me to enjoy these darker shades。 。。。more
